One of the simplest things you can do to protect your health is to keep track of indoor air quality. Viruses spread through the air and accumulate in spaces that are poorly ventilated. By opening a window or running on an air purifier you can reduce your risks of catching an airborne virus. While viruses spread most during the winter, some viral illnesses like COVID are present all year round, and can cause serious short and long-term health issues. This post explains how monitoring and improving indoor air quality can help protect your health through all the seasons.
Viruses can spread through the air at long distances Viruses spread through droplets and smaller particles called aerosols that are expelled by someone who has an infection. This can happen in a number of ways including coughing, sneezing, talking, or simply breathing. The highest risk of catching a virus is when you are close to the source, where there is a greater concentration of droplets and aerosols.
Viruses can also infect people from larger distances because viruses trapped in aerosols can linger in the air for hours, like cigarette smoke. When a room is poorly ventilated, aerosols accumulate, increasing your risk of catching the virus and getting sick, even if you are not standing close to someone who is infected.

Illustration of how droplets and aerosols released during talking can transmit viruses if the person is infected. (Source: J Hosp Infect)
COVID spreads throughout the year Many respiratory virus illnesses like the flu spread predominantly during winter, because they can survive longer in cold and dry conditions, and because people are more likely to gather inside in poorly ventilated rooms during the colder months.
However, COVID can surge throughout the year. COVID peaks occur regularly because the coronavirus that causes COVID is extremely contagious; new variants can emerge quickly; and immunity from previous infections and vaccinations decreases over time. COVID usually surges in winter and summer, however the virus can circulate at high levels at any point during the year.
COVID still causes serious illness While things are different than in 2020 when COVID first appeared, COVID hasn’t gone away. In many countries, COVID is still the most deadly infectious disease. And COVID infections continue to cause long-term health issues for many people.
Anyone who gets COVID can develop Long COVID. Although people with severe initial infections are most likely to develop Long COVID, you can get Long COVID even after a mild initial infection.
Because coronaviruses mutate quickly, you can be reinfected with another variant as early as several weeks after you have gotten COVID. Reinfections can occur multiple times, and the more reinfections you have increases your risk of developing long-term health issues.
People with Long COVID can experience a wide variety of symptoms that can last weeks, months, or years after the initial infection. COVID can increase the risk of developing new conditions or worsen pre-existing ones including heart disease, diabetes, blood clots, neurological conditions, and chronic fatigue.
Even being sick with COVID in the short term is disruptive because most people are infectious with COVID for at least 10 days. That can mean missing days of work, family time, or an important social event.
Simple things you can do to avoid COVID The best way of reducing your risk of developing long-term health issues from COVID is by taking a few simple steps to prevent getting COVID in the first place.
Staying up to date with the latest COVID vaccine reduces your risk of serious illness, infection, and Long COVID. Wearing a mask helps boost your own protection, protects others around you, and works against any COVID variant or other type of airborne virus.
Another effective way to reduce your risk of getting sick from airborne viruses is to improve indoor air quality.
Tracking air quality can help reduce your risk of sickness You can track air quality with a carbon dioxide monitor. When we breathe, we expel carbon dioxide molecules, which accumulate in rooms that are poorly ventilated. A high carbon dioxide reading means that you are likely breathing in a large percentage of recirculated air. If that air contains viruses, that puts you at greater risk of getting sick.
With this knowledge you can take steps to reduce your risk. This can be as easy as opening a window to allow particles with viruses to escape and fresh air to come in. If opening a window isn’t possible, HEPA purifiers or Far-UVC Light systems can help remove particles with viruses from the air.
To learn more about how carbon dioxide monitors can help reduce your risk of getting sick from viral illnesses, watch this video.

