Aida (Original Broadway Cast Recording) - 2000: A Spoiler Free Review
What’s it about?
A Nubian princess named Aida is captured by Egyptian forces and made a servant in the Pharaoh’s household, none of whom know she is a princess. She befriends Amneris, the Egyptian princess she’s acting as a handmaiden for, connects with the other Nubian servants in the household who believe she’ll lead them to freedom and starts to fall for the Amneris’ financ, Radames, captain of the Egyptian army. Radmes, incidentally, helped capture her people. She’s torn between her loyalty to her people and her feelings for Radmes. It’s loosely based on the Italian opera, “Aida,” by Giuseppe Verdi. It’s also an official Disney Theatrical Productions show, so make of that what you will.
Controversy Acknowledgement (i.e. Is it “problematic” in any way?)
This is one of those shows in which (at least in the Western world and especially during its early years) the Egyptian characters were/are often played by white actors, probably to help visually differentiate them from the Nubians, who are almost always played by black actors, the main-ish four Nubians at least (Aida, Nehebka, Mereb and Amonasro. The ensemble is a bit of a mixed bag.) And that’s a bit of a problem since the Egyptians enslave the Nubians and a show set in ancient Egypt should be a gold mine for PoC actors. I don’t think anyone was thinking about that in 2000 when they were casting for it though. It’s just a common white person thing to cast white people as Egyptians. “The Ten Commadments did it (twice), Cleopatra did it*, so it’s fine if we do it. But the Nubians definitely need to be black, because this is an inclusive show,” is the type of logic I’m sure they were operating under. The seemingly easy solution here is, “just use an all black cast.” BUT, it’s also important to remember that Western perceptions and understandings of race can’t be applied to Egypt. I don’t think it’s too controversial to say that Hamilton style casting (only PoC leads, but white actors can still work the ensemble) would probably better represent modern Egyptian relations to race.
Was it wrong of them to cast so many white actors in the Broadway productions of this musical? Well, I think so. This show has a lot of short comings in terms of casting and race relations, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the recording. Especially since this show is almost 20 years old. You don’t have to support it financially if you don’t want to. It is absurdly easy to listen to this musical online and avoid buying directly from official sources if you want a physical copy.
* Yeah, yeah the actual Cleopatra VII was Macedonian, I’m talking about literally everyone else in the movie.
Have you seen this show live?
Nope. Never watched a recording either. I’ve read A LOT about it though. (It was my obsession for quite awhile.)
Top 5 Songs
Enchantment Passing Through [Reprise]
The Gods Love Nubia
Not Me
A Step Too Far
My Strongest Suit
What’s your personal opinion on this show and this specific recording?
First of all let me say that choosing a top 5 was supremely difficult for me, but I’m going to stick to this format dammit! (Fortune Favors the Brave came very close to being 5 though, so close.)
Now, this show overall is one of my all time favourite musicals. Aida’s defining trait more than anything else is its great energy. It just feels so lively and engaging all the way through. I think Adam Pascal’s rock and roll voice and Heather Headly’s powerful gospel belting help hold together all the song styles, along with Elton John’s very ‘90s pop song sound™ as a constant undercurrent. You can very much feel Elton John’s style in these songs. I mean, I’m not even that familiar with his work, I know of him mostly from The Lion King and The Road to El Dorado, but it sounds like him and this musical sounds like those movies. So if you watched those two movies a lot as a kid, let me assure you this is the musical for you.
Speaking of assuring you, I also think this is an excellent intro musical for people who want to get into them but can’t afford to actually see shows all the time, just listen to the albums. It’s very easy to follow what’s happening the entire way through. The lyrics are very straight forward and keep you informed. And most importantly for people who aren’t too into musicals, the big exposition dump songs never really take you out of the story because they are almost always executed as the characters having conversations with each other. Thank Tim Rice for that one, he really knows what he’s doing. I also think Tim Rice and Elton John work brilliantly together and I wish they collaborated more outside of this and The Lion King. I’d pay so much money for that.
Would you recommend seeing this show if possible or is the cast album good enough?
