Thanks for US schooling explanation.
In UK, we do have P.E, but it’s not as detailed or developed like you describe in the US.
P.E is so rudimentary that no one takes it seriously, and it focuses on very basic aerobics style exercise…all depends on programme P.E teacher devises. It differs from school to school.
In private school, you might have P.E as an option, but more often than not, the school insists that each pupil takes up a sport or two. The people who are good enough to join house/ school sports teams are exceptional, but everyone in the student body will have a sports in their educational arsenal.
Keeping this conversation with Kate, look at the sports page of Marlborough school.
https://www.marlboroughcollege.org/co-curricular/sport/
Quote from website:
Sport is part of daily life at Marlborough. We strive for every pupil to participate actively and to have a truly positive experience, developing a lifelong interest in and lasting enjoyment of sporting activity that will foster good habits long into adulthood.
Our talented and dedicated coaching teams strive to create the best possible environment for pupils to learn with a judicious mixture of challenge and open communication. There are many opportunities for pupils to represent the College in teams across a wide range of over 20 competitive sports, as well as participating in frequent high-energy house competitions, utilising our outstanding College facilities.
List of sports on offer:
https://www.marlboroughcollege.org/co-curricular/sport/all-sports/
Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, CrossCountry,  Equestrian, Fencing, Fives, Football, Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Polo, Rackets, Rugby, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Water Polo.
It’s impossible to be a coach potato in a school where you are required to take up at least one from the above list of sports.
Other schools eg Bryanston and Milfields whose raison d'etre is sports rather than academics will have a longer list of sports for their student body to choose from.
***********
This is very interesting, anon -- thanks for following up and sharing! But now I wonder if it’s a chicken or the egg kind of a situation. Is Kate sporty because of Marlborough’s focus on athletic enrichment? Or was Marlborough a much better fit for Kate because she was sporty to begin with?
And, ah, aerobics...any time we had a sub in middle school PE (grades 6-8/ages 11-13), they’d throw us in the gym with a Billy Banks Tae Bo video projected on the wall.

Brennan’s Wikipedia Redo on Elon Musk page
Edits are in bold. Original Wiki page can be found here.
Early Life, Human Flight and SEC Lawsuit
Early life and family
Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa.[15][16] His mother is Maye Musk (née Haldeman), a model and dietitian born in Saskatchewan, Canada,[17][18][19] but raised in South Africa. His father is Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, sailor, consultant and property developer.[20] He has a younger brother who was an early business partner of his, Kimbal (born 1972), and a younger sister, Tosca (born 1974), the CEO of the video streaming site Passionflix.[19][21][25] His maternal grandfather, Dr. Joshua Haldeman, was an American-born Canadian.[26] His paternal grandmother had both British and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry.[27][28]
After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk lived mostly with his father in the suburbs of Pretoria,[27] a choice he made two years after his parents separated but which he subsequently regretted.[29] Musk has become estranged from his father, whom he has described as "a terrible human being... Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done."[29] He also has a half-sister[30] and a half-brother on his father's side.[31] After his parents divorced in 1980, nine year old Musk and his younger brother primarily lived with his father in the suburbs of Pretoria,[27]. This was a choice he made two years after his parents separated but it was one that he subsequently regretted.[29] Musk has become estranged from his father, describing him as emotionally abusive and tough to his children. [Kosoff 2020] He also has a half-sister[30] and a half-brother on his father's side.[31]
During his childhood, Musk was an avid reader.[32] At the age of 10, he developed an interest in computing while using the Commodore VIC-20.[33] He learned computer programming using a manual and, by the age of 12, sold the code of a BASIC-based video game he created called Blastar to PC and Office Technology magazine for approximately $500.[34][35] His childhood reading included Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, from which he drew the lesson that "you should try to take the set of actions that are likely to prolong civilization, minimize the probability of a dark age and reduce the length of a dark age if there is one".[29]
Musk was severely bullied throughout his childhood and was once hospitalized after a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs.[29][36][37] He attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School and Bryanston High School[37] before graduating from Pretoria Boys High School.[38]
Although Musk's father insisted that Elon go to college in Pretoria, Musk became determined to move to the United States, saying "I remember thinking and seeing that America is where great things are possible, more than any other country in the world."[39] Musk knew it would be easier to get to the United States from Canada and moved there against his father's wishes in June 1989, just before his 18th birthday,[40][41] after obtaining a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother.[42][43]
Human flight
On May 30, 2020, SpaceX launched its first manned flight called Demo-2 becoming the first private company to both place a person into orbit and to eventually dock a crewed space-craft with the ISS.[108] Further, the launch was the first time since the end of the Shuttle Program that an American astronaut has been launched from American soil on an American rocket.[109]
During discourse with his peers when the technology of SpaceX was criticized or had the potential to cause fatalities, Elon Musk has described himself as the company's responsible chief engineer/designer, while giving the entire team at SpaceX credit for its success.[110][111]
On November 16, 2020, Space X successfully launched with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) four astronauts into their space mission on SpaceX Crew Dragon. They docked with the International Space Station (ISS) approximately 27 hours later. Unlike the test flight in May, 2020, this flight had a full set of scientific experiments planned for the trip, as well as plans for a stay on the ISS for six months. The launch was nearly stopped, as Elon Musk announced that he had symptoms of COVID-19 the day before the launch, but careful contact tracing verified that the astronauts had not been exposed.  This joint project, where the space vehicles are owned by Space X but with NASA buying their use for missions, means that Space X will be able to fly tourists, private scientists and others, with a projected ticket cost of $50 million for the trip. [Wattles 2020]
