Government

Germany is a federal, parliamentary, representative democratic republic. The head of state is President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (right in the photo), and the head of government and chancellor is Olaf Scholz (left). Both are members of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD, Social Democratic Party).

Branches

The government is divided into three branches. The executive power is wielded by the prime minister, the deputy prime ministers, and the Council of Ministers.

The legislative branch consists of the Bundestag (Federal Diet), a lower house with 630 members, and the Bundesrat (Federal Council), an upper house with 69 senators.

Judicial power is wielded by courts, which follow civil law and the inquisitorial system, where the judges are actively involved in investigating the facts of the case.

Elections

The general minimum voting age in Germany is 18 years, but some states allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local and state elections. The minimum age for European elections is 16. The current coalition government, formed by the SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Grüne, The Greens), and the Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP, Free Democratic Party), promised to reduce the general voting age to 16 years. There are four types of elections: federal elections, state elections, municipal elections, and European Parliament elections.

General elections are held every four years, while state elections and elections to the European Parliament take place every five years. Municipal elections are held every five to eight years.

Political parties

Germany has a multi-party system with six main political parties: moderate SPD (center-left), conservative Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands (CDU, Christian Democatic Union of Germany) (center-right), social liberal The Greens (center-left), liberal FDP (center-right), far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD, Alternative for Germany) (right-wing), and progressive Die Linke (left-wing), in order of votes received. The CDU has a regional counterpart that only operates in Bavaria, the Christlich-Soziale Union in Bayern (CSU, Christian Social Union in Bavaria). It is more conservative in social matters than the CDU.

Kai Wegner was born in Berlin-Spandau on 15 September 1972. He is Protestant and has three children. After finishing school (Carl-Schurz-Grundschule and Hans-Carossa-Oberschule), he did his military service with Germany’s air force. In 1997, he completed his training as an insurance broker and worked with corporate clients for the next two years. Starting in 1999, he was employed by a family-owned construction company, where he was a member of management from 2001 to 2002. He then worked as a business consultant.   Wegner’s political career started in 1995, when he was elected to the Spandau Borough Assembly. From 1999 to 2005, he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and both the deputy chair of his parliamentary group and its economic policy spokesperson. In 2005, Wegner was elected to the German Bundestag, where he was a member of the Business and Technology Committee, among other things. From 2009 to 2017, he chaired the Berlin group within the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) parliamentary group and was the commissioner for large cities from 2014 to 2017. From 2018 to 2021, Wegner chaired the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s working group on construction, housing, urban development, and municipalities, in addition to being the parliamentary group’s spokesperson on construction policy.   He is active in many different organizations, including the DLRG Landesverband Berlin (Berlin chapter of the German Life-Saving Association), the Arbeitsgemeinschaft 13. August (August 13 study group), the Förderverein Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen (a friends association of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial), the CDU Mittelstandsvereinigung (an association for small and medium-sized businesses), the Christlich Demokratische Arbeitnehmerschaft (Christian Democratic Workers’ Association), the Unionhilfswerk (a charitable organization), the Reservistenverband (Reservist Association), the Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP) (a police union), the Deutsche Polizeigewerkschaft (DPolG) (a police union), the board of the InfraNeu Hauptverband (sustainable infrastructure), the board of the Lotto-Stiftung Berlin (Berlin Lottery Foundation), the board of the Hertha BSC Stiftung (Hertha BSC Foundation), and the Institut Privater Bauherren e.V. (an association of private-sector builders).   In 1989, Wegner joined the CDU and its youth organization, the Junge Union, in Spandau. He held various offices in this context, such as chair of the Berlin CDU’s organization for high-school students, chair of the Spandau Junge Union, and, from 2000 to 2003, chair of the Berlin Junge Union. From 1998 to 2005, he was deputy chair of the Spandau CDU and then, starting in 2005, chair of the Spandau CDU. From 2011 to 2016, he was secretary general of the Berlin CDU. In 2019, he was elected chair of the Berlin CDU and has been a member of the CDU’s national board ever since.   In 2021, Kai Wegner won election to the Berlin House of Representatives and then the chairship of the CDU parliamentary group. caro’s crash course for: Bayrisch

most of their slang appears in personal pronouns and substantives, different verbs and especially bavarian-ized adjectives are a bit rarer. so, it's rather understandable 60-80% of the time, 90% if you know the typical greetings which are their national treasure. "servus" (hi/goodbye) and "griaß gott" (lit. greet god = hello) are the two holy formulas that are even used in formal settings sometimes.

