Stray Kids, Episode 10 (FINALE): from the start, it’s been all ours
Finale time! Our Stray Kids are nine again, and they’re about to face the fans in a live broadcast to determine their fate. The fact that we already know their fate doesn’t matter. I’m still excited. Let’s go!
We’re onstage at the CJ E&M Ilsan Studio in Seoul, the same stage we saw in the later episodes of No Mercy. We have a very intense-looking host, staring down the camera like he’s challenging us to a fight. This is famous Korean broadcaster Kim Il Joong. And he is PUMPED.

He introduces JYP, who is seated at his own desk behind the crowd. Are cans of Sugar-Free Coke strategically placed on his desk? You bet your YaYaYas they are! There’s enough caffeine on his desk to keep our announcer bellowing at us for the next 90 minutes. LET’S DO THIS.

Only seven members are being introduced right now. Felix and Lee Know will have to wait. The seven walk onto the stage, and the cheers and screams are deafening. This is a huge audience.

The boys introduce themselves, and our host asks the usual questions – how do they feel, are they excited, etc. I will hand it to Kim Il Joong. He’s a confident host. In almost every finale recap I’ve done, the hosts are rattled to be doing a live show. They give us long, awkward pauses and nervous ad-libs. But Kim Il Joong owns this stage.
It also helps that this finale is only 90 minutes long and not the four-hour slog we’ve been getting from survival shows lately. We also won’t be getting long, drawn-out reveals of the winners, since we already know who our group is. We just need to know if we’re getting seven or nine members. This is a huge relief. My last finale recap was Debut’s Plan, and my legs kept falling asleep.

Bang Chan chats with the host, and I can’t imagine what’s going through his mind right now. When it’s I.N’s turn to speak, the audience screams get loud again. Our maknae remains a fan favorite to this day.
After the group does their individual introductions, JYP takes the mic. I can’t really focus on what he’s saying, because all I can think about is that the Cola-Cola people are geniuses. The entire set is black and everyone is wearing black, so those bright red Coke cans really stand out. Well played, Coke. You got Mnet to color-coordinate their entire set with your product.

Back to our host. He asks the crowd, “Do you want seven members?” I fully expect the room to go silent. But no. The crowd cheers. Then he asks if they want nine members. The crowd cheers. This is just like the concert mission. He could ask them if they want to debut a ham and swiss on rye, and they’d cheer. I feel like I’m watching an episode of Black Mirror. Voting is now open, so the fans can text either “7” or “9” to Mnet.
While the fans decide, we watch a montage of all the top moments from the show. The showcase against 2TEAM. The Hellevator music video. The battle with YG. I’ve really enjoyed this series. It’s been fast-paced and well edited. I wish survival reality shows were still like this.
The seven group members get into formation on the stage to perform “YAYAYA.” They’ve been struggling to put this choreo together after Felix was eliminated. Let’s see how it turns out.

With the dark stage and strobe lighting, it’s really hard to get clear screenshots. Interestingly, I don’t see them attempt the dance move that made Felix almost fall. JYP doesn’t address it. He doesn’t seem blown away by the performance, but he tells them they did well. I have a hunch he’s already decided he wants the nine-member group and is saving his enthusiasm for that performance.
We get a flashback to the writing and recording of “Young Wings,” and now, our still-seven group will perform it onstage.

I like this song a lot. It’s a break from the dark edginess of their usual songs and gives us something that soars. I look forward to hearing the version that includes our two missing group members.
Kim Il Joong is still killing it as the host, by the way. He has great chemistry with the audience and is only occasionally glancing at his notecards. I’ve seen finale hosts on other shows with their eyes glued to the notecards like they’re reading ransom demands.
JYP is more enthusiastic about this performance and singles out Seungmin for praise. He also tells Hyunjin that his rapping has greatly improved. Hyunjin has finally overcome his enunciation problem.
Finally, our host mentions Felix and Lee Know. We get a flashback of their eliminations, because reliving past trauma is always fun. Now it’s time to find out what they’ve been up to since they were eliminated.

We start with Lee Know, who’s been reporting to the practice rooms every day and working hard. He hasn’t taken a single day off since he was cut from the group. He’s been working with a vocal coach, focusing mostly on singing, wanting to show improvement to JYP.

Now for Felix. He’s been studying Korean nonstop and drinking Coke with the label facing camera. He hasn’t been gone from the group that long, so I don’t know how much better he could get, but he’s been studying with teachers and practicing on his own. When he’s asked in a confessional if he’s improved, he admits he’s still lacking. I studied Spanish for several years and still struggle with it. I can’t imagine the pressure he’s under.
We now return to the live broadcast. Felix and Lee Know join the rest of the group, and the crowd goes wild. They’re pretty much always going wild, so I don’t know if it’s because of our returning bandmates or if they just got a text saying Lotte World Mall is having a sale, but whatever makes them happy is fine with me.
Our host talks with our new arrivals and tells us that Felix’s pronunciation is more clear. Now it’s time for our full team of nine to perform “Hellevator.”