SEC lawsuit
In September 2018, Musk was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a tweet claiming that funding had been secured for potentially taking Tesla private[149] (at a price of $420 a share, an alleged reference to marijuana[150]). The lawsuit claimed that verbal discussions Musk held with foreign investors in July 2018 did not confirm key deal terms[151] and thus characterized the tweet as false, misleading, and damaging to investors, and sought to bar Musk from serving as CEO of publicly traded companies.[149][152] Musk called the allegations unjustified and that he had never compromised his integrity.[153] Two days later, Musk settled with the SEC, without admitting or denying the SEC's allegations. As a result, Musk and Tesla were fined $20 million each, and Musk was forced to step down for three years as Tesla chairman, but he was able to remain as Tesla's CEO.[154]
Musk has stated in several interviews since that he does not regret sending the tweet that triggered the SEC investigation. According to Reuters, Musk said the tweet was "Worth It".[155] According to ABC News, "As recently as Oct. 4, 2018, Musk issued a sarcastic tweet, describing the agency [SEC] as the 'Shortseller Enrichment Commission,' despite having agreed to settlement terms a week earlier that his company, Tesla, would monitor his tweets and other communications."[156] In a December 2018 interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, Musk stated, "I want to be clear. I do not respect the SEC."[157] On February 19, 2019, according to Forbes, Musk stated in a tweet that Tesla would build half a million cars in 2019.[158] The SEC reacted to Musk's tweet by filing in court, initially asking the court to hold him in contempt for violating the terms of a settlement agreement with such a tweet, which was disputed by Musk. This was eventually settled by a joint agreement between Musk and the SEC clarifying the previous agreement details.[159] The agreement included a list of topics that Musk would need preclearance before tweeting about.[160] On May 19, 2020, a judge prevented a lawsuit from proceeding that claimed Musk's tweet on May 1 regarding the price of Tesla stock ("too high imo") was in violation of the agreement.[161][162].  Legal experts suggest that some of the legal actions by the SEC against Musk for stating his view, is a violation of First Amendment rights of free speech, and that he should have equal protection of free speech about his viewpoints on how successful his Tesla company will be. These experts argue that this is no different that the free speech protection provided to political figures. [Markham 2019]
Essay -
This essay addresses a review of the Wikipedia page of Elon Musk, an entrepreneur, industrial designer, engineer and also billionaire.  It is a detailed web page covering his extensive business ventures, and when converted to a single-spaced Word document, it was approximately sixteen pages long.  Three sections were addressed in this review, his Early Life, Human Flight, and SEC lawsuit.
There seem to be a number of biases in the Wikipedia page by omission of content. This might be considered implicit, perhaps someone forgot to add the information, perhaps they did not think it was important or necessary.  It also might be considered explicit, such as purposely excluding content that might give someone a different view of the subject, in this case of Elon Musk.   Some of the omissions could be in progress, such as the discussion of the November 16, 2020 successful space launch, which was covered in depth by the United States Press, both on media and print.  On the other hand, Wikipedia pages can be updated in a day, which often seems to happen when someone dies.
In the first part, Early Life and Family, there seems to be an explicit bias against Elon Musk’s father, and includes a quote from Musk, according to Rolling Stone Magazine, saying of his father, that he was "a terrible human being... Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done."  There is no clarification of what these evil things might have been, but it sounds pretty horrendous. There is no counter argument to provide any context for his father.  I modified it, changing the line above to one used in an article by Kosoff that refers to his father as being emotionally abusive and tough on his children.  This still conveys a difficult home life, but without evidence it doesn’t seem right to describe it as evil.  There did not seem to be any available resources on the father’s perspective of his son.   Also added the detail that Musk was only nine years old when he moved to live with his father.  I removed the line that described some of his ancestors as it seemed to try to provide implicit bias for him, in particular to explain why he might have the right to come to Canada first and then the United States as a citizen, since his ancestors were from there.  This convey that he is entitled because of his ancestors, but it seemed out of context to list one maternal and one paternal grandparent.
The section on Human Flight ended with the May 2020 test launch and did not include the highly publicized and successful mission launched with four astronauts on November 16, 2020.  This seems a dramatic omission, as it was all over the news.  This seems to me to be an explicit omission, perhaps because of the COVID-19 scare, which also meant he could not attend the launch, or if it was because some are jealous of the success of his ventures.
The SEC Lawsuit section presents an implicit suggestion that Musk is rejecting the right of the SEC to regulate company officers, in particular to protect investors. The SEC did have a number of legally defensible points, which led to a large fine and limiting Musk’s participation in the Tesla company.  However, there are some legal experts that also defend the right of Musk to have free speech about his opinion of how the company will do in the future, which is different that suggesting he has arranged for company financing to go private.
The revisions that I made primarily fill in gaps in the Wikipedia page, that indicated potential bias.  While much of the document appears to be very factual, the omissions, although only a few, can lead to bias.
The sources reviewed and then used for this review are included in the Works Cited section below. These included news articles, business stories and biography sites. There are also books available, that would have provided some additional depth and analysis, but they were not used for this particular review.

Varying your sentence length
‘Sentence length is  another matter. Novice writers vary their sentence structure too much, but their sentence lengths too little. A good trick, when drafting a piece, is to press enter after every sentence, as if you were writing a poem and each full stop marked a line break. This renders the varied (or unvaried) lengths of your sentences instantly visible...
