Dean knocks on the bedroom door, his left knee shaking as he stares down at his stupid bouquet of flowers. He had bought them at the time thinking it'd be funny. He hoped to lighten the mood. They just got back from getting a flower - an ugly, disgusting one. These would be better. It'd make Castiel smile.

Dean really wanted to make Castiel smile.

But the flowers are stupid and smooshed and Dean's an idiot. He shouldn't even be here. He just admitted to Cas his darkest fear - the anger that's always brewed inside him. The anger he's never been able to control. Why would he ever think Castiel would want him after that?

Just as Dean turns around, deciding this entire thing was a mistake, the bedroom door opens behind him.

"Dean?" Dean hangs his head, closing his eyes when he sees the damn flowers again. A tentative hand rests on his shoulder. "Dean..."

"Don't worry 'bout it."

"About what?"

Dean pulls away from Castiel's touch but doesn't leave.

He can't.

He also can't come up with a lie right now. Not with Castiel so close. Not when his brain is short-circuiting, refusing to focus on anything other than how close he just was to admitting his feelings to Castiel.

"Are those flowers?" Castiel asks softly.

Shit.

Dean glares at the bouquet where one of the white roses is smudged orange from the snapdragon crushed against it. He found it charming when Castiel had said he smooshed the blossom in Purgatory. He doubts this is charming.

Leave it to Dean Winchester to fuck up a simple love confession. All he had to do was keep the damn things intact for a car ride of three blocks and one set of stairs in the bunker.

"I got them for you," Dean eventually mumbles.

"May I-" Castiel pauses. Steps closer. Puts his hand on Dean's shoulder again. "May I see them?"

"Of course. They're yours."

The bad part of Dean turning to show Castiel the flowers is that it reveals Dean's blushing face.

The good part of Dean turning to show Castiel the flowers is that it somehow jogs his brain into functioning enough to lie.

"They're an apology." Yes. That's perfect. Dean stands up a little straighter and gives Castiel a semi-confident smile. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry, again. For… everything."

"Oh. Well, thank you. I love them."

"They're smooshed." Dean shrugs. "I sorta ruined 'em."

The small smile that pulls at Castiel's lips matches the one he gave Dean when he had handed him the blossom and declared that he smooshed it. Something flutters in Dean's heart at the idea that Castiel made the connection.

After a moment, Castiel shakes his head. He touches a fingertip to one of the peach lilies and flicks his gaze up to Dean. "They're beautiful."

Dean swallows the cheesy not as beautiful as you and says instead, "Anyway, it's late. Been a long day. I'll let ya sleep."

"Of course. Goodnight, Dean."

"Night, Cas."

When Dean turns away, he catches a glimpse of Castiel sniffing the flowers. It reminds him of those brides you always see smelling their flowers in wedding photos. Dean can almost picture that. Castiel in a tux, his hair a mess, his eyes as bright as the blue sky above them. Reading cheesy vows that would make Dean groan in embarrassment even though he secretly loves each word. Leaning in to smell his flowers just as the wedding photographer snaps a picture.

Dean realizes he's standing in place, openly staring over his shoulder at Castiel. When their eyes meet, both of them blushing, Castiel offers him a hopeful smile.

Dean looks down the hall again, toward his bedroom where he was headed a second ago. He tries to walk away. To leave Castiel with his flowers and the wrong impression. He really does.

But his feet don't move.

Screw it.

Dean pivots on one foot and looks at Castiel with wide eyes. The angel lowers his bouquet and tilts his head in that adorable way he always does. "Dean?"

"They aren't an apology."

"They - what?"

"The flowers. I got them for you but not to apologize."

Castiel laughs softly under his breath but it's not cruel or teasing. It's confused. Nervous. Tentative. "What for then?"

Now or never, Winchester.

Like a band-aid.

Just do it.

"I love you," Dean blurts out in a way that would surely be comedic if it wasn't him that had done it.

Castiel's lips part as he sucks in a breath. He glances at the flowers before raising his gaze to look at Dean. A giddy smile that Dean hasn't seen since Jack was alive makes its way across Castiel's chapped pink lips. "These flowers are of a romantic nature?"

Leave it to Castiel Novak to make romance sound robotic.

Dean rolls his eyes but smiles fondly. "Yes, Cas."

"I love you too, Dean."

The world shifts. "R - Really?"

Castiel nods rapidly. "Very much so."

Feeling slightly shocked - and extremely unworthy - all Dean can manage is a whispered, "Awesome."

"Do we go on a date now?"

The smile freezes on Dean's face as his heartbeat fills his ears. "We - I mean, I - if you… maybe?"

"Maybe?"

Dean clears his throat and tries again. "If you would be okay with it, yes. I - I'd like to take you on a date."

"I'd love that." Castiel beams at him for a moment before walking past him and down the hall. "Just let me find a vase for these! Then we can go."

Dean watches the angel disappear, feeling a bit off-center. He certainly hadn't meant for them to go on a date right now. It's nearly 2 a.m. They had an awful day. Castiel almost died. They failed at defeating Chuck. Dean's exhausted.

Well, he was a minute ago.

Now he’s wide awake.

Dean grabs his jacket and phone from his room, checking to make sure his keys and wallet are in the pockets of his coat. He heads to the kitchen as he hurriedly pulls up google on his phone. Two places are still open this late at night in Lebanon, Kansas.

A bar - the town's only one.

Dean slips his phone into his pocket as he formulates a plan. He's grinning hard enough for it to hurt, and it only gets worse when he walks into the kitchen to find Castiel gingerly guiding the stems of the flowers into an old Jack Daniels bottle now filled with water.

"Dude, flowers?" Sam teases Dean, looking just as hopelessly lovestruck as he holds Eileen in his lap. She had returned about an hour ago, unable to stay away from the one she loves - Chuck pulling the strings or not.

Dean understands the feeling.

