i really love ‘now and then’ and not just because it’s a good song. For John, he’s telling Paul, he can’t live without him. Paul on the other hand is responding from the future, he’s telling John that he wishes things could have happens different. John says the lyric, “I know you’ll never stay,” but even then still holds on the hope that Paul will come back, “…always to return to me”. “Even if you think of it from the friendship pov, John clearly has a gap where Paul used to be. And for Paul, he feels almost guilt, if only things could have gone differently.