...Nicholas Tomalin, in his advice to neophyte journalists, pointed out that you got high marks for style if you just alternated long sentences with short ones. One of his teachers at Bryanston School, John Royds, had given him this tip when he became editor of the school magazine. Tomalin dispensed the advice casually, as if it were a weary hack’s shortcut - and it is tru that alternating short and long sentences sounds so easy that it should come across as a mere trick. But no. It works every time.’

The foundation's website was only 33 words in plain text, which Vox described as "entertaining in its simplicity and yet strikingly opaque". Some critics have expressed their disappointment with the foundation's relatively modest donation. He donated $25 million to non-profits between 2002 and 2018, with almost half of that going to Musk's OpenAI. Forbes awarded Musk a philanthropic score of 1 in 2020 because he had given away less than 1% of his net worth.

I can’t say that I really enjoyed Juliet Gardiner’s book Wartime: Britain 1939-1945, which I read a couple of years ago. Particularly coming right after Norman Longmate’s How We Lived Then, it left a sour taste in my mouth. (In a nutshell: Longmate, a veteran of the war, wrote a book about courage and sacrifice; Gardiner, born a few weeks after V-E Day, wrote one about fear and suffering.)
However, Gardiner does introduce the reader to several eyewitnesses to the war about whom I immediately wanted to know more, particularly an American expatriate who when the war broke out was living with her family in an apartment in St. John’s Wood, London. Gardiner, who refers to this woman as Margaret Cotton, quotes several times from her wartime journal. She really could write. A litany-like summary of the damage caused by a V-2 attack is particularly powerful:
The act of destruction and death took a few seconds. The rescue of victims took a few days. The billeting of the homeless will take a few weeks. The healing of the injured will take an indefinite time. The clearing of the bombed and burned site will take months. The rebuilding will take years. The dead are dead.
In her back-matter Gardiner credits these excerpts to an Imperial War Museums file with the assigned title Private Papers of Mrs E H Cotton. (”Mrs,” let’s remember, has traditionally meant “the wife of,” so I simply assumed that those were her husband’s initials.) Since my chances of being able to examine those papers - Mrs. Cotton’s wartime journal, and an apparently unpublished memoir derived from it - any time soon are just about nil, I decided to see whether I could find any more excerpts online. Searching for <”margaret cotton”> didn’t turn anything up, but <“mrs e h cotton”> led me to several books published since 2000. Some of what I found there has turned out to be false: it turns out that she was neither married to a British businessman nor “a young mother at the time of the war,” as certain self-described historians would have it. And one book asserted that her name was Ernestine - not Margaret. Hmm.
Somewhere, I picked up the information that Mrs. Cotton wrote the memoir for the benefit of her grand-daughter, whose name was Penelope. So I searched for <penelope cotton> (not as a phrase) and, to my great surprise, hit the jackpot.
Tumblr media
Cotton, Ernestine Hunt.1 Journal for Penelope. New York: Vantage Press, 2005.
Ernestine Hunt Cotton - nicknamed Peg, which may explain Gardiner’s confusion - and her husband, Dick, both Mayflower descendants,2 relocated from the suburbs of Boston to London during the winter of 1934-35, when he became the managing director of British Rola, an offshoot of an American electronics manufacturer. When the war began they had two daughters in their twenties, Alix and Martha, and an adolescent son, Gerry. Alix was engaged to a Fleet Air Arm pilot; as commonly happened during the war, the wedding took place earlier than originally planned, and it gives very little away to say that Alix soon found herself a widow with a small child. Martha was training as a speech pathologist, possibly after a year in medical school. (Mrs. Cotton doesn’t make this clear, and may have conflated the two.) Regardless, Martha had to give up her studies in 1940 when her training school closed for the duration. She joined the British Red Cross.
Mrs. Cotton writes that the family’s move came about as a result of the Depression, but I am skeptical. The Cottons were clearly very well-off: Gerry attended La Châtaigneraie, near Geneva, before the war; when this became impractical he was sent instead to Bryanston, in Dorset. The growing unavailability of household help during the war - the Cottons were accustomed to employing a cook, a housekeeper, and a maid - was a recurring problem. For the  last year or so of the war they had homes in both city and country. All of this, along with Martha’s post-secondary studies, whatever they were, had to be paid for somehow.
No, my hunch is that Dick Cotton was doing some sort of classified government service. His initial mandate at British Rola seems to have been to shift its output from loudspeakers and make it “a main artery for pumping life blood into the R.A.F. - literally, for the factory produces a certain type of mechanical pump, built into the planes,” Mrs. Cotton wrote in 1940. Throughout the war he dealt with people at very high levels of the war effort, in both the U.K. and the U.S. He made several return trips during the war, sometimes traveling under very difficult conditions and spending a good deal of time in Washington, D.C., and was one of the organizers of The American Committee for the Defense of British Homes, which donated weapons to the Home Guard. He also appears to have been aware of the existence of the V-weapons, and of precisely how dangerous they would be, several months before they came into use. At one point his wife writes of him talking “in the usual cryptic way of men nowadays - men who are doing a job a bit on the hush-hush.”