This performance has much better energy with all nine of them, and the stage doesn’t feel as empty. As I predicted, JYP is more enthusiastic with his feedback.
Now our host tells us we’re going to see how the voting is going so far. It’s 96% in favor of the 9-member group. Our Stray Kids look happy, but all I can think is that four percent actually voted to kick Felix and Lee Know back to the curb. I need to speak to those people. I demand to know their reasons. I’m not joking. I know this show aired several years ago. Those people still owe me an explanation.
Mnet could pretty much end the show right now. But ever the buzzkill, JYP takes the mic and says there are pros and cons to a nine-member group, and the final decision is still his. He has to be just creating drama. If he decides to go against the 96 percent, he’s going to find the JYP building burned to the ground.
Next up, a montage of behind-the-scenes clips of the show. It’s a lot of fun, goofy stuff, but I’m ready to get to the end of this and see the announcement of the final group.
Another performance. This is “School Life.”

The choreo has gotten wilder since we last saw it. It’s fun, and the crowd loves it, but I’m glad the performances are over. No, wait. We now see video footage showing that the boys have written yet another song to perform at this finale. Okay, Mnet definitely could have cut a good half hour off this episode.
The song is about anger. It’s called “Law of Total Grrr.” They perform it, it’s great. It sounds like metal-inspired hip-hop. Felix raps in his deep voice. The dancing is wildly aggressive. When they finish, they are gasping for breath and drenched in sweat.
JYP really likes the song and compliments them on their writing and production. He does tell Lee Know and Felix that they aren’t performing up to their full potential, but I still think he’s trying to create suspense about his final decision.
The performances should be done. Now Kim Il Joong has a surprise for us. It’s a special guest. It’s Jun K from 2pm. Okay, I like 2pm, but what is he doing here?
Turns out he’s here to perform a song for us. Right. But why?

He sings his song and leaves. I sit blinking at the screen. Back in the Wild Idol finale, Kim Jong Wan from the group Nell performed, but he was one of the coaches and judges and had written a song specifically for the finalists. I know Jun K was one of the mystery listeners at the busking mission, but that doesn’t explain … you know what? Never mind. We’re almost at the end.
The audience members are waving little banners with their favorite Stray Kid on them, and I have to wonder if Felix had any say on this one. Seriously, was this the best picture they could find of him?

Oh wait, Jun K’s still here. He greets the audience. Our host tells him that because he was a mystery listener, he must feel like he has a special relationship with Stray Kids. I actually snorted with laugher. It was Jun K’s feedback after that concert that led to Felix being eliminated. That is one hell of a special relationship. Is Jun K the one who picked out that picture of Felix for the banner, too?
Now Jun K leaves to go backstab some other group, and our host announces the end of voting. We are about to hear the final results. But of course, we have to drag this out. The group members express their thanks to JYP and ask him to please vote for nine members. JYP’s expression is unreadable.
While we’re waiting for the voting results, I want to give a huge shout-out to Kim Il Joong for being the best finale host ever. He should be required by law to host all K-pop survival show finales. The Boys Planet finale would have been over in half the time. This man runs a tight ship.

Seriously. This guy RULES.
Okay, now for the final voting results. It remains 96% to 4% in favor of the full nine. That four percent should have been given a comments section to explain themselves.
Now it’s time for JYP to announce his decision. But first, we have to make Lee Know and Felix stand on their own platform in the middle of the stage like they’re on trial for witchcraft.

I can’t believe they have to stand there after everything they’ve already been through on this show. I’m a little worried about Lee Know. He looks like he might pass out.

JYP starts off by making it sound like he’s decided on seven. He says he understands the voters’ point of view, implying that he’s not going to go along with them. His voice even sounds regretful. He then starts telling us about his pet dogs. Settle in folks. This may take a while.
He says that no matter how well he trains his dogs, they still sometimes poop in the house. Great. We’re at a glamorous K-pop finale, and now everyone is picturing dog poop. JYP must be fun at dinner parties.

He finally says, “Congratulations. Stray Kids will be nine members.” I can’t get screenshots of the group’s immediate reactions because the strobe lights are going insane. But everyone is hugging and crying, and the audience is losing its mind.

Our group members stammer out words of thanks to everyone. We get a touching moment when Bang Chan thanks the other members for coming along with him on this project. They really did take a leap of faith.

JYP gives another long explanation about why he made his decision, but I think we’re done here.

This finale aired almost eight years ago. Over these past eight years, Stray Kids have sold over 31 million albums and endorsed everything from clothing to cosmetics to electronics to Minute Maid drinks. (Coca-Cola owns Minute Maid.) Tommy Hilfiger dressed them for the Met Gala in 2024. They are known as the Donation Idol Group for their charitable causes. They’ve toured the world four times.
And Bang Chan dropped Felix’s egg. That’s still my favorite of their YouTube clips.