"Don't judge my flowers," Dean says with a death glare.

"They're all broken and crushed."

Before Dean can argue, Castiel slides a hand into Dean's and grins at Sam. "They’re perfect. I wouldn’t want them any other way.”

Then Castiel turns and gives Dean a look that steals his breath. “You ready?”

“Ready for what?” Sam asks curiously.

I love Jack hanging out with the Lebanon kids. I like them because the show doesn’t try too hard to make them ‘cool’ you know? Despite them being in the know about monsters. And the fact the girl let Jack shop into the store whilst it was closed but didn’t let him buy beer without ID was so refreshing, responsible teenagers on TV? Never seen it before 😂 Kinda like they did with Claire, try to hard to make her cool. And the kids wanting to adopt Jack as their friend so he can hang out with people his own age for once is so cute.

Jack is so robotic without his soul as well, like he was almost normal before he burned it off and now he’s like how Cas was when he was first introduced. And this episodes monster is the creepiest thing ever, the way they hear a whistle before getting attacked? Naaaaah mate. Love when this show is creepy though it’s so rare in the later seasons

Munich International Motor Show : Now in eco mode

The International Motor Show in Munich has begun this Tuesday. Instead of models in front of sports cars, the providers are now presenting recycled cars and bicycles. This should underpin the change in the industry - but by far not everyone likes it.

If one last proof was needed that the German auto industry really wants to do everything completely different now, then it is this, well, airy demonstration. In the coming week, the International Motor Show, better known as the IAA[1], begins in Munich. And the Association of German Automobile Manufacturers, the VDA, [2] has invited the reporters to a preview - but not by bus or in an electric car convoy, but by zeppelin.

At a height of 500 meters you will glide gently over Munich and see how what how this probably most important German trade fair has changed. The IAA no longer only takes place in exhibition halls, but also right in the middle of the old town: at Königsplatz, for example, at Odeonsplatz, at Stachus or Marienplatz and also on the A 94 autobahn where people can try out futuristic vehicles.

In the past, the bigger the better

The change of perspective is necessary. Everything used to be clear, the rule of thumb was: the bigger, the better. Business is still running according to these rules - extremely well in fact, following current sales and profit figures. But in times of lightning-fast computers, threatening climate change and overcrowded cities, the managers in Wolfsburg, Munich and Stuttgart are increasingly discussing other things, sometimes with an anxious tone: Which robot car will come from the USA tomorrow? Which new competitor is behind the corner in China? What new forms of transportation are in demand? How green do you have to get? And yes, that too: How desirable are you actually?

When the industry gathered for the last time at the IAA, in autumn 2019, already a lot of certainties for so long in the automotive world had been shaken. And the car people hardly had any answers. This is one of the reasons why the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt turned out to be quite a disaster - which is not an exaggeration - that should not be repeated.

When Chancellor Angela Merkel visited, climate activists grimly climbed some cars and held up posters: "Climate killers". The BMW employees stood around their occupied cars, perplexed. The dented roofs were the smallest problem. The managers simply didn't know how to deal with this situation, for which there is probably no good solution. Halligalli [3] was also outside the gates: demonstrators blocked the driveway with bicycles. Which, by the way, was quite right for the mayor of Frankfurt, Peter Feldmann. The SPD man - after all, actually the host - was not allowed to speak at the opening. His speech was then of course known anyway: "Frankfurt needs more buses and trains, but not more SUVs," it said. And he also thanked the demonstrators - their fight for a better climate is important.

From then on, the disturbed car people only wanted to get away from Frankfurt. Eventually they agreed on Munich. Here, too, urban society does not embrace the auto industry. But it is probably the safest big city in the world, a main argument when looking for a new venue. "Here there are cavalry squadrons and, in case of doubt, a stable police cauldron," said someone from the industry who was involved in the decision-making process some time ago. But that alone is not enough to make the trade fair a success again.

Because the car itself has lost traction. In Frankfurt there were only a good 500,000 visitors. Half as many as a few years earlier. Even in this area of life, providers and consumers have migrated to the Internet. And the avant-garde is somewhere else anyway: Google, Apple and Tesla are leaders in robot functions and electromobility - and what are the Chinese actually building with massive state support? Hardly any of this could be seen in Frankfurt.

The big trade fairs were long regarded as high masses: the car show in Geneva or Paris, the motor show in Detroit - or the IAA in Frankfurt, that was glamor in all its facets. Whoever could went there. The others at least devoured the reports and photos about horsepower cars and the scarcely clothed young women that manufacturers like Ferrari put on hoods, which they thought was creative.

It was the time when car managers secretly hung around the competition's exhibition halls, sometimes more, sometimes less, to see what their colleagues were up to. When they met in the back rooms of the pavilions to make deals and start mergers. When men like the former Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche and the long-time Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn sat on the big stage, talking about cars, marriages and all sorts of other things and the audience wondered whether what took place was more of a cabaret . Ghosn later got into trouble with the Japanese judiciary and at some point fled to Lebanon in an instrument case. Behind the big cars was often also a perfectly staged drama.

The VW family owners made the managers act like gladiators in the Coliseum

In all these years, however, nobody had encouraged the knighting of the car more than Volkswagen. On the eve of the official car show openings, the Wolfsburg always invited people to a large hall, in Frankfurt, in Paris, in Geneva, regardless of the main thing: big. When every brand boss then presented his latest models in front of the big players, the music came off the tape at discotheque volume, when the bosses of Porsche, Audi and Skoda bowed to the powerful, the family owners Wolfgang Porsche and above all Ferdinand Piëch, then this copied Roman Coliseum-style events: Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant.

It was loud on those evenings in the VW Coliseum, very loud. Sometimes the Pet Shop Boys performed, sometimes the French film diva Catherine Deneuve, sometimes rope artists and dancers. Each act was kind of out of place in its own way. But these evenings weren't about the total work of art being convincing. The names were important. The celebrities. And the volume. When the twelve cylinders of the Lamborghini Aventador also cracked to the pounding techno music, to light shows and artificial fog, then you wondered how - for example - Mr Piëch, who was already older at the time, could stand it. Mostly he sat there, stoic, immobile, absent.