In any case, the British Rola factory was located in Acton until October 1940, when severe bombing in that area led the Ministry of Defence to approve (in the form of an order, mind you) its immediate evacuation to a pre-selected site in Bideford, Devon. The entire Cotton family followed suit, and the memoir becomes in part a story of adjustment to country life. With some difficulty, they found a place to live in Instow, three miles from Bideford: Springfield, a nine-bedroom Georgian mansion in a questionable state of repair. While they lived there, the house became a center of hospitality for Allied service personnel generally and, beginning in 1942, for Americans in particular. (At one point the household realize with alarm that they’re sheltering some AWOL sergeants.)
Mostly, though, this book is about the day-to-dayness of the war as it affected one family whose circumstances were a tad unusual. It is clearly the memoir part of the IWM’s papers, and the only clue as to when Mrs. Cotton wrote it is her observation that
This type of fog - a “pea-souper” - is now practically non-existent in London. New buildings have central heating, and there is a law prohibiting the use of any coal save that which has been rendered almost smokeless.
Some passages seem to be lifted directly from the wartime journal, so that we get dizzying transitions between events in progress and those that have occurred some time in the past. And Mrs. Cotton herself can be a bit dizzy at times. After leaving Bryanston, Gerry made multiple attempts to join first the American and then the British armed forces, but was foiled by his susceptibility to what his mother persists in referring to as “anti-philatic shock.” I can only assume that she means anaphylactic shock. (Gerry ended up on the assembly line at British Rola; Alix was a V.A.D. at Bideford Hospital.)
There is also the matter of the book’s production. Vantage Press, which went out of business in 2012, was one of the original vanity publishing operations. Authors’ typescripts - this one was created with word-processing software that was already out-of-date in 2005, and was apparently produced on a dot-matrix printer - were treated as camera-ready copy and were not subjected to any editing whatsoever. The result in this case is a book riddled with typographical errors. The substitution of it’s for the possessive its is so consistent that it becomes annoying all by itself.
Journal for Penelope is nevertheless worth reading. A Republican (of an era long before ours) married to a Democrat, deeply generous in her impulses, a mistress of the vivid simile (”My stomach curled up like a caterpillar”), Ernestine Cotton is very good company. I’d still like to read the original journal - something tells me there’s a good miniseries lurking there! - but this book is an acceptable, and welcome, substitute.
1For anyone unfamiliar with this usage, which as far as I know is purely North American and which seems to be fading away, Mrs. Cotton took her husband’s surname while using her maiden name as a middle (second) name to be included or not as the occasion required. My mother did the same thing; likewise Mercy Otis Warren, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Florence Prag Kahn, Oveta Culp Hobby, Marian Wright Edelman, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Katharine Jefferts Schori, and many others.
2The Mayflower was the first ship to bring non-Native settlers to the region now known as New England, arriving from Plymouth in November 1620. Stereotypically at least, descendants of its passengers are wealthy, entitled, clannish, repressed, highly conscious of their status, and found primarily on the Atlantic seaboard.

Fisherman’s Dock, Poole
Plans submitted for landmark regeneration project in Poole
London: 22nd October 2020 – MHA has today announced that a planning application has been submitted for the development of Fisherman’s Dock, located adjacent to the Marina in the heart of Poole. A key vantage point along Poole’s historic Quay, the application looks to further enhance the iconic setting through a comprehensive regeneration project, which will see the construction of 228 apartments, a 118 bed boutique hotel, complete with rooftop restaurant and bar and commercial space.
With unprecedented views overlooking the harbour towards Brownsea Island, the new private and affordable apartments will be spread across four separate and distinctive residential buildings designed to reflect Poole’s quayside heritage.
The proposed hotel and 8,600 sq.ft of commercial space available for a range of uses, including leisure and retail, will cater to Poole’s growing tourism business, attracting visitors and creating much-needed employment opportunities in the process, whilst providing an enhanced and active frontage to the Quay.
As a result of Covid-19, MHA was required to conduct a virtual public consultation for this project. With the help of its dedicated project team, a consultation website and animated sketch video were created, with a specific platform enabling local residents and businesses to comment and interact with the development proposals.
Hossein Abedinzadeh, Founder of MHA commented: ‘This project is inspired by the rich history of the site and its local surroundings; not only will Fisherman’s Dock regenerate this part of Poole, it will also give back to the local community with the provision of valuable homes and employment opportunities. This fantastic project will embrace the heritage of the site and create a prime cultural, commercial and residential destination in the heart of Poole.”
About MHA:   MHA is a diverse property company headquartered in central London with regional offices in both Birmingham and Brighton. For MHA it is about integrity, discipline and building trusted relationships that should stand the test of time. The company’s warm and sensitive approach and empathy with the vision of planners, enables MHA to unlock the potential of bricks and mortar, old and new, with the experience, passion and dedication of its team, and tailored strategies to suit the unique characteristics of each project. Luxury living in South Africa
Tumblr media
Three South African suburbs have been highlighted as the epitome of luxury living in South Africa. Here's why these three regions are attracting the well-heeled elites and big spenders.