...I’m not too sure, actually. I know that no one can compare to Heather Headley (I LOVE her SO MUCH, you don’t even understand) and Adam Pascal. But I also know that the professional productions overall are quite visually appealing. I’d say... I’d probably see this if a high end, major production company put it on (and were more conscious of their casting). But I maybe wouldn’t bother with small local theatre productions if you REALLY FALL IN LOVE with this musical. The cast recording and your imagination should be enough. It’s just that grand.
Where can I listen to this?
Here’s not one, but two YouTube links in case one doesn’t work.
It’s also available on iTunes and physical copies are super easy to find and dirt cheap on Amazon and eBay. Used copies obviously, but if you don’t want to pay iTunes or Amazon for MP3 copies they are legitimately $0.02 + shipping.
Here’s a link to a link, because I’m absolutely paranoid tumblr’s auto-detection copyright bullshit is gonna get me. I swear it’s legit.

Hey doll hey!! How’s your day/night going? Great I hope. I woke up super late today …. around 10:45 AM. Had a rough go at it trying to stay asleep last night … I just kept waking up and then it would take forever to fall back asleep. I’m in a considerable amount of pain today. Thank goodness I don’t have to cook tonight since we normally eat left overs on Wednesdays to make sure we aren’t wasting food.
Today I am wearing Davidoff Cool Waters perfume. So let’s jump into today’s Face of the Day ….
Base:                                                                                                                                                         I first primed my problematic pore areas with Tarte Clean Slate Timeless Smoothing Primer ($39 at Ulta) and then primed the full face using VDL Pantone Collection Lumilayer Primer ($32 at Ulta). My foundation today is NYX Born to Glow Naturally Radiant Foundation ($10 at Ulta) in the shade Nude. I contoured using Charlotte Tilbury Contour Wand ($38 at Sephora) in the shade Medium/Dark. I highlighted the tops of my cheek bones, bridge of the nose, center of the chin, and high points of my forehead using Charlotte Tilbury Glowgasm Beauty Light Wand ($38 at Sephora) in the shade Glodgasm. I then went in with the Charlotte TIlbury Beauty Light Wand ($38 on the Beautylish website) and tapped that over the highest points of my face. I concealed my under eyes using 3 dots of  NYX Born to Glow Radiant Concealer ($9 at Ulta) in the shade Fair. I set my under eyes using Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder for Under Eyes ($28 at Ulta) in the shade 1 and then set the rest of my face using the  Too Faced Born This Way Ethereal Setting Powder ($33 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade Translucent. I then warmed up the perimeter of my face using Tarte Limited Edition Park Ave Princess Waterproof Face & Body Bronzer ($34 at Ulta). I am using Rimmel London Stay Matte Powder ($4 at Walmart) in the shade 011 creamy natural as my touch up powder today.
Please ignore the visible lash glue on the right (your left) lash band…. I didn’t notice it until I had already uploaded the pictures.
Eyes:                                                                                                                                                         I set my brows using Believe Beauty Eyebrow Styling Gel ($4 at Dollar General) in clear and then filled in my brows using Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade 4.5 and then I primed my lids using P.Louise Base ($10 pound sterling/ $12.08 USD on their website… can also be found on the Morphie website for $15) in the shade Rumour 0.5 and I also used a little of this to cut my brow line. For today’s eye look I used the Juvia’s Place The Nubian Eyeshadow Palette ($20 at Ulta). I started with the 2nd shade of the 3rd row (brown matte) all through the crease. I then took a bit of NYX Glitter Primer ($6.50 at Ulta) and covered my full mobile lid. I took the 4th shade of the 1st row (champagne shimmer) a patted that over the inner 2/3 of the mobile lid and then went in with the 1st shade of the 2nd row (light Gold with Pink undertones shimmer) and patted that over the outer 1/3 blending it into the middle 1/3 to gradiated the two shades. I then went into the 4th shade of the 3rd row (ebony brown matte) and buffed that into the very outer part of the mobile lid and into the outer v of the crease. I then highlighted my brow line using L’Oreal Infallible 24-HR Eyeshadow ($9.47 at CVS) in the shade 899 Endless Pearl (a creamy vanilla matte). I created a subtle drop shadow using more of the brown shade and then more of the dark ebony shade close to the lash line. I then took the 4th shade of the 2nd row (bronze gold metallic) and tapped that along the lash line and then went back to the dark ebony shade to add a bit of depth to the drop shadow. I highlighted the inner corners using Hikari Creme Pigment ($15 on their website) in the shade Honey Dew (icy pink with slight silver reflect metallic). I lined my lower waterlines using ColourPop BFF Gel Eye Liner ($6 on their website) in the shade Get Paid (rose gold metallic) and then coated my upper and lower lashes with 2 coats of Milani Dangerous Lengths Mascara ($9.99 at Ulta) and popped on a pair of Kiss Looks So Natural Lash ($11.99 at Ulta for a 5 pack) in the style Flirty.