Until the next recap project, cheerio, mates!

it's time for weekly fic recs! am i ignoring responsibilities to do this? YES! am i happy about that? YES! every week i post the top 3 (to me) fics from my favorite authors. always check out their masterlists/works because there is always more quality stuff to read! always read the tags first, and remember that being mean to them gets you blocked immediately because it is free to just not say anything at all!
this week the focus is on @t-boyeddie! cj is the absolute king of soft steddie. i don't know anyone else who makes them so, so soft in every version, in every situation. even when there's trouble, they're so soft. they're soft apart, they're soft together, and it's a breath of fresh air to see such lovely things for our boys.
cj's tumblr | cj's ao3
silent spark Rated G | 4,190 words DEMISEXUAL AND DEMIROMANTIC STEVE!!!! It's inspired by Animal Crossing (I am not familiar but I know most people are and will love that) and it's just so cute!!!! Favorite part: Eddie wants to kiss him. This isn't a new development, but it's a thought that's growing more and more persistent the longer he stands and stares, pure longing and want flowing through his veins and making his heart ache. He wishes he could freeze time, just for a moment, to keep this Steve preserved so he can stay this happy forever.
the magic that we'll feel is worth the lifetime Rated M | 7,752 words They're so in LOVE your honor. This tells so much of a story, like truly feels like a 20k fic in under 8k. It's beautiful and really showcases the love that they have for each other with a hint of spice. Favorite part: “I lov-” Before he can finish, Eddie pulls him into his arms and Steve clings to his back, hands fisting in his letterman as he cries into his neck, shoulders shaking. Eddie’s holding him tight and rubbing his back, swaying gently like he’s rocking him. He can feel the breath of his words in his ear but he can’t hear him over the music. Eddie must realize that because he pushes Steve back a bit, and he sees the tears in Eddie’s own eyes, along with the softest smile he’s ever given him.
constant, pleasure Rated E | 3,003 words It's rare that CJ explores smut, but when he does *joseph quinn blowing into mic emoji*. Also Appalachian Eddie lives on and in this house we love and respect Appalachian Eddie. Favorite part: LITERALLY THE ENTIRE THING. But I will say, Eddie calling Steve 'Dove' sent me through quite a comical physical reaction.

Do you feel as though the Hip-hop industry in Korea is getting saturated, especially with Smtm, and now the new show that Superbee is having? I don't know about all these new rappers, trappers or "singing rappers", everything new just feels so not genuine, the beats are the same and the lyricism is really downgraded. I feel like the Korean public (not the Hip-hop heads in Hipgal or other Hiphop forums) have like changed the entire image of it. But I wanna hear what you have to say about it!!
The general public is always gonna change the hip-hop. It's another issue with capitalism. Any time people start making money or a living off art, they will have to go with what the market wants at a given time or risk not making any money from it.
This is the same thing that people say about Hip-Hop in general.
I don't particularly care that hip-hop changes over time cause I'm not a SUPER hip-hop purist. I understand that hip-hop is a culture and culture is SUPPOSED to change and evolve over time. The only time culture stops (or should stop) is when the people who invented it are dead or decided they no longer have a use for it for whatever reason (in real life the process can be a bit different but that's a whole sociology and/or cultural anthropology lesson and we won't do that at the moment lol).
I do like some trap or some singing rap cause I LOVE genre fusions and crossovers (reason why I love Changmo and when artists put violins or other classical music influences on their hip-hop songs). However, when something like SMTM10 happens where damn near ALL of the songs where clearly just an attempt at doing really pop-y stuff to chart + make money off streams? That's a bit much. But AGAIN, I know their reasoning for doing that was to recuperate MONEY that was likely lost during the pandemic (as well as to give away bigger prizes) ! SMTM songs chart ANYWAY but I guess they wanted even MORE attention from the general public (I think I've heard that the GP and casual fans are actually more profitable. Hardcore fans will buy everything you put out BUT since there's more casuals + GP it's just a larger pool of money even if they only stream 1 thing or buy one album). Someone a few days ago even noted that it seemed like the ads got more blatant this season (IDK if that was you or not).
One thing I CAN say that I'm proud of the KHH scene for, is that actual hip-hop artists own most of the labels (or AT LEAST a chunk of a share in the company like Jay Park did). So most rappers (non-idols) are signed under actual rappers. One thing that is a big regret in Hip-hop (at least in the Black community) is that a lot of hip-hop is owned by white record execs so they can control the creativity and direction of hip-hop. Rappers like Lou the Human (now Lou from Paradise as he refuses to use the old name anymore. I'm not sure if the label owns it now or if he just doesn't want that name going into the next chapter of life with him since it is associated with that label), have said that they wanted him to pee on a black baby doll just to drum up controversy (as well as other things).
Since KHH rappers are involved still, they still have a certain level of control. But honestly, I feel like KHH is STILL pretty damn new. Even hip-hop in general is still "technically" younger than our grandparents for the most part but Korean hip-hop even younger than that. I hope they don't sell off the labels. Looking back, that CJ E&M acquisition of AOMG and Hi-Lite should have been a lot scarier to me but I was mostly fine with it for the increased reach. You live and you learn of course. As we're seeing now with MKIT/UNCUT, it's really dangerous for people who barely give a shit about hip-hop outside of money to get involved. So I can see why people don't like mnet or SMTM at all.
HOWEVER, I feel like as long as the rappers keep CONTROL of the labels (as well as their masters and everything on the business end), then SMTM staying or going can't control the future of KHH. Especially since the rappers technically have the means to make their own show that people would watch in the absence of SMTM.
BUT then the rappers themselves have to be trustworthy too. Cause what happens when there's a company who wants to buy your label for a large sum of money? Are you gonna take it and let them take over khh or will you stand firm?
My final thoughts are that the artists should get their money out of mnet and SMTM while it's still profitable and still a thing but never trust mnet + producers/staff that much. It seems like people in KHH have kinda already figured that out at this point now which is why the artists don't do stuff to fuck up their image or take the series that seriously any more. And you have people saying "FUCK SMTM" outright (dok2 literally said it in one of his songs MADE for the SHOW! Which means they ended up PAYING him for that! LOL King shit!) and/or throwing their chains from past seasons into lakes (Hongwon). SMTM will eventually start to lose viewers and fade out like EVERY show ever (seems like the survival show bubble is gonna burst eventually). And when that happens, mic swag, dingo, yng&rich records, and everybody else in KHH should be ready to pick up with new ideas and things fans wanna see. It's clear Super Bee is fine being a direct competitor with SMTM which is why he's having this survival show.
BUT on the fan side, we also need to make sure we are hyping up these shows that are non-SMTM as well which we do. We come out in droves to watch them.
BUT they have to be professionally run, they have to be PROMOTED so we know when and where to watch, AND the show can't just die out randomly without talking about winners/other contestants and/or having another season. Also, wouldn't hurt to have subs. CLEARLY international fans are watching by the THOUSANDS. CLEARLY y'all sell tickets when you're on world tours so ????