The big spenders
The 2019 Africa Wealth Report, released by AfrAsia Bank and New World Wealth, outlined some intriguing statistics about a certain sector of South African society: the well-heeled, big spenders, and celebrity lifestyle livers. Luxury living in South Africa is, compared to other regions in the world, relatively inexpensive, as international property prices far outstrip prices on our slice of the planet. Moreover, as the 2019 Africa Wealth Report revealed, South Africa has over twice as many millionaires as any other African country. It makes sense, therefore, that 3 out of the 5 top spots for luxury living within Africa are found within South African borders. Let’s take a look at how these luxury living suburbs match up:
Superb Sandton
If you consider the concentration of wealth across South Africa, you’ll find Sandton coming up trumps when it comes to comparison. Not only is Sandton home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and a plethora of Africa’s largest businesses, it’s also home to a significant number of South Africa’s well-heeled. The 2019 median selling price for a home in Sandton and Bryanston North comes in at R2 999 000. Serving that statistic another way: If you’re keen to join the well-heeled lifestyle of luxury living in Sandton, you’ll need to expect to spend just under R3 million to buy a home within this stunning suburb. Again, living in Sandton is a rather exclusive experience, offering both convenience and somewhat of a celebrity lifestyle. There’s little to no commute for CEOs to endure, and being right in the heart of where everything happens makes it easy to enjoy the celebrity lifestyle.
Three things to do in Superb Sandton
Covering just under 150 kilometres squared, luxury living in Sandton is made easier by its close location to:
·         Iconic shopping destinations: Sandton City is the place to be for every big spender. Boutiques that’ll blow any budget, retail stores with the right, big prices, and so much more await.
·         Five-star hotels: Staying at home is so last season, when staying at the Michelangelo is so much more fun!
·         Several private schools: Mom’s school run is a fashionista ramp walk in Sandton, with dozens of private schools to pick from.
Explore luxury living in Sandton here.
Catching up in Cape Town
According to the 2019 Africa Wealth Report, the total amount of wealth contained within the city tallies up US$133 billion. That’s a sizeable chunk of change, and more than double what’s listed for our third suburb that serves as a hotspot for luxury living in South Africa. Between its sweet ocean views, majestic mountain ranges, and excellent lifestyle, Cape Town is a preferred choice for both locals and visitors, with a significant portion of property owners from across the globe scooping up incredible properties as their second home. Signing up for the celebrity lifestyle comes at a price tag however, as the median selling price for a home in the Cape Town City Bowl swings in at R2 828 000.
Cape Town luxury living
Luxury living comes naturally to the City of Cape Town, thanks to its natural surroundings. Not satisfied to rest on its laurels, however, the City of Cape Town has become a cosmopolitan city for business and pleasure, offering almost every imaginable facility and service that a modern city must, in order to compete with international sights and scenery. Offering an elevated level of safety and convenience within the City Bowl, the City of Cape Town stands apart when compared with South Africa’s other regional CBDs. Moreover, you’re never too far away from having fun in the City of Cape Town, as the ocean invites you in for a swim, or the Winelands awaits for a wander.
Explore living in Cape Town.
Delightful Durban
Surprise! What so many people cast off as a holiday destination, or sleepy hollow when compared to South Africa’s major cities, is now becoming a hotspot for the well-heeled. In particular, the suburb of Umhlanga is attracting the big wallet holders, with a median selling price for a home in Umhlanga settling in at R3 950 000. With the 2019 African Wealth Report recording the total value of wealth held in the City of Durban weighing in at US$54 Billion, it’s no surprise to residents and businesspeople that it’s one of the fastest growing regions in South Africa.
Developing Durban
As many businesses moved away from the CBD, and further north, Umhlanga and Ballito have undergone exceptional development over the past decade. With space to move and develop, several high-profile businesses, both national and multinational, have been setting up headquarters along the East Coast. Perhaps that’s why Durban North was our most searched for suburb in 2019.
Learn how to live it up in Umhlanga.

Dubai ruler’s wife flees ‘for her life’ to London
Tumblr media
Sheikh Mohammed recently posted a furious poem on Instagram accusing an unknown woman of “treachery and betrayal”, BBC reported. The princess married the billionaire in 2004 and became his sixth and “junior wife”. Sheikh Mohammed is believed to have 23 children by different wives. Princess Haya fled to Germany to seek asylum with her two children and is said to be living in a $107 million townhouse in Kensington Palace Gardens in central London. She is also said to be preparing for a legal battle in the High Court. Sources close to her said that the princess recently got to know about some disturbing facts behind the mysterious return of the ruler’s daughter Sheikha Latifa to Dubai. Latifa had fled the UAE by sea with the help of a Frenchman but was stopped by armed men off the coast of India and returned to Dubai. Princess Haya, together with the former Irish president Mary Robinson defended Dubai’s reputation over the incident. The authorities in Dubai had said that Latifa had been “vulnerable to exploitation” and was “now safe in Dubai”. However, human rights activists said she was abducted. Since then, Princess Haya allegedly came under increasing hostility and discovered new facts about the case. She was also pressured by members of her husband’s extended family, until she came to a point of not feeling safe there. A source close to her said that she feared she may be abducted too and “rendered” back to Dubai. The UAE embassy in London has declined to comment. Princess Haya was educated at Bryanston School in Dorset, then Oxford University, and it is likely that she wants to stay in the UK. If her husband demands her return, then this could be a possible diplomatic headache for Britain, which has close ties to the UAE. The case is also awkward for Jordan as the princess is the half-sister of Jordan’s King Abdullah. Jordan gets remittances from nearly a quarter of a million people from Dubai, and cannot afford a rift with Dubai. Read the full article

Previous Bryanston High sporting activities train can deal with even more costs â $” anti-abuse team
A former Bryanston High School sports coach appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on allegations of sexually assaulting a pupil.
The 33-year-old man, who can’t be named because he has not pleaded, made a brief appearance in court before his matter was postponed.
He is expected back in court on April 15.