Just got the Shit fucking scared outta me. From my smoke detector. I was kinda falling asleep on the couch when it went off Full Volume for 3 beeps... just 3 beeps. Nothing else...? Usually it chirps if it's low battery, so I looked online and it's saying it's possible it was like. Dust or something like that. More sensitive at night, apparently. Advised me to maybe clear the thing & call the landlord if it does it again. Or something.
I swear to God tho the way that thing jolted me outta my sleep, I was literally trembling from it. Bad. Still kinda am. What a rude fuckin awakening.
#speculation nation#like damn i didnt need to fall asleep on the couch yeah but i also didnt deserve THIS#i think it was just like. a shot of pure adrenaline. to a falling asleep mind. not pleasant.#i was like. when i first jolted up i was legit contemplating grabbing my machete bc i didnt know WHAT was going on#but no intruder... it's fine... everything is calm... nothing smells of smoke...#i was scared of it maybe being co2 but this is not a co2 detector. just a smoke detector.#my actual co2 detector is sitting calmly down in its normal spot. nothing.#god. im still rattled from that. i really did not appreciate that.#scared the shit outta my cats too. god damn.

speaking of giant meteors...
(not fandom-related by fandom adjacent, involves some writing stuff):
I'm in the writing program at Second City, and we're putting together our grad show (which is virtual! so in theory anybody can make it). The teacher selected the final sketches from all the work we've done over several terms. He selected two of my scenes:
one of my scenes was about a failed grocery shopping trip (which had unintentional but obvious OPM vibes), and that actually got used in our audition packet which was really cool
the second scene he selected was about a questionable medium and their "mystic fishbowl" that allegedly provided visions of the past and future. It has some Mob Psycho elements going, but it was mostly inspired by a Past Life Regressions workshop I attended with my mom. It was supposed to be about (white) people doing spiritualism badly, but the teacher really liked the idea of someone coming to a psychic for comfort and learning that all he's ever done was die in infancy, which was part of the original joke--assuming we did have accurate past life readings, most of them would be boring, and probably short. Anyway, I wrote the scene and I have mixed feelings about it, and also I needed a new ending (in the original version, the medium learns she can't actually communicate with ghosts, she just has co2 poisoning and the only message from beyond is 'check your fucking carbon monoxide detector!', but I think it would also be neat to do a reverse Scooby Doo, like 'you're right! I'm not a white, upper-class capitalist! I'm actually a ghost--and I would have gotten away with it, too, if not for you meddling kids!') anyway it doesn't matter because I have a new running joke, and the joke is "this character keeps dying" and if that's the joke, well, there's really only one way to end the scene. Oh, and also, this 'fishbowl of misery' psychic reading is all being done over Zoom--
#my writing#wilf#non fandom#non fandom but#if you're following this blog you're probably my target audience#i also had to change this character's name and it made me sad#selim is my self insert character#i made her for werewolf the apocalypse she's basically me in my twenties in an au where i can shapeshift into a monster sometimes#and she wanted to pick a more werewolf-like name but thought 'selene' was too cliche so she picked this one#bc she's also a weeb and selim is the fuhrer's son in fma#but it's also a male turkish name and i didn't want to give the wrong impression#really she's just an impulsive kid that can't identify a co2 detector and is too afraid to ask#and is willing to ignore increasingly severe co2 poisoning symptoms because what if THIS TIME IT'S ACTUALLY A GHOST#btw most people who think they are haunted have co2 problems and not ghosts

In this housing market? I can get a CO2 alarm, several salt canisters, and plenty of sage for under $100 if the ghosts need to be evicted. Havaheart traps for squirrels in the attic are pretty cheap too, compared to a whole ass house.
But, I have managed to work at several haunted places others refused to work, by being polite but firm to the ghosts, the same as anyone else. Got a lot of hours at easy sites that way, and I would snap up a discount haunted house in a heartbeat.