Soloists
And with this post, we have arrived at the end of this blog. NOTE: I will list artists who are NOT part of any group at the moment. With that being said, artists like MAMAMOO's Hwasa or EXO's Baekhyun won't be on the list.
Sunmi

Sunmi is a soloist under MakeUs Entertainment. She was part of the iconic girl group Wonder Girls under JYP Entertainment. They debuted in 2007 and disbanded in 2017. Sunmi debuted solo in 2014 with the song called "Full Moon".
After the disbandment of Wonder Girls, Sunmi left JYP and joined MakeUs Entertainment. Her 2017 comeback with "Gashina" was one of the most iconic things. "Gashina" quickly became one of the biggest hits, and she won numerous awards with it.
I first saw Sunmi at the 2017 MAMA awards when she performed "Gashina" with Taemin, and I was immediately drawn to her. Ever since then, she is my favorite solo artist.
Chungha

Chungha is a soloist under MNH Entertainment. She was part of the project girl group I.O.I under YMC Entertainment and CJ E&M. They debuted in 2016 and disbanded in 2017. Chungha debuted solo in 2017 with the song called "Why Don’t You Know".
Queen (Kim) Chungha is one of the biggest surprises of the K-Pop industry. After I.O.I disbanded, most of the members were getting ready to debut in new a group, but MNH announced that Chungha would debut as a solo artist. A lot of people had doubts and said that she isn't good enough to do it on her own. Damn, they were wrong. As of now, she is one of the most famous solo artists in South Korea and keeps breaking records with every single one of her comebacks.
Jessi

Jessi is a soloist under P Nation. She debuted as a soloist in 2005 under YMC Entertainment with the song called “Get Up”.
Jessi is the perfect example that you should never give up. This girl has been in the business for over 10 years, but she never had that big breakout up until this year. Jessi was born in the US and only moved to Korea when she was 15. She has darker skin than most Koreans, so she was a target of racism and discrimination a lot of times. YMC Entertainment never knew how to promote her right, but thankfully she left them in 2019 and joined PSY's company where she finally got her opportunity to shine. Her song "NUNU NANA" is one of the biggest hits this year and hasn't left the Melon Top 10 chart since it was released back in July.
HyunA

HyunA is a soloist under P Nation. She was part of the iconic girl group 4Minute under Cube Entertainment. They debuted in 2009 and disbanded in 2016. HyunA debuted solo in 2010 with the song called "Change".
After the disbandment of 4Minute, the Queen of breaking stereotypes, HyunA stayed with Cube Entertainment. Everything was ok until 2018, when it was confirmed that she, and fellow Cube mate, Edawn has been dating since 2016, which was against the company's rules. They both got kicked out of Cube and signed with P Nation. They both have been releasing music and living their lives happily ever after. In final conclusion, fuck Cube. Idols are humans too.
IU

