Well That Sucks, Thanks for the Memories
(Bonus points if you can name the anime from whose blooper reel I got the title of this post. No really - it became a part of my personal meme lexicon in the early 2000s from an anime dub blooper reel, and for the life of me I cannot remember which anime it was. Now that we've gotten the depths of my sad nerdery out of the way, let us talk about how much I suck at math.)
Like everyone else in a US high school the last week before break, I did not do much actual work the last week before break. I handed out a lot of candy canes and shelved a few books. I made a to-do list of projects that are Next Year Me's Problem. And I Googled "dyscalculia."
This isn't the first time I've looked up "dyscalculia," but it was the first time I did so on a mission: to do anything at all other than throw my hands up and go "welp, brain broken, too bad no numbers for me."
So I started looking at books and articles on dyscalculia. I read about how to build adaptation skills in kids that have it and how adults can adapt to it too. I learned that not everyone with math anxiety has dyscalculia, but everyone with dyscalculia has math anxiety.
And I learned that, with or without a numbers learning disorder, the way I was taught arithmetic was probably the worst possible approach offered in the entire previous century.
Let me back up.
The current "gold standard" for teaching math to kids is the CPA approach. It stands for Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract - the sequence by which new ideas are introduced. (It's also called the CRA approach, for Concrete - Representational - Abstract.)
Teaching a kid how to count to 10? Hand them 10 of something. Have them move the pieces around, line them up, make groups. Eventually, add pictures of groups of things (apples, kites, washed-up baseball players). Later, add the number symbols we all know and love (in the US, 1, 2, 3, and the rest of the squad).
This is the cornerstone of the Singapore method, which consistently lands Singapore's students in the top math scorers worldwide - by a lot.
Above all, this method stresses, do not withdraw concrete and pictorial representations too soon. We're hard-wired as a species to like concrete counting methods. We have ten fingers, and we use them for more than picking our noses!
Flashback to my first grade classroom.
My first grade classroom had four or five abacuses - the kind with the rainbow beads on horizontal strings. Being a child whose favorite color was "rainbow," I loved these things. I would choose them over toys during playtime.
I was not allowed to use them for math lessons.
Why? Because the abacuses were reserved "for the slower kids" (my teacher's exact words). I was "very bright"; I "just needed to apply myself."
(As a multiply-neurodivergent adult who wasn't diagnosed with any of it until adulthood and as someone who works with high schoolers every day, let me just say: the phrase "you're smart, you just need to apply yourself" should be a one-way ticket to a full LD screening. #justeducatoropinions)
I had math anxiety by the end of first grade. Because "applying myself," whatever that meant, didn't bridge that gap between the concrete and the abstract. Numbers were weird alien symbols I could decode only occasionally. Sometimes they just wouldn't talk to me. I couldn't explain why. (I was six!)
Learning at age 42 that I was systematically deprived of the tools required to succeed in math from the age of 6 is doing a number on me. On that first day, I had to take a fast three laps around the high school track to calm down before my lunch break ended.
When I got back to my desk, I of course went looking for better textbook options.
I find the artwork the Maths - No Problem! series, part of the UK National Curriculum, weirdly soothing. It's cute and friendly. And the fact that every single lesson is modeled with little cubes reassures me that no one is going to make me rely solely on those devious little "digits" until I'm good and ready.
The series is also available for free on the Internet Archive. Since I'm not looking for the best books so much as something better than I had as a kid, I've decided to start here. With Book 1A.
Let's see what happens.

What is Singapore Math?
The Singapore Math curriculum, developed in the 1980s, has earned global recognition for its structured, visual, and hands-on approach to learning math. It emphasizes conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking, setting it apart from traditional math curricula. The program integrates a “concrete, pictorial, abstract” learning approach, which ensures students grasp core concepts thoroughly before moving to higher levels of abstraction.
Core Principles of Singapore Math
Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach: This progressive method starts with concrete objects, moves to pictorial representations, and finally leads to abstract concepts. This step-by-step process helps students build a strong mathematical foundation.
Problem-Solving Focus: Singapore Math emphasizes solving complex word problems, helping students think critically and develop strategies rather than relying on rote memorization.