As soon as the show was over and the gladiators bowed to him, the emperor stood up and left the stands. Walked slowly down the stairs into the arena. Pretended to be inspecting cars, but the truth was he wanted to speak to the people, and so he did. Often only a few minutes, but that provided a topic of conversation for days. For example, when he said between half sentences that he would like to buy the Fiat subsidiary Alfa Romeo. Just like that, maybe also to drive the then Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne to white heat. Incidentally, the latter took revenge a few years later. When the Germans sank into the diesel scandal and Fiat was accused of having also manipulated diesel engines, the Italian said: "Anyone who compares us with the German company has smoked something illegal."

Perhaps the diesel scandal was the beginning of the end of the big trade fairs, in any case it accelerated change. As a result of the crisis, the evitably oversized cars were trimmed down to normal. At the same time, new competitors with new technologies pushed into the industry. Then Piëch and his top managers disappeared from the scene. And the new managers also break the existing professional rules. At the IAA 2019 VW boss Herbert Diess tried out the embrace technique with the demonstrators, he went almost completely out to the people, discussed with an activist of the "Sand im Getriebe"[4] initiative. That was a bit obnoxious on his part, but at least he had tried it.

Nowadays even in Munich, they want to appear more modern here and everything should run more smoothly, the industry hopes. And other content has been agreed. And BMW wants to talk about the circular economy in its "Joytopia": How can mobility function in a resource-saving and low-CO₂ manner? The company wants to present the "i Vision Circular", a vision vehicle that consists of almost 100 percent recycled material - and is designed in such a way that it can be easily recycled. VW, in turn, would like to introduce the "New Auto", the robot driven car of the day after tomorrow. "Mobility is a basic human need - and fulfilling it in all its facets is an ever greater challenge for our society, which business and politics have to face," says VDA President Hildegard Müller and is certain that the "new IAA " will show ways how these mobility tasks can be combined:" efficiently, economically, socially and ecologically ".

It should be possible to experience it in the literal sense of the word, which is why the IAA no longer takes place in noisy, stuffy exhibition halls for the most part. But outside in the squares. Because that's where the industry wants to get into conversation with critics, at least in theory - as long as they don't trample on the roofs of cars.

In fact, even VW is not represented with all brands, Peugeot, Opel, Fiat, Volvo, Honda and Toyota completely save themselves the appearance, even expensive super sports cars will not be on display, not even the US company Tesla, which will soon have a plant in Germany opened. The German competition is afraid of the Americans, but they also know that Tesla would attract people, potential customers for everyone.

Or should bigger things be negotiated after all, the transport turnaround, climate protection? It depends on who you ask. The car people are not in agreement. The IAA 2021 is a very exciting large-scale experiment in an industry that is currently having to find itself anew. And which sometimes relies on the tried and tested. On Sunday - after the Zeppelin flight - there is a VW break in the Isarpost[7]. A large hall, there is probably loud music, and of course wine and beer, Corona or not. As always. Because as exciting as everything is right now - it would be more convenient if everything stayed the same.

SOUTH CAROLINA

2021 May 13 (Thu) – We stayed home most of the day, working on caravan issues. I took an Advil last night so I could at least sleep. It helped a little but not as much as I needed.

At 4:30 p.m. Vanleigh called to ask for the tag number on the Spyder panel. We have no heat, no air, no tank readings, and the temp says it’s -426 degrees. They messed it up during the owner’s rally in Arkansas and we are having a dilly of a time getting it fixed. They are now trying to figure out what model panel we have. What a mess!

Following the phone call from Vanleigh, we drove to the park to watch Noah’s baseball game. His team is playing in the finals. Tonight’s game did not go well. They play again next week. After the game, we took Noah to WalMart to get him a birthday present. His birthday is next month on June 18. We won’t be here for his party. He chose a Lego game with Mario (is that character still around?). It is somehow connected to a video game. I don’t understand it all but he was very happy with it. We bid everyone goodbye and came home to prepare for tomorrow’s move. The fridge smells worse than ever.

2021 May 12 (Wed) – We continued working on caravan issues. Adjustments had to be made on the Corning Glass Museum tour and some prices have gone up since we quoted costs last year. The Museum of Play is going through renovations and the diner is closed. We are making adjustments as needed.

I was so sick today. I have a sore throat, runny nose, and sinus headache big enough to choke an elephant. I am not supposed to take any Advil, Motrin, or Excedrin because of the chemo I am on. It could cause a bleeding episode.

Something has gone bad in the refrigerator. We have searched high and low but can’t find it. Every time you open the door, the most awful smell wafts out into the air.

2021 May 11 (Tue) – We went over to Trap’s for dinner. He has the bug, too.

We spent the day working on caravan “stuff.” I called all the restaurants and venues to confirm (1) that the caravan is still on, and (2) to check that they are still in business. We had some changes, but for the most part, a good deal of our planned activities will take place. The Lake Placid Olympics Museum is closed for renovations until 2022. That’s disappointing.

2021 May 10 (Mon) – We took Sam to Home Depot to buy fencing for the new house. They did not have everything they wanted. Construction is going like crazy right now and as soon as materials come in, they sell out. Sam put in an order for the posts and sheets. We used my military discount to get 10% off the total cost.

After we got home, Sam checked with Lowe’s and found they had the materials on hand. So, she cancelled the Home Depot order and we ran to Lowe’s to pick up ten posts, ten bags of cement, and eight 2x4’s. They did not have any doors in stock. The rest of the order is going to be delivered. We then dropped the material off at the new house. While we were there, the delivery truck arrived from Home Depot with their new refrigerator. That was great timing!