Securing Commercial Kitchens with Gas Interlock Systems
Commercial kitchens are bustling environments where safety is paramount. The risk of gas leaks and fires makes it essential to implement effective safety measures. One such critical safety device is a gas interlock system, designed to prevent dangerous situations by ensuring that ventilation systems are fully operational before gas appliances can be used.
Understanding the Functionality of Gas Interlock Systems
A gas interlock system serves as a safeguard in commercial kitchens, ensuring that gas supplies are automatically cut off if ventilation fails. This prevents the accumulation of dangerous gases and reduces the risk of fire or explosion. These systems are crucial for maintaining a safe working environment in any establishment that uses gas appliances.
The Role of Gas Interlock Panels in Enhancing Safety
At the heart of every gas interlock system is the gas interlock panel. This control panel is responsible for monitoring the status of the ventilation system and controlling the gas supply. If a fault is detected, the panel immediately shuts off the gas, preventing potential hazards. The panel’s role is vital in ensuring that the interlock system functions correctly and efficiently.
Compliance with Safety Regulations through Gas Interlock Systems
In many regions, safety regulations mandate the use of gas interlock systems in commercial kitchens. These regulations are in place to protect both staff and customers from the dangers of gas leaks and inadequate ventilation. By installing a gas interlock system, businesses can ensure they are compliant with local laws and provide a safer environment for everyone.
Key Features of Modern Gas Interlock Systems
Modern gas interlock systems are equipped with various features designed to enhance safety and functionality. These include sensors that monitor air pressure and flow, alarms that alert users to faults, and manual override functions for emergencies. These features make gas interlock systems an indispensable part of any commercial kitchen’s safety protocol.
The Importance of Regular Maintenance for Gas Interlock Systems
To ensure that a gas interlock system continues to function correctly, regular maintenance is essential. This includes checking the integrity of the ventilation system, testing sensors and alarms, and ensuring that the gas interlock panel is operating as intended. Regular maintenance helps to prevent system failures and ensures that the kitchen remains a safe environment.
Integrating Gas Interlock Systems with Other Safety Measures
While gas interlock systems are critical, they should be part of a broader safety strategy. This strategy might include fire suppression systems, regular staff training, and the use of personal protective equipment. Integrating gas interlock systems with these additional safety measures ensures comprehensive protection against potential hazards.
Choosing the Right Gas Interlock System for Your Kitchen
When selecting a gas interlock system, it is crucial to consider the specific needs of your kitchen. Factors such as the size of the kitchen, the type of gas appliances used, and local safety regulations will influence your choice. Investing in a reliable system tailored to your kitchen’s requirements ensures optimal safety and compliance.
Conclusion: Prioritize Safety with Advanced Gas Interlock Solutions

I weirdly like cotton candy. Like any time I see it i go. Oh i could really go for some cotton candy. Other than slow cooked roasted beef and those crispy cube mashed potatoes that are actually one of the greatest foods know to mortal men there aren't many foods that make my mouth genuinely water. And I feel like based only on my delusions and vibes like cotton candy like candy corn (also a food i like because give the opportunity, I would gladly eat wax) is looked down upon unjustly thought it is an incredible treat. In this essay Ted talk therapy session, I will...
(I had too much fun writing this nonsense. I do believe cotton candy is divine don't get me wrong.)

Few things have made me feel more like an adult than me finally buying a co2 detector and then struggling to figure out where to Put It, since I couldn't have it too close to the furnace or any kitchen appliances or in the humidity of the bathroom AND I didn't have any good outlets for it. Needs to be somewhere that still gets air, can't be on a power strip, etc etc. Nowhere in my room worked for it, & most places besides that were either too close to the furnace or too far to be helpful.
I ended up putting it behind the shoe rack in my entryway. Bc it'll at least still get air that way, and there's only One thing on that outlet right now. So hopefully it's fine 👍
#speculation nation#when i first got my own apartment my dad advised me to get a co2 detector. and i intended to but never did.#a few nights ago tho tally was acting weird and sniffing the air near the vents. and like it was probably a scent from a neighbor or smth#since co2 cannot be smelled. but it got me Anxious about the possibility of co2.#cause that shit kills!!! and you cant sense it yourself!!!#so now i have a little white robot that will scream at me if theres a co2 leak.#it's a little far from my room but im a light sleeper and i keep the door open at night. so itd probably still work??#honestly ive been living here for 3 years now and never had any problems with that. but idk. it only needs to happen once.#makes me feel like im maybe being paranoid. but this shit really could happen.#and unlike a fire there arent signs i can sense to alert me to a co2 leak.#so. sorry dad 😭 that it took me so long to get one. ur soul can rest easy wherever it is now tho 👍 i will not die to co2 poisoning.#hopefully!!!!!
