A Smart Guide to Primers: What to Use and Why

Perfect base makeup often involves a consistent skin tone and smooth finish. Layered between your moisturiser and foundation, primer is designed to do this by ‘filling in’ your skin’s pores to reduce the build up of oil and to create a more even surface on which foundation can sit. Primers are also frequented for their ability to ‘lock’ foundation in place, so you’re less likely to experience transfer throughout the day. You’ll notice they can come with other perks, such as a tint to mask discolouration, illuminating particles for a lasting glow, and nutrients to simultaneously heal and protect the skin’s external and internal layers.

Carol Mackie, Senior Global Artist for MAC says that while all skin types will benefit from primer use, oilier skin types in particular “are more prone to make up wearing off more quickly so a primer will prolong the wear of foundation.” The same goes for hotter climates, where primers are key to ensuring your foundation won’t slide with sweat.

TIP: Ensure sunscreen is applied underneath your primer and thoroughly absorbed – safety first!

Consider primer application prior to your foundation much like stretching ahead of a jog – skipping step one usually means problems for step two. Wearing a primer will allow your foundation to work to its full potential, however choosing any primer off the shelf could be remiss. When cooking, mixing oil with water simply doesn’t work. The liquids are different in build and remain separate even when spun together. The same principle can be seen for oil and water-based cosmetics. While hard to measure definitively, your safest bet is to marry like-for-like base products for the most even, long-lasting foundation finish.

TIP: Primer needn’t be applied across the whole face, says Mackie. For those with combination skin types, best apply primer along the oiliest areas of the face only, avoiding dry spots where primer isn’t necessary.

Make Up For Ever boasts a range of primers that can be layered, depending on your desired end result. The brand’s Makeup For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer is numbered one of eleven in this range, and is best worn alone as it doesn’t contain silicones. Instead, it contains silica that is a naturally occurring property that, like its synthetic sister silicone, is able to absorb moisture.

Other primer products that fit this bill include Too Faced’s Hangover Primer a lightweight primer that feels divine on the skin, MAC’s Prep + Prime Natural Radiance that contains illuminating vitamins E and C, and cruelty-free brand BECCA’s First Light Priming Filter. For a totally silicone and toxin-free option, try little-known brand Vapour Organic Beauty’s Status Soft Focus Skin Perfecting Primer, which is ideal for those keen on exploring an all-natural, water-based solution.

TIP: “Apply with a brush rather than your fingertips to avoid any natural oils in your fingers, and the brush will allow primer to glide on evenly!” Mackie suggests.

The same is often said for silicone-based products that act similarly to oils in that they are both stagnant. In other words, silicones and oils alike won’t penetrate the skin like water, but rather rest in our pores to create an even slate on which a foundation can sit and latch onto. These products work best for those with mature skin because such additives provide an exceptionally plump finish younger skins don’t need. Dimethicone, for example, is commonly used and acts as a conditioning solution for the skin, delivering a velvety, smooth finish while retaining water.

For the perfect everyday primer which hydrates the skin, helps foundation glide on smoothly, and increases wear (and works with a variety of different foundation formulas) you can’t go past Marc Jacobs’ Beauty Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. Its smooth, lightweight, water-based formula works for all skintypes and won’t aggravate sensitive skin.

Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation Primer and BareMinerals’ Prime Time Original Foundation Primer are transparent gels that glide on and leave an invisible, powdery-matte veil. La Mer’s The Hydrating Illuminator does a beautiful job at delivering to its name. Work it overtime as a cream highlighter on top of your foundation, too. Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is a fantastic all-rounder primer that truly doesn’t budge and will fill you with confidence on a night out of dancing, it’s especially great for ultra oily skin!

Sisley has an exceptional track record of delivering effective skin and makeup products. The verdict is no different when it comes to their Sisley Instant Correct Color Correcting Primer. As one of two shades available, Just Lavender offsets dull pale skin and red undertones, while simultaneously softening fine lines. For a fraction of the cost, Rimmel’s Insta CC Primers are also worth a try and like Sisley’s, its liquid is creamy and blendable, unlike the thick, pigmented colour-correctors we’ve trialed in the past.

Napoleon Perdis’ Auto Pilot Brightening Skin Primer, housed in a distinguishable pink tube, is also a decent all-rounder that soaks into skin leaving a dewy, hydrated playing field on which to apply your foundation of choice. We found it worked well under a variety of foundation types. If a two-in-one primer-foundation product excites you, have a go of Dermalogica’s Skinperfect Primer SPF 30. It’s been a beauty cabinet staple for years, and works wonders on minimal make-up days. You’ll reap the benefits of a broad-spectrum protectant, long-lasting tint, and airbrushed finish in one.