Mastery Over Memorization: Instead of moving quickly through topics, students focus on mastering each concept before progressing. This leads to a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics.
Bar Modeling Technique: A visual tool unique to Singapore Math, bar modeling helps students break down word problems into solvable parts, making even complex problems easier to understand.

Essential Accounting Skills Employers Look for on a Resume
Counting accounting and keeping track of it is really important in the business world. If you want to get a good job doing this, your resume should talk about some essential skills. These skills show you're not just good at math but can also understand things well and talk to others easily. Let’s read some of the essential accounting skills employers are looking for while reading a resume.
Knowing Computer Things
Recruiters like it when you know how to use computer programs, like Excel or QuickBooks. Being able to handle accounting documents is a big plus.
Thinking and Understanding
Counting accounting is about more than just writing down numbers. Recruiters like it when you can look at accounting info and determine what it means. Understanding complex things is good.
Being Very Careful

Welcome to the Other Side: A Quantitative Researcher’s Journey into Qualitative Research
One of the things I am proud of this year is my exposure to qualitative research. I am used to conducting quantitative studies, primarily action research studies and correlational studies. As someone unfamiliar with qualitative research, my goal in Methods of Inquiry 2: Qualitative Approach to Investigation (CPA 394) this semester is to be a sponge and absorb everything I can from my professor and classmates. In this entry, I will share the valuable lessons that struck me the most from CPA 394.
Summary of Research Output
The pandemic has profoundly modified the educational landscape. Studies on distance education in the context of the pandemic have uncovered multiple challenges and changes. Specific issues in Mathematics teaching include problems in preparation (Fakhrunisa & Prabawanto, 2021), complications in delivering lessons (Aldon et al., 2021), and difficulties in engaging students (Akar & Erden, 2021). Concurrently, students experienced problems related to inconsistent internet connections (Bringula, 2021) and the limitations of distance learning (Sugilar et al., 2021). In response to these challenges, Mathematics teachers have creatively strategized with the integration of technology. Math teachers use technology to develop educational materials, curate learning sessions, and monitor student learning and progress.
After a comprehensive review of related literature and studies, it became evident that a limited number of studies covered the creative strategies of Mathematics teachers during the pandemic. Most existing studies focused on the development and evaluation of instructional materials (e.g., Karmila et al., 2020; Prahmana, 2022; Nabayra, 2022). Given this research gap, the researcher intends to investigate how Mathematics teachers creatively strategize to meet the demands of pandemic teaching and learning. The researcher aims to answer the research question: How did teachers creatively strategize to deliver Mathematics learning during the pandemic?
The researcher will utilize a purposive sampling technique. A total of eight (8) Mathematics teachers will be selected as research participants from a public school. Participation will be limited to teachers who started on or before the school year 2020-2021. The present study will utilize semi-structured interviews as a data-gathering method. The researcher will develop an interview guide with two parts: an introduction and a set of interview questions. To ensure validity, the researcher will seek the assessment of three experts to evaluate the content and order of questions in the interview guide. Revisions will be made based on the comments and suggestions of the experts.
After conducting a series of interviews, the researcher will transcribe the responses of the participants using a word processor. The researcher will perform a thematic analysis using the critical realist approach of Fryer (2022). Following this approach, the researcher will assign codes to all statements with key ideas. Subsequently, the researcher will develop themes by analyzing the interconnection of the generated codes. The themes will be reported and analyzed to generate meaningful conclusions.
Salient Lessons
Lesson #1: You cannot cram the RRL
The review of related literature serves to guide researchers on the appropriate methods to employ and the pertinent questions to address. I find this section to be the most challenging, as it requires dedicated time for thorough reading. Rushing through the review is not advisable, as it can impact the understanding of the variables under study, a factor that becomes evident in the subsequent discussion.
Lesson #2: The introduction can be in the end
Before my qualitative research class, I used to write the introduction before the review of related literature. One tip that I received from my research professor is to write the introduction last. I find this tip logical because writing this section requires a full understanding of the related literature and the research gap. The introduction can be in the end.
Lesson #3: Materials matters
Research instruments matter! Researchers should implement content validation to ensure the accuracy of the interview guide in addressing the research question. Pilot interviews help improve not only the content but also the organization of the questions. Based on my experience with interview questions, they should be simple and easy to understand. The quality of interview questions defines the quality of responses that the interviewee provides.