IU is a soloist under EDAM Entertainment. She debuted as a soloist in 2008 under LOEN Entertainment with the song called “Good Day”.
IU aka the Nation’s Singer and Actress.
Hyolyn
Hyolyn is a soloist under her own company, Brid3. She was part of the iconic girl group SISTAR under Starship Entertainment. They debuted in 2010 and disbanded in 2017. Hyolyn debuted solo in 2013 with the song called "One Way Love".
CL
CL is a soloist under her own company, Very Cherry. She was part of the iconic girl group 2NE1 under YG Entertainment. They debuted in 2009 and disbanded in 2016. CL debuted solo in 2013 with the song called "The Baddest Female".
CL, the one and only baddest female. Or as she said in “HWA”: C to the L, the Godmother of Korean Culture.
The most iconic woman in Korean music. I hate YG so much for holding her back for years. Thank God, she's free now and I can't wait for her debut album.
SOMI

Somi is a soloist under The Black Label. She was part of the project girl group I.O.I under YMC Entertainment and CJ E&M. They debuted in 2016 and disbanded in 2017. Somi debuted solo in 2019 with the song called "Birthday".
Somi was supposed to debut with ITZY in early 2019, but she left JYP Entertainment in 2018 and joined YG's sublabel The Black Label to debut solo. One of the biggest mistakes in K-Pop? At first, I thought yes. I didn't think she had what it takes to be a soloist but after her first comeback this year she convinced me that she's gonna be a big star very soon.
AleXa

AleXa is a soloist under ZB Label. She debuted as a soloist in 2019 with the song called “BOMB”.
Ailee

Ailee is a soloist under her own label Rocket3 Entertainment. She debuted as a soloist in 2012 under YMC Entertainment with the song called “Heaven”.
NATTY
NATTY is a soloist under Swing Entertainment. She debuted as a soloist in 2020 with the song called “NINETEEN”.
Lee Hi

Lee Hi is a soloist under AOMG. She debuted as a soloist in 2012 under YG Entertainment with the song called “1, 2, 3, 4”.
Another perfect example of "YG wasting talent". Thank God, she's in the perfect place now at Jay Park's label.
Yezi

Yezi is a soloist under JG Star Entertainment. She was part of the girl group FIESTAR under LOEN Entertainment. They debuted in 2012 and disbanded in 2018. Yezi debuted solo in 2016 with the song called "Cider".
Youha

Youha is a soloist under Universal Music Korea. She debuted as a soloist in 2020 with the song called “Island”.
We got another example of ”YG wasting talent" at the end. Youha was part of “Future 2NE1″. They were introduced back in 2012 by YG, but never got the chance to debut. She left YG last year and debuted solo this year under Universal Music.
------
Wow, girl power at its finest. Actually, I love male artists like Baekhyun or Taemin, but since they are still part of some groups, I didn't list them here.
-----
Thank you for reading my blog! I hope you enjoyed this little K-Pop journey. And don't forget, K-Pop = life, talent, and never-ending content. Bye-bye!

Why Do J-Pop Artists Appear on M! Countdown?