We stopped at home to feed the animals, then went to watch Hudson play soccer and Noah play baseball. It was a long day. To kick it off, it looks like I have caught the kids’ virus. They’ve all had runny noses since we arrived. Now I have it!

2021 May 9 (Sun) – Hudson had a soccer game this morning. Afterward, we all went to Paris Mountain State Park for a hike in the woods today. It reminded us of upstate New York when we used to camp and hike there with the kids.

2021 May 8 (Sat) – Paul and Travis went to the new house to put in the floors upstairs in the boys’ bedrooms. I stayed at the house with Sam and the boys. Noah had a baseball game.

2021 May 7 (Fri) – We drove to Sam’s house today to help her load up some items to bring to their new house. They bought a house in Taylors although their rent for the house in Simpsonville doesn’t expire until August. That gives them some time to get things done before moving in. The traffic was very heavy and it took us about 40 minutes to get there when it should have taken 20.

The new house has a very steep driveway. It is in a cul-de-sac and on a hill. The deck in the back of the house is 3 stories high! The crawlspace has a ceiling height of about 26’. It is unfinished and gets a lot of water in there. The house itself is very modern and updated. There are 2 bedrooms and a bath upstairs and 2 bedrooms, a great room, a bath, a laundry/mud room, and large kitchen with nook area. It was built in 2014 and is in a pretty new development. There are new developments going up all over the place around here. The rate of construction is mind boggling. I wonder what it’s doing to the infrastructure. It’s like what was happening to Las Vegas a few years ago.

After we dropped off the items to the new house, we went to lunch at Denny’s. Hudson had school today but Noah had a virtual class. So Noah, Lincoln, Sam and us went to lunch. The service was very slow (typical for this area). They went home and we returned to the campground to feed the animals and walk Bonnie. I even got in a quick nap!

At 5 p.m. we went back to the new house to help Travis do some work. He was there with a co-worker. They were ripping up the carpet in the upstairs bedrooms. Paul and Travis walked around the house and consulted on things that needed to be done. I played with the boys until it was time to go. Sam had left earlier with Lincoln because he kept getting in the way. Since Travis had the work truck, he couldn’t fit the boys. So we drove the boys back to their house then returned to our trailer.

2021 May 6 (Thu) – We drove into Greer to look around and pick up pet food. Then we stopped at La Reata for lunch. It was a Mexican restaurant with good food. The margaritas were delicious.

After a quick stop at home, we went to the BMX Zentrum to take a one-hour tour of the factory. It is the only BMW production plant in the United States. The entire plant was very clean and bright. We saw robots and people putting parts together to produce cars. It was interesting but not as good as the Mercedes tour we took a few years ago.

Another quick stop back at the trailer, then we were off to see the grandsons. They are growing like weeds (as expected). They appear to be very happy down here in South Carolina. The schools reopened and they started going back into the classroom last week. Sam cooked dinner then we all took off for the ball field where Noah had a baseball game. Greg and Sharon were also there. Noah did very well and after the game, the coach gave him the game ball for his outstanding playing. Everyone was delighted!

Then it was a drive to Bruster’s to celebrate with ice cream for everyone. We didn’t get home until after 8 p.m. The poor animals! They usually eat between 4 and 4:30. And Bonnie needed to go out immediately.

2021 May 5 (Wed) – We packed up in a light rain and left Lebanon, TN at 10 a.m. There was rain on and off during our more than 4 hour drive to Greer, SC. We are here to spend 10 days with Travis and his family.

The campground is nice. The sites are a little close together. We have FHU with a back-in site. There is an upper and a lower level to the campground and we are located on the lower level. There’s a large dog park for Bonnie to run in and some trails in the area.

As we were driving into the area, we spotted a BMW factory. After we got set up, I checked the internet and found the factory offers tours. I promptly ordered two tickets for a factory tour tomorrow. Not only did they send an email to confirm our reservation, an agent called to go over the rules – no open shoes, arrive 30 minutes early, and bring a mask. I guess too many people ignore the rules outlined in the email so that they have to call and repeat them.

Theory of Semiotics

The numerous signs and symbols surrounding us affect our daily lives more than we know. These signals, which are present anywhere we go, are unconsciously interpreted as we encounter them in particular places.

For instance, we are aware of what the ‘thumbs up’ implies—that is, ‘yes’, ‘okay’, or ‘approved’. Whereas, we automatically know how to comprehed the ‘thumbs down’ without thinking. This is because of a concept called “unconscious cultural knowledge”, or our cognizance on established practices and symbols depending on the culture we are familiarized with.

Similarly, when buying products, such as smartphones, we are able to distinguish the different logos and brands of smartphones. Upon seeing the half-eaten apple at the back of a device, we immediately know it’s an iPhone/iOS product. Whereas, when we see the robot-like figure appearing on a phone screen as we turn it on, we instantly know it’s an Android phone.

There are also lots of cultural differences which semiotics tackle. For example, in most countries, nodding your head indicates ‘yes’. However, in countries like Bulgaria, Greece, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, and Egypt—nodding your head means ‘no’, and shaking your head means ‘yes’.

In other words, we need to understand the context in which a sign is communicated in order to comprehend its real meaning, and hence act appropriately. What is going on around the sign is usually as important for us to know as the sign itself in order to interpret its meaning.

Furthermore, signs are not only applied to visual things, it can also be heard—such as an approaching police vehicle, where the siren is first heard before the car is seen.

These examples alone show how important the study of symbols are, and how us individuals are unconsciously influenced by these signals in our everyday lives. Our automatic thoughts and actions are often controlled by cultural meanings and conventions, and therefore dependent upon our ability to interpret them instinctively.

They stop in Salina on their way home from Eureka Springs. It’s still too far from the bunker to bother picking up groceries. Ice cream would be a lost cause by the time they got it into a freezer, but for the sheer sake of variety some of the big box stores in Salina offers both novelty and a conveniently timed pit stop in the seven hour drive home. The traumatic loss of and subsequent regaining of his memories over the last couple of days has left Dean feeling a little too shaky to drive straight through.