Lesson #4: Coding is decoding
Compared to quantitative research, the role of researchers in qualitative research is more complex. The task of interpretation carries more weight for qualitative researchers. In quantitative research, significance is determined by comparing a computed value against a standard. In qualitative research, responses undergo a more tedious process involving transcription, code generation, and theme development. Coding is essentially decoding, as it is a process that involves unraveling information that is implicitly and explicitly stated.
Lesson #5: Depth not breadth
Qualitative research does not aim to generalize conclusions to a larger population; instead, it is more focused on understanding variables at a deeper level. In this type of research, depth is more important than breadth. Statistical treatments in quantitative research generate limited information about a specific variable or phenomenon. In contrast, researchers conducting qualitative research explore the domain of the real. They provide explanations about variables with causal powers.

What is the hardest CPA module?
Preparing for the CPA course is no small feat. It’s a four-part examination that tests candidates on a broad spectrum of knowledge areas essential for the accounting profession. The four sections are:
Auditing and Attestation (AUD)
Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)
Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)
Regulation (REG)
Each section presents unique challenges, but if there’s one module that consistently earns the title of “the hardest”, it’s Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR).
So, what makes FAR so difficult—and is it truly the most challenging for everyone? Let’s explore the factors that contribute to its intimidating reputation and how candidates can navigate it successfully.
Why FAR Is Considered the Hardest CPA Module
1. Massive Scope of Content
One of the main reasons FAR is regarded as the most difficult module is the sheer volume of material it covers. The FAR section includes topics such as:
Financial statements and reporting
U.S. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)
IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards)
Business combinations and consolidations
Governmental and nonprofit accounting
Leases, pensions, bonds, and more
This breadth can be overwhelming for candidates, especially those without a strong academic foundation in advanced accounting principles. Unlike other sections that hone in on specific areas (e.g., taxes in REG or auditing in AUD), FAR covers the full landscape of financial accounting.
2. Complex and Evolving Accounting Standards
In FAR, candidates are expected not only to memorize accounting rules but also to understand and apply them to real-world scenarios. These standards, especially under U.S. GAAP, can be extremely detailed and technical.
To add to the challenge, accounting standards are not static—they evolve frequently. New pronouncements from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) or changes in IFRS can appear in updated exam materials. Staying current with these changes adds another layer of difficulty to FAR preparation.
For example, recent updates to lease accounting and revenue recognition standards have required candidates to re-learn major components of the exam.
3. Heavy Emphasis on Calculations and Journal Entries
While all CPA exam sections involve some level of computation, FAR is particularly calculation-intensive. Candidates are often tested on topics such as:
Depreciation and amortization
Bond premiums and discounts
Pensions and post-retirement benefits
Inventory methods (LIFO, FIFO, weighted average)
Consolidation eliminations
Lease calculations
In addition to solving these, you must know how to journalize transactions and ensure they comply with the relevant reporting framework. This demands a mix of numerical accuracy and accounting logic—one small mistake in a calculation or journal entry can throw off the entire question.
4. Conceptual Depth and Critical Thinking
Beyond math and memorization, FAR requires candidates to understand complex accounting concepts and how they interconnect. You’re not just filling out balance sheets—you’re interpreting financial statements, analyzing transactions, and understanding how each element affects overall financial reporting.
FAR often includes task-based simulations (TBS) that present real-world financial scenarios. These require not just number-crunching, but also interpretation, analysis, and strategic thinking. Questions may ask you to prepare parts of financial statements based on incomplete data or make corrections to journal entries under changing scenarios.
This makes FAR mentally exhausting—especially under time constraints.
5. Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting
One area that catches many candidates off guard is governmental and nonprofit accounting. These topics are not heavily emphasized in many undergraduate accounting programs, which means candidates often face a steep learning curve when preparing for these segments.
Governmental accounting introduces concepts like:
Fund accounting
Modified accrual basis
Encumbrances
Government-wide vs. fund financial statements
These concepts differ greatly from standard for-profit accounting, requiring additional time and attention to master.