TIP: Post-application, allow your primer to sit and soak into the skin before adding your foundation; a good 60 seconds should do the trick.

Which Foundation Or CC Cream Is Best For Oily Skin?

Every skin type can be categorized into three forms – oily, dry, and normal. Though people who have normal skin don’t need much effort, those who have oily or dry skin have to go the extra mile to maintain optimum skin moisture.

Every woman dreams of having a porcelain skin, but we all know that it’s not an easy task. There are also several options which can help to conceal imperfections and can help you to give a bright, even complexion.

Instead of using separate color correcting concealer and foundation, you can easily take care of color correcting and coverage needs with just one product. Good morning dolls and Happy 2020! I hope you had fun last night. I wasn’t feeling to good so we stayed in and watched movies. I’m still trying to perfect the cut crease so I decided to try my hand at it again today.

So lets get into it….

BASE: I primed today using Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer ($32 at Ulta or on the Tarte website). I color corrected using Tarte CC Undereye Corrector ($25 at Ulta, Sephora, or the Tarte website) in the color Light-Medium. For foundation today I chose Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($43 at Sephora or on the Makeup Forever website) in the color Y235. My concealer today is ColourPop No Filter Concealer ($6.50 on their website) in the color Medium 22. I set my full face using ColourPop No Filter Setting Powder ($9 on their website) in the color Translucent. I warmed up my face using Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer ($15.99 at Ulta) in the color Bronzer.

EYES: I primed my eyes with MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot ($22 at Ulta or MAC) in the color Soft Ocher (I also used this product to cut the crease on my mobile lid). Today I used the ELF The New Classics Eyeshadow Palette ($14 on their website). I set the primer with Creme (a bright cream matte). For my first transition color I chose Truffle (a peach toned tan matte) and as my second transition I chose Darling (an orange toned tan matte). I chose Muse (a muted plum toned deep brown matte) for my crease color. After cutting my crease I chose Beloved (a peach toned light gold shimmer) and then I used Rose Gold (a copper toned gold shimmer) over top to deepen the middle 1/3 of the mobile lid. I then buffed all the hard edges of the transition and crease with the color Charmer (a muted dusty mauve matte). On my lower lash line I chose Darling again and then I darkened the lash line with Muse and to buff the lower lash line into a drop shadow I used Charmer. I highlighted the inner corners with Glamour (a pale champagne shimmer). I did my brows using Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24 on their website) and Gimme Brow Gel ($24 on their website) in the color 4.5. I carved out my brow line with the BH Studio Pro Brow Highlighter ($5 on their website) on the matte side and set it with the color Creme again. I lined my waterline with BH Cosmetics Power Pencil ($8 on their website) in the color Beige. I chose Benefit Roller Lash Mascara ($25 on their website) in black.

CHEEKS and LIPS: My blush today is Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush ($29 at Ulta or the Tarte website) in the color Seduce (a muted rose toned coral matte). I chose to highlight the top of my cheek bones, brow bones, and Cupid’s Bow with Essence Pure Nude Highlighter ($4.49 at Ulta) in the color Be My Highlight. I also highlighted the tip and bridge of my nose and the center between my brows. I used Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder ($45 on the Beautylish website) in the color 2 Medium as my finishing powder. On my lips I used NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner ($4 at Ulta) in the color Tea 7 Cookies (a muted mid-toned pink) and filled in my lips with BH Cosmetics collaboration with It’s My Raye Raye Liquid Lipstick ($9 on their website) in the color Rosey Raye (a soft rose coral nude matte).

Final Thoughts ….

Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer: A- It’s billed as a 12-hour makeup primer that fights shine & minimizes the look of pores for a smooth, matte surface and you get 1 fluid ounce of product. This primer feels silicon primer that leaves the skin velvety smooth. I really like this primer but I hate the smell of this primer. It helps blur the pores so well that I don’t mind the smell because my skin looks flawless when I wear this primer. I have plans to repurchase this primer when I use it up.

Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation: A++ This foundation comes in 59 shades with 15 shades for deeper skin tones. It’s billed as a foundation that provides undetectable medium coverage and a blurred, skin-like finish for up to 24 hours. You get 1.01 fluid ounces of product. I keep forgetting just how much I love this foundation!! I’m in the shade Y235 Ivory Beige and it’s a spot on color match for me. This foundation melts into the skin seamlessly. 2 pumps is all I need to cover my full face and neck. It doesn’t settle into the lines or pores and it lasts all day without any touch ups. This is definitely a foundation I will keep in stock.