Not to mention he really needs to get a new phone. It sucks to keep borrowing Sam’s just to check in with Cas, who insisted on regular updates once Dean had finally told him what had happened. Just in case he suffered a relapse, or any other side effects of being both cursed and cured by witchcraft in the span of twenty-four hours. If he can’t be home already, replacing his phone feels like a good start. He hopes has hasn’t lost all the pictures on his crushed phone, the ones he hasn’t had a chance to back up on his laptop back at the bunker. He should really do that more often, he thinks. Losing his memories has given him an entirely new perspective on things like that.

Hell, the first thing he wants to do when he gets home is to just look at everything. The walls, the books, his weapons-- the light sticks. Touch it all, make sure it’s all still real. Re-absorb the evidence of his own existence. He already sent a text to Mary asking if she’d mind returning his journal. After nearly losing everything, he just wants to hold it in his hands. It’s the most tangible proof he has that he’s real, that his life is accounted for. He knows it’s waiting for him, to page through and recount the proof of his otherwise nearly invisible imprint on the planet.

But Sam spots a sign for a Japanese hibachi restaurant, and hey, that’s the kinda place normal people go to celebrate stuff, right? He talks Dean into stopping with the promise of an onion volcano, so Dean rolls his eyes and teases Sam about catching shrimp tossed by the chef into his big mouth until he comes just shy of preemptively ruining the entire experience for the both of them. Dean knows where the line is, and he congratulates himself on toeing it to perfection.

They fill up on steak and shrimp (yes, even the ones hurled at their heads by the chef), and maybe have a bit too much sake, but everything is good again. Sam had been right. It is a life-affirming meal.

Sam refuses to let Dean behind the wheel until he’s sure Dean can operate a motor vehicle safely. His standards had become a lot stricter in recent days, but Dean tries not to let it get to him. Sam’s probably right again. They leave Baby by the restaurant and wander across the parking lot to Target. They need supplies of the non-perishable sort, and it’s about their last chance to shop in a real store before they hit Lebanon. Win/win, Dean figures.

They make their way through the dollar section, Dean teasing Sam with an assortment of pink fluffy heart things just days before Valentine’s day.

“Still better than the time you tried to give me a human heart,” Sam says when Dean waves a pen topped with a sparkly pink heart in his face before dropping it back into the bin.

“So you’ll be my Valentine?” Dean teases, tossing a couple boxes of conversation heart candies into the cart.

“You shoulda tried that line on Larry,” Sam snaps back, pushing the cart off into the store.

Dean stands there for a second and then shrugs. “Larry probably would’ve appreciated the sentiment, at least.”

“Larry’s a robot, Dean.”

“Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings.”

Sam wanders into the men’s clothing department and studies the assortment of socks for sale. After a few minutes, he tosses a ten pack of white athletic socks into the cart and rolls it away. Dean had stopped, looking at the array of novelty socks and boxers, many of them with Valentine’s Day themed designs. Hearts, cupids… love stuff. Without thinking he picks up a pair of boxers covered with conversation heart candies. He doesn’t even like the damned things, but for some reason he’d already chucked a couple boxes of them in cart, and now he was gonna fucking wear them? Right up against his junk?

What the hell? Did Rowena miss something critical when she fixed my head?

Dean looks down at the words written on each of the hearts. BE MINE. SWEET HEART. ONLY YOU. HOT STUFF. I LUV HUGS.

Yeah, those candies might taste like sugar-flavored chalk, but damn, it’s not like he was gonna put them back. Right now more than ever he could really use a hug. Sam teased him for it in Heaven once, but it wasn’t a lie that he wuvs hugs. He shakes off the weird feeling of deja vu-- probably a side effect of having all his memories crammed back into his head at once-- and stomps off to stop Sam from buying any douchey ipod accessories for Baby.

An hour or so later, Dean jogs across the parking lot, his new phone in hand, to bring Baby around to the front of the store while Sam pays for all the rest of their new stuff. He’d been inordinately relieved with the guy who set up his new phone had been able to recover all the data-- photos, contacts-- from his dead phone and transfer it all to his new one. He calls Cas the second he’s outside to tell him he’s been reconnected to the grid. Cas sounds relieved, and doubly relieved when Dean tells him they’re only about an hour and a half from home.

He’s positively itching to get there now. Just seeing Baby gleaming under the sodium lights gives him a flippy feeling in his stomach. Dean gasps and Cas asks him what’s wrong, and maybe for the first time in his life, Dean means it when he replies, “Absolutely nothing.” He recognizes her. Because of course he would.

And screw Rowena for calling her stupid. He could forgive her for a lot, but that was crossing a line.

He grins to himself the rest of the way home, knowing the rest of his little family is waiting for him there. Mary. Cas. Castiel. He can remember them now, and he never wants to forget again.

He pulls into the garage just after nine. It had been a really long couple of days, and it’s so good to be home.

Mary and Cas meet them in the garage. Dean walks straight up to his mom and hugs her tight. Not only had he forgotten her, he’d also forgotten how lucky he is to have her back now after almost a lifetime without her. He’d almost lost her twice over.

She lets him go after a moment, patting his cheek. “It’s good to have you home, Dean.”

“Thanks, mom.” He smiles at her, and then sees Cas looming over her shoulder. She steps aside and Dean pulls a surprised Cas into a clenching hug.

It reminds Dean a little of their first hug after Mary had come back, only flipped around. Cas had thought he was dead, and he’d been shocked beyond belief to find Dean alive. Dean had been a little overwhelmed by Cas’s enthusiasm at the time, but now he understands it completely. He’d caught Cas off guard. Cas hadn’t expected to be practically tackled to the floor.