Cheeks and Lips:                                                                                                                               For blush today I am wearing Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-HR Blush ($29 at Ulta) in the shade Captivating (bright peach matte). I lined and filled in my lips using NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner ($4 at Ulta) in the shade Wipped Caviar (a reddish pink nude) and then topped that off with L’Oreal Rouge Signature Lightweight Matte Lip Stain ($5.99 at Ulta) in the shade 448 I-Tease (a soft taupey pink matte) and felt that this was too muted so I tapped a few dots of Makeup Geek Creme Stain ($11.99 on their website) in the shade Jitterbug (an intense coral matte) and then I felt that this was too dry looking so I topped the whole lip off using NARS Lip Gloss ($24 on the NARS website) in the shade Chihuahua  (Sheer Guava).
ooof… that lash glue though…
Final Thoughts:                                                                                                                                      I really am enjoying this Juvia’s Place palette. It’s simple but beautiful and the eye combinations are truly endless with this palette. I can’t wait for next month so that I pick up a few more of their palettes.
I already made my April beauty buys but I ended up cheating and Ordered Boots #7 Protect & Perfect Advanced All in One Foundation in the shade Calico because I was ordering my face serum and just needed 1 more item for free shipping… I know it doesn’t make sense to spend extra money to get free shipping but I somehow always end up falling for it and purchasing that extra item to get it ….
Well that’s all for now dolls. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day/night and pray that you have both good spirits and health this day. Thank you for taking time out of your day to spend with me and remember …. Save a spoon for a bit of lipstick.
XOXO
Sunset Inspired Eye Look Face of the Day Hey doll hey!! How's your day/night going? Great I hope. I woke up super late today ....

The 9 Best Bra Brands Every Woman Should Know About
When it comes to finding your new favorite undergarment, you don’t have to get stuck scouring the racks at your local department store, trying to find something in your size while avoiding an awkward fitting with a pushy salesperson. In many cases, the best bra brandsreally are only a click away.
Of all of the things I buy online, I never thought a bra would end up being one of them. Bras were always something that I had to try on in person. The fit always seemed too unpredictable, after all, no matter how many times I was measured and found to be the same size.
But my fear of bra shopping online has starting to dissipate thanks in part to a number of bloggers and YouTubers, such as The Lingerie Addict and Fuller Figure Fuller Bust, who review and write about bras. Not only does it help to get blogger feedback on the fit and construction of these items, but bloggers also play a big role in introducing us to new brands in the first place.
Although there may be one or two known bra giants in this world, I believe that one brand cannot be all things to all people. I wanted to highlight some of the other bra brands that have earned their own customer loyalties for taking a unique approach to the world of brassieres. Here are some of my favorites.
1.
Curvy Kate
Curvy Kate is a UK-based lingerie company that launched in 2009. It is known for its extensive size range, which goes from a D to a K cup. These bras come in a range of styles, such as the Balcony Princess Bra and the Luxe Multiway/Strapless Bra.
Curvy Kate stands out because of its customer focus, though. When I went on the website, I wasn’t surprised to see that its most recent blog post highlighted nine customers who killed it in 2015(customers of all sizes and abilities). Curvy Kate is also known for its Star In A Bra Competition and model search, which is open to all sizes, heights, and frames and allows customers to see how their products will fit on a range of bodies.
Curvy Kate Balcony Princess Bra, $68, Amazon; Curvy Kate Luxe Multiway/Strapless Bra, $75, Amazon
2.
Curvy Couture Intimates
As the name suggests, Curvy Couture Intimates is a plus size lingerie brand. It makes bras in C to H cups and in a range of comfy and sexy styles. I’m still obsessing over the Love Affair Bra, but I think what I love most about Curvy Couture is its social media engagement within the plus size fashion community.
