So I'm annoyed at a collage of minidiscs ending up in my timeline because I follow "diskette" but that's not important...

You know how weird the etymology of "diskette" is?

So, it's a portmanteau of "disk" and "cassette".

Disk as in "a round flat thing", and it's the American spelling, because the diskette was invented by IBM, an American company. Disk (usually spelled "disc" in commonwealth countries) comes from the Greek dískos, as in "discus", the circular thing you throw for sport.

And floppy disks are primarily a circle of magnetic material. That's actually how they were first conceived, as a flexible version of the rigid metal magnetic circles used in hard drives. But they quickly realized that it was impossible to keep them clean: fingerprints and dust stick to the surface too easily, ruining them. So they were given a vinyl (and later, plastic) jacket, so they could be safely carried around.

And thus, diskette was coined. Sometimes you'll see it etymologized as "small disk", like a disk-ette, but that's wrong: it's a portmanteau with cassette. Because cassettes were made by taking reel to reel magnetic tape and putting it in a small case, so they can be quickly and reliably loaded.

And why are cassettes called that? Well, it's French. But in French it's quite simple: it's the diminutive of "casse", which means case. It's a little case. You put the tape in a little box. It's a cassette.

So similarly, diskette was made by cassettizing "disk". You put the disk in a little case. It's a disk cassette, a diskette.

This sort of thinking also explains why they're called "floppy disks" when they've been hard plastic since 1984: it's just like how we call cassettes "tapes". They're not tape, they're a little plastic box containing tape. Tape is a thin flexible thing that you wrap around a spool, not a little plastic box. But we call them "tapes"/"a tape" as synecdoche: a part is used to represent the whole. It's a "tape", fittingly because the tape is the important part. It's the part that stores the audio, the rest is just packaging to keep it safe and reliable.

Floppy disks are similarly called such: the floppy part is the magnetic disk inside the vinyl or plastic case. We're calling the whole package by the part that actually stores the data.

And in any case, they were named as such in comparison to "hard disks": the metal or glass surfaces used by hard drives.

Anyway, three final things:

1. You ever wonder why it's Floppy Disk but optical discs? You have a DVD* disc or a CD (compact disc), not a DVD Disk or Compact Disk. I already basically explained it: floppies were invented in the US, and compact discs came from a Philips/Sony partnership: a Dutch/Japanese partnership. So they used the commonwealth spelling, thus it became a standard to refer to optical media as "discs".

2. My favorite silly floppy fact comes from this sort of thing: so the first floppies were 8", then the 5.25" model was invented, and in 1981 we got the 3.5" floppy. These are by far the three most common floppy disks, and those are their names, used nearly** universally in English.

But here's the thing: one of them is wrong.

8 inch floppy disks? They're eight inches even. 5.25 inch floppy disks? They're 5.25 inches even.

3.5" disks are actually 3.543"!

This is for the same reason why we have disk vs disc for floppy and optical media: 8" disks were invented by IBM, an American company. 5.25" disks were invented by Shugart/Wang, both American companies.

3.5" disks were invented by Sony, a Japanese company. They're not 3.5" disks... They're 90mm disks!

But it was already the standard in English that floppy disk formats get called by their size in inches, so it has always been called the 3.5" disk, because that's close enough for jazz.

3. to get back to the first point of this post: minidiscs aren't diskettes. Diskette is for disks, and minidiscs are discs. They're not flexible, they're rigid: minidiscs are actually magneto-optical discs, where there's a small plastic disc like a CD, which is read by a laser but written by a magnetic read head. Since they have to be rigid for the laser to work, they're (rigid) discs, not (flexible) disks. They are confusing, I agree: usually magnetic media is disk, while optical is disc, and disks have cases, while discs are just a plastic circle... But minidiscs are magnetic AND optical, and they're optical but inside a case. They're one of those exceptions that makes taxonomy so difficult. (they're very trans in that way, imo)

* I intentionally didn't expand out the acronym DVD, because the fun fact is about that is that DVD is not an acronym. Not anymore. It was originally supposed to be Digital Video Disc, but the later Digital Versatile Disc to better reflect the non-video uses of the disc, but apparently the official meaning of the acronym is now that it just is the name of the disc. It's a DVD: it doesn't stand for anything.

** one exception to the "universally called by their sizes in English" that I'm aware of is South Africa. For Reasons they just called the 5.25" disks "floppies", and then when 3.5" disks came around, they called them... "stiffies". Yes, this is hilarious. They know.

昨日、みんなに #藍のアンビバレントな愛 で教えてもらった「朝の過ごし方」についてだけど、あることを実践してみようと思う。

Since I got a lot of suggestions for how to spend the morning under the hashtag #Ai'sAmbivalentLove yesterday, I think I'll put a certain thing into practice.

それは朝食を摂るようにすること。朝食を大切にしてるって意見が多かったから、ボクも真似したくて。いきなり料理は難しいから手軽に食べられるグラノーラにしたよ。

That certain thing is breakfast. Many of you have said how important breakfast is, so I wanted to try it too. Whipping up some cooking out of nowhere would be too complicated, so I went with a simple granola.

今日はベーシックなグラノーラにドライイチジクをトッピングしてみた。自然な甘さとプチプチとした食感がプラスされて美味しそうでしょ？

Today, I added dried figs on top of plain granola. They enhance the natural sweetness and chewy texture. Sounds delicious, don't you think?

I just got home a little while ago and documented what Masato told me earlier. I took notes on things that were particularly memorable.

今は、レイジがくれたお茶を淹れてるところ。お茶といっても少し変わってて、全部食べられる素材でできてるみたい。素材がごろっと丸ごと入ってて面白い。

I'm brewing some tea that Reiji gave me. I say "tea," but it's actually made of and filled with entirely edible material. How interesting.

3種類のお茶から、今日は赤い花びらが特徴的なものを選んでみた。氷砂糖も入ってて、誰かさんが好きそう。綺麗なピンク色で酸味と甘さが心地良い。すごくほっとする。

Out of the three types of tea, I chose the one with the distinctive red flower petals today. It also contains sugar candy. I know someone who would like that. It also has a rich pink color and a pleasant sweet-sour flavor. It's really soothing.

ここ最近、事務所の仲間とアルバムについて話すことが多いけど、まだみんなの前ではあまり話をしてないよね？早く楽曲も聴きたいし、それにまつわる話も知りたいって思ってくれてるんじゃないかな。

I've talked a lot about my album with my colleagues at the agency, but I haven't really talked about it in front of you, have I? I bet you can't wait to hear the songs and the story behind it.

なかなかスケジュールが合わなくて、オトヤにアルバムを渡せるのは少し先になるかもって思ってたから、よかった。

Our schedules haven't been lining up, so I'm thankful.  I thought I'd have to give him my album much later.

ジャケットとボクを見比べてる。すごく顔が近いけど、何を見てるんだろう。

He's comparing me to the cover. His face is so close. What is he looking at?

目がキラキラで唇もウルウルですごい、だって。特に目がインパクト大らしい。アルバムのインタビューでもビジュアルのポイントとして「眼差し」を挙げてるから、オトヤとは気が合うのかも。

He said, "Amazing, your eyes are so sparkly and your lips are so glossy!" My eyes especially have left a lasting impression on him. In the interview for my album, I mentioned that I refined my "gaze" for the cover visual. I think Otoya and I can get along well.

インタビューを熟読してる。読みながら、質問がたくさん飛んでくる。少し難しい表現も理解しようとしてくれる姿勢が嬉しいね。

He's reading the interview intently and he keeps throwing a lot of questions my way. He also wants to understand the more difficult expressions, which delights me.

今回のソロアルバムのコンセプトは「イメージからの逸脱」。ボクの新しい一面を見せたいって思った。

The concept for this solo album is "Deviation from My Image", so I wanted to show you a new side of me.

おはよう。今日はオフだから外出するよ。少し早めに出て、散策しながらお土産を探しに行くつもり。

Good morning. Today is my day off, so I'm going out. I'm leaving a little early to look for some presents while I'm taking a walk.

プレゼントをする時って、毎回すごく悩む。相手に喜んでもらえるものを選ぶのって難しいよね。ある程度、過去の傾向から推測することはできるけど。

I struggle a lot when it comes to gifts. It's not easy to pick something the other person will like. But to some extent I can make guesses based on previously shown tendencies.

相手の趣味趣向だけじゃなくて、時と場合によっても変わるだろうし、季節も考慮する必要がある。いざお店に行っても、望む物が置いてなかったりする場合もあるしね。

Not only will it depend on the recipient's preferences and tastes, but it will also change depending on the time and occasion, not to mention the season. And even when you decide on something, sometimes it isn't in stock.

