#Bug Zapper Rackets

Honestly I just went on Amazon.ca (*spits* - but I keep being given gift cards so whatever) and did a search for “bug zapper racket”. This was just after getting back north, after my nephew using one on a house fly down in Toronto and reminded me of their existence - last time I saw one used prior to that was at a friend’s camp a couple decades ago.

Narrowed down some features I liked, like it being USB rechargeable. particular one I bought is not currently in stock, but looks like this and had multiple vendors using different names:

Basically it has three modes; entirely off, off unless you press switch, and continually on with “attractant light” lit (which also serves as a handy visual reminder to not touch it to anything). I have used it in attractant mode a couple of times, and have eventually heard a ZAP as it gets a mosquito, but no idea if that was actually working as advertised, or just the fly thinking it was a safe spot to land.

The one feature this didn’t have that I’d recommend looking for is an included cleaning brush, to safely clean the frazzled fly bits out of the screens.

I just heard someone say “kill colonies” while talking about bug sprays/pecticides, and now all I can think is how would much faster would Jane Prentiss have been rendered a non-threat if they had bug sprays/pesticides?

Alright, they mentioned having exterminators in to take care of the worm infestation to no avail, but what if they were able to use it directly on/at the thing that was once Jane Prentiss?

If Martin had a can or two of Raid, would he have been able to leave his flat earlier? If there had been containers of Ortho in the archives for the infestation and they threw that at “Jane”, I can’t imagine it would help the colony. It should at least slow it down, right? If someone had a bottle of OFF! to spray directly at her at relatively close range in a enclosed space, what would that do to the Hive? How great would it have been if someone had gotten a Crowley’s Plant Mister Moment?

And that’s not even getting into the tennis racket shaped bug zappers… The archival assistants definitely deserved an opportunity to go feral with handheld zappers. Tim probably would’ve been particularly enthused. Now that would have been quite the lightshow.

Expert fencer on the side and runs a tiktok account talking about different techniques and weapons throughout history. Is currently trying to make daggers out of bug zapper rackets for fun.

Autoimmune conniption fit.

SoCal is home to a lot of insects with attitudes. Right now, it is 'spider weather' where spiders try to share your AC - resulting in a bite earlier in the week followed by a whole-damn-house deep cleaning and spider remediation. It's also tarantula mating season, but I digress.

Yesterday, I took out the trash, and felt like I'd been tazered.

Red wasp and a big one.

The super heard me scream and came running. I went home and packed the sting with baking soda - it draws the yellowish venom out. Super soaked the nest with gasoline and lit a match. It was not a big nest, but reds are very intelligent and vindictive.

Yes, I am in my right mind.

One year we had to destroy a nest at work. Wasps can sting over and over, and one driver was stung badly enough that one warehouse guy used two Epi-pens on him until the ambulance showed up. The queen wasp haunted the parking lot for a couple of weeks, lurking and then flying out to sting. Boss got her with one of those bug zapper tennis rackets.

I'm ordering one now.

The swelling is not that bad, but the inflammation all through my body leaves me feeling like a head-to-toe contusion.

Oddly specific goals.