I first found Curvy Couture through Instagram, where the brand gives a great behind-the-scenes look of its fashion shows and pop-up shops. I’ve even seen it post open model calls through social media platforms. A brand that is engaged with its customers — especially in the plus size community — is definitely something to take note of.
Curvy Couture Love Affair Bra, $55, Amazon
3.
Nubian Skin
Nubian Skin is a must-know bra brand because it offers nude and skin tone bras for women of color. It is such a genius idea that it earned the brand’s creator, Ade Hassan, the title of Fashion Entrepreneur Of The Year at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in 2015. The brand offers a handy skin tone guidebased on a number of known foundation shades, which is also incredibly genius. Nubian Skin’s bras are available up to a size 40DD.
4.
Chromat
If you recognize the cage structure of the bra above, it’s likely that you’ve seen one of the many knock-offs that this underwire bralette from Chromat arguably inspired. With a background in architecture and urban design, Chromat’s designer Becca McCharen makes these structural masterpieces by hand. Seen on the likes of Nicki Minaj, Madonna, and famously featured in Beyoncé’s 2014 VMA performance, Chromat is an absolute force. The brand is also beloved for its New York Fashion Week shows, at which models of a range of ethnicities, sizes, and gender identities all have a place.
5.
The Little Bra Company
As someone who can’t actually fit into the products of almost every plus size bra company, I was sure glad to discover The Little Bra Company. The struggle to find cute bras really affects both ends of the size spectrum, from petite to plus. The Little Bra Company caters specifically to petite-busted babes and specializes in band and cup sizes that are often difficult to find, including 28 to 38A, 28 to 36B, and 28 to 34C. The brand’s styles feature sexy lace and embellishments that are a far cry from the usual petite options out there that look like training bras.
6.
Neon Moon
Neon Moon is a British brand that got its start in 2015 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. This bra brand stands out for its feminist mission, which is against sweatshops, objectification, Photoshop, and sexualization, according to its website. The concept is both bold and brilliant.
Whether it’s combating online fat shamers or creating the #IAmNeonMoon campaign, this is one brand making a big impact in spreading body positivity and acceptance. And, of course, its soft cup bras are incredibly cute.
7.
Dottie’s Delights
Dottie’s Delights is definitely a go-to for vintage-inspired, high-end bras. Founded in 2010, designer Stephanie Kuhr was one of six residents in the Chicago Fashion Incubator sponsored by Macy’s and the City Of Chicago, according to the brand’s website. Dottie’s Delights has completed two collections every year since.
With an aesthetic range that encompasses turn of the century styles to those of the 1960s, Dottie’s Delights have been seen on Violet Chachki, Sabina Kelley, and Holly Madison, and are favorites for lovers of burlesque. The brand’s current size range for bras goes up to an F cup; and even through its growth, it continues to offer custom sizing and design alterations.
8.
Sofyee
Sofyee is a very young but fast-growing brand that established in 2017. I came to know sofyee because one of my girl friend refer this article https://www.sofyee.com/blogs/sofyee-press/7-reasons-why-sexy-lingerie-is-women-s-best-friend to me. Specialized in cute sexy sheer see through bras, bold enough to use different materials to design. It’s such a brand that you can always find sheer bra and panty sets that increasing your heart rates.

Shea Moisture's Bad Marketing and a List Of Beauty Brands That Center Black Women
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting enough, I interviewed Richelieu Dennis, CEO of Sundial brands which produces Nubian Heritage and Shea Moisture, and in our interview, he didn’t seem tone-deaf to the importance of why black women and other women of color need brands that understand the importance of black hair care and textures.
Shea Moisture is having a tough week and it’s only Tuesday. Their latest ad which appeared to erase their loyal fanbase, has been the talk of the week. Even with a very lazy ( and non-PoC centered) apology, customers are looking for beauty and hair care brands that prefer to keep black women a priority in their visual marketing. They since have deleted the ad, but here is a previous ad that raised a few eyebrows as well.