メンテナンスが終わって、心身共にリフレッシュできた。今はボクが持ってきたお土産を2人で食べてる。

I finished my maintenance and now I feel both mentally and physically refreshed. I brought snacks as a present for someone and now we're sharing them.

彼は保護者のような存在で、昔からフォローしてもらってるんだ。本当に助かってる。

He's like a guardian figure to me and has been supporting me for a long time now. He really helps me out a lot.

アルバムを渡したら、彼のデスクから一番よく見える位置に飾ってくれた。いろいろな資料に交じって、これまでのCDはもちろん、ボクの載った雑誌や出演した映像なんかも保管されてる。

When I gave him a copy of my album, he put it in the best place on his desk where it could be seen and appreciated. Of course, among various materials, he keeps my past CDs, as well as magazines and performances in which I have appeared.

彼は研究者だから記録を残すのが趣味みたいなものなんだけど、少しだけくすぐったいね。

He's a researcher, so keeping track of things is kind of like a hobby for him. It's still a little embarrassing for me though.

アルバムを聴きながら、思い出を振り返ろうと思う。そしてこれからのことについても話そうかな。

ボクはアルバムの制作過程を振り返って、アルバムに関するコメントを収録した時のことを思い出した。

Thinking back to the process of creating my album, I recalled the Commentary CD that I recorded for. 

これがコメント収録の時の様子。4つの質問に答えたよ。他のメンバーも同じ質問に答えてるはずだから、どんなことを話したのか聞いてみたいな。

Here are the questions for the CD. I answered all four of them. The other members should have answered the same questions, so I really want to know how they've answered.

今日も暑い日になりそうだから、 #藍のアンビバレントな愛 でもらっていた、暑さ対策について答えようかな。

Since today seems to be another hot day, it's the perfect opportunity to talk about methods of how to protect yourself from the heat which I've seen under the #Ai'sAmbivalentLove hashtag.

根本的なことだけど、体を冷やすのが大切だと思う。部屋にいる時はエアコンでしっかり温度管理をする。外出する時は直射日光を避けられるルートで行ったり、帽子とか快適に過ごせるアイテムも使ってるよ。

I know it's a basic aspect, but I think it's very important to keep your body heat down. When I'm in my room, I use the air conditioner for temperature management. When I'm outside, I try to avoid walking in direct sunlight. I also wear hats or use other items that help me feel comfortable in the heat.

みんなもこまめに水分補給をして、体調には気を付けてね。

Be sure to take care of your physical condition and to stay well hydrated.

I think the design is quite eye-catching because the song titles are handwritten and my signature is on the cover.

仕事終わりに、セシルとアルバムについて話してた。CD自体は家に持ち帰ってから大切に開けるらしい。

After work I talked to Cecil about my album. Apparently he wants to take the CD and open it carefully at home.

お礼にって、テラリウムをもらった。クリスタルが一緒に配置されてる。ボクのアルバムをイメージして作ってくれたみたい。瓶の中に小さな美しい世界が広がってる。

In exchange for the gift, he gave me a terrarium. It has crystals in it. Apparently he created it, inspired by my album cover. A beautiful little world unfolds inside of it.

育て方やメンテナンスの仕方も教えてくれたよ。初心者にも管理しやすいものを選んでくれたんだって。ボクも勉強してみるつもり。

Cecil taught me how to maintain and take care of it. He said he chose a beginner friendly one. I want to work hard on it.

これから、今度発売されるグッズのサンプルを一緒に開封するよ。ボクがセシルを撮影した写真が使われてるシリーズのもの。ボクたちの手書きの文字や、イラストも使用されてる。

We are now unboxing the samples for the soon to be released merchandise. It's for the series for which I took the photo of Cecil. Our handwritten messages and drawings will also be used for this.

セシルとステッカーを交換することにした。おにぎりのイラストがすごくかわいい。何とも言えない味のある表情をしてるよね。どこに貼るか考えないと。

Cecil and I exchanged our stickers with each other. The onigiri sketch looks really cute. Its expression has this indescribable charm. I'll have to think about where to put this sticker.

セシルはいつも持ち歩いてる手帳に貼るんだって。目に入る度に、ボクのことを思い出せるかららしい。ボクもこのステッカーにふさわしい特別な場所を見つけるつもり。

Cecil says he will put it on his notebook that he always carries with him. So every time he sees it, he will think of me. I'll make sure to find a special place for his sticker, too.

ボクはもう少し用事があるから、作業に戻るよ。

I still have some things to do. Time to get back to work.

リュウヤに書類を渡しに来たら、食事に誘われた。土用の丑の日だから、うなぎを食べに行くんだって。

Ryuya came to give me some documents and invited me to get something to eat. Today is the　Midsummer Day of the Ox so we're going to eat eel, he said.

季節の物を食べるのは体にいいとされているし、リュウヤのおすすめの店なら間違いないよね。こういう行事を大切にできるようになりたい。

Eating seasonal food is considered good for the body, and it certainly can't be bad if it comes from a place that Ryuya recommends. I want to learn how to cherish special traditions.

リュウヤとじっくり話せる機会はそうないから、いろいろ相談してみようと思う。明日はいつもより少し早めに会いに来るよ。じゃあね。

Since it's not often that we can take our time talking to each other, I think I'll try to use this opportunity to ask for some advice. I'll be back earlier than usual tomorrow. Until then.

I'm back. I had a wonderful time. It was a place I really wanted to check out, so I was very happy I got to go there. I felt like I was close to all of you when I was there.

オープン前のSHINING STORE 池袋を見学させてもらった。来店の記念にパネルにサイン。それから、ステッカーにメッセージを残してきたよ。どこにあるか探してみて。

I was able to inspect the SHINING STORE in Ikebukuro before it opened. I signed the board of the promotional booth to commemorate my visit and then left a message on a sticker. Go and try finding it.

グッズや展示を見たり、写真も撮らせてもらったよ。みんなと同じような体験ができて楽しかった。

I looked at the merchandise and the displays and took some pictures. I must say, I very much enjoyed sharing the same experience as everyone else

それともう1つ。アニメイト池袋本店のCDフロアにある、ボクのソロアルバムのコーナーも見せてもらった。

One more thing. They showed me the corner for my album on the CD floor of the Ikebukuro Animate store.

ここにボクのアルバムが並ぶんだと思うと、リリースの実感が湧いてきたよ。たくさんの人にCDを手に取ってもらえますようにって想いを込めてきた。

As I imagined my album being displayed there, the realization hit me that it was going to be released soon. There I wished that many people would get a copy of it.

コーナーにもサインとコメントを残させてもらったから、お店に立ち寄った時はチェックしてみてね。

I also left a comment on the sign there, so check the store's opening hours and go see it.

次の仕事に向かうよ。CD発売の準備をしないと。休憩が取れたら、また会いに来るね。

I have to make some preparations for the CD release so I'm heading to my next job. I'll be back when I take a break.

今日の主役であるトキヤから連絡があったよ。ロケ先から電話をくれた。忙しいはずなのに、本当に律儀だよね。

I got a call from Tokiya, the star of the day. He called me from where he was having a film shoot. He really is considerate even when he's so busy.

ロケに行く前に事務所に寄るって聞いたから、バースデープレゼントとソロアルバムを預けておいたんだ。

I heard that he would go to the agency before he heads to his film shoot, so I left his birthday present and my solo album there.

ボクからのプレゼントは、誕生日である「6日」にちなんで「6冊」の本にした。それぞれ違ったジャンルの本になってる。本を選ぶにあたって、ボク自身も目を通して、面白いと感じたものにしたよ。

I gave him six books because his birthday is on the 6th. Each of a different genre. I had read them myself and picked the ones I thought were interesting.

6冊全て封筒に入れて、外からは何の本かわからないようにしてある。こんな時に読むといいよっていうヒントだけを書いてね。そのまま渡すだけだと面白くないかなと思って。

Since giving them as they are would be boring, I wrapped each of the six books in covers so he won't be able to tell which book it is. I just wrote suggestions on when he should read each book on the covers.

トキヤも気に入ってくれたみたい。いつもより声のトーンが高くて、表情を見なくても喜んでるのが伝わってきたよ。

It looks like Tokiya is fascinated by this idea. Even without seeing his expression, his higher tone of voice clearly told me how happy he was.

アルバムはロケの移動中にすでに聴いていて、新曲の両方に衝撃を受けたって言ってくれた。休憩時間を全て使って、曲の感想を語ってくれたよ。

He told me that he listened to my album on the way to his filming location and was equally stunned by both of my new songs. He then spent his whole break telling me his thoughts on them.