6. Time-Intensive Preparation
Due to the breadth and complexity of the material, FAR typically requires the most study hours of all CPA exam sections. Many candidates report spending 100 to 150+ hours preparing for FAR alone.
Balancing that level of study with work, family, or other responsibilities can be a significant challenge. It often feels like preparing for multiple mini-exams wrapped into one.
How FAR Compares to the Other Sections
To understand FAR’s difficulty better, it helps to briefly compare it with the other three CPA sections:
AUD focuses on audit procedures, risk assessment, and ethics. It requires analytical thinking but isn’t as math-heavy.
BEC includes business concepts, IT, and communication skills. It’s generally considered the most approachable and features a written component instead of extensive simulations.
REG centers on taxation and business law. While it demands memorization and legal comprehension, its scope is narrower than FAR’s.
Compared to all of these, FAR stands out for its volume, complexity, and the variety of accounting rules it tests.
Tips to Conquer FAR
Yes, FAR is tough—but it’s not unbeatable. Here are a few strategies to make your journey smoother:
1. Start Early and Plan Well
Give yourself enough time to cover all the content. Break it into manageable sections and follow a realistic schedule.
2. Master the Fundamentals
Strong foundations in basic financial accounting are critical. Don’t skip over topics you think you know—review everything.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Use multiple-choice questions and simulations from reputable review providers. Repetition helps reinforce concepts and boost confidence.
4. Focus on Weak Areas
Governmental and nonprofit accounting can be unfamiliar. Spend extra time here if you’re less confident.
5. Simulate Exam Conditions
Take full-length practice exams under timed conditions to build stamina and identify pacing issues.
6. Stay Updated
Use the most recent study materials to account for new or updated accounting standards that could appear on the exam.
Final Thoughts
So, what is the hardest CPA module? For most candidates, the answer is Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)—and it’s not hard to see why. With its immense scope, deep conceptual requirements, and rigorous technical demands, FAR often feels like the Everest of the CPA exam.
But remember, difficult doesn’t mean impossible. Thousands of candidates pass FAR every year. With the right mindset, materials, and commitment, you can too.
If you’re just starting your CPA journey, consider tackling FAR early while your university coursework is still fresh. Others prefer saving it for when they have a better grasp of the CPA exam’s format. Either approach can work—what matters most is preparation.
You’ve already made it this far. With patience and persistence, you can conquer FAR—and every other module standing between you and your CPA license.

But, knowledge the blessings of operating with a expert can make the decision lots much less complex and even ease an awful lot of the apprehension you may have approximately facing the approaching tax season.

A Hypothesis as to Why My 80s/90s K-12 Math Ed Sucked
K so today is "going down the line until someone has a spare set of tens they can loan you" subtraction. AKA problems like "300 - 214" or "4000 - 738."
As usual, I'm doing these with the unit blocks because the primary school textbook told me to:
Tumblr media
I'm also doing these with the blocks because I am historically terrible at problems that involve multiple "borrow" steps. Specifically, I can never remember when to borrow and when not.
My fifth-grade teacher once told me I'd make "a terrible banker" because "you borrow too much money!" I think he meant this as a joke. As a kid, I felt weirdly insulted; as an adult and a teacher, I wonder why he didn't do a single thing to help me stop "borrowing too much."
That specific teacher aside (he was legit bad at most aspects of teaching), using unit cubes for multiple-borrow borrowing also has me wondering: Was 80s/90s math education bad because we thought we were imitating good math education?
When the Common Core standards first dropped, the Internet was awash in examples of number lines, "counting on," and other CPA-esque methods of teaching primary math. A lot of these examples got pushback from their posters, who didn't grasp that there are many ways of thinking about numbers.
A friend of mine, a marine biologist, replied: "What most people don't get is that these Common Core examples are how people who are good at math think about math."
(Said friend was very good at math and regularly surrounded by people who are good at math, so I believe her.)
When I was taught basic math, we were deprived of concrete manipulables and even pictorial representations almost immediately. If we demonstrated that we understood what a number symbol stood for (7 = "that's a seven" *holds up seven fingers*), we were deemed "too advanced" for concrete or pictorial representations.
By the time we got to the borrow-ad-infinitum-minus-one type subtraction, most of us had had concrete tools withheld for at least two years (first and second grade) and sometimes 4-5 years.