ColourPop No Filter Concealer: A+++ You get .14 fluid ounces of product. There are 30 shades with 10 being for each light medium, and deep skin. Every time I use this concealer I fall more and more in love with it. A little goes a long way and it just melts into the skin. It’s not a thick concealer but it’s also not too thin. It doesn’t crease and doesn’t dry down matte. It’s a very nice concealer and I will most definitely be repurchasing it.

ColourPop No Filter Setting Powder: A- You get .30 ounces of product in a sifter pot. It comes in 3 shades (translucent, banana, and translucent deep). This powder is growing on me. When I first purchased this powder it didn’t work that well for me, it wore off within 2 hours….I figured out it was that I had used too much moisturizer underneath a tinted moisturizer. The second time I tried this powder it worked better but was a tiny bit cakey…. This time it set my foundation flawlessly. It’s not such a great powder for setting the under eye because it does make the under eye look dry but it also sets the concealer perfectly so I just use a satin setting powder over top for under the eye. I really am starting to like this powder …. I will be repurchasing it once I run out.

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot: A+++ You get .17 ounces of product in this pot. It’s available in 6 colors and is billed as a long-wearing blendable cream shadow that can be worn alone or with other products. I have had this pot for a while and forgot all about it, but while watching some Youtube videos I was reminded of this product and decided to break it out and try it again. I forgot how much I like it a a shadow base. I also used it today to cut my crease and it worked so much better than my Shape Tape did to cut the crease. It cancels out all veins and discoloration on the eye lids without being tacky like when i use my Shape Tape…. a little goes a long way so I will not need to purchase this for a while, but I am definitely putting this paint pot back into rotation.

ELF The New Classics Eyeshadow Palette: A+ This palette is billed as having a luxe formula of neutral eyeshadows that is smooth, creamy, blendable, and ultra-pigmented for effortless application. I really love this palette. Every time I use this palette I forget just how pigmented this palette really is. I never have to go back into the shadows more than 1 time to get great color payout. This palette has everything you need for a natural look or a smokey look. It’s my favorite ELF buy of 2019. I am glad I purchased it.

Benefit Roller Lash Mascara: A+ I You get .3 fluid ounces of product. I have not been able to put this mascara down since the day I opened it. It really is a great mascara, it’s not going to replace my Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black but I am definitely using this mascara a ton. I’ve already ordered a back up.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush: A+++!!! I say it all the time, this is my favorite formula of blush. You get .20 ounces of product. It comes in 13 shades. There is just no way to over do your blush with this formula. The formula is firm enough that with a few taps you get enough product for your cheeks. It blends well, is never patchy, and the color lasts all day. I need more colors truly I do.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder: A++ You get .28 ounces of product. When I first purchased this powder I didn’t find anything special about it…. I’ve tried it several ways and have finally figured out the best way to wear it is as a finishing powder. After all my makeup is done I finish the look with a light dusting of this powder and my face looks perfected, flawless, and on point. Oh yea… I drank the Kool-Aid on this one and I am not even sorry about it…. I will always have this in my collection.

BH Cosmetics collaboration with It’s My Raye Raye Liquid Lipstick: B++ You gey .12 fluid ounces of product. The formula of these liquid lipsticks is nice, but they don’t dry down all the way, it remains slightly tacky… there is no transfer or smudging …. but it does remain tacky… that typically isn’t my favorite formula but the Rosey Raye color is so stinkin’ pretty that I don’t even mind …. It is long lasting and wears down evenly. It’s a shame this color is a limited edition collaboration I would love to keep it in my collection permanently.

Keeping up with tradition, I got a 3rd Birthday haul from Althea Korea this year. Since it’s their third birthday, I divided my haul into 3 parts for triple the surprise - as per featured on my Instagram 1 | 2 | 3. With that, here’s my huge K-Beauty haul - third birthday edition.

It’s Skin Power 10 Formula GF Effector Super Size (60ml) H2O

With the increased humidity in Singapore’s atmosphere, I did find my skin to be more drying than before. Thus, H2O serum it is! I got the supersize version (60ml) for SGD$15.50 instead of SGD$10 for 30ml. Double the size, half the price. It is very light and I am able to spot blue dots in the formula. It also has a sweet scent and spread across my face easily.