ボクも休憩時間が終わりそう。深夜になっちゃうけど、みんなと発売日を一緒に迎えたいから、よかったら時間を空けておいてね。

My break is also about to end. It's getting late, but I want to wait with everybody until it's release day, so please wait a little longer if you can.

I want to get to that moment as quickly as possible, but I also want to feel this excitement for a little while longer... I feel so ambivalent.

My Solo Best Album "Ambivalent" was created because I want to continue singing my love to you. It's the embodiment of our dreams.

やっとみんなに届けられると思うと感無量だよ。アイドルとして活動を始めてからこれまでの思い出がたくさん詰まった1枚になった。

I'm filled with so much emotion now that my album can finally reach all of you. All my memories spanning from when I began being an idol to now are all packed into this one CD.

Natsuki and Syo rushed over to cheer me on. We've made plans to celebrate the release together.

ナツキは新曲が気に入ったみたい。ずっと聴いていたいからって、リピート再生してるよ。聴く度に発見があるんだって。音楽のことになると入り込んじゃうところは変わらないね。

Natsuki seems to like my new songs. He keeps saying he'd like to listen to them forever, so he puts them on repeat. Once it's about music, he gets absorbed in it. This side of him never changes.

ショウは、どこからどうやってこんな歌声出してるんだ！？って、驚いてる。素直なリアクションは最高の賛辞だね。ショウも知らない一面を見せられたってことだから。

Syo was surprised about the new side I showed in the album  and asked, "Where and how did you do those vocals?!" Such honest reactions really are the highest form of praise.

2人の先輩として、面目躍如といった感じかな。同じアイドルとして、表現者として、いつまでも刺激を与えられる存在でありたい。

I want to live up to my title as their senpai. I always want to be a source of innovation as a fellow idol and artist.

これから2人が差し入れてくれたうどんを食べるんだ。まさか食事の準備をしてくれてるなんて思わなかった。その気持ちが、はなまるだね。

We're going to eat the udon they brought. I didn't expect them to get meals for all of us. This feeling gets a hanamaru.

トッピングは2人がボクのために選んでくれたんだって。揚げ物が3つも乗ってて、すごくボリュームがある。でもレモンを絞ると酸味が加わって、すっきり食べられそう。

The two of them picked my toppings together, they said. Because of the three fried pieces, the total volume of my dish is quite large. I can make this easier to eat by adding some acidic flavor with lemon juice.

こうしていると、ナツキのソロベストアルバムの発売日を思い出すね。ボクと同じ日付だから。その時は、ナツキのオフの日に3人で登山にも行った。

Spending time like this reminds me of the release date of Natsuki's Solo Best Album. It happens to have the same release date as mine. Back then, the three of us went mountain climbing on Natsuki's day off.

ショウのアルバムの時も3人で遊んだんだけど、わずかな情報でカフェを探し回ったりして大変だった記憶がある。考えてみると、大切な時には必ず3人で集まってるね。

We were also together during the time of Syo's album release. I remember when we were struggling to find a cafe with very little information. Now that I think about it, the three of us were always together during special occasions.

食べないと麺が伸びちゃうから、食事に戻るよ。夜には楽曲の話をしに来る。待っててね。

It's time to go back to eating, or else my noodles will get soggy. I'll be back at night to talk about the songs. Wait for me.

お待たせ。約束通り、アルバムの表題曲である「アンビバレント」について触れていこうと思う。

Sorry for making you wait. As promised, I'm here to talk about the title track of my album "Ambivalent".

もう聴いてくれたかな？まだって人も大丈夫だよ。ボクの話を踏まえて聴いてもらえたら、より深く理解できるはずだから。

Have you given it a listen? It's okay if some of you haven't. If you listen to what I'm about to say, you'll have a better understanding when you hear it.

「アンビバレント」は、ボクという存在自体がテーマなんだ。自分とは何なのか？理想と現実の狭間で揺れ動く気持ちが不安定なメロディやアレンジで表現されてる。

The theme of "Ambivalent" is my existence. That's why the arrangement of the melody was made to sound fragile—to show the fluctuating feelings between idealism and reality and to express the question of my existence.

他者が持つイメージと実際のボクとの違い。どちらも自分であること。それを受け入れるまでの葛藤を歌詞に描いた。

It's about the gap between the real me and the image that others have of me. Both are me. I tried to convey the conflict that I had coming to terms with that in the lyrics.

でもその葛藤は、決してネガティブなものではない。痛みや苦しみさえも、ボクがボクであることの証なんだって思えたから。そう思わせてくれたのは君のおかげ。

However, that conflict isn't a bad thing. I believe that all the pain and suffering ultimately proves that I'm me. The reason I came to think that way was because of you.

自分をさらけ出すことは、怖さもあったけど、可能性を信じて前に踏み出してみたんだ。君にボクのことをもっと知って欲しいから……。

Opening up like this is scary, but I tried believing in the possibilities and took a step forward. After all, I want you to know more about me...

この曲を歌って、自分の殻を破ることができた。普段とは違う言葉で綴った歌詞。そして、低い音域を使った歌声で感じてもらえるんじゃないかな。

By singing this song, I was able to shed my shell. For example, I used different words and phrases I normally wouldn't use, and I sang in a lower range than usual.

語りたいことはもっとあるけど、ここまでにしておくね。音楽に対しての感じ方は人それぞれだから、君の考え方を大切にしてほしい。話を聞いてくれてありがとう。おやすみ。

Good morning. Today I took a different route to the agency.

ボクは効率の面から、ルーティンを作ってそれに従いがちなんだ。だから最近はそれをあえて崩してみてる。知らない場所には新しい出会い���発見があるからね。

For the sake of efficiency, I stick to my established routines, but recently I started to break those routines because in unfamiliar places, I can meet new people and see new things..

みんなも些細なことでいいから、チャレンジしてみて。何か変わるきっかけを掴めるかもしれないから。今日も1日、お互い新鮮な気持ちで臨もう。

You should all try to challenge yourselves, even if it's by doing a small thing. You might be able to change something. Today, let's continue moving forward with enthusiasm.

"Musou" is about the desire to make our dreams come true through singing. The weight of my feelings turned into a hard rock song. May it reach and resonate to the depths of your heart.

君がボクにたくさんの愛をくれた。たくさんの感情を教えてくれた。そのどれもがボクにとっては興味深くて、もっと愛されたい。ボクも愛したいって求めるようになった。ボクには君が必要だから。

You have given me so much love and have taught me many emotions. Each of them is most fascinating to me. I want to be loved even more to the point that I long to love. That's why I need you.

今夜はビジュアル撮影の話をしようと思う。ブックレットのインタビューでも語ってるけど、ビジュアルのコンセプトは完全さと不完全さ。

Tonight I wanted to talk about the photo shoot for the cover visual. I mention it in the interview of the included booklet, but the concept of the visual is perfection and imperfection.

様々なモチーフにはそれぞれ意味があって、それを組み合わせることで、みんなに想像を広げてもらえたらって思ったんだ。

I thought I could leave more up to your imagination by combining different motifs

ビジュアルにもアンビバレントな要素を盛り込んでるよ。メカニカルなボディペイントやデジタルなアートの中にボクが立つことで、より「生命」の存在を感じてもらえたんじゃないかな。

There are even ambivalent elements in the visual. By being surrounded by digitalistic artworks and being covered in mechanical body paint, my existence, in contrast, seems very "alive". 

ビジュアルを見た時に衝撃を受けた人もいたみたい。そのくらい強い感情が生まれたってことだから、ボクの試みは成功したともいえるね。

Some people seemed shocked when they saw the visual. The fact that such strong emotions were evoked is proof that my attempt was successful.

インタビューを読んで気になってる人もいるみたいだから、撮影現場で使っていた香水についても触れておこうかな。

Some of you who read the interview seem curious about the perfume I used during the photo shoot. Let's talk about it.

アルバムをイメージしてオーダーしたオリジナルの香りなんだ。使った香料はシアーフローラル、アクアオゾン、ハーバルグリーン、ジュニパーベリー、イリス。シャープでクリアな無機質さと、柔らかくて温かなナチュラルさが共存してる。

I commissioned an original fragrance with the image of my album in mind. The fragrances used were Sheer Floral, Aqua Ozone, Herbal Green, Juniper Berry and Iris. Sharpness, clarity and artificiality coexist with softness and natural warmth.

この香水をつけていた時に、リンゴと事務所ですれ違ったんだけど、わざわざUターンしてきて絶賛してくれたよ。

I was wearing this perfume when I passed Ringo at the agency. He even did a complete U-turn to compliment me on it.