“Hello, Dean,” Cas says, slowly wrapping his arms around Dean.

“Hey, Cas. Fuck, it’s a relief to see you, buddy.”

He barely whispers the words into Cas’s ear and feels Cas’s arms tighten around him. Cas sighs, and Dean feels the tension wash out of his shoulders. It’s… nice, Dean thinks. He was right, a hug is exactly what he’d needed.

Sam pops Baby’s trunk and the groan of her hinges reminds Dean that he and Cas have probably been hugging longer than propriety dictates. He clears his throat and lets his hand brush down Cas’s sleeve before stepping back.

“Wanna grab a couple bags? We got some of that tea you like.”

Cas smiles and nods, and follows Dean to the trunk. Sam had divided all the shopping bags into three tidy piles, separated by their respective duffel bags. Dean stuff, Sam stuff, and kitchen stuff. Mary dives right in, grabbing up most of the bags in the kitchen pile. Cas collects the rest and then offers to carry something else with his free hand. Dean passes him a bag with a couple new flannels and a pair of jeans and they all make their way inside to get everything put away where it belongs.

“Just drop it on the bed,” Dean says when Cas follows him to his room.

The bed’s already half covered with Dean’s duffel and several other shopping bags, so Cas walks around the other side and sets it down. “I’ll take the rest to the kitchen.”

Dean nods, glancing up from where he’s dumped out his duffel full of dirty laundry, some of it extra dirty from spending the night passed out in the woods. He makes a face at the state of his green jacket and dumps it in the laundry basket. Hell, he can’t believe he actually wore the filthy thing within ten feet of any sort of food.

Cas watches all of this with interest, still hesitant to just walk out of the room like Dean expected he would. Cas isn’t normally one for dilly-dallying, and it catches Dean’s attention.

“I’m relieved to see you as well, Dean,” Cas finally says when Dean looks back at him.

Dean itches to take the three steps between him and Cas and just start hugging him again, but he thinks that would probably be weird. Instead he finds himself standing there with one outstretched hand. He looks down at his own hand as if it had somehow betrayed him. He has no idea what he’d been planning to do with it, so he clenches his fist and lets it drop to his side.

“What is it you’ve told me before?” Cas asks, letting a smile spread across his face before pinching his brows together in mock seriousness. “Don’t ever do that again.”

Dean can’t help it, and he knows it’s morbid as fuck, but he laughs. “Trust me, I’ll try my damndest not to.”

He remembers looking into the mirror as his last memory of Cas slipped out of his head like a wisp of smoke, remembers trying to hold on to it while everything else drifted away. He shudders, and then feels Cas’s arms around him again, warm and solid and pulling him back from that horrifying memory.

“You seemed like you needed this,” Cas says when Dean doesn’t respond right away.

Dean forces himself to breathe normally; he’d forgotten to breathe reliving his worst nightmare. He hugs Cas back and nods against his shoulder.

“Sorry. I guess it’s gonna take a while to get over that.”

“Don’t ever apologize for that.” Cas squeezes him tighter and whispers. “I won’t let you forget again.”

Propriety be damned, Dean lets Cas hold him together for a few minutes until he can reassemble himself, ground himself in the present. He leans back and sees the mix of fear and relief and something he can’t quite put his finger on in Cas’s eyes, and tries to lighten the mood.

“Did I tell you about the bunny?”

“Bunny? What bunny?”

Dean looks down and sees the grocery bags sitting by the door and smiles up at Cas. “Go put those in the kitchen and get us a coupla beers, and I’ll tell you about it.”

Cas comes back and hands Dean a beer a few minutes later. Dean had finished sorting his laundry and moved on to ripping the tags off his new shirts. Cas looks over the blue plaid shirt Dean’s inspecting for weird stickers or plastic things that would melt into the flannel in the dryer, and then tentatively reaches out a hand to touch the soft material.

“That’s a nice shirt,” he says, and Dean looks up at him with a grin and offers it to Cas.

“You want it?”

“I have a shirt,” Cas replies.

Dean rolls his eyes and pushes the shirt into Cas’s hand. “Variety is the spice of life. Just take it. It’ll look better on you anyway. The blue brings out your eyes…”

Dammit he hadn’t meant to say that out loud. He’d been thinking too hard about all the embarrassing shit that fell out of his mouth when he hadn’t remembered what a social filter was. He’d told Rowena she had plenty of snuff, for fuck’s sake. He’d called her hair bouncy. After that, commenting on Cas’s eyes seems pretty damn tame, especially considering the surprised pleasure his words bring to those sad blue eyes. He locks down his social filter before he can say anything about sparkling or twinkling or… or worse. But Cas is smiling, and that’s always a good thing in Dean’s book.

“Thank you, Dean.”

“You’re welcome,” he replies gruffly despite the smile he can feel tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Are you going to tell me about the bunny now?” Cas asks, draping his new shirt over his arm and taking a sip of his beer.

Dean glances over at the bags of stuff he still has to sort through and waves a hand at the far side of the bed. “Sit down, this is probably gonna take a while.”

Cas gets himself situated on the bed, leaning back against the headboard with one foot still firmly planted on the floor and his new shirt draped across his lap, while Dean tells the story of how he woke up in the woods with a fluffy friend. It leads into a slightly muddled tale of the rest of the weird shit that happened on their last hunt, ending with his epic ride on Larry the bull.

“It sounds like I missed out on an exciting week,” Cas says eventually, when Dean’s down to unpacking the last bag.

It’s nothing but Valentine’s candy and the ridiculous boxers he still can’t fully believe he actually bought for himself. The bed’s otherwise clear, finally, so he sits down beside Cas and pulls the bag up into his lap. He rummages around for something to snack on and comes up with one of the tiny boxes of paste-flavored conversation hearts. He tosses it to Cas.

“What’s this?” He turns the box over and squints down at the big heart-shaped label that says Sweethearts and then looks up at Dean for an explanation.

