Yes, yes she has. She starred in Terence McNally's Golden Age for MTC's off-Broadway production in late 2012/early 2013. She played Maria Malibran, a Spanish opera singer known for her wild contralto-to-soprano range. I don't think there was any opera singing included.

Enhancing Shallot Growth with Coconut Shell Charcoal and Biocomposts

Abstract

This research was conducted to assist farmers in Indonesia in overcoming the problem of scarcity of fertilizers, expensive fertilizer prices and soil conditions on dry lands. The method used is an experimental method with experiments in the field. The activity started in August, 2022 until February 2023. The design used was a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with factorial experiments. The first factor was Coconut Shell Charcoal (CSC) with 2 levels, namely T0 (soil without coconut shell charcoal) and T1 (soil and coconut shell charcoal). The second factor was liquid biocompost consisting of 5 levels, namely P0 (0 cc/litre water), P1 (1 cc/litre water), P2 (2 cc/litre water), P3 (3 cc/litre water) and P4 (4 cc/litre water). The results showed that coconut shell charcoal had a significant effect on shallot growth and yield. This treatment yielded 2.23 tonnes per hectare while the treatment without the addition of charcoal yielded 1.80 tonnes per hectare. The results of this study also showed that liquid biocompost had no significant effect on shallot growth and yield. However, the 4 cc/litre water liquid biocompost treatment gave better results, namely 2.43 tonnes per hectare when compared to the treatment without the addition of liquid biocompost with a yield of 1.80 tonnes per hectare. In addition, the results of data analysis showed that there was no interaction between coconut shell charcoal and liquid biocompost.

Introduction

Shallots (Allium cepa L.) are one of the core commodities that can have an impact on inflation in Indonesia (Permentan, 2022). Shallots have an economic value with a high demand so that the cultivation of shallots has spread to almost every province in Indonesia. Anitasari et al. (2019), stated that even though shallots are not a basic necessity like rice, shallots are always needed as a seasoning for all Indonesian dishes. Every year the shallot harvested area decreases (BPS, 2020). This is influenced by the declining productivity of agricultural land as a result of the application of inorganic fertilizers (Hand et al., 2021), high doses of fertilization and pesticides that exceed recommended doses which have an impact on soil structure (Nur and Ismiati, 2007). The decrease in harvested area can be increased by utilizing dry land which has the potential to become productive agricultural land (Rahni et al., 2003). However, not all dry land is suitable for farming. This is due to soil limiting factors such as very steep slopes or shallow soil solums. Therefore, the management of dry land in each region will be different depending on the existing limiting factors (Matheus et al., 2017).

Kata et al. (2020) reported that to improve soil quality in dry land it is necessary to use organic matter. This is in accordance with the opinion of Suntoro (2003) that the application of organic matter can improve the physic, chemical and biological of the soil. Organic fertilizers are divided into two types, namely solid organic fertilizers and liquid organic fertilizers. Solid and liquid fertilizers both have the function of adding nutrients to plants for growth and production.

Planting media is an external factor needed by plants (Budiyani et al., 2023). A good planting medium is a medium that is able to provide sufficient amounts of water and nutrients for plant growth. This can be found in soils with good aeration, good aggregates, good water holding capacity and optimal root system (Lewu and Killa, 2020).

This study is aims to utilizing waste that is considered useless as a solution to improve soil conditions in dry land and reduce the use of expensive and rare synthetic chemical fertilizers. In a previous study Apzani et al. (2015) conducted research on solid organic fertilizers and the results were good. However, Apzani et al. 2018a said that liquid fertilizer has the advantage of being easy to carry and nutrients are directly available to plants and can be applied through roots or leaves. Apzani et al. (2015) also have shown that the coconut shell charcoal has no effect on maize growth and yield. So, that is the motivation for investigated further the study about the effect of coconut shell charcoal and liquid biocompost on the growth and yield of shallot (Allium cepa L.) in dry land.

Caldwell University Bowler Lauren Marks Named CSC Third Team Academic All-America

Caldwell University senior bowler Lauren Marks (Parsippany, N.J.) has been named to the Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large Third Team as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), the organization announced today.

For Marks, a Fine Arts major with a 3.95 GPA, the honor is the latest in a line of accolades she has earned in 2023-24. The CACC Bowler of the Year, CACC Tournament Most Valuable Bowler, National Tenpins Coaches Association Strike Percentage Leader and CSC Academic All-District selection led the Cougars to their second straight CACC championship as Coach Ken Yokobosky's squad won the regular season and tournament championships.

The At-Large category encompasses the NCAA Division II sports that are not included in the other CSC Academic All-America programs. Lacrosse and bowling are the two sports that Caldwell University sponsors that are among the more than 10 sports included in the classification. Of the 194 At-Large honorees across all Divisions plus NAIA, only one other, Lara Kurt of SCAD Savannah, competes in bowling.