While j-pop artists have never been in the habit of appearing on any of Korea’s weekly music shows, this is not to say they have never done so. They both have and do, appearing almost exclusively one one show—Mnet’s M! Countdown. Since the premiere of the show’s first episode on July 29, 2004, the show has hosted at least seven j-pop artists:
The boy group KAT-TUN performed "The D-Motion" on the July 1, 2010 episode of M! Countdown.
Tomohisa Yamashita of the boy group NEWS performed "Party Don't Stop" the February 24, 2011 episode of M! Countdown
The girl group DOMINO performed their debut song "GO GiRL" on the July 14, 2011 episode of M! Countdown
The girl group E-Girls performed "One Two Three" on Mnet's April 26, 2012 special M! Countdown! Hello Japan.
The boy group J Soul Brothers performed on Mnet's April 26, 2012 special M! Countdown! Hello Japan
The band Sekai no Owari performed "Anti-Hero" on the July 21, 2016 episode of M! Countdown.
The boy group JO1 performed "Shine a Light" on the February 28, 2021 episode of M! Countdown.
The timing of these performances was not happenstance; most served as the opening act for another, larger event.1 For example, Tomohisa Yamashita and DOMINO’s stages both preceded album releases in Korea, that the media described as “Korea debuts.”2 KAT-TUN’s performance was followed by their first Korean concert and stop on their KAT-TUN World Big Tour, while Sekai no Owari, post M! Countdown, performed at the Jisan Valley Rock Festival in Korea.3And in the case of JO1, their performance was not so much their opener as their second act. It followed their virtual concert “JO1 Live Streaming Concert Starlight Deluxe,” streamed from Korea, but was before their appearance at KCON:TACT.
Similarly, that all of these artists appeared on M! Countdown over any of the other music shows was no coincidence, but a matter of business. Mnet, much like SM Entertainment who distributed Avex’s artists in Korea, was licensing, distributing and, if some media reports are to be believed, managing j-pop groups in Korea.
Before I go any further, some clarification is in order. When I referred to Mnet above, I was not referring to Mnet-as-cable-channel, but the label behind it. Mnet-as-cable-channel (originally known as Music Network) founded in 1995 by Mediopia Technology Co. Mediaopia, in addition to operating their channel, would eventually become involved in artist management, distribution and production.
In 2006, Mediaopia would be acquired by CJ Group, and subsequently re-branded Mnet Media. Despite their new owner and name though, the label not only remained in the same business, but, in 2008, began to distribute Japanese artists, including GACKT, Morning Musume, Kumaki Anri, KAT-TUN, and Yamashita Tomohisa.4
To bring this back to the original point, many of the artists that appeared on M! Countdown did so due to this connection to Mnet-as label. Moreover by Mnet-as-label having those they distributed, and in some cases managed, perform on Mnet-as-channel’s show a secondary benefit of promoting the artists and hyping up other events.
This set-up holds true, even after Mnet Media technically ceased to exist following the 2011 restructuring on the part of their parent company, CJ E&M. Mnet, as both cable channel and label (no longer Mnet Media, but a label all the same) continued to show an interest in promoting artists from Japan, as well as, JO1 and IZ*ONE indicate, creating their own. Indeed, JO1 may be the pinnacle of what Mnet Media was trying to do all along. In licensing their own Produce show, co-managing the final group, and then promoting them to Korean audiences, on their own shows like M! Countdown, they profit on nearly every level. In Mnet’s eyes, this was certainly a win.5
Notes
Another angle, which I did not cover in this post, but from which to consider all of this is the censorship of Japanese media, including music, in Korea, as well as the gradual lifting of these restrictions. In this case, Japanese singers were not permitted to appear on Korean programs until January 1, 2004.
Stages for KAT-TUN, Domino and Tomohisa Yamashita and their timing, mirror the contemporaneous advance of k-pop groups (especially, girl groups) in Japan.
I am still trying to tease out the connection between Jisan Valley Rock Festival and Mnet, although this 2016 Korea Times article, “Jisan Valley Rock Festival kicks off Friday,” describes CJ E&M as a festival organizer.
Mnet’s relationship with Morning Musume would eventually evolve from one of mere distributor and distribute, to a more active partnership as I detailed in a post about the Mnet x Tsunku survival show. Much as with Produce and Girls Planet participants, the survival show’s participants also performed on an episode presumably to promote the show.
For the record, I am against all survival shows. Yes, all of them.

