Animal of the Day!
Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Central Africa; Southern Africa
Size (Weight/Length)- 6 kg; 130 cm
Diet- Small mammals; Reptiles; Amphibians; Fruits; Insects
Cool Facts- Being the size of a turkey, the southern ground hornbill is the world’s largest hornbill. While males and females are similar in size, only the male sports the brilliant red skin on their throat while the female’s throat is more indigo. Southern ground hornbills will eat any animal that is smaller than themselves, ranging from bullfrogs to small monitor lizards to hares. These hornbills live in small, family oriented flocks. Adult offspring will stay with their parents for up to ten years, helping to raise their younger siblings. By learning how to parent their siblings, southern ground hornbills are much more successful at raising their own babies throughout their sixty year lifespan.
Rating- 12/10 (Extremely successful captive breeding programs.)

The Southern Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri)
Did you know ?
These beautiful creatures are a " slow-growing" species with a low reproduction rate - its estimated that 49% of breeding attempts fledge 1 chick, with only 39% of those chick's reaching maturity.
They also do not breed every year, as they are Monogamous, cooperative breeders - meaning their groups are made of between 2 - 11 birds with a dominant breading pair -with mostly male helpers, helping the breeding pair to defend their territory, with the breeding pair only fledging 1 chick every 9.5 years.

Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri)
Southern Ground Hornbills are cooperative breeders, with each breeding pair being assisted by at least two other birds. They are a very long-lived species, living up to 70 years in captivity, and 50-60 years in the wild. They are one of two species of ground hornbill.