Child protection specialist at Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) Luke Lamprecht told the media outside the court that the anti-abuse organisation hoped the accused would be able to plead when the matter resumes next month.
Lamprecht said it was likely that more sexual offences charges would be added to the charge sheet.
“He has not been charged yet in court. For now he is facing a single charge of sexual assault since one victim came forward in January this year and laid charges against the coach. Two more victims have come forward with other allegations.
“We hope that when he appears again, he will be officially charged. Our biggest worry is that the man was not registered with the South African Council of Educators (SACE) when he was employed by the school,” said Lamprecht.
READ: Bryanston High School SGB denies allegations that it withheld information about sexual abuse of pupils
“We are worried that since he was not registered with SACE, he will be able to work with children in future even if he was dismissed by Bryanston High School. If he was initially registered with SACE when he was appointed, he would have been on the SACE child protection register and prevented from ever working with children,” said Lamprecht.
On March 1, the teacher was fired by the school governing body (SGB) following a disciplinary process. He was accused of sexually harassing three pupils and financial mismanagement.
Only one of the three victims later laid charges against the man at Sandton police station. Two others are also expected to lay criminal charges against him, according to WMACA.
The alleged incidents of sexual assault were said to have taken place during netball matches and on school outings between 2017 and 2018. A parent of one of the complainants confirmed this to News24.
The organisation earlier accused the SGB of allegedly persuading parents of the victims to pursue internal disciplinary steps instead of going the criminal route, withholding sensitive information about the allegations.
WMACA said it believed that the girls were sexually groomed by their coach.
SGB chairperson Aidan Hillebrand labelled the allegations by WMACA – that the school body’s members withheld information – as incorrect, false and unfounded.

City of Johannesburg Press Statement by Cllr Nico de Jager MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services
Water outage: Joburg Water undertaking largest repair job in entity’s histor
22 November 2017
Release: Immediate
I would like to advise residents of the Sandton, Bryanston, Woodmead, Morningside, Alexander, Linbro Park and the surrounding arrears that there were major leaks identified on the main water pipeline that runs through Linbro Park landfill site.
This is the largest repair job ever done by Joburg Water on a main line, and due to the burst being 35 meters deep on a very unstable landfill, we could not risk burying our employees alive during the maintenance process.
I am on site, and will be available for updates during today.
The burst pipe affected water supply, and supply had to be throttled to avoid reservoirs running dry as the recharging will take longer. We hope to flush the system around 12:00 and simultaneously open the reservoirs as well. Reservoirs shut down with 1 meter of water left, so that they will have time to refill.
High-lying areas such as Bryanston will take longer to receive water due to the height in relation to pumping capacity.
Estimated time of repair is 13:00, provided there are no further complications.
Water tanks are available at the following points:
· Morningside Clinic,
· Tara Hospital
· Alexander : [6th ave, 13th ave Alex & Vasc, 14th ave Alex & Vasco, 14th ave Alex & Rooth , 12th ave Alex, 15th ave Alex & Selborne, 15th ave Alex & Rooth, 16th ave Alex & Vasco, 16th ave & Selborne, 17th ave & Selborne, 18th ave & Vasco]
· Maritz Brothers School,
· Sandton City
· Benmore Gardens Mall
· Sandown Old Age Home,
· Sandown High School,
· Troop centre at corner Rivonia and Oxford
· Bryanston shopping centre,
· Petervale shopping centre,
· Bryanston primary school
· SPCA in Lonenhill
An additional 16 tankers will also be rolled out today.
Johannesburg Water is committed to provide water and sanitation that is of high quality to all residents of the City of Johannesburg and we apologize to residents for the inconvenience caused.

L-R : Gavin Kennedy (host), John Skelton (Principal of Bryanston High School) and Gershom Aitchison (Headmaster of Education Incorporated Boutique School) Not in the pic Andrew Jones (Wits and Kip McGrath Edenvale) Welcome to EduThink, the podcast that explores Education in South Africa. This episode deals with subject choices - The when, where, how and why - as well as ways this process can be de-stressed and improved.
In the studio with me to discuss this were John Skelton (Principal of Bryanston High School) and Gershom Aitchison (Headmaster of Education Incorporated Boutique School) as well as Andrew Jones who joined me earlier to elaborate on the challenges experienced at university level when learners take the wrong subjects.
In this episode you’ll hear about the entire process from Grade 8 to university, what often goes awry and what options are available. We also discuss strategies to help your child when the time comes to make these subject choices in Grade 9 and when changes can be made. My guests warn of some of the pitfalls and have lots of solid usable advice that may just help your family.
MUSIC : If you missed the beginning of the New Romantic era John referred to, here’s Sal Solo (from Classix Nouveaux) and their biggest hit “Is it a dream”. Or, if Josh Groban is more to your liking, here’s one of Gershom’s favourites for you - enjoy :-)
BOOKS RECOMMENDATIONS : If Gershom could give one book to every learner to read, it would be this one.
We appreciate discussion and your input so please visit our blog and add your feedback to further the conversation.
Thank you to Willem Nel from Acoustic Alien Audio for sound styling and original music, to Ofentse Xaba from Solid Gold Studios and Melanie Walker for our show intro voice.
You can mail me at [email protected] with suggestions for future episodes.