Marks, who retains one year of eligibility, is the 11th Caldwell University student-athlete in the school's NCAA era (since 2003) to earn the honor. Caldwell Academic All-America winners include:

Slank adalah grup musik Indonesia yang dibentuk oleh Bimbim pada 26 Desember 1983 karena bosan menjadi cover band (band yang menyanyikan lagu dari penyanyi atau band lain) dan punya keinginan untuk menciptakan dan membawakan lagu sendiri. Pada akhirnya, Slank menjadi salah satu grup musik yang berpengaruh di Indonesia. Pada tahun 2008 dan 2009, Slank disebut sebagai Indonesia's Highest-Paid Music Star (bintang musik berbayaran termahal) dengan honor Rp 500 Juta per show/tiap manggung.

Slank merupakan grup musik yang bermula dari Cikini Stones Complex (CSC) pada 25 Desember 1981, yaitu grup musik yang terdiri dari siswa SMA Perguruan Cikini, Jakarta. CSC terdiri dari Bimbim (drum), Boy (gitar), Kiki (gitar), Abi (bass), Uti (vokal), dan Well Willy (vokal), yang banyak mengekspresikan kecintaan pada lagu-lagu Rolling Stones. Grup tersebut tidak bertahan dan bubar, yang kemudian berlanjut menjadi Slank dengan perubahan personel 14 kali, hingga tahun 1996. Di album ini, Slank menggunakan tiga bahasa sekaligus: Indonesia, Jepang dan Inggris. Bagi para slanker, sebutan bagi penggemar, Slank akan memberikan bonus berupa VCD Exclusive kegiatan Slank di Jepang bila pembelian kaset atau CD album terbaru Slank.

Selain itu Slank juga mendukung berbagai acara sosial. April 2010, Slank tampil pada acara Earth Live yang mengusung tema lingkungan. Slank menyerukan perlunya hemat dalam menggunakan sumber daya alam termasuk air.

Bimbim meneruskan semangat bermusik mereka dengan kedua saudaranya Denny dan Erwan membentuk Red Evil yang kemudian berganti nama jadi Slank, sebuah nama yang diambil begitu saja dari cemoohan orang yang sering menyebut mereka cowok selengean, atau lelaki urakan, dengan personel tambahan Bongky (gitar utama) dan Kiki (gitar ritme). Kediaman Bimbim di Potlot 14 jadi markas besar mereka dan menjadi situs wajib yang harus dikunjungi para Slankers. Mereka sempat tampil di beberapa pentas dengan membawakan lagu-lagu sendiri pada tahun 1984, Kiki (gitar ritme) memutuskan untuk hengkang dari SLANK. Untuk mengisi kekosongan, pada tahun 1985 Bimbim, Denny dan Bongky memutuskan untuk mencoba menyodorkan kakak kandung Bimbim yaitu Adrian Sidharta (Adri). Kehadiran Adri justru membawa warna baru untuk musik Slank, karena Kakak kandung Bimbim ini memainkan alat musik yang sebelumnya tidak terdapat di Slank, yaitu Keyboard. Belum lama setelah masuknya Adri, Erwan (vokal) memutuskan mundur karena merasa tidak punya harapan di Slank untuk harus melanjutkan pendidikannya di Amerika. Setelah keluarnya Erwan, posisi vokalis di Slank pun diisi oleh dua gadis, yaitu Uti Suharyani dan Lala. Pada tahun 1986 SLANK kembali merubah formasi kembali Bimbim, Denny, Bongky dan Adri merekrut sebagai vokalis. Yaitu Well Welly (mantan vokalis utama CSC), ditarik untuk mengisi vokal dan terbentuklah SLANK Formasi 5. Pada tahun ini, SLANK kerap tampil dari panggung ke panggung yang tentunya dengan dandanan slenge’an dan tetap mengajak kawan-kawan terdekat untuk jadi suporter. Setahun kemudian, Adri (keyboard) memutuskan keluar dari Slank. Posisinya pun digantikan oleh Andre. Dikarenakan tidak kecocokan, Andre dan Well Willy (vokalis utama) yang harus merelakan mundur dari Slank. Denny akhirnya bertindak sebagai vokalis dan Bimbim mengajak Imanez untuk mengisi kekosongan posisi bass. Tidak lama setelah itu, Bongky (gitar utama) dan Imanez (bass) memutuskan keluar dari Slank dan posisinya digantikan oleh Pay dan Jaya serta Sammy sebagai vokalis. Jadi, personil Slank Formasi 8 adalah Bimbim (drum), Denny BDN (bass), Pay (gitar utama), Jaya (gitar ritme), dan Sammy (vocal). Ketiga personil baru pun tidak bertahan lama dan tertatih-tatih Slank kembali mengajak Imanez untuk main Bass, otomatis Denny BDN jadi vokalis dan Anto ditarik sebagai gitaris melodi dan penyanyi. Denny BDN yang harus menyelesaikan kuliahnya di Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Pancasila terpaksa mengundurkan diri dari Slank. Jadi, pendiri Slank yang masih tersisa saat itu adalah Bimbim. Anto juga ikut mengundurkan diri dan Bimbim kembali mengajak sang Kakak adalah Adri untuk kembali memberikan alunan Keyboardnya bersama Tole yang bermain Bass dan Imanez yang berpindah ke gitar melodi. Untuk posisi vokal, Slank memperkenalkan seorang wanita vokalis yaitu, Nita Tilana. Tidak lama setelahnya, Nita, Adri, dan Tole sempat menyatakan mundur dari Slank yang kini hanya menyisakan Bimbim dan Imanez saja. Untuk mempertahankan Slank, akhirnya Bimbim dan Imanez kembali menarik Pay untuk mengisi gitar utama dan Well Willy untuk kembali jadi vokalis Slank. Guna memperkokoh, Slank pun mengajak Indra Qadarsih (keyboard) sebagai personil baru. Setahun kemudian, Imanez dan Well Willy mundur dari Slank dan Bongky yang sebelumnya bermain gitar utama, kembali lagi ke Slank tapi kali ini berpindah posisi sebagai bassis, karena posisi gitar sudah diisi Pay. Untuk mengisi kekosongan vokal, Bimbim mencoba untuk mengajak sepupunya, Kaka yang saat itu tengah ngeband bareng,perjuangan panjang terbentuklah formasi ke-13 dengan Bimbim, Kaka, Bongky, Pay dan Indra Q, Slank baru solid. Mereka mulai membuat demo untuk ditawarkan ke perusahaan rekaman.