出会ったことのない新鮮な香りで、強いわけじゃないのに不思議と惹きつけられる魅力があるって。香水の名前を聞かれたから、「アンビバレント」だよって答えておいた。

He told me that it was a fresh fragrance that he hasn't smelled before, and that it wasn't heavy but had a captivating charm. When he asked what the name of the perfume was, I told him: "It's Ambivalent."

牛乳だけじゃなくて、ヨーグルトをかけたりしてもいいみたいだね。トッピングも好きなフルーツだったり、ナッツだったり。どれも美味しそうな組み合わせで迷う。

You told me to try yogurt instead of milk. As for toppings, you told me about your favorite fruits and nuts. I'm a little lost because all the combinations sounded good.

少しずつだけど素材を買い足して、いろいろ試してみる。そのうち、ボクのお気に入りができるのかな。おすすめの組み合わせができたら教えるね。

ボクがデザインしたTシャツのサンプルをチェック中。プリントが綺麗に出てるか、インクの色がイメージ通りかを確認するんだ。

I got a sample of the T-shirt I designed and I'm checking the quality right now. I'm making sure that the printing is done well and that the color of the ink matches the one I had in mind.

On this occasion, I will reveal a little bit of the design here! Don't worry, I have permission to do so. It's inspired by a certain song, can you tell?

デザインをする時に心掛けてるのは、みんなに喜んでもらえるものにすること。ボクらしい個性も大切だけど、コーディネートに取り入れやすいものにしたいと思ってる。

During the design phase, I kept thinking about what would make you all happy. Of course, adding my individuality was important, but more than that, I tried to make the design easy to coordinate with.

ステージ上からTシャツを着た人を見つけた時は、すごく嬉しい気持ちになるんだ。似合ってるよって、心の中で呟いてる。このTシャツもたくさんの人に愛されるものになるといいな。

Being on stage and seeing someone in the crowd wearing my T-shirt would make me incredibly happy. I'd think in my head, "It fits you well!", and I hope a lot of people will love this shirt.

おはよう。仕事のスタートが遅めだから、外を散策してる。

Good morning. Since work starts a little later today, I'm walking around outside.

今年の夏はコラボレーションさせてもらったサングラスをよくかけてる。使ってるからケースの写真でごめんね。このケースも折りたためて便利だから気に入ってるよ。

I've been wearing the collaboration sunglasses a lot this summer. Since I'm using them right now, I can only show you a picture of the case. I like the way you can conveniently fold it.

サングラスはファッションのポイントにもなるし、外出の際の変装にも一役買ってくれる便利なアイテム。みんなも使ってくれてるかな？

Sunglasses are also a fashion statement, but on occasions when I need to go outside, they can be used as a disguise. Do you use sunglasses as well?

薄紫色のカラーレンズはもちろん、ときめきを表現したテンプルの形がデザインのアクセントになってる。正面からだけじゃなくて、横から見た時の印象も意識したよ。

The lenses are tinted light purple and the temples are designed to represent a heartbeat. That way, there's not only an effect when you look at it from the front, but also when you look at it from the side.

スペシャルTシャツのサンプルをもらったよ。ちょっと開けてみようかな。

I received a sample of my special T-shirt. Let me open it up real quick.

Tシャツに描き込んだ鳥のモチーフは、歌詞を考えている時に描いてたものなんだ。イメージを広げるために文字だけじゃなく、絵を描いたりしてた。

I drew the bird motif on the T-shirt while thinking of the lyrics. To expand my imagination, I not only wrote words, but also drew pictures.

絵を描くのはあまり得意じゃないから、何回も練習したりしてね。簡略化された線で表現しなくちゃいけないから、それが難しい。でも、いい気分転換になったよ。

I'm not really good at drawing, so I practiced a lot. I had to express it with simplified lines, which was quite difficult. But all in all, it was a nice change of pace.

ランマルがスペシャルTシャツを着てやってきた。ダンスレッスンの合間にCDを受け取りに来てくれたみたい。事務所で着替えたから問題ないらしい。普通に日常使いしてるんだね。

Ranmaru actually came while wearing my special T-shirt. Apparently he came to pick up my CD during a break from his dance lessons. It wasn't a problem because he changed clothes at the agency. He seems to wear it for everyday use.

アルバムの話をするランマルの表情が、自分のことみたいに嬉しそう。楽曲については、また時間を作って話すことにした。お互いこの後も予定があるからね。

Talking about my album, Ranmaru's expression turned cheerful, as if it were his own album. But we had to find the time to talk about the songs some other day since we both had plans afterwards.

CDと交換で、種なしぶどうで作ったコンポートをもらったよ。すごく綺麗な薄紫色。ローズマリーで香り付けされてるらしい。全く味の想像がつかない。

In exchange for my CD he gave me compote made from seedless grapes. The color was a lovely light purple. Apparently it has a rosemary scent. I can't imagine at all what it's going to taste like.

甘さ控えめだから、グラノーラに添えたりしてもいいらしい。残ったシロップはゼラチンを入れて、ゼリーにするのがランマルのおすすめ。ジャムとの違いについても教えてくれたよ。

Ranmaru said the sweetness is moderate, so adding it to granola might be good. He encouraged me to add gelatin to my leftover syrup and make jelly that way. He also taught me the difference between that and jam.

ランマルもレッスンに戻るみたいだから、ボクも仕事の続きをするよ。また夜にね。

Ranmaru seems to be returning to his lessons, so I'll continue my work as well. See you tonight.

Good morning. I ate my granola mixed with the compote that Ranmaru gave me today.

いつものグラノーラがまるでカフェのスイーツみたいになった。ぶどうの甘みだけじゃなくて、レモンの酸味も感じる。そこにふわっと香るローズマリー。絶妙な味のハーモニーだね。

My granola ended up looking like a dessert from a cafe. As I was eating, I could not only taste the sweetness of the grapes, but also the sourness of lemon. Combined with the scent of rosemary, it made an exquisite harmony of flavors.

ランマルのアルバムのリリース期間にも手作りのマスタードをもらったんだけど、それもすごく美味しかった。蜂蜜の甘さや醬油のコクが特徴的で、市販品と食べ比べてみたけど全然違った。

I also once received Ranmaru's homemade mustard back when his album was released, which was really delicious. The sweet honey and rich soy sauce flavors were very distinctive. I compared it to store-bought mustard, but the taste was completely different.

最近、食に対する興味が広がっていくのを感じてる。みんなや仲間の影響が大きいかな。これからもいろいろ教えてね。

I offered to deliver my album to the agency for him, but it seems receiving my album in person was more meaningful to him. That is very much like him.

アルバムについては聴き込んでから話そうってことになった。また会う目的ができて、ボクも嬉しい。

He wants to hear it first, though, before we start talking about it. We're happy to have another opportunity to meet.

レンとこれからラブリルファンタジーをプレイするよ。CDを受け渡すだけじゃ物足りないんだって。面と向かってプレイするのは久しぶりかも。

It wasn't enough to just give him my album, so we're going to play some Loveril Fantasy now. It's been a while since we got together to play in person.

家からいつも使ってるマウスパッドを持ってきた。環境はなるべく同じにしたいからね。他にもラブリルファンタジーのグッズは愛用してる。

I brought my mousepad from home to make my environment as similar to home as possible. And I also use other Loveril Fantasy goods on a regular basis.

長時間のプレイは難しいから、中ランクのクエストをやる予定。1人でもクリアできるけど、2人で協力したほうが断然早く終わるからね。レンにも頼りにされてるし、頑張らないと。

It would be difficult to play for a long time so we plan to do some mid-ranked quests. They can be done solo, but together we can do them much faster. I rely on Ren a lot, so I have to do my best.

仲間と好きなことをして遊ぶ時間は、ボクにとって大切なんだ。少しの間だけど、思い切り楽しんでくるよ。

I appreciate the time I get to do the things I like with colleagues. I'm going to enjoy myself to the fullest, at least for a while.

I signed it with all my heart. I was a bit unsure where to sign though. I decided on a place that is only visible on the poster but not on the CD.

正解は、セシルからもらったテラリウムの様子をチェックすることだよ。今のとこ��あまり大きな変化はないけど、良い状況なんだと思う。

The answer is: looking after the terrarium I got from Cecil. Nothing much has changed so far, but I think that's a good sign.

温度や湿度が適しているかを確認して、必要であれば水をあげる。記録をつけるのも楽しいし、部屋に植物があるだけで雰囲気が変わる。

I check the temperature and humidity and add water if necessary. It's also fun to document, and the plants have an effect on the atmosphere of the room.