COLLA3ORATE PROJECT: MAY
Note: This month, idols in all six songs will be either preparing for their song’s release or promoting their song. All idols will also be participating in recording a special physical-only bonus track.
Those involved in this month’s schedule may earn up to 5 points total for writing, by the end of June 15 KST (for each song schedule they are a part of):
A solo para of 400+ words based on their May schedule for the COLLA3ORATE project this month (3 points).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their May schedule for the COLLA3ORATE project this month (2 points).
These do not count toward monthly limits or toward normal schedule points.
LOVE & LIVE:
For the beginning of the month, the members of the song (@fmdyoohyeon, @fmdhaseo, @fmdsiyeon, @fmdxsuwei) will continue to have sparse rehearsals together up until the release of their song on May 11.
On May 12, the members will attend The Show for their first special promotional stage. The four members will all go to the salon together early in the day before arriving at the SBS studio. They will be granted a waiting room of their own up until they pre-record their stage a few hours before broadcast time. They will not stay around for the live broadcast of the show (unless they have other schedule reasons to do so).
The members will repeat this schedule for all music shows on the 13-18 as well.
During their promotions, each idol will also be guided to take a number of selfies that will be chosen from by staff as photo cards for the physical mini-album for the COLLA3ORATE project.
During their promotion period, the four idols will be informed that they have one more song to record — a special bonus track that will only be available on the physical version of the mini-album all of the singles will be released on. All that is required of them is to record their assigned parts, as there will be no promotions or other activities for these “secret” b-side tracks. The idols will be given the demo beforehand and will be scheduled to record one day out of May 20, May 25, or May 31 depending on schedules (the day is up to the mun as long as the muse is in Seoul on the chosen date!). Line distribution for this track can be found here.
End note: This month, no part of their schedule (other than music show stage filming) will have cameras present.
GO:
For the beginning of the month, the members of the song (@fmdyuanjun, @fmdjaeyeol, @fmddaisuke, @dawonfmd, @fmdxiwon) will continue to have sparse rehearsals together up until the release of their song on May 20.
On May 13, all idols performing in the song will fly out very early morning KST to California to shoot the music video for “Go” in Los Angeles. Members are encouraged to sleep on the plane ride, as they will begin shooting as soon as they arrive. The music video shoot will be a two day shoot over May 13 and May 14, before the members fly out back to South Korea late May 14/early May 15 for a late May 15 arrival in Seoul.
On May 21, the members will attend MCountdown for their first special promotional stage. The members will all go to the salon together early in the day before arriving at the Mnet/CJ E&M studio. They will be granted a waiting room of their own up until they pre-record their stage a few hours before broadcast time. They will not stay around for the live broadcast of the show (unless they have other schedule reasons to do so).
The members will repeat this schedule for all music shows on the 21-27 as well. During their promotions, each idol will also be guided to take a number of selfies that will be chosen from by staff as photo cards for the physical mini-album for the COLLA3ORATE project.
The week before their promotion period, the seven idols will be informed that they have one more song to record — a special bonus track that will only be available on the physical version of the mini-album all of the singles will be released on.
End note: This month, behind the scenes content at the music video shoots will be filmed for an M/V filming video. No other part of their schedule (other than music show stage filming) will have cameras present.
DRIP:
On May 3, all idols (@fmdhyejun, @fmdchaesoo, @fmdjynx, @fmdxlux, @fmdxyoungjoo) chosen will be scheduled to be picked up in a Dimensions Entertainment van from their dorm or private residence to be driven to the Dimensions Entertainment building. Once there, they will begin to learn the choreography for the song they recorded last month. They will learn from one of Dimensions Entertainment’s dance instructors and one of the choreographers (@fmdjoohwan) will be present for roughly a half an hour to give pointers on the parts of the dance they helped with. The five idols will meet a few times throughout the month to practice together under the same circumstances of being chauffeured to the Dimensions Entertainment building together, but are expected to also practice on their personal time.
On the same day, they will be introduced to a woman named Jo Jiwon who will serve as their project group manager for this month and the next as they approach promotions. She will be with them for all schedules from this point onward unless specified otherwise.
On May 16, the project group members will be escorted to a shop in Gangnam where they will undergo fittings for the outfits they will wear in the music video and during stage performances of the song.
On May 21, the members will arrive at an indoor set to film the music video for the song.
Before they attend fittings mid-month, the idols will be informed that they have one more song to record — a special bonus track that will only be available on the physical version of the mini-album all of the singles will be released on.
End note: This month, behind the scenes content at the music video shoots will be filmed for an M/V filming video. No other part of their schedule will have cameras present.
QUIT PLAYING:
On May 1 all idols (@fmdsamsoo, @fmdtaeyong, @fmdhoon, @fmdhyunsoo, @fmdsan, @fmdjoosung) chosen will be scheduled to be picked up in a Dimensions Entertainment van from their dorm or private residence to be driven to the Dimensions Entertainment building. Once there, they will begin to learn the full original choreography for the song they recorded last month. They will learn from one of Dimensions Entertainment’s dance instructors. They will meet a few times throughout the month to practice together under the same circumstances of being chauffeured to the Dimensions Entertainment building together, but are expected to also practice on their personal time. The female backup dancers will be integrated in a later practice session in the month.
On the same day, they will be introduced to a man named Park Kyuwon who will serve as their project group manager for this month and the next as they approach promotions. He will be with them for all schedules from this point onward unless specified otherwise.
On May 20, the project group members will be escorted to a shop in Gangnam where they will undergo fittings for the outfits they will wear in the music video and during stage performances of the song.
Mid-month, the idols will be contacted either by phone or email by management to be informed that they have one more song to record — a special bonus track that will only be available on the physical version of the mini-album all of the singles will be released on.
End note: This month, no part of their schedule will have cameras present.
OH! MY MISTAKE:
All idols (@fmdsophie, @fmdsooah, @eunahfmd, @fmdyujin, @fmdyena) chosen for this song will have been informed and sent the full demo of the song on March 15.
On May 10, they will arrive separately at the Gold Star Media building to record the track. As the song will be released with Gold Star Media’s resources, most of the preparations for the song will occur at the building. This is their first time working together and the recording session will be filmed, so before they go into the studio, they will get some time to get introduced to each other. Following this short time to mingle, they will be introduced to one of the lyricists, composers, and producers of the song (@fmdjoosung) who will take some time to explain the overall concept of the song. He will then be joined by another producer and a recording engineer to help guide the recording process. The members will then go into the recording booth in the following order: main or lead vocal (chaewon), vocal (naeun), vocal (chaekyung), vocal (jinsol), vocal (rachel), and rapper (yena). All vocalists will record all vocal parts, but the producers present will focus in on parts for each idol that they determine matches their voice well to record more takes of (these parts will reflect the line distribution). The project group members will be treated to dinner by a manager all together following the wrap on recording.
On May 25, the idols will once again return to the Gold Star Media building for a concept meeting. During the concept meeting, they will be given an overview for the anticipated wardrobe and the MV storyboard in addition to more details on the overall concept of the release.
Mid-month, the idols will be informed that they have one more song to record — a special bonus track that will only be available on the physical version of the mini-album all of the singles will be released on. All that is required of them is to record their assigned parts, as there will be no promotions or other activities for these “secret” b-side tracks. Line distribution for this track can be found here.
End note: This month, the studio recording for the single will be filmed. No other part of their schedule will have cameras present.
SOSO:
All idols (@durifmd, @fmdyunseo, @fmdhanjae, @fmdmaverick) chosen for this song will have been informed and sent the full demo of the song on March 15.
On May 22, they will arrive separately at the Gold Star Media building to record the track. As the song will be released with Gold Star Media’s resources, most of the preparations for the song will occur at the building. This is their first time working together and the recording session will be filmed, so before they go into the studio, they will get some time to get introduced to each other. Following this short time to mingle, they will be joined by one of the composers/producers (@fmdxyoungjoo) and another producer and a recording engineer to help guide the recording process. The members will then go into the recording booth in the following order: main or lead vocal (yoon), vocal (jinu), rapper (mino), and rapper (hoony). All vocalists will record all vocal parts and all rappers will record all rap parts, but the producers present will focus in on parts for each idol that they determine matches their voice well to record more takes of (these parts will reflect the line distribution). The four idols will be treated to dinner by a manager all together following the wrap on recording.
On May 30, the idols will once again return to the Gold Star Media building for a concept meeting.
Line distribution for this track can be found here.
End note: This month, the studio recording for the single will be filmed. No other part of their schedule will have cameras present.
Final note: No one is required to write about or acknowledge the bonus tracks and their recording but if, for some reason, you would like your muse(s) removed from said track(s), please let the admin know. Lines were divided as equally as possible while still maintaining a realistic flow within song sections.