People who are good at math can look at a problem like 4000 - 1228 and get an accurate answer fairly quickly in their heads. There are no manipulables involved and there may be no jotting answers down, either.
I'm no historian of math education, but I wonder if the prevailing hypothesis was "if people good at math can do this invisibly, then to make kids good at math we should make them do it invisibly too, and as soon as possible."
Anyway I still suck at borrowing repeatedly, so back to the clicky blocks it is for me.

Hiring The Right CPA
Tumblr media
You’re out there running a successful small business. You’re serving your customers and in return they’re rewarding you with that one thing every business needs to thrive: money.
In fact, you may have started making so much money, and your business is growing so fast that it’s time to hire someone to keep track of your money.
It might be time to hire a Certified Public Accountant.
But where do you find a qualified CPA for your small business—and how do you know you’ve found a good one?
We can point you in the right direction!
Accountants handle all the complicated and critical math behind your business, including bookkeeping, preparing financial documents like tax returns and profit-and-loss statements, and doing financial planning. Accountants are involved in planning, tracking and managing the finances of their clients.
In other words, all accountants are accountants, but not all accountants are CPAs.
And while an accountant can't make business decisions for you—after all, this is your business—an accountant can offer good advice and help you make the right decisions, as well as handle all of these tasks:
Balance financial records and check for inaccuracies
Audit individual accounts on a random or scheduled basis
Check for major financial issues
Ensure projects stay on budget
Publish audited financial statements
Work with executives and CEOs to establish budgets
Oversee Accountants and other financial professionals
Make suggestions regarding budgets and other financial decisions
Assist with external company audits
Those are just a few of the regular tasks CPAs can perform and the services they provide.
Another amazing service is to function as your company's CFO.
The chief financial officer of an organization is responsible for making sure that the finances of the company are properly handled.
Finance directors are responsible for forecasting the organization's financial position based on financial and operational data and reports provided by the finance and accounting teams and advising the CEO and board on strategy. When you engage a virtual CFO, you are getting a highly skilled and qualified CPA that has additional experience in accounting that has focused on providing high-level planning and financial advice for their clients. Virtual VFOs enable the CEO and other key players to find financial opportunities and ways to improve the bottom line.
What level of support do you need for your company?
Most growing companies could benefit greatly with the Virtual CFO model, others may just want to get themselves organized for their taxes.
Ask yourself these key questions:
Will they just handle accounting and payroll?
Do you want seasonal tax support?
Would you prefer to have access to advice and direction on demand based on your needs?
Or will you need to hire a CPA to be your full-time, in-house financial guru?
Once you’ve got that settled, it’s time to search.
There are a number of ways to find a CPA for your small business. If you say, “Hey, Siri, where can I get a CPA?” or type “small-business CPA” into Google, searching online is a great place to start looking for a CPA.
In both cases, you’ll likely be presented with a list of CPAs in your local area.
There are many ways to get this done. Which one is the best? It depends on your own preference and the quality of the service and product.
I like to use Google Search and it is the most popular method or service used. Today over 90% of all search traffic comes from Google. If you search for many terms like local CPA, or CPA near me, the results you will see first after or sometimes even before an ad is called the map pack. A map pack result starts on the main search page, showing the top 3 listed providers in the area closest to your location. Visit their Google My Business listings that power these map pack results, then also visit their website.
It’s important to make sure the person you find is actually a Certified Public Accountant. When searching, you’ll want to make sure the person you find serves clients in your area. Some CPA firms are smaller local firms, and others offer national or even global services.
When you find a CPA that serves your community, then look for one that offers the level of services you need. For Virtual CFO services, we recommend the firm Straight Talk CPAs because they have a dedicated CFO team whose focus and experience is in providing all of those next level services of a CFO. The virtual nature of the position offers your company greatly reduced costs, yet all the benefits of an in house CFO.

Bagahe Padala App [Week 11: Perspectives]
Math and numbers.
These two words are the main stars for this week. This week we crafted the Bagahe Padala App`s Revenue Model.
Along the process, the team has done a lot of revisions to come up with the perfect revenue model that fits the start up.
ZDMC decided to use the Commission Revenue Model.