仕事の合間に見つけたお店で植物を買ったよ。セシルのテラリウムと一緒に面倒をみようと思ってる。

I found a shop between work sessions and bought a plant there. I thought I could take care of it while maintaining Cecil's terrarium.

ヘミオニティス アリフォリア。ハートの形をした葉が特徴のシダ植物。その形状からハートファンやバレンタインファンとも呼ばれるみたい。

Hemionitis arifolia. It's a fern characterized by its heart-shaped leaves. This must be the reason why it's also called "heart fern" or "Valentine's fern".

直射日光を避けた明るい場所を好み、水やりには注意が必要らしい。季節や環境によっても変わるから、しっかり観察して適切な管理をしないとね。

It has a preference for well-lit areas, but direct sunlight should be avoided. It's important to pay attention to how you water it, because the amount of water depends on the season and environment. You must pay close attention to it.

ボクは人間観察が好きなんだけど、植物観察も新しい趣味に加わったかもしれない。植物は言葉を話さない分、コミュニケーションをとるのが難しいけど、時間をかけて理解できるようになりたいな。

I like observing people, but observing plants could be a new interest for me. Plants can't talk, which makes communication quite difficult, but I want to learn to understand them over time.

いままでに挑戦したことのないコンセプトだから、すごく興味深い。こういう機会がないと触れないジャンルだし、ボクと同じだって人も多いんじゃないかな。ある程度知識が深まったら、実際に日常生活でも試してみようと思ってる。

It's about a concept I've never been immersed in before, so it's very compelling. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who wouldn't be able to touch this genre unless an opportunity came along. Once I deepen my knowledge about it, I think I'll use it in my daily life.

ボクたちの活動を通して、みんなが新しいことを知ったり、経験できたりするのは素直に嬉しい。君の人生に少しでも喜びという彩りを添えられたらって思う。

Many people may have today off, but having a weekday free makes it feel a little more special. At times like these, I wonder what I should do.

天気のいい日は家の近くを散策したりすることが多いかな。夏は気温が高いから、注意する必要があるけど。あとは、仕事に関する資料を読んだりしてる。

I like to take strolls near my home on days with good weather. But the temperatures are high in the summer, so it's important to be careful. Otherwise, I tend to read my documents for work.

Camus called me to an appointed place. It looks like a western-styled building. It seems I won't just be giving him my album, then.

個室に通された。これからアフタヌーンティーが始まるらしい。

I got led to a private room. Looks like we'll soon have some afternoon tea.

とりあえずCDを渡した。まさかこんなところでアルバムをやり取りするなんて思わなかった。せっかくだから飾っておきましょう、だって。

I went ahead and gave him my CD. But I never expected to exchange my album at such a place. He said that we might as well make it a special occasion.

大きなスタンドが出てきた。プレートにセイボリーもスイーツも3個ずつ乗ってるけど、他に誰か来るのかな？

A big sweets stand appeared. On the plates are savories and sweets for three. Will someone join us?

カミュが2人分食べるみたい。特別な日だからって言い訳してるけど、通常運転だね。夏の暑さに負けてるかと思ったけど、元気そうでよかった。

Apparently, Camus will eat two servings. He excused it by calling it a special day but this is just his standard procedure. I believed the heat of the summer had afflicted him but he seems to be doing well.

今日はカミュが紅茶をサーブしてくれるらしい。お茶のセレクトもお任せ。優雅で無駄のない動作は、さすが執事アイドル。

Camus wants to serve black tea today. Leave the tea selection to him. That graceful economy of movement is what you expect from the steward idol.

カミュが少しの間、ボクを借りることを許してくださいだってさ。アルバムについて話しながら、アフタヌーンティーを堪能してくるよ。

We got more pumped up as I talked about my album songs and Camus about sweets. Both subjects become more enjoyable the more you know about them.

次はカミュのターンだから、ここでのみんなとのやり取りについても話したよ。バトンを繋いでいくような感覚があって、ボクなりに力になれたらいいなと思ってる。

ただいま。少し前に家に着いて、手に入れたものを確認してた。

I'm back. I got home just a while ago and went through the things I bought.

まずは朝食で食べてるグラノーラ。ベースにもいろいろなフレーバーがあるんだね。チョコレート、紅茶、コーヒー、シナモンとかスパイスがきいたもの。気になるものをいくつか購入したよ。

First, granola for breakfast. Even the granola base comes in different flavors. Chocolate, black tea, coffee, cinnamon, and all kinds of spices. I bought the flavors that I thought were interesting.

次に、植物栽培用の道具。霧吹きや水差し、栄養剤。調べて必要そうなアイテムを揃えてみた。あまり過保護にしてもいけないけど、ボクの元に来たからには大切にしてあげたいと思う。

Then I got tools for cultivating plants. I got a spray bottle, a watering can, and nutrients. I gathered a few items that seem necessary for my research. I don't want to be too overprotective, but since they are by my side, I want to treat my plants well.

そしてメインは画材店。絵を描くための道具を見てきたよ。種類がすごく豊富で驚いた。「SHINING MUSEUM」の時にも感じたけど、何で描くか、どの紙を使うかでテイストが変わってくる。

And the place I wanted to visit the most was the art supply shop. I looked at some art tools, and the vast variety surprised me. What you use to draw,  and the paper you use depends on the taste of the artist. I had the same realization during the time of the SHINING MUSEUM.

もちろん、コラボレーションした水彩色鉛筆も使うよ。それと合わせて、新しく手に入れたブラッシュタイプの水性ペンも試してみる。

I still use the watercolor pencils from back then, of course. Additionally, I want to test out my newly bought water-based brush pen.

描いたところを水に溶かして使うこともできるから相性が良さそう。細芯もついてて、そっちは細かい部分を描くのに向いてる。

It works well because the paint can be blurred with water afterwards as well. It also comes with a thin lead that can be used for more detailed parts.

絵の練習をしてくるよ。何を描くか悩むな。もっと上手くなったら、どこかでみんなに見せられるといいんだけど。

I'm going to practice drawing without worrying about what to draw. It would be great to show you my drawings one day when I'm better at it.

I strongly felt your presence throughout my daily life. Likewise, you got to know about the way I live my daily life. How was it?

休憩時間だよ。少しだけど、最近撮った写真の話をしようかな。みんなからもよく聞かれてたからね。

It's break time. Let's take some time to talk about the first picture I took. Many of you asked for it.

最初は記録として撮影していたけど、いつからか撮ること自体が楽しいと思うようになった。みんなに共有することもできるし。

At first, I only took pictures to document things but then I started to enjoy it. That way I can share them with everyone too.

でも最近はシャッターを切るよりも、自分の心に焼き付けることを優先してる。記憶に残せるように。

Recently, however, instead of pushing the shutter I prefer to burn the moments into my heart to keep them in my memory.

とある日の空。夏らしい青空。なんでもない日常がすごく輝いていた。君と過ごした2週間の思い出と共に胸に刻むよ。

The sky on that day was a typical blue summer sky. Shining on an ordinary day. Engraved in my heart together with the memories we made in the past two weeks.

名残惜しいけど、そろそろ仕事に戻るよ。次に会う時には嬉しい報告ができるといいな。

I'm reluctant to leave but it's about time for me to return to work. Next time we meet I hope I can deliver good news.

And Reiji wasn't alone—Ranmaru and Camus came as well.

スケジュールに入ってた仕事はフェイク。サプライズのために事務所に協力してもらって、予定を入れておいたんだって。

The job I had on my schedule was faked. The agency helped them by arranging my schedule to surprise me.

まさかとは思ってたけど、こんな手の込んだやり方で来るとは思わなかったよ。かなり前から押さえられてたから、全然疑ってなかった。

I never expected them to come up with such an intricate plan. I didn't suspect anything since it was planned quite some time ago.

会議室で待ってたら、突然マラカスを振りながらレイジが登場。ランマルとカミュも続けて入ってきたから驚いたよ。念のため伝えておくと、ランマルとカミュはマラカスは振ってない。

I was waiting in the conference room when suddenly Reiji appeared, playing his maracas. I was surprised to see that Ranmaru and Camus followed. For disclosure: Ranmaru and Camus were not playing maracas.

今もアンビバレントな気分だよ。長い間一緒にいても、3人の考えてることは予測できない。ボクを困らせたり、喜ばせたり。本当に面白いね。

This, too, makes me feel ambivalent. We've been together for a long time but I still can't predict them. They trouble me and they make me happy. They're definitely amusing.