bavarians often use an adverb that cannot be translated into standard german: "FREILICH". a 1000% must-know. it approximates saying "ohh, surely, of course, certainly". even if a bavarian speaks without dialect, they'll still automatically say it. it pops up so often because it's a multi-purpose affirmative. if you hear 'freilich', all is well, it's a yes. in italy, one would say certamente, sicuramente.

since it is indeed a different language, it's better to emphasize the feeling of it rather than approach bavarian with classic german grammar. phrases over structure. it's inherent to italian as well so you'll be familiar with the idea.

the usual "-ein" or "a" often becomes "-oa". so, kein (=none) is koa, for instance. life-saver to know. "s" often becomes "sch". "ie" becomes an "ü" or "üa" sound, but that difference is minimal. TL;DR: less "i" sounds, more "o" and "u".

bisschen (= a little bit) becomes bisserl. it's a very frequent filler word.

the vibe of the language is this. serious and tough in situations that require it, fun and rowdy with teasing armchair critic comments when it's time to fool around. bavaria is the type of county where bar games and team spirit is a philosophy. unlike in french or korean, the impression has to be strong, like in russian. it's an extroverted dialect, expect those characteristics.

#1 tip for blunder avoidance and not causing offence: it's veeery important to know that bavarian to germany is what catalán is to spain; they go their own way politically as well. the biggest mistake you could pull is saying CDU (Christlich Demokratische Union), the party in Berlin, instead of CSU (Christlich-Soziale Union), the party in Bavaria. a blunt translation doesn't faze a bavarian, but a political confusion will. which includes that they are very strong on the catholicism, the most in germany, in fact. it could always be an underlying factor.

if we're talking football, it's the #1 small talk topic, especially since 70% of our national team consists of bavarian-bound players. it may or may not come up but some term research can give you safety. you can also do a case study with players to familiarize yourself, thomas müller is the wittiest example with textbook expressions and humor but he can also speak standard german.

bavarians are very well able to tone down the dialect and add a bit of a hannover flair aka our clearest dialect out there which every german has heard of and understands. ask if they speak "hochdeutsch", they'll get the idea. swabians and berlin folks are much more adamant to speak clearly, bavarians are like ok.

Eure Polizeischergen haben ganze Arbeit geleistet, indem sie das Volk öffentlich geschlagen, mit Pfefferspray malträtiert und eingesperrt hat. Ihr, die das deutsche Volk in Angst und Schrecken versetzt. Ihr, die Grundrechte aushebelt und Existenzen zerstört. Ihr, die Korrupt und Unmoralisch handelt.  Ihr, die euch schamlos an dem Leid anderer Menschen bereichert. Wir sollen Euch wieder wählen ????

A bit, yes.It's extremely Christian, I think even mainly Catholic, and conservative. They have their own specific party, the CSU (Christian Social Union/Christlich Soziale Union) that is the "sister party" in a way of the country wide party CDU (Christian Democratic Union/Christlich Demokratische Union), also the party Angela Merkel belongs to. Just recently they proposed/passed two laws: The first one saying that police can use hand grenades when necessary because guns aren't as precise and tend to harm innocents (because grenades don't, right?) and they can arrest you if they even slightly think you might be dangerous and keep you in jail for weeks without having to proof their claim. They can also spy on you for pretty much no reason than they want to. 1984 is calling, it wants its plot back. The second one basically says if you go into a hospital for mental health reasons, specifically because of your depression, they can lock you in there and you're being treated like you're a threat to society and the police is allowed to spy on you and treat you like a criminal. For having depression.What caused the most uproar the last weeks next to these was also the law that in Bavaria, every public authority building (? It's late and I'm too lazy to google) has to hang a cross in their halls as a sign of Bavarian culture and tradition. In the 90s, a law like that but for schools was forbidden because it was seen as forcing a religion on non-Christians and could raise the suspicion of bias against them. Critics of the law were called "religion haters" by CSU politicians, that's what they always do when someone criticizes their actions. They are called ignorant or haters but the politicians get all whiny and quiet when someone really challenges them.The general view of Bavaria has become extremely negative thanks to the politicans from there. They are conservative, capitalist and don't seem to care for anyone who isn't a straight white German man. That was also shown last year during the vote about same sex marriage. The majority of the CDU/CSU has voted "No", even Angela Merkel.So yeah, Bavaria is pretty much like the bible belt in the US. No one wants them but we're forced to put up with their shit. I still don't understand how our society votes for them to rule every God damn election since 2006.