Until next time - keep learning! Yours Gavin Kennedy

Cardboard Dramaturgy: Adrian Jackson @ Edfringe 2017
CARDBOARD CITIZENS’ CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED HIT CATHY RETURNS FOR EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE RUN
CARDBOARD CITIZENS DEBUTS AT THE PLEASANCE ON THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE WITH ITS HIT PRODUCTION CATHY, INSPIRED BY CATHY COME HOME
WRITTEN BY ALI TAYLOR AND DIRECTED BY ADRIAN JACKSON CATHY WAS RESEARCHED IN COLLABORATION WITH HOMELESSNESS CHARITY, SHELTER
INTERACTIVE LEGISTLATIVE THEATRE STYLE WILL ALLOW AUDIENCES TO VOICE THEIR OPINIONS ON THE STATE OF HOUSING IN THE UK
youtube
Following its hugely successful UK tour, acclaimed theatre company Cardboard Citizens comes to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the first time with its critically acclaimed production Cathy, featuring the original cast.
Cardboard Citizens presents
Cathy
Venue: King Dome, Pleasance, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017
Dates: Wed 2 August – Sat 26 August, (not 9th, 14th, 21st), 3.30pm
Cathy premiered last autumn
following Cardboard Citizens one-off theatrical re-staging of Ken Loach’s seminal work Cathy Come Home at the Barbican.
Inspired by the iconic film, award-winning playwright Ali Taylor’s (Cotton Wool, OVERSPILL) new play continues Cardboard Citizens exploration of the state of housing and homelessness.
The powerful and emotive show, which transfers to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Cardboard Citizens’ 25th anniversary year, is directed by Cardboard Citizens Artistic Director Adrian Jackson and explores how life might be for a Cathy today.
Based on true stories, this timely reflection looks at the social and personal impact of spiralling housing costs and the challenges of forced relocation out of city centres experienced by many people on council waiting lists.
While the UK tour featured a Forum Theatre section, following the performance of the play, Edinburgh audiences will experience a similar style of interactive theatre called Legislative Theatre. This will offer audiences a chance to voice their opinion at every performance, take action, express their views and contribute to the proposal of new housing laws.
The new format follows the high-profile performance of Cathy at the House of Lords earlier this year when the company presented to MPs the top five housing laws suggested by audiences on the UK tour.
Reprising their roles in the show are: Alex Jones, Amy Loughton, Cathy Owen and Hayley Wareham.
First broadcast in 1966 on the
BBC, Cathy Come Home, the inspiration for Cathy, depicts a young family’s slide into homelessness. The first screening of the film led to public outrage at the state of housing in Britain and became a defining cultural landmark, demonstrating the power of art to effect social and political change.
Of the Cardboard Citizens staging last year, Ken Loach said: “There are more people made desperate by having no home now than when Cathy Come Home was first made. Then, we still had council housing… Now, we only have the market. And the market has failed. It gives us luxury apartments in tower blocks for investors while families live in over-crowded single rooms. The lesson from Cathy is that we need to plan – for council housing, for secure jobs alongside the houses and for a proper infrastructure for schools and healthcare. All the rest is propaganda.”
Cathy premiered in October at London’s Pleasance Theatre with The Stage commenting in its four star review: "At a time of escalating house prices and entrenched inequality, a touching and troubling productions like this may be just as urgent now as they were half a century ago."
As with all Cardboard Citizens productions, a proportion of tickets for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe run will be made available to people with experience of homelessness at £1.
Cathy follows Cardboard Citizens’ Home Truths, which features the world premieres of nine new plays exploring the history of housing.
What was the inspiration for this show?
Cathy Come Home is a seminal film, which changed the public debate about homelessness. We thought it was timely, on its 50th anniversary and 25 years since Cardboard Citizens was founded, to revisit its content and see what has changed (and what has not). What would a Cathy de nos jours look like? Would a family be broken up in the same way today, or have we learned more compassion?
Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
The proof is in the pudding: we played the show to
nearly 6000 people on its UK tour, followed by a Forum Theatre debate. In every venue there was vigorous participation. To end the show we invited the audience to suggest new housing laws that should be enacted to improve the situation. We collected hundreds of ideas and presented the most popular five after a special performance at the House of Lords in January this year, to accompany the second reading of the Homelessness Reduction Bill. Who says theatre does nothing?
How did you go about gathering the team for it?
We try to employ people with experience of homelessness when we can- in this case, we started with two actors out of four with this experience, one of whom sadly left during rehearsals because of health reasons. The show’s designer Lucy Sierra has collaborated with us before, and the stage management team were also old Cardboard Citizens’ friends. Many Cardboard Citizens’ members also appear in the filmed and recorded extracts that are integrated into the show.
How did you become interested in making performance?
I acted for a bit at university and found that directing was more fun. I always wanted to make theatre which spoke about important stuff. I founded Cardboard Citizens in 1991 after working with a group of street-dwelling homeless people who were living in what was then called Cardboard City, the underpass now occupied by the IMAX in London’s Southbank.
Was there any particular approach to the making of the show?
Our inspiration, Cathy Come Home, used vox-pops and true stories researched and woven together in a form which is close to documentary but with the full intensity of narrative and fiction. We followed the same formula. We have many homeless people around us at Cardboard Citizens, so there was no shortage of stories for us to base the show on.
Does the show fit with Cardboard Citizens’ usual productions?
We seek to tell untold stories, and we try whenever possible to stimulate debate. Homelessness is on the rise, after some years when the trend went the other way. We must not get used to stepping over bodies on the street – theatre can help us remember that this is not necessary or right.
What do you hope that the audience will experience?
