Keiss tower house, Caithness

Keiss Castle was a ‘Z plan’ tower house built in the late sixteenth/early seventeenth century by George, Earl of Caithness but seized when he repeatedly defied King James VI. The structure was ruinous by the eighteenth century and was replaced by an elaborate mansion house nearby. The beach and grounds were heavily fortified during WWII.