Es könne nicht sein, dass man als unter 50-Jähriger dem Staat jahrelang auf der Tasche liege, aber am Ende keine Gegenleistung bringe, so Christian Gräff weiter. Der neue Perso-rganspendeausweis sei wie eine Zehnerkarte im Freibad so konstruiert, dass man ihn mit einer kleinen Metallzange abknipsen könne. Für ein Jahr Hartz-IV-Bezug müsse sich der „Arbeitsverweigerer“ (CDU-Sprache) zukünftig wahlweise von seinen Haaren, einer Niere, einem Teil der Lunge, einem Stückchen Bauchspeicheldrüse oder von etwas anderem trennen.

Um ganze zehn Jahre Hartz-IV zu beziehen, müssten die Schmarotzer (ebenfalls CDU Sprache) sich mit dem zehnten und letzten Stempel schließlich bereit erklären, den eigenen Körper freiwillig der Wissenschaft oder, wovon man im Regelfall ausgehen dürfe, der Futtermittelindustrie – Pedigree Pal – zur Verfügung zu stellen. „Keine Leistung mehr ohne Gegenleistung“, das sei das christliche Grundprinzip demokratischer Unions-Politik, so Gräff mit einem Lächeln im Gesicht. Das gebe dann endlich auch all den Armen und Bedürftigen im Land ihre Würde zurück. Denn alles sei freiwillig. Wer essen wolle, spende eben seine Organe – aber niemand werde dazu gezwungen!

Doch das ist lange noch nicht alles: Um den Haushalt weiter zu entlasten, hat die CDU noch weitere Konzepte in der Schublade. So sollen ab 2020 Rentner, die es nicht geschafft haben, bis zu ihrem 70. Lebensjahr zu sterben, keine Rente mehr bekommen. Sie müssten begreifen, dass es irgendwann auch mal gut sei, so ein Sprecher der Christlichen Union, der sogar fordert, das alte Lied von Udo Jürgens umzutexten auf: „Mit 66 Jahren da hört das Leben auf.“

Einwände gegen diese drastischen Eingriffe kamen allerdings umgehend vom ZDF, das nun um seine Kernzielgruppe fürchtet. Auch der Verband deutscher Pharmaunternehmen protestierte in einer eilig verfassten Stellungnahme. Gerade die 70- bis 90-Jährigen seien meist chronisch krank und damit eine hervorragende Einnahmequelle, auf die man in Zukunft unter keinen Umständen verzichten könne.

Und da sage nochmal einer, die Pharmaindustrie würde keine Menschenleben retten.

(Symbolbild - Pixabay) Landtagswahl: Kreiswahlausschuss tagte öffentlich in Mosbach Mosbach.  (pm) Elf Wahlvorschläge wurden vom Kreiswahlausschuss des Landtagswahlkreises 38 Neckar-Odenwald für die Landtagswahl am Sonntag, 14. März 2021 in seiner Sitzung am Dienstag zugelassen. Der Ausschuss tagte unter Beachtung der derzeit geltenden strengen Corona-Auflagen öffentlich im Landratsamt in Mosbach unter Vorsitz von Kreiswahlleiter Landrat Dr. Achim Brötel. Insgesamt wurden fristgerecht zwölf Wahlvorschläge eingereicht. Den Wahlvorschlägen der Parteien Die Linke, ÖDP, Die Partei, Freie Wähler, KlimalisteBW, W2020 und Volt mussten jeweils mindestens 75 Unterstützungsunterschriften beigefügt werden, weil diese Parteien derzeit nicht im Landtag vertreten sind. Die Parteien im Überblick: Von den eingereichten zwölf Wahlvorschlägen wurden elf Wahlvorschläge vom Kreiswahlausschuss zugelassen. Der Wahlvorschlag von Die PARTEI musste zurückgewiesen werden, da die notwendige Anzahl an Unterstützungsunterschriften nicht vorgelegt wurde.