Setelah berulang kali ditolak, akhirnya tahun 1990 demonya diterima dan mulai rekaman debut album Suit... Suit... He... He... (Gadis Sexy). Album yang menampilkan tembang Memang dan Maafkan itu meledak dipasaran sehingga mereka pun diganjar BASF Award 1991 untuk kategori pendatang baru terbaik. Album tersebut juga seakan menampar industri musik Indonesia yang kala waktu itu masih gencarnya lagu melayu seperti tembang Issabella milik Search. Musik padu-padan rock and roll blues ala SLank akhirnya dekat dengan anak muda di Indonesia. Gaya mereka yang khas, cuek, slengean, tapi bersahabat berhasil menarik massa yang saat itu masih sebatas minoritas.

Album kedua mereka, Kampungan, meraih sukses yang sama. Single dari album ini Mawar Merah dan Terlalu Manis dibuat dalam dua versi. Suka-suka dan Jualan. Namun anehnya, justru lagu yang versi Suka-suka lah yang menjadi hits dan sering dimainkan. Disini Kaka bermain harmonika. Di album Kampungan ini pun, Slank memasukkan lagu Nina Bobo.

1993 Desember, Slank merilis album ketiga Piss! yang merupakan plesetan dari kata peace. Jargon ini menjadi tren pada masa itu. Hits single album ini adalah Piss dan Kirim Aku Bunga dengan cover album seorang model yang meniru pose Jim Morrison walaupun banyak yang berpendapat bahwa model di sampul album tersebut adalah Bimbim, tetapi faktanya model cover album tersebut adalah Adji Tarmo, tetangga seberang rumah Bimbim.

1994, Slank merilis Generasi Biru dengan andalan Generasi Biroe, Terbunuh Sepi, dan Kamu Harus Pulang. 1995 Agustus, Slank mengisi sebuah acara di salah satu stasiun televisi dalam rangka menyambut Hari Jadi Kemerdekaan Indonesia yang ke-50. Mereka membawakan beberapa lagu dari album Generasi Biru. Album kelima mereka, Minoritas, dirilis Januari 1996. Menampilkan single Bang Bang Tut sukses dipasaran. Di album tersebut, Bimbim menyanyikan sebuah lagu miliknya yang berjudul Bidadari Penyelamat tanpa iringan musik apapun, hanya suara Bimbim saja.

Pada saat menggarap album ke enam Lagi Sedih, Bimbim memutuskan untuk memecat Bongky, Pay dan Indra. Namun ada juga yang menyebutkan bahwa Bongky, Indra dan Pay keluar atau mengundurkan diri karena perilaku Bimbim dan Kaka yang sudah terlampau parah dalam penggunaan narkoba. Perpecahan tersebut sebenarnya sudah mulai terlihat di album keempat mereka di lagu Pisah Saja Dulu. Bimbim bahkan berniat untuk membubarkan Slank.