オリコンウィークリーのお祝いをしてくれるらしい。おめでとうの言葉だけでも十分なんだけど。なんだか気合を入れて準備してるみたいだから付き合ってあげようかな。

They say they want to celebrate the Oricon Weekly Ranking. Congratulations would have been enough. But they seem to have worked hard on preparing this surprise, so I'll go along with it.

I kept you waiting. The time we spent together felt really fulfilling. I got celebrated a lot and we even talked about the past two weeks.

ソロアルバムの発売と、ここで君と過ごした2週間はかけがえのない経験になった。どの瞬間も大切な思い出なんだ。ボクはきっと、ずっと忘れない。

The release of my album, as well as the two weeks we spent together have become irreplaceable experiences to me. Each moment is an important memory that I'll surely never forget.

毎朝、君に挨拶をして。心が動いたことがあったら共有して。それを君が受け止めて返してくれる。何気ない日常が特別なものになった。

Greeting you each morning, sharing things that moved me with you, and seeing your reactions. That's what made my ordinary daily life special.

APH America "Ethnography" and Headcanons (SFW)

The United States of America, Alfred F. Jones, Mr. Stars and Stripes, 'Merica, Pretty Boy, um... or just simply America.

Here is a list of data I have gathered from this country and oh boy, what an interesting specimen we have here....

Ethnography

You will find this find this mythological creature at your local Walmart superstore during the evening hours on a weekday, sporting flannel loungewear pants (The plaid kind), a cotton t-shirt that definitely has been worn no less than two (2) times, Old Navy $1 flip flops, and a gray jacket.

When asked about his late night runs to the popular supermarket chain, his answer is just simply:

"There's nothing else to do and no where to go."

Conclusion: What a fucking gross nerd.

America offers a cold can of Coca-Cola, I accept it.

He shows me a very long light blue "Long Furby" from his collection, further proving how much of a dork he was.

When asked what kind of music he liked (in regards to his music collection), he replies:

I have recorded enough data for today (the smell was bothering me) and left his home to do further extensive research.

Headcanons:

America has a deep love for cars and trucks, he can be seen working on his vintage 1968 Dodge Charger R/T called 'Thunderbird' (an absolute speed demon that can reach at top speeds of muthafuckin' 156 mph), and his enormous 2019 Ford F-150 'Big John' that he loves to drive to world meetings because he is a total stud muffin showoff.

Oh yeah, he defiantly modded 'Big John' horns with airblasters. So when he parks his car and he sees other nations come out of their vehicles, he pounds on that horn and scares the living shit out of them.

He totally does 2 am donuts in the Thunderbird the front of Walmart parking lots with his brother Canada to freak him out.

Other than seeing him work on his cars while listening to "Waking Up in Vegas by Katy Perry" on the radio, he's in his room sorting out his action figure and comic book collection.

Damn, what what a geek.

He has an eBay account where he buys, trades and auctions his collection as his interests constantly change.

If you think him being a geek, dork and a nerd is gonna save him from getting a basic ass Stanley cup, you're wrong.

He has a navy blue one that he takes to meetings and he would get dirty looks from the other nations.

"Goddamn it America, you do not need that much coffee."

"Fuck you, you scone sucking twink. It's not coffee, it's the Panera Super Charged Lemonade mixed with Redbull."

He gave Canada a red one for his birthday that he also takes with him to meetings.

I Thought He Was With You

Hailey is sitting at her desk when her phone rings. She looks down to see her partner’s brother’s name.

Why wouldn’t Jay just call her himself?

“What’s up, Will?”

“What insane kind of undercover did Voight send him on?” Will asks, sounding mildly panicked.

“What undercover?” she asks. “I thought he was with you?”

Jay had texted her on Friday night, saying that something had come up with the family cabin in Wisconsin. He was heading up with Will to take care of it and wouldn’t be at work until Tuesday.

“I haven’t seen him since last Tuesday.” Will says. “He texted Friday that he was going undercover and I probably wouldn’t hear from him over the weekend.”

“I don’t know anything about that.” Hailey says, glancing toward her boss’s office. “What has you freaking out?”

“Oh shit.” he mutters. “I got distracted.. I... just found his favorite shirt on my car. It’s cut up and covered in blood and I… Hailey where is my brother?”

“I don’t know.” Hailey says, standing up and heading toward Voight’s office. “But we’re going to figure it out. Don’t touch the shirt. I’m sending crime scene techs out to collect it.”

“Should I stay here or…” he asks.

“Yeah.” she confirms. “Stay until they get there and then come here. Or I can have someone pick you up.”

“Don’t waste time with me.” he insists. “Find Jay.”

Voight looks up as she ends the call.

“Word on Halstead?”

“We need to get crime scene to Will’s apartment.” she says. “Jay wasn’t with him over the weekend and he just had Jay’s bloody shirt left on his car.”

 He makes the call, routing a crime scene team. But then he starts asking questions.

“Jay texted about something with the family cabin.” he says. “That he was going up with Will.”

“I got the same text.” Hailey agrees. “But from what Will says, he texted him that he was going undercover.”

“So nobody has seen him since he left work on Friday and we have no idea where he is.” Voight fills in.

Hailey nods.

“I was thinking I’d go check his apartment.”

“Take Burgess.” Voight orders.

She nods and steps back into the bullpen.

“Kim, can you run to Jay’s apartment with me?”

“Sure.” Kim agrees, grabbing her jacket. “I thought he was in Wisconsin?”

“It doesn’t look like it but we’re not sure what’s going on.” Hailey says.

The rest of the team frowns.

“So we don’t know where he is?” Adam asks.

Hailey just shakes her head.

“We thought he was with Will, Will thought he was with us and nobody has eyes.” she answers.

“He said he’d be in Tuesday.” Kevin reminds her of what she’d told them that morning. “Maybe he’s just dealing with something personal and doesn’t want to talk about it?”

“Will found his shirt on his car covered in blood.” Hailey answers. “Something’s wrong. Kim?”

“Let’s go.” her friend is quick to say and the two women jog down the stairs.

As they pass the front desk Trudy stops them.

“Do you know when Chuckles is going to be in?” she asks, waving a padded mailer. “I’ve got this package that was delivered for him.”

Hailey is halfway through waving her off when the words register.

“Who’s it from?” she asks, leaning against the desk.

“Does it-” Trudy trails off as she checks the envelope. “It’s from Hank. Why would he…?”

“Jay’s missing.” Hailey fills in when the woman trails off. “This might tell us why.”

She takes the envelope and then runs back up the stairs, Kim on her heels.

Voight looks up in surprise when they come back in less than five minutes after leaving.

“Trudy had a package for Jay.” Hailey says, holding it up. “From you.”

Voight frowns but takes the package, ripping it open. Out tumbles a CD.

Kevin takes it from him, sliding it into his computer. The team crowds around the screen as a video pops up. 

Jay is shirtless, strung up by his wrists. A hard punch catches him in the face and he spins. 

The entire team gasps as his back comes into view, covered in blood with long, thin lacerations spread across it. 

As they watch, a whip slams down on his back again sending him swinging forward. He cries out, hands twisting in the chains wrapped around his wrists. 

The camera zooms in and the whip comes down again causing blood to splatter across the camera lens. The person filming must have stepped closer. 

Whip. 

Jay’s knees give out. 

Whip. 

He doesn’t cry out this time, head falling to his chest. 

Whip.

Silence. 

Whip. 

Whip. 

His body is still swaying from the force of the hits but otherwise there’s no movement. 

Hailey can’t seem to stop thinking about the fact that her partner has been missing for almost three days at this point. 

And they hadn’t even been looking until twenty minutes ago. 

“There is a Colt 1911 in evidence under case number 19-IL-18309. I want it back or the good detective here dies.”

Adam scribbles down the case number, looking anxiously at Hailey. 

It’s a pretty solid lead on whoever’s behind Jay’s abduction but the fact that the kidnappers are handing it to them so easily doesn’t bode well. 

“I’ll be in touch with the details for the drop. “

And then the video ends, leaving them staring at Jay’s shredded back. 

“I’ll pull the case.” Adam says, scurrying back to his desk. “Sarge, you want me to reach out to evidence about the gun?”

“Let’s pull it.” Voight confirms. “Hailey, Kim. We still need to check out Jay’s apartment. We’re playing catch-up here.”

Hailey nods and runs back down the stairs. 

Jay’s apartment is clean and tidy like it always is and Hailey stands in the doorway, scanning the living room. 

There doesn’t appear to be any signs of struggle and Hailey pushes deeper into the apartment. Maybe he hadn’t been taken here but they’d seen his truck in the lot. 