Tumblr media
The new Shea Moisture
“Over the last 25 years, I’ve received questions and judgments about our products and our business that I’m pretty sure few, if any, white-owned businesses have ever had to answer – like “Since you’re Black, your products are just for Black people, right?” Here’s the reality: Black beauty is at the forefront of the beauty revolution – from the mass shift to demanding natural ingredients to the natural, textured hair that we now see on runways, in advertisements and on the covers of international magazines and beyond. So, we have to be positioned to serve all consumers as other groups evolve into embracing new, more inclusive beauty standards. It is critical that we capture the market we have created and that we don’t leave it for someone else to capitalize on – which has historically been the case. The landscape is changing so quickly with more companies now trying to compete in the market, and part of what’s been missing in our community has been businesses that had access to capital, resources and market opportunities to compete at another level, grow and scale – so they end up stagnant and struggling,” Richelieu Dennis confirmed with me. Of course this was late last summer, but what a difference a day makes, right?
Tumblr media
*stares Dinah Washingtonly*
“Black-owned beauty brands are often pigeon-holed – not because their products aren’t effective, but because of the assumption that they will only work for a single group of people. So, their community gets arbitrarily limited from the beginning. In addition, they often do not have the resources that allow them to compete against the large conglomerates that come in, lift their ideas & then scale them out of reach. For more than two decades, we have had the full spectrum of experiences that many minority entrepreneurs encounter, including being repeatedly denied by numerous landlords to rent office and manufacturing space, to being typecast as having products with singular market appeal, to considering how to access the necessary capital to grow and sustain our business. I have witnessed Black-owned companies – some of which stood beside me on the streets of Harlem, selling their goods and igniting global trends – who are no longer around today because larger companies, with infinitely more resources, capitalized on the trend, captured the market and put them out of business. We must continue to have these conversations and work towards the solutions that make these occurrences the exception and not the norm,” Dennis also stated. Now, after reading this again and seeing what has transpired with the brand makes me feel a bit confused. Is Shea Moisture only Black-Owned in name only?
This @SheaMoisture debacle goes directly to the issue of the dearth of Black Women in leadership. EVEN in "Black" organizations. #DoBetter pic.twitter.com/BnyawUrKes

There are so many questions I have. I knew from the tweet replies from Shea Moisture’s account that it was from a marketing agency and it was confirmed that it was indeed Vayner Media campaign. My experience in media is an on-going love/hate relationship. I don’t understand why a black brand with a demographic of black women would not have black women on their social media team. Vayner Media not only handled their social media wrong, but they replied and complimented one of the Ashy Supremes in their standard customer service-like tweets.
@tariqnasheed We can't thank you enough for your loyalty and support. It's wonderful people like you that keep us going strong, Tariq! 😊
— SheaMoisture (@SheaMoisture) April 24, 2017
If you are looking for a black-owned beauty brand that caters to black women, here is a list I recommend. The comment section is open, so please add more to this list. People are missing the point in this conversation; Black women don’t have the luxury of going to a local or mainstream drugstore and having several options of hair care products to choose from. In fact, I’m willing to bet black hair care is still in a special section in the beauty aisle at the bottom ( I’m sure some of this has changed, but not much). I think the real anger stems from black women trying to consciously support brands that cater to their individual needs. Moisture is a big concern for a lot of naturals and I don’t think naturals, no matter what spectrum they are on the grade scale, have the same concerns that non-WoC with fair, red hair or oily, blonde hair have.
I don’t understand the #HairHate campaign either. I’ve never heard about loose curled women or women who “suffer” from straight hair being forced to assimilate. But it’s clear that Shea Moisture wants to be the next Suave. Also, men weighing in on this; shut the fuck up. Shut all the way the fuck up and let the door hit you where the good Lord split you. Shut up and have a seat at the table and listen to Solange. Men, especially black men don’t need to continue to dissect black women’s hair conversations. Unless you are asking for advice, tips and brand related questions, please, shut the fuck up.
Tumblr media
Sometimes it’s OK to be silent.
Ok, we cool? We don’t need you guys doing ashy mental gymnastics on what products black women should or shouldn’t be buying. Thanks!

Hints
Bounty Missions
On the bounty mission when you are going after Eeth Koth turn around and face the window. Then throw your bombs about 4-5 times then he will jump down from the ceiling. (the quicker you do it, the more money you get from Ziro the Hutt. )
Characters
The more characters you get the closer you get to completing the game. If you fly over to the separatist ship you can buy more characters. If you get a lot of gold bricks you can unlock more doors and places which can unlock more characters and secret separatists missions.