That’s when Dean realizes he doesn’t really have one. “I don’t know. It’s almost Valentine’s day. I think there’s a law you gotta buy a box of those once a year.”

Cas doesn’t look satisfied by that explanation, but he sets his beer down on the nightstand and opens the box to investigate. He picks out a candy and holds it up for inspection.

“Yes,” he reads out, and then looks to Dean again for an explanation. “Yes what?”

Dean can feel his face heating up. Why had he done this again? Some sort of self-flagellation? Shit, he’d been through enough personal torture this week already. Cas gives up on waiting for an answer and puts the candy in his mouth and chews it up with a look of intense concentration, like he’s trying to rearrange all the molecules into the correct configuration to analyze the flavor.

“These don’t taste very good, Dean,” he says, picking another heart out of the box and reading out the message printed on it. “Love me.”

Dean gulps down the immediate impulse to blurt out I already do, and watches Cas pop the candy in his mouth. He stares dumbstruck as Cas makes a face but shakes another tiny heart out into his hand.

“Angel,” Cas reads, and then turns to Dean with a raised eyebrow. “I assume this one won’t taste any better than the other two.

And Dean’s newly reestablished filter cracks under the strain of holding back. “I bet it does.”

Cas’s other eyebrow shoots up level with the first one, and he stares at Dean. Dean just reaches over and plucks the box from Cas’s hands. He digs through the bag for something better.

“Here. Chocolate. You’ll probably like these. They don’t taste like chalk.”

They’re still wrapped in pink foil and covered with hearts, but hey, they were half price. He shakes a few candies out of the bag and hands them to Cas, and absently unwraps a piece of chocolate for himself while watching Cas’s careful fingers tease the foil off one of the chocolates, smoothing the wrinkles from it as he goes. Dean chews up the chocolate, letting the gooey caramel center squish across his tongue, but Cas sits frozen just staring at the wrapper in his hand with his candy half-raised toward his mouth.

“Do all Valentine’s Day candies convey romantic sentiments?”

“Wha’s that?” Dean asks, leaning over to see what Cas is looking at. The inside of the foil wrapper is printed with a message.

“You’re cute,” Dean reads out, and then grins. “Hey, Cas! Your candy’s hitting on you.”

“You’re the one who read it out,” Cas replies, squinting at Dean. He raises his unwrapped chocolate to his mouth, but stops to point out the crumpled wrapper in Dean’s hand. “What does yours say?”

Dean looks at it and debates whether or not to just wad it up and pretend it doesn’t say anything, but he sighs and flattens it out enough to see the words inside. It’s just a silly game. It doesn’t mean anything. He can play along.

“You melt me.”

Cas puzzles at that for a second, and then nods in understanding. “Because it’s chocolate, and chocolate melts at body temperature. That is amusing.”

Dean tries not to choke at Cas’s interpretation of the sentiment, but goes ahead and starts unwrapping another one. Cas crams the whole chocolate in his mouth and bites down with a pleased hum. “You were right. That’s far more pleasing than the chalk candy.”

“Yeah, we’ll use the other ones to draw summoning sigils or something.” He dumps out the rest of the chocolates on the bed between them and drops the bag to the floor. He’s found something Cas likes to eat; hell yeah they’re gonna eat ‘em all.

“Hug me,” Cas says when he’s unwrapped his next candy.

“Huh,” Dean replies, holding up his wrapper for Cas to see. “Same here. Hug me.”

“Do you think it’s a command?”

Dean shrugs. “Dunno. Might be bad luck not to.”

Cas leans across the small pile of chocolates and wraps an arm around Dean’s shoulders. They lean awkwardly into each other for a few moments, and then break apart to tear into more of the candies.

“Sweet on you,” Dean says, and Cas replies, “You make me happy.”

Dean can’t help it. It’s probably just the sugar rush. He can blame it on a caramel overdose. Plus chocolate’s supposed to trick your brain into feeling pleasure or something, right? He grins and replies, “Aw, Cas, you make me happy too.”

“You didn’t read that in a wrapper, Dean,” Cas admonishes.

Dean shakes his head, looking Cas in the eye. “Don’t need a candy wrapper to tell me that.”

Cas turns as pink as the scraps of foil littering the space between them, but he’s smiling even broader now. Dean knows better than to try and pass it off as a sugar rush this time. They both reach for another candy without looking away from one another, rushing to be the first to get theirs unwrapped and read out their next confessions, because they’re both on the same page now.

“Be mine,” Cas reads out triumphantly, handing the wrapper to Dean.

“I’ve been yours since you collected me from the pit, Cas. Didn’t you call dibs or some shit?”

“I didn’t call dibs on your soul, Dean,” Cas replies, slightly scandalized and slightly overwhelmed at Dean’s confession. “I battled through countless ranks of the damned to reach you first. I didn’t need to call dibs.”

Dean grins. “So you won me fair and square. Impressive.”

Cas rolls his eyes and pops the chocolate into his mouth, pointing at Dean’s still wrapped piece.

“Fine,” Dean says, rolling his eyes and unwrapping the candy.

His heart heaves a mighty thud and then sets to racing when he reads the message printed inside. It’s just two words. He should be able to say them. Cas gets that this isn’t really a game anymore. At least, Dean hopes Cas gets it.

“Love you.”

It comes out a little hoarser than he’d intended, and he’s not entirely sure Cas answers at first because he’s too busy wondering if it’s possible to stare a hole through a piece of pink foil. He squeezes his eyes shut for a second, clears his throat, and then slowly raises his eyes to Cas’s face. Cas looks stunned, like he’s not sure he heard correctly, or if he’s not sure that Dean would ever have said those words if it weren’t part of some silly game. But he looks so damn hopeful that they’re true. So Dean repeats them.

“Love you, Cas. I really do.”