They will be moved (if past form is anything to go by) and they will think about their own lives; I hope they will be angered, provoked into action.
What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?
We are experienced at stimulating debate – this show played in theatres, hostels and prisons during its premiere run in autumn 2016/winter 2017. For us it is also a goal to ensure that at any performance, even in theatres, the audience will be mixed, and will include people who have experienced homelessness themselves. This enriches the debate.
Adrian Jackson (director) is the Founder, Director and Chief Executive of Cardboard Citizens. Adrian founded Cardboard Citizens in 1991 and since then he has directed over 30 productions for the company, devising and writing many of them including Pericles and Timon (with
RSC) The Beggar’s Opera (with ENO),The Lower Depths (with London Bubble), Mincemeat (winner of Evening Standard award) and Home Truths (currently running at The Bunker in London).  He directed his own play, A Few Man Fridays at Riverside Studios in 2012, and Kate Tempest’s Glasshouse in 2013. In 2013 he also wrote and performed an intervention in Elmgreen/Dragset’s installation Tomorrow at the V & A. Adrian also teaches the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology all over the world.
Ali Taylor (playwright) trained at
the Royal Court Young Writers’ Programme. His first play Cotton Wool at Theatre503 won the 18th Meyer Whitworth Award. Ali went on to be one of the winners of ‘Metamorphosis08’, a new play competition run by the Churchill Theatre, Bromley, for his play Overspill. It was performed at the theatre before transferring to Soho Theatre. His writing for young people includes two plays for Polka Theatre: Sticks and Stones and an adaptation of The Machine Gunners (shortlisted for the Brian Way Award). His work also includesConspiracy (RWCMD/Gate Theatre), Under My Skin (Pegasus Theatre), Fault Lines (Hampstead Theatre) and his radio plays for BBC Radio 4 including Eight Feet High And Rising and Cinders.

Tony Ballantyne wrote in Interzone: "Let’s waste no time: this book is incredible."His latest novel, Dark Eden, was hailed by Stuart Kelly of The Guardian as "a superior piece of the theologically nuanced science fiction".Dark Eden was shortlisted for the 2012 BSFA Award for Best Novel. On 27 March 2013 it was announced that Julian Pavia at Broadway Books, part of the Crown Publishing Group, had acquired the US rights to Dark Eden and Gela's Ring from Michael Carlisle at Inkwell Management and Vanessa Kerr, Rights Director at Grove Atlantic in London, for a high five-figure sum (in US dollars).Beckett comments on his official website: "Although I always wanted to be a writer, I did not deliberately set out to be a science fiction writer in particular. My stories are usually about my own life, things I see happening around me and things I struggle to make sense of. But, for some reason, they always end up being science fiction. I like the freedom it gives me to invent things and play with ideas. (If you going to make up the characters, why not make up the world as well?) It’s what works for me."

Hyde Park High School walked away with the top prize at the 2016 Materials Science poster competition prize-giving held at Wits University earlier today. Gugulethu Ndlovu, Daniella Ferro and Jaydeen Govender won a cash prize of R15, 000 for their poster on Lonsdaleite which is also known as an hexagonal diamond.
The annual competition hosted by the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials invites Grade 10 learners from Gauteng schools to submit A3 posters on the properties and applications of a strong material
Grants and operations coordinator for the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials, Jacqui Jacobs says, “This competition has been formulated to attract more learners to the field of Material Sciences and hence develop their knowledge of properties and learn about the applications of strong materials.”
“This competition is aimed to give back to the community and educate learners about material science … Material Science is not widely advertised,” says Jacobs.
Learners from the second placed school, The King School West Rand, Eva Cheng, Nicole Botes and Nicole Hakutangwi said “teamwork played a big role in working together a group especially as friends, it was a lot of fun.” “There were a few arguments about what we should do in terms of the themes and layout, but it was an awesome experience,” said Botes. The team was rewarded with R10,000 for their effort.
The third place, and prize of R 5,000, was shared by The King’s College and Preparatory School (Bryanston).
Awards were handed over by the Director of DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials, Prof Lesley Cornish, the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Wits University Prof Helder Marques, and coordinator Prof Deena Naidoo.

They should lead by example – Gauteng MEC welcomes dismissal of coach found guilty of sex harassment
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the dismissal of a Bryanston High School sports coach, who was found guilty during disciplinary proceedings of sexually harassing pupils, and financial mismanagement.
In a statement on Friday, the school governing body (SGB) said a disciplinary panel found the coach guilty of all the charges he faced.
The alleged incidents of sexual assault were said to have taken place throughout 2017 and 2018, during netball matches and on school outings.
The coach, aged 33, who was appointed by the SGB, had been suspended in January pending the finalisation of his case.
“We welcome this sanction and urge educators to refrain from all types of misconduct as they should lead by example to ensure that learners mirror their conduct in creating a safe schooling environment, conducive for effective teaching and learning,” said Lesufi.
The department added that it had a zero-tolerance stance when it came to allegations of sexual assault and never hesitated to act where allegations were proven true.
“We encourage learners never to listen to anybody who tells them not to tell, for fear of victimisation. Learners must report such incidents to their parents, police or any other trusted figure of authority,” the department said.
The SGB urged all school governing bodies to deal with these types of issues expeditiously and with learners’ best interests in mind.
“The protection of learners should always take priority over the reputation of any institution,” it said.
The coach is expected to appear in the Alexandra Regional Court in connection with criminal charges on March 12.