Namun sebuah surat yang ditulis dengan darah oleh seorang Slanker membuatnya mengurungkan niatnya. Yang berisi surat bernada ancaman dan bersumpah untuk membunuh Bimbim jika sampai membubarkan Slank tidak dapat dihindari. Kaka dan Bimbim akhirnya tetap menggarap album keenam dengan bantuan musisi tambahan.

Reynold masuk untuk mengisi posisi gitar dan Ivanka yang waktu itu sering nongkrong di Potlot juga ikut membantu dalam mengerjakan project Slank untuk album keenam dengan formasi masa transisi ini. Album Lagi Sedih dirilis pada Februari 1997. Single Koepoe Liarkoe dan Tonk Kosong membuktikan Slank masih bisa bertahan. Tawaran manggung pun berdatangan. Dan saat tinggal beberapa kota yang akan diselesaikan dalam rangkaian pertunjukan, Reynold menyatakan keluar dari Slank. (http://www.MaritimeCyprus.com) STEAM (Sea Traffic Management in the Eastern Mediterranean) is a three-year project that has started in Jan. 2019 with a budget of approximately one million EUR. The project (INTEGRATED/0916/0063) is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research Promotion Foundation.

The primary goal of STEAM is to develop the Port of Limassol to become a worldclass transshipment and information hub adopting modern digital technologies brought to the maritime sector, as well as a driver for short sea shipping in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Towards this end, the ports of Cyprus, and especially the Port of Limassol will have a vital role to play due to its strategic location, as an information hub, exchanging information with both nearby ports and ships in the Eastern Mediterranean area for optimizing the ships’ routes, expanding the planning horizon for port operations, and avoiding possible dangers.

The geographical location of Cyprus encourages the use of Cyprus ports as transshipment hubs for short sea shipping. In the STEAM project, the implementation of the STM concept will be significantly extended and enhanced by the successful testbed conducted at the Port of Limassol through the further development of Port CDM, which will enable real-time situation awareness to all participants involved in maritime activities in the ports of Cyprus.

Moreover, the Port of Limassol will be modernized with innovative technological solutions and advanced data analytics providing new decision-support tools and services for maritime stakeholders.

Cardiac Stem/Progenitor Cells

(These handy cells were a big part of my dissertation so if you have any questions please do shoot me a message!)

Until recently, the mammalian heart was believed to be terminally differentiated and unable to regenerate following myocardial injury. However, in 2003 (ref) a subpopulation of cells was reported in the rat heart expressing c-kit+ (the stem cell factor receptor), Sca-1 (stem cell antigen-1) and MDR-1 (multidrug resistance protein-1) cell-surface markers, as well as being lineage negative (lacking mature cell lineage markers). 

These were suggested to be cardiac stem cells (CSCs, sometimes termed CDCs (cardiac derived stem cells)), and were successfully isolated in humans, proving able to differentiate into cardiomyocytes. CSCs have since been shown to be self-renewing, clonogenic, and multipotent; and able to differentiate both in vitro and in vivo into cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle. 

CSCs show potential for heart regeneration. 

By itself, an injury to the heart (eg from ischaemia) results in scar tissue which will never heal 

CSCs show: the greatest myogenic differentiation potential in vitro and in vivo, 

highest cell engraftment and paracrine factor secretion

provide the greatest amelioration of cardiac function (Ghafarzadeh, Namdari and Eatemadi, 2016).

Several groups have also reported the presence of endogenous epicardium-derived myocardial and vascular progenitors in the adult human heart (Smart et al., 2011). A mixed population appears to be resident, consisting of c-kit+ cardiac progenitor cells and cells expressing both mesenchymal-related (CD90) and endothelial progenitor-related (CD31/CD34) markers. 

CSCs can be cultured as multicellular clusters, termed cardiospheres, to produce a mixed population, which appears most effective in restoring heart function. 

Regenerative stem cell therapy

Heart tissue damaged by ischaemia, eg after a heart attack, will never be able to function as it once did, resulting in impaired overall heart function. As stem cells can divide without limit and differentiate into heart cells, they could be used to restore functionality to a damaged heart. In the past decade, various stem cells have been trialled to attempt to regenerate heart tissue with limited success. CSCs are relatively new to trial but theoretically should be more effective and, although the data is too limited to as yet draw statistical conclusions, this seems initially to be true.

However, a lot is yet to be understood in this field. An interesting phenomenon arises as studies consistently show that even if very few cells manage to successfully engraft, cardiac regeneration occurs and persists. Engraftment events appear to be infrequent and yield too few new cardiomyocytes to account for the degree of improvements observed. This suggests that other mechanisms, such as paracrine signalling, are involved in improvements to heart function. Ultimately, it may be an understanding of these mechanisms - and not a new stem cell type - that is required to finally master heart regeneration.