She steps into the bedroom, freezing when she sees Jay’s phone lying in the middle of the stripped mattress. 

She searches the rest of the room, finding the blood-stained sheets thrown on the floor in the closet. A lamp that she remembers Jay telling her had been a housewarming present from Will lays in pieces under it. 

“Crime scene is on the way.” Kim announces from the doorway. 

“There’s a bloody thumbprint on his phone.” Hailey says. “They either made him unlock it so they could send those texts or he was unconscious, and hurt.”

“We’re going to find him, Hailey.” Kim says. 

“We should have found him already.” Hailey says, staring at the phone. “I should have realized something was wrong.”

“There’s no way you could have known.” Kim says. 

“He’s my partner.” Hailey growls. “And he’s been held prisoner and fucking tortured for almost three days. And I was… I spent an hour last night reading my book and drinking wine while my partner was being beaten.”

Kim just puts a hand on her shoulder. 

“We’re going to find him.” she repeats. 

Hailey just nods. Her phone rings. 

“Hey.” she says. “What do we have?”

“Case was an armed robbery.” Adam tells her. “Perp by the name of Edmund Volman. Jay was in the area when the robbery went down, heard it on the scanner and headed over to check it out. Caught sight of the guy running away the scene and chased him down.”

“Of course Jay arrested him.” Hailey scoffs. “Do we have an LKA?”

“He put a halfway house down for his release.” Adam answers. “Guy got out of prison on Friday. Kevin and I are on our way to see when they saw him last.”

“Associates?” 

“Voight is working on a list.” Adam says. “No way the asshole kidnaps Jay alone.”

“What’s the story with the gun?” Hailey asks. 

“The thing is old.” Adam says. “Edmund mentioned when he was arrested that it was his father’s. I’m guessing that’s why he wants it back.”

“That’s almost sweet.” Hailey says with a scowl. “Why wait this long to send the ransom video?”

“Your guess is as good as mine.” Adam says. “We’re pulling up now.”

They stay at Jay’s long enough for crime scene to get there and then head back to the district. 

Voight is building a list of associates when they walk into the bullpen, glaring at the board as if it’s personally offended him. 

Hailey comes up next to him, studying the list. 

“Asshole has a lot of friends.” she comments. 

“And runs in shitty circles where too many of them don’t have a problem helping him kidnap a cop.” Voight agrees. 

“I think I’ve got something.” Kim says and they turn to look at her. “I know we’ve all been wondering what the delay is about. They’ve had him since Friday night so why wait to reach out to us until Monday afternoon?”

“Especially given how much effort they had to put into keeping us in the dark.” Hailey agrees. 

“Exactly.” Kim says. “So I looked through dispatch logs from Friday night to this morning and I found something interesting. A US Bank was robbed this morning.”

“Volman likes US Banks.” Voight says. 

“Yeah.” Kim says with a nod. “He was only charged for the one Jay got him practically red-handed robbing but he’s been implicated in plenty of others.”

“Jay was supposed to get a call about his release.” Hailey notes, looking over the reports. 

“I’m thinking Volman was planning a job, maybe to stash up enough money to get out of town, maybe he just had a craving.” Kim fills in. “Took Jay out of the equation so that he wouldn’t be stopped before he had the chance. The gun might have been an after thought.”

“It’s a good theory.” Voight agrees. “Does it tell us anything about where Jay might be?”

“Volman got rusty on the inside.” Kim says. “He and his accomplice were seen on security cameras at the bank. They’ve covered their faces but it’s a better angle than we’ve had in the past.”

She brings up an image. 

“This guy is recognizable as Volman if you know what you’re looking at.” she points out. “I figure we compare the associates list with this image we can at least narrow things down.”

“What are his general measurements?” Voight asks. 

“5’11” with an average build.” Kim responds. “Caucasian. Blond hair in the bank.”

By the time Adam and Kevin return empty-handed they’ve narrowed the list down to single digits. Seven men who might have helped Volman rob the bank; seven men who might be helping him hold Jay prisoner. 

“We need to track down every single one of these bastards.” Voight says. “Figure out where they were this morning.”

As the team splits to their desks, the phone in Voight’s office rings. 

“Voight.”

“Sarge.”

Jay’s tone is strong but his voice is strained and cracked. 

“Jay. Are you alright, son?”

“I’m… ‘m okay.” Jay says, and Voight hears him swallow hard. “I’m good, Sarge.”

“Jay-”

“He’s fine. Do you have my gun?” Volman snaps. 

“You need to let him go.” Voight orders. “This doesn’t go well for you if he’s hurt any further.”

“I’ve sunk enough into this. I want my dad’s gun back.”

“We’ve pulled the gun.” Voight says. “Where do you want to do the drop?”

“11th and Manchester.” the man snaps. “Thirty minutes. Come alone.”

The line goes dead and Voight steps into bullpen. 

“We make the drop in thirty minutes.” he announces. “I’ll make contact with Volman. Kim, you’re with Hailey; Kevin and Adam. Stay close but stay out of sight until we have Jay.”

Hailey sits behind the wheel of her jeep, watching as Voight pulls over at the intersection. Kim sits next to her and Kevin and Adam are watching from the opposite direction. 

She checks her watch. 

Volman should be here any second now. 

A dark green Range Rover pulls up and Hailey sits up, lifting the receiver that’s transmitting from Voight’s phone. 

“Here we go.” she announces. 

Edmund Volman doesn’t even try to hide his identity as he steps out of the car. 

“You got the gun?” the man asks. 

“I’ve got it.” Voight replies, lifting a gun case. “Where’s Halstead?”

“Not here.” Volman says, shaking his head. “What I look like an idiot?”

“You want this, you’d better get him here.” Voight says. “Because I’m not handing it over without him.”

“My partner has him nearby.” Volman says. “I see the gun, verify that it’s mine and he’ll bring him down.”

Voight steps back, setting the case on the hood of his car and then opening it. Volman comes closer, inspecting it closely. 

Finally he straightens up and reaches for his phone. 

“Yeah. Bring him.” he snaps. 

Voight closes up the case and steps back, arms folding over his chest. 

It’s less than a minute before a grey van pulls up behind the Range Rover. A man in a mask jumps out of the driver’s side and runs around to slide the back door open. Voight catches a glimpse of a pair of legs. 

“Your boy is in the van.” Volman snaps. “We’ll take the gun, leave the car and the boy.”

Voight nods. As long as they have Jay, they can track Volman down later. So he walks away, moving toward the van as the masked man jogs over to the Range Rover. 

“Kev, Adam stay with them.” he whispers into his mike as he hears them get into the vehicle. 

And then he forgets about their perps as he reaches the front of the van. 

Jay is motionless in the back of the van, hands tied behind his back and duct tape over his mouth. 

Voight already knows what his back looks like but he wasn’t prepared for the amount of blood spreading from his lower abdomen. 

“Damn it.” he mutters, crawling into the back of the van and examining for an injury. 

He finds a three inch stab wound and immediately applies pressure. 

“Shit kid.” he mutters, reaching up to peel the tape away from Jay’s mouth. “Stay with me, Jay. Hailey get an ambulance down here, now.” 

Jay’s eyes slit open and he releases a weak groan. 

“That’s it.” he soothes. “I know it hurts, kid. You’re going to be okay. Just hang on.”

The next forty five minutes are a blur as paramedics arrive, racing to prep Jay for transport before loading him into the back of the ambulance. 

Voight climbs up next to him, ordering Hailey and Kim to make sure that Volman and his partner are brought into custody. 

The trip to the hospital is spent trying to stem the blood flow from the stab wound and bring Jay’s blood pressure back up. Things seem to be holding steady until they’re only a few minutes out from Med. 

Jay’s blood pressure plummets and his heart beat starts racing. 

“Shit.” the paramedic says, slapping the partition. “We need to get to Med now.”

Voight is jolted as the ambulance picks up speed but he barely even notices it as the rapid beep of the monitor transitions to a steady tone. 

The paramedic leaps up, leaning over Jay and starting compressions. 

“Damn it, Jay.” he mutters, grabbing hold of the side of the stretcher. “Don’t give up on us now, kid.”

Jay’s still in full arrest when they roll in at Med and he’s pulled out of the back of the ambulance and immediately swallowed up by a sea of medical personnel. 

As he falls back, he hears his name and turns to see Will approaching him. 

“He… did you…” the younger man stammers. 

“We have him.” Voight says. “And the team is closing in on the assholes responsible for this.”

“How bad is it?” Will asks. 

“He’s…” Voight starts before trailing off. 

What does he say? Technically Jay is dead at the moment.

