📸 FIELD CAPTURE REFERENCE SHEET B/W Subject Index for Process Zine
A working reference guide for capturing images and footage across black-and-white photography (Chinon CE-4 / 35mm film) and video (Sony Handycam CCD-TR680E), aimed at building a visual archive for the Process Zine (and signal // noise) project.
The aesthetic goal: something in the spirit of Aronofsky’s Pi — raw, grainy, high-contrast textures that mirror internal dissonance, confusion, and fragmented perception.
This index is less a shot list, more a field taxonomy — loosely grouped by themes like DIVIDE, INTERFERENCE, BODY AS INTERFACE, etc. It’s designed to help me (and maybe you) notice moments worth capturing: subtle distortions, audio echoes, liminal thresholds, or broken technologies that metaphorically or literally represent deafness, APD, and neurodivergent experience.
📄 Full PDF here: [link] 🖨️ Printed via thermal receipt printer — glitchy, impermanent, tactile.
If you have ideas for other keywords, subject matter, or visual metaphors tied to sensory processing, deaf culture, or communication breakdown — I’d love to hear them. Think of this as an evolving map.

My Unicorn Library
A list of the resources I own for unicorn folklore, mythology, and magic. Divided into different sections for easy access. If you have any I missed, please let me know! Under the cut I explain more about the books and why they are good/not great/trash.
Tumblr media
The Great:
The Natural History of Unicorns – Chris Lavers
The Book of the Mythical Unicorn – Vakasha Brenman and Alfonso Colasuonno
The Unicorn Tapestries – Margaret B. Freeman
Unicorn Magic – Tess Whitehurst
Unicornis – Michael Green
The Helpful:
A Complete Guide to Heraldry – Arthur Charles Fox-Davies
Llewellyn’s Little Book of Unicorns – Angela Wix
The Unicorn: A Mythological Observation – Robert Brown
Unicorn Magick – Lisa Papez (Youtube video)
How to Believe in Unicorns – Celestial Café Podcast (Youtube video)
Unicorn Sight – Elizabeth Barette (Spell on Llewellyn’s site)
The Fun: (Just light, fun books for unicorn lovers)
For Unicorn Lovers Only – Penelope Gwynne
The Unicorn Handbook – Carolyn Turgeon
Unicorn Your Life – Mary Flannery
Unicornucopa – Caitlyn Doyle (this one even has some cute spells!)
The Little Book of Unicorns – Orange Hippo! (this one even has some cute spells!)
The Meh:
Unicorn Rising – Calista
Unicorns – Skye Alexander
The Trash:
Anything by Diana Cooper
Anything by Flavia Kate Peters
the Treasure of the Unicorn – Ted Andrews
Unicorn Magic – Kitty Bishop
The Great:
The Natural History of Unicorns – Chris Lavers: Great source for the myth and history of the unicorn. Including dissecting the New Age view of the unicorn.
The Book of the Mythical Unicorn – Vakasha Brenman and Alfonso Colasuonno: So much history and all neatly organized by region. Some woo, but mostly legends and folklore.
The Unicorn Tapestries – Margaret B. Freeman: Focuses on the Unicorn Tapestries, but the book is huge and filled with interesting info about the folklore and beliefs around the unicorn.
Unicorn Magic – Tess Whitehurst: I doubted very much where I should put this one, in great or in helpful. But in the end, if you want to include unicorns into your magical practice, this is the book I would recommend. Not all of it is great. Whitehurst does have some New Age beliefs and like in most Llewellyn books there is some appropriation (chakra’s), but I have found the exercises to be invaluable. This book was what kickstarted my practice.
Unicornis – Michael Green: A “discovered fieldguide” dedicated to the unicorn. Gorgeous art and storytelling. Comparable to the Faery books of Brian Froud.
The Helpful
A Complete Guide to Heraldry – Arthur Charles Fox-Davies: Good source on the historical views of the unicorn, not only in the context of heraldry. Fascinating to read.
Llewellyn’s Little Book of Unicorns – Angela Wix: It is not easy finding books on unicorns from a witchcraft perspective. This book was fun to read and had some interesting correspondences, exercises, and spellwork in it. It’s not great, and as always there are chakra’s in the book (because Llewellyn) but it did help me a lot as an inspiration.
The Unicorn: A Mythological Observation – Robert Brown: A book from 1881! Interesting read, but very much influenced by the times and in places no longer accurate.
Unicorn Magick – Lisa Papez (Youtube video): Lisa talks about her favourite tools and books when it comes to practicing unicorn magic
How to Believe in Unicorns – Celestial Café Podcast (Youtube video): Two witches who practice unicorn magic discuss their views, where they differ and where they are the same. Very interesting!
The Meh:
Unicorn Rising – Calista: Okay, the book itself is not trash. It’s just not really about unicorns. It’s a pretty descent self help book, with interesting meditations, but if you’re looking for unicorn magic of inspiration this book isn’t useful for you.
Unicorns – Skye Alexander: Look, the book is… okay. It’s just not really deep, and won’t tell your anything you didn’t already know. It’s biased, like most Skye Alexander books, and I’m just not a fan.
