A Complete Blood Count (CBC) test is one of the most common and essential blood tests in modern medicine. But what exactly is it, and why is it so crucial for your health? Let’s dive in and explore everything you need to know about the CBC test.
What is a CBC Test?
A CBC test is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates the components of your blood. It measures several aspects of your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. This test provides valuable insights into your overall health and helps detect a variety of conditions.
Why is a CBC Test Important?
The CBC test is a cornerstone in diagnosing and monitoring many health conditions. Whether it’s identifying an infection, checking for anemia, or monitoring a chronic disease, the CBC test is indispensable. It’s like a snapshot of your health, giving doctors crucial data to make informed decisions.
Components of a CBC Test
Red Blood Cell (RBC) Count
Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. The RBC count measures how many red blood cells you have in your blood.
White Blood Cell (WBC) Count
White blood cells are essential for fighting infections. The WBC count tells you how many white blood cells are in your blood, and can indicate the presence of infections or immune system disorders.

Hemoglobin Levels
Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The hemoglobin level indicates how well your blood can carry oxygen throughout your body.
Hematocrit Levels
Hematocrit measures the proportion of red blood cells in your blood. It’s a good indicator of your blood’s ability to carry oxygen.
Platelet Count
Platelets help your blood clot and stop bleeding. The platelet count measures how many platelets are in your blood, which is vital for assessing clotting function.
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
Tumblr media
Role and Function
Red blood cells transport oxygen from your lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation.
Normal Range and What High/Low Counts Indicate
A normal RBC count varies with age and sex but generally ranges from about 4.7 to 6.1 million cells per microliter for men and 4.2 to 5.4 million cells per microliter for women. High counts can indicate dehydration or heart disease, while low counts can suggest anemia or blood loss.

3-PART CELL COUNTER, THE BLOOD TESTING MACHINE FOR YOUR COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT(CBC)
Hematology analyzer is the blood testing machine used to perform a complete blood count (CBC) or hemogram. It performs quantitative analysis of your blood elements such as red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (leukocytes) & platelets (thrombocytes). This is also known as Automated Blood Cell Counter or differential cell counter.
Manual blood cell counting was a tedious process which required highly skilled human resources with a high TAT which takes more than 30 minutes for one complete CBC.
The blood testing machine automatically counts the blood cells from the given sample of blood & displays the count as results. Cell counter can be of two types: 3-part differential counter & 5-part differential counter. The traditional method for counting cells is electrical impedance, also known as the Coulter Principle. It is used in almost every Hematology analyzer. In automated cell counters, the cells are suspended in a conductive medium and when the cell passes through a small aperture the impedance changes. The change in impedance is proportional to cell volume, resulting in a cell count and measure of volume. In a 3-part analyzer the cell counting is based on the Coulter Principle.
In 5-part analyzer, along with coulter principle for absolute counts, a flow cytometer is used for WBC differential. count.  Although 3-part hematology analyzers provide sufficient information for most clinical settings, trends show an increased interest in 5-part instruments. While 5-part hematology analyzers offer improved assessment of white blood cells, 3-part instruments offer greater cost benefits.
Normal value are RBCs: 4.5 million to 5.9 million cells/mcL for men; 4.1 million to 5.1 million cells/mcL for women. Hemoglobin: 14 to 17.5 gm/dL for men; 12.3 to 15.3 gm/dL for women. Haematocrit: 41.5% to 50.4% for men; 35.9% to 44.6% for women. Mean corpuscular volume: 80 to 96.
One of the most common hematology tests is the complete blood count (CBC), routinely conducted in any investigation to detect anemia, clotting problems, blood cancers & other infections.
TAILPIECE: Agappe, your best partner in diagnostics, serves you with compact 3-part Hematology analyzer (Mispa CountX - 3-part differential Cell Counter) with affordable cost per test. Mispa CountX is the first & the only indigenously developed & manufactured Cell counter available in India, developed in technical collaboration with L&T Ltd.

OJI Blog #2 | Day 2 of 9
The photo above shows what your blood would probably look like under a microscope.
Today, February 13, 2018, is our second day of work immersion. The best way to describe this day? Well the right word is, 'challenging'.
I was excited the other day upon knowing that we will be able to perform CBC (complete blood count) testing by finger pricking but at the same time nervous because I already have several experiences that whenever I see blood I get dizzy and worst...faint. Unconsciously, I have a fear of blood I guess?
So here it comes, as expected when I was pricked I slowly got dizzy. It was really embarrassing, but I challenged myself that I should overcome this fear and would not let it hinder my goals. Fortunately I was able to perform well when it was my turn.
We've learned the process on how to examine a blood sample. The part which I enjoyed the most was determining and counting the amount of 'seg.' and 'lymph.' you'll see in each field. Aside from that we are also taught by our Manang Justine, one of the Medical Technologist inside the laboratory how to perform urinalysis.
Though I have weaknesses, this wouldn't stop me from being a doctor. Let's go! As they say, "malayo yan sa bituka".