“He’s lost a lot of blood.” he finally answers. “They’re trying to get him stabilized but it’s not good.”

“Damn.” Will mutters. 

There’s nothing left to say as they both turn to stare at the closed doors to the trauma room. 

Ten minutes later, the doors open again and Jay is raced toward the OR. The monitor shows that his heart is beating again and Voight breathes a sigh of relief. 

It’s an improvement.

Hailey walks into the waiting room an hour later. 

“Volman and his pal, Erick Cayson, are in custody.” she says, running her hand through her hair. “Any news?”

“He’s still in surgery.” Voight says. “Eating up the hospital’s blood supply.”

It’s two more hours before the surgeon comes out, pulling off his surgical cap. 

“He’s stable.” the man says before they can even get out of their chairs. “He lost a lot of blood but we’ve been able to prevent him from losing any more and we’ll be continuing blood transfusions to get that volume back up. He’s got several broken ribs in his back that we were able to use plates to support.”

“The stab wound?” Voight asks. 

“Nicked his spleen.” the doctor returns. “We were able to repair it and it doesn’t look like he’s going to lose it. The knife didn’t cause any other damage.”

Voight nods, working his jaw. 

“Can we see him?” he asks. 

The doctor frowns and Voight prepares himself for the answer to be no. Instead he gets a nod.

“Yeah. You can have a minute in PACU.” he answers. “I’ll take you back myself.”

Jay is pale and still. 

His face is darkly bruised with dark rings around both eyes. There’s a deep gash on the back of his head and a second at his temple. 

Voight doesn’t even want to consider the bruises that exist below the neckline. He’d seen enough on that video and in the back of that van. 

Drain lines poke out from under the blankets at his side and Voight swallows hard, redirecting his attention to the monitors. 

Jay’s heart is beating, a strong steady rhythm. 

He steps back as Will gently takes his brother’s hand, talking quietly to him. 

“This isn’t usually allowed.” the doctor tells him quietly. “But I know you were in the ambulance with him when he coded.”

“Thanks, doc.” Voight says. 

They hear a groan from the bed and they both rush forward, joining Will at Jay’s side as his eyes blink open. 

“Hey.” Will says gently, combing his fingers through his brother’s hair. “Easy buddy.”

“Will?” Jay croaks, eyes barely open.

“I’m here.” Will assures him. “So’s Voight.”

“Voight?”

“Here, kid.” Voight says, resting his hand on Jay’s arm. “You’re safe now. Volman is in custody and so is his accomplice. Just take it easy.”

Jay nods slowly. 

“T’rd.” he whispers. 

“You can sleep.” Will assures him. “We’ll take care of everything, okay?”

Jay nods again, eyes sliding closed with a small sigh. 

“Sleep bud.” Will repeats, stroking his fingers through his brother’s hair again. 

Voight allows a small smile. 

This whole thing has been a nightmare and he’ll be wondering for the rest of his life if he could have done something different; if he could have realized that Jay was missing sooner. 

But Jay’s going to be okay. 

And that’s what really matters.

Falcom will release Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on May 23 in Japan for 4,400 yen, the company announced.

COFFEE TIME: March 30th, 2024

OH HI! Tired eyes this Saturday morning. Finally having a moment of quietness to have some coffee before going out. Also taking this time to listen to My Savior by Carrie Underwood. Lifts me up, especially this Easter weekend. Been a pretty emotional week with the usual work stress, conspiracy theories on the internet and the horrible loss of a NYPD officer on Monday that hits close to home and left me feeling heartbroken for him and his family.

On a brighter note, TTPD is coming out SO SOON and I cannot wait to hear what this album sounds like and what it’s about. I’m also a huge sucker and bought all four vinyl variants and all four of those CD packages with the patches. However, when I get all of them, which will likely be after the album is released, I might want to iron them onto a black denim jacket! We’ll see. I’m also in the middle of figuring out my Eras tour look for Paris N1 and I’m running out of time!!! It’s so soon and I’m freaking out. I tried to put it together this week but didn’t like it so I bought everything again and a second shirt option LOL. It’s already a month away until we leave and I’m freaking out! Anxious but excited!!! It’s going to be a memorable Eras show—I can see it now!

pieces of an old wip Errant Hall-A Beastly Love Story

@queerlilchinchin and I were talking last night about stuff, and it got into monsters and how our writing would work, and I mentioned some of my monsters she hasn't met yet. Suffice to say I miss this story now, lol. I'm gonna put some snippets of what I had written before I abandoned it in early 2020 (my goodness it's been four years)

I'm gonna write it later I think, once I finish the luke/hector fic and novelization version :)

Gracen wondered at his pen pal, who never revealed his name. There were four boys. Was this the youngest? The one who needed a companion? Where were the other brothers? Where was the father? Everyone knew of him, but nobody had heard from him in some time…and the pen pal offered nothing in his letters to hint at the other brothers or his father.

Mostly right now, Gracen stayed holed up in his home, collecting the gifts and letters, greedy for the correspondence with his mysterious pen pal. Leaving the answering packages just inside the gates were the only times he’d leave his house. 

Their gifts he kept as relevant exchanges. A beloved book his mother had read to him for a beloved figurine his pen pal’s mother had given him. A favorite scarf Gracen had kept around since he’d gotten it for Christmas and wore often, for a favorite ‘good luck’ jacket. A jacket that had probably cost more than Gracen had ever seen altogether in his life. A favorite CD for a favorite CD (Gracen sent him an album by Fiona Apple, for an album by The Paper Kites, and found he enjoyed the songs). A favorite book for a favorite book (Gracen’s was Secret Garden, the Pen Pal sent him The Snow Spider), it was nice to know him intimately like this (Gracen always considered book choices and music were indicators of someone’s more secret personality and hadn’t been proven wrong so far), but what Gracen cherished were the letters. 

They were general ‘how are you, what’s your favorite movie, do you like such and such’ types. They also answered each of his questions from the previous week. The pen pal was to the point and brief, but he expressed things in ways that Gracen could see despite the brevity, he enjoyed these topics. Each letter had a comment along the lines of ‘we’re running out of time’, and Gracen wondered, sometimes, in brief moments of fancy, if he’d get snatched away by the pen pal in Errant Hall like in those fairy tales. 

I think my favorite part of my gay beauty and the beast story, is that I wanted to make the two pen pals before they end up as housemates. I love the long distance concept, and falling in love through letters

Good As I Been To You Bob Dylan (MoFi/ Columbia) (originally released in 1992, this reissue came out January 2024)

This is the very first time this album has been made available in the US. Back in the 1990s most US record companies decided to completely abandoned vinyl. Some things came out, but when Bob Dylan couldn't even get albums pressed on vinyl (this and his 1993 World Gone Wrong) in the US, it wasn't a commodity they wanted to deal with. You could get these albums on vinyl, you just had to know where to look.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (aka MoFi) have been pressed quality vinyl forever and they have been doing Dylan's catalog for several years now. I gave up on them buying all of them. They have the Original Master Recording series as well as Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab series and I couldn't tell you what the difference is between the two. I opted to only get the pressings in the former series, although I didn't even pay attention to which series this release fell into, I just wanted a US pressing of the album. It is limited to 5000 copies and it is numbered. You can spot the number on the back of the album in the lower left hand corner. Mine is #269.

Gone (thankfully) at the cardboard inserts that annoyed me that were stuck inside of every pressing. I ended up throwing them all away. These cardboard inserts were ads for albums pressed by MoFi. They were thick, clunky and I could never get them back inside the album jacket and ultimately pitched everyone of them. So, this album comes in an anti-static sleeve and that's the extent of the packaging. Below you can see the labels for this album.

I've included photos of the original 1992 European pressing which I bought back in the day. There was a point in time when I was a completist of Dylan and would buy every single thing baring his name. That doesn't happen so much any longer, not in the manner it once did! Below you can see the front and the back of the original pressing of that 1992 album.

There were two promotional items for this album that came out back in the day. The first is a single CD containing the song Step It Up And Go. This came in a white wallet card with a plastic slip cover that had a hype sticker on it telling you what was contained inside. Below is the front of that plastic with the hype.

Here is the back of the wallet card. It contains one of the worst photos of Dylan I've seen in a while. He looks as if he might have worked on the railroad with my father.

The second promo item for Good As I Been To You was a four track sampler named Acoustic. It came in a wallet card as well, except this one is brown and textured. You can see the front and the back of the wallet card below.

Here is the CD. The song titles can be difficult to read. The four songs included on Acoustic are Sittin' On Top Of The World, Tomorrow Night, Canadee-I-O and Hard Times.
