The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. It made Patroclus and Achilles less interesting than their characterization in The Iliad. Especially Patroclus.

The Kaleidoscope of Death — It’s a Chinese horror novel. I usually hate horror novels but I was interested in its premise: the protagonists explore multiple video-game-like dimensions to solve “puzzles” inspired by classic horror movies. Additionally, the protagonists have a dynamic I love in adventure novels with thriller / horror elements: the clever but inexperienced protagonist and his powerful protector whose presence gives both the protagonist and the reader a sense of security now matter how scary or dangerous the situation gets. Two of my favorite pieces of media with horror / supernatural themes feature this dynamic: Yuuko and Watanuki in XXXHolic by CLAMP and Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling in Daomubiji by Nanpai Sanshu. I ship this dynamic and in The Kaleidoscope of Death, the two protagonist are a canon couple!

It’s also a story about intimate relationships, class and gender dynamics, political change, and intellectual movements in post-war Italy

Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles or, The Book of Galehaut Retold, by Patricia Terry and Samuel N. Rosenberg: a very good retelling based on the 13th century French (Brittany) versions of the King Arthur legend focusing on the story of Lancelot and Galehaut. It’s a tragic story of love, requited, but not enough. Lancelot forsakes his friend Galehaut for his queen Guinevere, but at the end of his tale, as he lay dying in a monastery, he requests to be buried with Galehaut’s in death.

The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Steven Greenblatt: a non-fiction book about the story of Poggio Bracciolini and 15th century scholars whose interest in finding, restoring, and reprinting books from classical antiquity helped spur the beginnings of the renaissance. It’s a deeply romantic story about intellectual desire and the love of knowledge. A 15th century catholic papal secretary finds and rescues the only remaining copy of Roman philosopher Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things), a “heretical” book claiming that the world is secular and comprised of atoms, and his love for this piece of ancient knowledge changes the world.

Top five characters

Of all time would be very, very hard to answer uhh.... Hm. You know what I'm going to try anyways. I can't make any sort of ranking for them because they all occupy such huge amounts of space in my brain so let's go with the order in which I found them.

1: Valkyrie Cain

From the Skulduggery Pleasant series and perhaps the most relatable character I've ever come across. She's Irish she's bisexual she uses humour as a coping mechanism she has an ego sky high she goes through so much trauma her own reflection hates her she's just. So good.

2: Toph Beifong

From avatar the last airbender. Iconic TV show iconic character. I feel like I shouldn't even need to explain this one like she's just too cool. Joined the show late and made every moment count, she was a delight to watch. I think avatar being the first show I experienced online fandom with is part of the reason she makes the top 5, but hey, nostalgia is one hell of a drug and she was a foundational part of my childhood that helped shape all the future characters I'd come to love.

3: Willow Rosenberg

From Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My favourite little meow meow (She has no morals, unfathomable amounts of power, and the only reason she hasn't destroyed the world is because her friends are in it and they like fighting monsters together) Such a good deconstruction of the nerdy best friend archetype and also she's a lesbian. And kills misogynists. But not unless they really piss her off because her friends kind of have a whole thing about murdering other humans and she spends a lot of time trying to pretend her morals are the same as theirs.

4: Cassandra Wayne

Everyone pretend to be shocked. The whole reason I got into the batfam and dc outside of the titans. I saw that Dick had a sister who was a cooler version of Batman and never looked back. No regrets even though comics can be. Well. This whole blog is a decent summary of all my thoughts on her. Also hilariously enough she's the only person on this list who would not be OK with murder. Congrats on being the most normal one here in that regard Cass it's not something that happens to you like. Ever.

5: Sameen Shaw

From Person of Interest. Bisexual sociopath and one of the best TV characters ever created. Watch Person of Interest for Taraji P Henson in Season 1 and then Root and Shaw from season 2 onwards. Trust me it's worth it. She's everything.

trios of people from the main three shows i watch that i think would be friends

the main three shows i watch are glee, wynnona earp, and buffy the vampire slayer. these trios are made up of one person from each show, and i think the three characters would be friends. i’m bad at explaining

wynnona earp, faith lehane, and santana lopez

the vibes of all three of these women are incredibly similar. also, i don’t think there’d be much conflict because bc i think they’d all get each other and give each other space when needed

doc holliday, angel, and finn hudson

this is only like 20% because i can’t stand these men. these are three dramatic bitches who think the world revolves around them. i think they’d work well as friends because they’d all listen to each other’s over dramatic bs

waverly earp, willow rosenberg, and brittany s pierce

first of all, all three of them are technically geniuses. but they all have a similar kind of peppy vibe. they inject positivity into their shows, most of the time. i think they would work well as friends because they are all some of the most supportive people i’ve seen on tv. most of their time would be waverly and brittany trying to console willow, who is probably sad about some random thing

jeremy chetri, xander harris, and sam evans

this would be the goofiest, most chaotic trio of all time. they’d cover all regions of pop culture references. they would make each other laugh so hard.

nicole haught, tara maclay, and kurt hummel

all three of them have very different vibes, but this would be the single strongest friend group ever. this is a group of fighters who would support each other through everything

xavier dolls, buffy summers, and quinn fabray

these three are unnecessarily serious (in varying degrees of course, like seriousness-wise it goes dolls>quinn>buffy). not even to mention that two of them are very clearly repressed queer women who kind of look similar. i feel like they’d all approach problems entirely logically

these three would complain to each other al the time, but they’d also be super fun. they’re always upset people don’t take them seriously, but they’re not very serious people

Traits: Snob / Art Lover / Ambitious

Backstory: She’s the only child of two wealthy business tycoons whose idea of raising children is leaving her in the care of the nanny. It wasn’t always like that. Brittani remembers a time when her parents were home. They were happy. That all changed when her older sister was diagnosed with leukemia. Then it was doctors and hospitals and then her sister didn’t come home. She was five when her sister passed away leaving a hole in all their lives. 

Her parents sold their house in Widenberg moving them to San Myshuno. Soon Brittani was left with only the nanny as her parents devoted their lives to their work leaving Brittani to figure things out for herself. Whenever she felt lonely she got a new toy. If she was sad she got a new outfit. Money cured everything except bring her sister back. 

Twenty years later she’s a medical student. Her biggest ambition is to become an oncologist to put an end to cancer once and for all. Her friends are concerned about her studying so much and sent an application in to Marc’s BC to nudge her into opening her mind up to love.

She goes alone because most of her ‘friends’ only want to hang out with her when she’s shopping or clubbing. 

Benny would go but he and Pauly were banned from the premises because they got little carried away in the bathroom. 

She always has baked goods around. She loves to bake and when she’s not studying she’s looking up new ways to decorate her baked creations. 

Benny is always encouraging her to join amateur baking contests. She doesn’t think she’s good enough.

The new Rosenberg ruling has provided the legal precedent needed to make dismissal through bankruptcy easier, but this won’t solve the larger issue of soaring student debt. In fact, it perpetuates the problem.

Discharging the debt will undoubtedly help individual borrowers, but dismissing individual debt doesn’t mean it goes away. There is no magic to make it disappear; it simply shifts the burden. Someone has to pay, and this will inevitably fall on taxpayers.

Agreeing to let borrowers off the hook also perpetuates the broken system we have now. If you know your loans can be easily wiped out, what’s going to stop you from borrowing even more money and then filing for bankruptcy once the loans go into repayment?

Not to mention, student loans actually raise the cost of tuition. The more students borrow, the higher tuition becomes, which results in more students taking out even more student loans to pay for the increase in cost.

Making it easier for individuals to discharge their debts does nothing to fix the underlying problem: surging costs.