Minikit
If you get all the minikits in a mission they will unlock the original Lego star wars characters like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Darth Maul and you can get Vader’s Apprentice. If you go to the main starting area take a small character, like yoda or wag too, build the small duct entrance to the left, go in it then you will find the red brick called red brick finder. Then using the red brick finder find the red brick called minikit detector. Then when in a mission pause the game, hit extras, turn on the minikit detector and then find all the minikits so you can get all the characters.

Isis: House of Isis Sample Chapter!
Next Month I’m going to be releasing the latest Isis series book, Isis Samurai Goddess with a MIND SHATTERING MASTERPIECE of a cover by Bill Walko! Those who followed my Twitter and Facebook got a Sneak peek of that cover, and on Monday I’ll be revealing it here for the rest of my regular readers!
Some of my Facebook friends have been really excited about the Isis series book I’ve currently been working on Isis: House of Isis. And in this story The goddess next door runs into HOTEPs, Brothers and sisters the ones who say that the Black Woman is God and that Black people are descendants of the Egyptian Pharaohs and kings! I got inspired to write this one after my interactions with real life HOTEPS and Pro-Blacks, and I thought I’d show everyone what I’ve learned about Egyptian and Nubian Mythology and African-American history in this story.
Everything in Isis: House of Isis is still a FIRST DRAFT. So it’s likely to change dramatically in the actual published edition!
  Chapter 2
I catch the reflection of the pouty expression on my face in a store window as we head down Lenox Avenue. I’m not happy about having my football game interrupted. But if Doc thinks going to this church is important, I can attend one service.
I admit I’ve been a pretty lousy Christian the last forty years. The last time I set foot in a church was for my best friend Alma’s funeral. Back in the early twentieth century Andrea Thomas Robinson was a regular member of Church in Oneonta County and Atlanta on the Spelman campus. But when I started seeing my friends and Theta sisters pass away in the 1970s I just did my best to avoid church. It was just too hard to focus on having a relationship with Christ in Church when I kept seeing people I loved leave this earth.
Doc gives me a curious look as we approach the corner. “What keeps you out of church these days Princess?” she asks.
“I got tired of going to funerals.” I sigh.
“You know you’re going to have to go to mine one day.”
And that’s gonna be one of the saddest days of my life. Doc is the last of my living friends from the 20th Century. When she goes home to be with our Lord, I’m truly gonna be alone in this world for the first time in a hundred years. “Don’t remind me.”
“I know. But you have to face the fact that I’m not gonna be around much longer Princess.”
My eyes grow wide after she says that. “Are you-”
“No, my doctor says I’m healthier than most of the twenty-year-olds he sees.” Doc chuckles. “But I’d like to think it’d be prudent for you to start expanding your social circle before I pass.”
“Is that why you want me to go back to church?”
“You came back to resume your work here. It’s kind of hard to find out what’s going on today with people hanging around old timers like me-”
If it wasn’t for her I doubt I’d be as connected to some of the people I’ve met this go around the world. “Hey, I’m just waiting to go where I’m needed.”
“And you really need to spend some time in church while you wait. You know Alma’s granddaughter goes to Greater Abyssinian over on Fredrick Douglass-”
We just keep missing each other. “So she’s going to be at the afternoon service?”
Doc flashes me a playful smile. “She was at the morning service with me.”
“So we’re going to the afternoon service to meet the pastor?”
“Maybe next week.” Doc says. “This is a church you’ve got to see to believe.”
My curiosity is piqued when Doc turns the corner of 133rd Street and starts heading down towards Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. When she stops in the middle of the block, I peer up at the gold plated sign above the storefront decorated in hieroglyphs saying THE HOUSE OF ISIS in bold letters. I don’t know whether to be impressed or to sue for copyright infringement.
“I guess these sermons here would be right up my alley.” I say. “I didn’t know anyone still practiced the Old Heliopolitan faith.”
“Maybe, maybe not. But I thought you should take a look around before you decided to bring your wrath down on these blasphemers.”
