Greetings,

When I think of myth I think of Greek mythology, and then I think of Hades, and then I think of the soundtrack, and then I think of Coral Crown. It is a great song.

In the wider context of society however, myth extends to the adoption of a connotation to a denotation as commonplace within a society.

Below I have outlined some individuals who have commented on myth and it's relationship to society. They are by no means chosen on merit or sense, they are just dudes I happened to have read on.

Carl Jung

Myths are the expression of archteypes. These archetypes are from the collective unconcious, a shared resovoir that incluences human behaviour.

A myth is a myth because it speaks to a person and is really about that person. [3]

Unique to Jung, Myth focused more on theories of personality and psyche. The majority of his research is derived from a psychological perspective.

Roland Barthes

Myth is constructed through language and social practices. He believed that the creation of myths are used dominant peoples to legitimize power.

Barthes follows up on the school of semiotics established by Ferndinand de Sassure through the signified and the signifier and the relationship with myth. [1] From this principal, myth is created through the attachment of a meaning to a form.

Micel Foucault

Myths are produced and circulated within specific social and historical contexts, serving to reinforce power structures. Myth, from his perspective, is not only a reflection of a type of reality, but is something that shapes perception and self-perception.

Foucault tries to make it evident how something that appears as nature is actually the product of history. [2] There are also many similarities between his notion of the myth and the Hegelian-Marxist notion of second nature.

Joseph Campbell

He proposed the concept of the "hero's journey," a common narrative structure found in myths worldwide. Campbell believed that myths offer insights into the human psyche and spiritual experiences.

Campbell often described mythology as having a fourfold function within human society. [5]

The Cosmological Function

The Sociological Function

The Pedagogical/Psychological Function

Claud Levi-Strauss

Myths reveal the underlying logic of human thought and society through analyzing myths as cultural structures and focuses on their underlying binary oppositions (strauss himself is a key figure in the field of structuralism and is considered the founder in many senses).

His main interest lied in the why myths from different cultures around the world was so similar. He answers this question by looking at the structure of myths, rather than at their content. While the content is similar, their structure is similar. This is because myth has to be told in order to exist. [4]

The Goldfish brand is run by Pepperidge farms. Pepperidge has many different lines under it name and pepperidge itself was bought by Campells soup. The small part that is Goldfish has its own deep product mix width featuring all of the different styles of Goldfish, this gives customers the choice of which goldfish they would want. These are considered a product line as they are closely related. The Goldfish brand is a family brand that plays off of its familiarity with people to stay in relevance. Physically they have the goldfish on the box with a smile and a tag line to be remember. Gold fish also has partnered with Disney and other brands in the past to create products that have co-branding to hit a wider audience. Really the goldfish brand is just one large product line extension as the crackers that are made now continue to be virtually the same as the crackers from years ago.

Episode 217 - Death: A Jungian Perspective

Awareness of death can help us create an intentional life—one that serves the movement of soul toward wholeness. Jung realized that although we experience death as “a fearful piece of brutality,” the unconscious images death as celebration. On a night train after his mother died, Jung reported that “during the entire journey I continually heard dance music, laughter, and jollity, as though a wedding were being celebrated.” Our limited capacities and the conditions of earthly life preclude certainty about life after death, but Jung’s recognition of universal mythic patterns led to his theory of archetypes and a psychic reality beyond our grasp. We glimpse it in dreams, visions, precognitions and synchronicities, and it can inspire connection with the infinite, which Jung considered life’s decisive question. For Jung death was “an archetype rich in secret life, which seeks to add itself to our own individual life in order to make it whole.”

The marketing objective that they have is completed with the four Ps of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion). Goldfish provides a quality product that is consistently the same insuring a good market relationship with its costumers. The pricing that is used reflects that family oriented nature by making them affordable and in bulk quantity. The placement and promotion of goldfish is strategic in nature as they are marketed heavily at children so that they can get their parents to satisfy the home.

The head quarters of goldfish is with their parent company pepperidge farms in Norwalk, Connecticut USA. Pepperidge itself is a subsidiary of Cambles Soup Company. with only employing 14,100 people the goldfish brand and pepperidge farms pulls in around 608.4M dollars yearly most sales come from the cash cow cheddar goldfish but recently they have seen a rising star of Flavor Blasted goldfish.

Within the snack food industry goldfish is not quite the juggernaut that one might think. When looking at the market they function within RITZ and CHEEZE-IT are the clear dominating forces both pulling in nearly 1b in sales alone. when thinking of a SWOT analysis these companies are their greatest threats.