Hello. Do you perhaps know the reason why SM's artists don't perform on MNET M!Countdown anymore? And Baekhyun won't perform on Music Core?
From my understanding, Music Core wasn’t on this week due to a live baseball game broadcast. As for why SM artists don’t perform on MCountdown, I believe the rumor is that there is bad blood between SM and MNET/CJ E&M for a variety of reasons resulting in either SM boycotting the show or MNET not inviting SM artists onto the show.

whats ur opinion on rappers these days coming from silver spoon backgrounds? honestly it irks me just as much to see rich highschoolers get signed to labels for their trendy raps its like seeing idol rappers take their place in the khiphop scene, i know khiphop isnt revolved around the struggle as much as the origin of hiphop is but it just doesnt sit right with me, especially seeing that vid of the h1gher kids talking bout their childhood next to those black kids their age just made me realize
(anon from before) and seeing the amount of bias against underground rappers w no background in the industry in shows like hsr and smtm just solidified this thought, its crazy how the first seasons of those shows gave benefits to actual struggling rappers, now we have rich kids clowning on tv, ceo's auditioning and they get the attention over the rappers trying to make ends meet. honestly i get why rapheads and casual fans in korea get nicknamed ''8th grader syndrome'' now, its not real or raw
The thing about Khiphop, is that it's different socioeconomic wise. MULTIPLE people in Khiphop come from privileged if not just regular middle class families. Quite a few of them are college educated. Many more went to fancy high schools at least, even if they didn't attend college or they dropped out of school.
In the US, this is the opposite. I feel like only a handful come from the middle class (lower and "middle" middle class tbh) and there's pretty much NONE (that I know of) who come from affluent or well off families.
Even those "struggling" rappers are not necessarily "struggling" they are just struggling in MUSIC! SMTM2 literally had a contestant that was a corporate worker at Mnet or CJ E&M (can't remember which). Also, Basick had a corporate job as well so I'm assuming he has some type of degree.
I feel like in Korea it's somewhat of a privilege to be able to to do rap. Whereas in the US it's considered something you do to "make it out the hood". The way out of poverty in Korea is probably going to university and getting a corporate type job. In the US (at least for Black people) it's becoming an athlete or entertainer. (Not to say Black people don't look at college/university as a way to make it out of poverty but I'm just alluding to things people commonly say in rap/hip-hop songs as well as a few popular memes).
I'm not saying there isn't more economically disadvantaged people in Khiphop cause there is. Kid Milli, (allegedly*) Changmo, Dok2 (probably the MOST economically disadvantaged I've heard of) all struggled economically even BEFORE adulthood. Specifying WHEN a rapper "struggled" is important. Because being a poor young adult is not the same as growing up poor or starting from the bottom to me LOL. A lot of rappers who are "poor" and struggling in KHH right now, I suspect its because they left home specifically to be rappers but their parents would definitely give them an allowance and/or let them live at home if they went out looking for work or went to college. Some even would still support them if they are rappers/entertainers lol. (NOTE: Some of the rappers probably left home due to a bad relationship with parents though. So I'd argue that that counts as being disadvantaged "for real").
All that said, I personally don't really mind. I don't feel like struggle has to be an inherent part of making hip-hop. At least not at this point in it's evolution. The thing that bothers me is when people FAKE a struggle. Like why are rappers from the good parts of town and/or who went to fancy high schools or colleges faking like they struggled so much and they are so "hood" and "ghetto"? LOL
*allegedly because I don't 100% believe a kid who was doing piano lessons and competitions since he was 5 was all that disadvantaged. Sounds like middle to upper class type shit. But since he may have been middle class and everyone else upper, he may have FELT like he was economically challenged even if he wasn't actually LOL. Maybe he was on scholarships/grants? Or maybe his parents scraped up what little money they could to make sure he could still do music? IDK