Well, I wouldn’t the family putting a spell of pestilence on innocent people. I get the door for Doc and we step on the parquet floors of the storefront temple. I’m surprised to see it’s a full house. When I look over at the group of men and women dressed in Afrocentric formal wear sitting in the series of folding chairs arranged in front of the stage across the room. I peer down at the black leather jacket, white blouse, blue jeans, and Chelsea boots and wonder if I’m dressed too casually for this trip to the temple. “Maybe I should have dressed for service.” I say.
“I think you’re okay.” Doc replies. “Besides, you wouldn’t want to make a bad first impression on these mere mortals by tripping on the train of your New Heliopolitan gown.”
“Or have that blasted tiara fall in my eyes.”
As I peruse the shelves at the front of the store I notice that they have tubs of Shea butter, bottles of oils, and bars of Black soap for sale. “I guess these are for purification rituals.”
Doc is about to say something when a tall, muscular chocolate colored man dressed in a black tunic, pants and sandals approaches us. “When you purify your body you purify your mind my sista.” He says.
I greet his charming smile with a cheeky one of my own. “And how would these products allow me to purify myself…”
“Jamar, humble servant of the Priestess.” Jamar continues. “These processed products made by The White Man are filled with toxic chemicals that destroy your hair and your body.” The man says brushing back his long dreadlocks. “With the natural products made by our High Priestess, your natural hair and body will remain healthy and strong the way the goddess intended.”
I guess I wouldn’t know the difference between the natural hair care processes I used to use in Nubia and the shampoo I buy at Sepia with my invulnerability. But I’ll go along with the sales pitch. “Goddess?”
“Yeah, the Black Woman is God.”
I give him a curious look on the declaration of his faith. “God?”
“Yeah, The Black woman birthed the Universe from her womb. Everything on this earth came out of her.”
That’s not what I read in my Bible. Heck, It’s not even what I know about my own family. But I’ll go along so I can find out what goes on in this so-called House of Isis. “Everything?”
“Yeah, everything. All you see here in this neighborhood was created by our goddess the Black woman.”
Yeah, Black women created all this. Thanks to them embracing the ideologies of White feminists and the welfare state of White liberal politicians in the 1970s they created all the out of wedlock babies, the drugs, crime, and all the poverty that have become staples of this neighborhood. But I won’t educate him on the truth yet. There’s still a lot I need to learn about this house of worship with my name on it. “So all Black women are goddesses?”
“Yeah. Even a mixed sista like you has some of the goddess’ spiritual energy flowing through her.”
If only he knew I was born in Nubia. “Mixed?”
“Yeah, with that light hair and that light skin you definitely got some Irish and Italian in your family.”
“Irish and Italian?”
“It’s clear you ain’t a full melanated person like myself.” The man continues. “True Black people like myself have darker skin because we have deeper connection to Kemet.”
Being the daughter of Osiris I’ve got far more melanin than everyone in the room. “Kemet?”
“That’s Egypt’s original name before the White Man changed it to suit his version of White Supremacist version of history.”
We never called it Kemet in any of the official Nubian texts. “They always called it Egypt when I was in college-”
“That’s the name the White Man gave our homeland in his education system.” Jamar continues. “The information about our true Black heritage is in the books the Priestess sells here.”
I look over at the series of paperback books on the bookshelf with hieroglyphs on the cover. “Where would I start learning more about the real Kemet in her books?” I inquire.
Jamar smiles on hearing my interest in Kemet. “I’d love to suggest a few titles to you right now my sista, but The Priestess is about to make her Afternoon Devotions and I have to help her with that.”
“Would you be able to show me a few later?”
I’m given a flirtatious smile filled with anticipation. “I’d be glad to show you all of the Priestesses’ literature after Devotions.”
“Great.”
Jamar hurries across the parquet floors, up the stairs and up to the stage. As he rushes behind a curtain, Doc and I find seats in the back. “He’s a sexy piece of hot chocolate.” Doc says.
“I think he likes me.” I say.
“Are you catching the spirit Princess?”
“Maybe. I’m curious to what the Priestess will have to say during her Afternoon Devotion.
Isis: House of Isis is still being written as we speak. But if you drop a donation to the paypal link at the top of the screen to pay for the cover, I can put it on the fast track for to be available for the Summer reading season!