And that’s it, Dean thinks. Cas knows all his secrets now. Every last one. If anything ever happens to him again, he’d never truly be gone. Cas has the complete backup version. He’d thought it should terrify him, to lay himself bare like this, but Dean finds it strangely soothing, to be emptied out of all his long-buried feelings.

Cas just nods for a few seconds. “I love you too, Dean.”

“Does one of these say kiss me?” Dean asks, scooping up the rest of the chocolates.

Cas takes them from his hands and tosses them to the floor. “I don’t need candy to give me commands.”

So Dean leans in and kisses him anyway.

The next morning Cas wears his new shirt to breakfast. Dean beams when Mary tells him it suits him, that it brings out his eyes. Cas smiles over at Dean, and Dean grins back, wrapping an arm around Cas’s waist. He doesn’t need a candy wrapper to tell him to. Then again, he also knows Cas stole his goofy heart-covered boxers, and somewhere over Cas’s hip where Dean’s hand is resting, his fingers press all the most important words into Cas’s skin, angel, all mine, true love, forever.

There’s no way either of them will forget again.

Migrant workers are deprived of basic human rights

Nine Nigerian women are currently sleeping on the streets of Beirut, Lebanon, after they were laid off as domestic workers during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The women had approached the Nigerian Embassy for help but were turned down, according to a Middle East Eye report on June 23. Nigeria’s ambassador to Lebanon, Goni Modu, reportedly told the women to “go back to their masters” while they await evacuation. Lebanon is currently undergoing a stringent financial crisis exacerbated by the pandemic which has led to increased job loss. However, these nine domestic workers don’t hold normal jobs. African domestic workers in the Gulf and Arab countries are essentially domestic slaves — and the labour laws in these countries perpetuate the exploitation and abuse.

In April, Temitope Olamide Ariowolo, 31, a Nigerian woman, was advertised for sale at $1,000 United States dollars on Facebook by Wael Jerro, a Lebanese man. Jerro posted Ariowolo’s international passport on the Facebook group, “Buy and Sell in Lebanon,” according to screenshots obtained by Middle East Eye before the post was deleted.

But Ariowolo refused to return to Nigeria even after the intervention of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) offered to evacuate her. Abike Dabiri, head of NIDCOM, stated that 69 abused domestic workers were evacuated back to Nigeria.

Early this month, the Lebanese Embassy in Nigeria suspended domestic work visas to “address rights, abuses and violations” of Nigerian household staff in Lebanon. But this abuse of household workers is not exclusive to Lebanon, — it is rampant throughout the Gulf region.

In August 2018, two Nigerian migrant domestic staff were killed in Riyadh by their Saudi Arabian hosts. Young girls are usually recruited as housekeepers by registered agencies in Nigeria. Nigeria’s Daily Trust newspapers revealed that contract stipulates that within the first 24-months, the servants “must not ask for a salary increment, stop work or runaway, or refuse to work or finish the contract, even for one day.”

The Kafala system and migrant labour

The Kafala sponsorship system allows a migrant to work in Gulf and Arab countries by tying their immigration status to their employer. The conditions are slave-like because the migrant worker typically gives up most of their rights in exchange for a contract, allowing for abuse with impunity. Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, and Lebanon, all actively participate in this system that provides temporary, cheap labour during economic prosperity and equally discarded during less affluent periods, according to the International Labour Organization:

The migrant worker cannot enter the country, transfer employment nor leave the country for any reason without first obtaining explicit written permission from the kafeel [employer]. The worker must be sponsored by a kafeel in order to enter the destination country and remains tied to this kafeel throughout their stay. The kafeel must report to the immigration authorities if the migrant worker leaves their employment and must ensure the worker leaves the country after the contract ends, including paying for the flight home. Often the kafeel exerts further control over the migrant worker by confiscating their passport and travel documents, despite legislation in some destination countries that declares this practice illegal.

This system, which requires the absolute dependence of the worker on their employer, is an obvious example of modern-day slavery. It promotes the abuse of migrant workers. For instance, this Tanzanian woman was forced to work “like a robot” without rest or days-off in Oman for three years. Her employer constantly reminded her: “I bought you for 1,560 rials ($4,052 USD) from Dubai. Give it back to me and then you can go,” whenever she asked for food or improved working conditions. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfKWr65siHY] Consequently, migrant workers have two grim options: Put up with the exploitative conditions or escape. But those who escape are not entitled to compensation. In fact, they “can be fined, indefinitely detained and deported,” asserts Migrant Rights, an advocacy organization. It does not stop there — migrants abandoned by their sponsors can “be stranded for years” since they cannot afford the cost of a return flight ticket to their respective countries.” There is no doubt that the sponsorship kafala labour laws perpetuate the exploitation of African domestic workers. However, African states are also often complicit. Ethiopian journalist Zecharias Zelalem revealed that in 2007, the Ethiopian government hired a US-based public relations firm that lobbied US Congress to “quash a bill condemning Ethiopia’s human rights record.” To pay the PR firm, they misappropriated over $600,000 USD from its consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The embezzled funds had actually been raised by Ethiopians in Diaspora to rescue “Ethiopian domestic workers languishing in Lebanon,” Zelalem learned. The case was discussed on Twitter:

In many African nations including Nigeria, policy confusion, weak regulatory laws and enforcement — compounded by victims’ desperation to migrate to greener pastures abroad — has fueled this human trafficking disguised as domestic work.

The Kafala system directly contravenes ILO's International Labour Standards that promote “decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and dignity.” Sadly, since the adoption of ILO's Decent Work for Domestic Workers Convention C187 in 2011, only 29 countries have ratified it. On the other hand, Gulf and Arab countries like Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Lebanon — and their African counterparts like Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania — are yet to ratify and domesticate this law. The redress of a bitter history of exclusion and injustice to migrant domestic workers may seem far-fetched. But Myrtle Witbooi, president of the International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) is optimistic: “One day, we will all be free,” she said.