The Trash:
Diana Cooper: Books are full on New Age drivel, like equating unicorns to angels, and stating that they come from the ninth, most pure of course, dimension. Lots of Christlight and other “Christ” references. It is a headache to read and honestly has nothing to do with unicorns. Just one demonstration:
Tumblr media
Flavia Kate Peters: Holy appropriation, Batman! Again, heavily New Age and equating unicorns to angels. Calls herself a “Faery Shaman”.
The Treasure of the Unicorn: If I have to read “the unicorn horn is a phallic symbol” one more time I am going to scream. It was torture to finish this book. Some interesting points like Storytelling as Ritual, but to be honest, it wasn’t worth it.
Unicorn Magic – Kitty Bishop: This person trained under Flavia Kate Peters and it shows. Same New Age beliefs repeated and very little expanded upon.

Heyyy! I know you're probably very busy but I just have these sudden wonders n such-
Anyway! How do you think HLC students and professors would react to M!MC that's a transfer from Durmstrang and knows only little English since he's Russian?
(I may or may not have a Russian MC and just want silly funny HC's so it's even more fun to play :).)
A/N: your MC sounds so cool!
HLC REACT TO RUSSIAN M!MC
SEBASTIAN SALLOW: He's not going to let some tall, dark and handsome silent newcomer intimidate him. He challenges MC to a duel every chance he gets. Leander who? MC is his rival now.
OMINIS GAUNT: He's never heard spoken Russian before. He's intrigued. Disappointed that MC can't communicate with him very well, but he still tries. MC seems to understand and at least answer yes or no questions. He's never enjoyed playing 20 questions so much.
ANNE SALLOW: Sebastian greatly undersold MC when he wrote to her. MC wasn't just some new kid. He was exotic. When he comes over with Sebastian, she asks so many questions. She wants to know every detail there is to know about him.
IMELDA REYES: She doesn't give a damn what language MC speaks, brooms are universal. Stop jabbering and race her already!
NATSAI ONAI: She knows exactly how MC feels. Moving to a new country with a new culture and language can be scary. Don't worry, she'll help in every way she can. (Honestly, hearing the two of them try to speak english to each other with their thick accents is cute AF)
GARRETH WEASLEY: DO NOT put MC next to him in potions. If MC doesn't understand the difference between wormbile and nightshade, things could get explosive. He gets too wrapped up in what he's doing to double check what MC handed him.
LEANDER PREWETT: He finds MC intimidating and tries to just stay out of the way. Even if MC is the nicest guy and just wants to ask for directions, he scampers off like MC will kill him with a look.
AMIT THAKKAR: He knows a little russian! He butchers the hell out of it, but he tries. He does get a bit embarrassed when MC tells him that he understands his english better.
EVERETT CLOPTON: He wants to hear stories about Durmstrang. The school is so secretive, surely MC can tell him a little? He won't tell anyone, promise.
POPPY SWEETING: What kind of beasts are common where MC's from? That's her main question. What's the wildlife like? Does Durmstrang have a beast class? Does MC have a pet? What are the poaching laws there? MC may have to hide from her.
~~~
ELEAZAR FIG: He speaks a little Russian from his travels with Miriam. Not enough to be conversational, but enough key words to understand what MC is saying if he speaks slow enough. He's at MC's beck and call, whatever he needs to help him improve his studies, he is available.
MATILDA WEASLEY: She goes out of her way to make sure MC has all the tools available to him to help him understand Hogwarts curriculum. The fieldguide she gives him is in Russian but can change to English to help him study.
AESOP SHARP: He speaks fluent Russian. He repeats any complicated instruction in Russian for MC. Aside from Fig, he's in the best position to help MC adjust to Hogwarts.
Everyone else would treat MC the same as any other student.
Sometimes I am so normal about my characters (think about how the monster hunting world that Will and Emily live in when they're old is so much more full, the profession is much more common and respected as belief has shifted, they themselves were able to shape it so much as some of the first but they know that no matter how professional it gets there is something inherent to the profession which makes you feel like you're the only people in the world standing on a doorstep facing the unknown so Will writes books about it not to make actual good fieldguides but to say we pioneered this life and we survived it, there's no place here for the idea that monster hunters have short lonely violent existences, you're not as isolated as you think and you don't have to die about it)
Hi Mr. Scherz! Since you didn’t like the design of metazooa, do you know of any other similar games that you liked more?
I play this great game called 'iNaturalist' where you can sit and try to help identify organisms based only on photographs and locations. Amazingly, the photos are all taken by real people and show real organisms, and even better, by helping to ID things (as long as you are doing it competently), you are actually contributing useful scientific information!
You can search by location and/or organism. So, say I want to go and look at all the orchids observed in Texas… I can just get a list of orchids that have been observed there, and go through and ID whichever ones I know.
This is a FANTASTIC way to get familiar with a fieldguide to a specific kind of organism for a specific area. So, say you want to get good at identifying frogs of Australia. You buy one of the books on Australian frogs, open up iNaturalist, and go through and see if you can key out/identify each photo. You have to take into account that the fieldbook might be outdated, but still, this is *super* useful.
Important: the app for iNaturalist is only really good for uploading your OWN observations (oh yeah, you can do that too!). If you want to play the ID game, I strongly advise using the browser version.