Moremo Facial Cream Z

This cream is perfect for those with oily skin for it not only help battle your acne and pimple, but it also mattifies your skin. It is rather thick but it still gets absorbed into your skin quickly. I’ve been using this as my day cream and it not only made my skin looks and feel smoother but my skin condition did improve. Would definitely recommend this for those who have oily skin and living in a hot and humid country like myself.

Chica Y Chico One Kill Eyeliner

I like the fine brush of the eyeliner, it helps me create the perfect killer line. However, it is not oil/sebum proof so after a few hours, it will tend to smudge.

It’s Skin Power 10 Formula Vitamin E Effector

It’s Skin Power 10 Formula Vitamin C Effector

I’ve been into using serums to boost my skin care routine. After using It’s Skin Power 10 Formula H2O serum, I decided to go ahead and order their Vitamin E and Vitamin C Effector. The Vitamin E effector is great for acne scar reduction, increase collagen production and speed up cell regeneration. Whereas the Vitamin C Effector helps to brighten one’s skin tone and minimize large pores.

I like how both of the serums are quite light and easy to apply. The Vitamin C serum does have a citrus scent to it while the Vitamin E serum has a thick emulsion scent to it. After constant usage for a few weeks, I did notice my skin become brighter than before.

XOY Bride Moist UV Cushion

Due to the success of my Carbon Dioxide Acne Scar removal session, the shade of my skin tone is now one shade lighter. That means, the need to purchase a new foundation shade. I prefer to use CC Cushion for it is not only easy to use but it helps my skin glow as well.

One of the main concern that I have with CC Cushions would be the limited shades they offer. Luckily with XOY Bride Moist UV Cushion, the shade “No.30 - suitable for those who normally use Honey Beige (No.23)”, is perfect for me.

unpa Bubi Bubi Lip Scrub

This was the free gift promotion at Althea at that time. We’re able to choose between DIY bleach, a piece of sheet mask and lip scrub. I chose this lip scrub for unlike other lip scrubs, you have to let this scrub bubble up like the bubble mask before rinsing it off.

Soroci Morning Drizzle Waterdrop Cream

This moisturizer entice me for it have a very interesting raindrop texture. Suitable to be utilised as a day moisturizer.

Innisfree Green Tea Seed Eye Cream

The search for the cure to dark eye circles and eye bags still continue. This time, I’m going to try out the Green Tea Seed Eye Cream.

Etude House Sunprise Must Daily SPF 50+/PA+++

I’m currently using this sunscreen for my body. I love how the nozzle was rather precise, allowing the quick and easy application. I also don’t feel sticky after applying. Plus, it gets absorbed into the skin quickly.

Dr Mind Apot Clear Soap

I use this to control the acne on my back. I find it works well in reducing the sebum and clearing the dirt off my body. However, it can be too drying if you are to use this on your face daily.

Nature Republic Aloe Vera 92% Soothing Gel

Although it can be drying for sensitive and dry skin, it is still Aloe Vera Gel.

Mediheal Line Friends Ampoule Mask – N. M. F. Aquaring🤗

I love collaboration products for the packaging will look so cute and irresistible. Since my friend loves Brown and Cony, this is the perfect gift for her.

Petitfee Ruby & Bulgarian Rose Eye Patch 😍

I tried the Petitfee’s Black Pearl & Gold Hydro Gel Eye Patch before and although my dark eye circle still remain, I love how it hydrated my eyes. Additionally, this eye patch is not only perfect to de-swell my eyes but it gives a wonderful rose scent as well. So far, I’m loving the effect of this mask.

Guerisson 9 Complex Lifting Cream

I’ve seen this product around for a long time and it claims to be the bestselling horse oil cream around. It helps with lifting of sagging skin, wrinkles and hydration. The perfect cream for my mother.

Justgogo Clay 2-Step Mask Soothing 1 Sheet

Since multi-masking are in, I decided to get the Justgogo 2-step mask. Apply the clay mask first, then apply the sheet mask. The clay mask help with removing impurities while the sheet mask help with nourishing the skin. A mini spa in 1 product.

It’s My Magic Sponge 💭

It’s the first time I bought an It’s My product. Thus, I am surprised at how soft the sponge felt. I didn’t have the chance to use it yet but so far, I’m liking its texture.

Daily Skin Bubble Maker 🧤

This is the first time I bought a bubble maker. To use it, just slip the soap in the middle of the netting, rub the bottom of the net against the soap bar for a few seconds and you get yourself some foam. It looks very cool!

I used the Dr Mind Apot Clear Soap with the Daily Skin Bubble Maker. It works perfectly.