Below is our business model. This a linear business model that reaches the goal of generating profit through cheap charging fee and advertisements methods.
Tumblr media
A user is charged a fee for each transaction in the commission model. It is by far the most common business strategy for an online marketplace. The marketplace receives a percentage or a fixed fee for its services when the client pays the provider. Either the customer or the consumer might be charged by the platform.
For now, Bagahe Padala App will operate free of charge and we will profit the business by taking commission rates every transaction.
We take 3% commission rate from every transaction which is the cheapest rate among the competitors. Our lowest commission rate could be our competitive advantage among the competing business.
Revenue Streams
We can profit Bagahe Padala App by taking other businesses` advertisements following the CPA, CPV, CPC, and CPM advertisement method. Each click could amount to a corresponding rate.
OUR VARIOUS COMPUTATIONS
TOTAL REVENUE FOR THE ADVERTISEMENT METHODS
We get the total revenue of APP ads by using this formula EX: ₱11.55 (ADS RATES) * 10 est. No of ads = ₱115.50 : ₱1,055.108 (overall total of rates) * 30 (days Fee for Advertisement) = ₱31,653.00
Computation for transportation revenue
Since our computed TAM is 1,000,000 customers, we can assume that number to compute the commission revenue and net revenue.
1,000,000.00(Frequency of customers) * ₱547.66 (riders transportation payment)= ₱547,660,000.00
Computation for founders commission revenue
1,000,000.00(Frequency of customers) * ₱16.94(Founders commission)= ₱16,938,000.00
Computation for Net revenue
₱564,631,653 + ₱31,653,000,000 = ₱564,631,653 - ₱6,502.81 (fees we need to pay)
Total Net Revenue =₱564,635,533.71
LIFETIME AVERAGE OF THE CUSTOMER
LIFETIME CUSTOMER VALUE= AVERAGE VALUE OF SALES * NUMBER OF TRANSACTIONS * LIFETIME /COURSE OF YEARS
LIFETIME CUSTOMER VALUE= 564.00 (Estimated minimum charging fee from Laguindingan to CDO proper ) * 5 (Average number of travel/arrival per year ( Interviewed 10 persons Travellers and OFW)) * 5
LIFETIME CUSTOMER VALUE= Php 14,100
ESTIMATED MINIMUM COST OF TRANSPORTATION FEE FROM LAGUINDINGAN AIRPORT TO CDO PROPER= 564.00
NUMBER OF TRANSACTION PER YEAR BASED LATEST SURVEY = 5 PER YEAR
Average time a customer remains active before they drop off and go “dormant= 5 years

(Maths - No Problem, Textbook 3A)
So far, I've been annoyed that my primary math education:
deprived us all of concrete and pictorial representations extremely early,
withheld alternative means of doing problems,
neglected to teach us simple methods of doing proofs that would have both built our number sense and taught us ways to check our work meaningfully,
expressly prohibited us from using methods that relied on number patterns and relationships in favor of brute force rote memorization of disconnected nonsense, and
blamed the student's "laziness" or "poor parenting" or "being a girl" or whatever other excuse was convenient when students lacked neurotypical-grade number sense.
Today, I am annoyed because I would probably have really enjoyed algebra if it had been presented like the above.
I sucked at numbers, but I really enjoyed logic puzzles as a kid. I checked out every book of logic games our library had. I cleaned up in every game of Mastermind. When I took the LSAT, years later, I scored highest in the logic games section.
The logic games section of the LSAT is notoriously designed to make test-takers reconsider their decision to go to law school. CPAs and dentists only exist because the logic games section forces aspiring attorneys to embrace their fallback plans. Nobody scores highest on the LSAT in the logic games section.
I was today years old when I realized algebra is just logic games written in unnecessarily weird and dense (to me) notation.*
The downside? I'm screamy again.
The upside? If it's just logic games written in a weird language, I can figure it out. I'm good at logic games and languages.
Herein marks the first time in 42 years I have said the words "I can figure out algebra."
Thanks once again, cartoon children.
---
*I'm betting every math person in the world is going "actually it's very concise and useful notation, let me explain the many ways in which it is neither weird nor dense." I appreciate your passion, but I won't believe you until I can navigate it myself. Please feel free to recommend some good introductory materials in the comments.
