Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, 711 Foothill Blvd, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011

Handel’s used to be called Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt a few years ago. I dropped by to get some yogurt and they only had one flavor, vanilla. At some point they dropped the Yogurt from the name and no longer offer froyo.

If you like ice cream, they have lots to choose from: ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, and ices by the scoop, milkshakes, sundaes, malts, floats, pops, ice cream sandwiches, chocolate covered bananas, etc. They make their own waffle cones and bowls. A single scoop is $5.50.

I was surprised that they do not offer any samples. Most ice cream places have samples.

Most of their flavors have inclusions like nuts, cookies, chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, etc. They’re more indulgent.

Green tea ice cream: a single scoop is generous. The ice cream was dense, rich, and creamy. It seemed sweeter than usual and the green tea flavor wasn’t as strong as I’m used to…but then again, I probably should have chosen a more traditional flavor.

All the seating is outdoors. Easy strip mall parking.

In 2019, a strange little pink house appeared right on the top of the historical plant of the Canada Malting Silos, built in 1905 and abandoned in 1986. The unknown authors brought the material to an height of about 35 meters to build this absolutely unique thing and added later other pieces to their creation, like a Christmas three, a gift and other decorations. 

I think I have never seen anything like this in hundreds of explorations in abandoned places!

Tasting Note:

Nose: Cooked banana and tropical fruit.

Palate: Guava, cantaloupe melon, over-ripe white peach, vanilla and peels.

Finish: Floral, spicy finish.

Overall: Add a drop of water and it tastes just like nectarine chunks in low fat yoghurt!

Serving: Given its subtlety and smoothness, this needs no water to lighten it or open it up, though a large ice cube on a hot day might not go amiss.

That's a great idea, I'll link a few recipes for some of the classics:

Salt and Pepper tofu (this is my favourite)

Sweet and sour tofu

Tofu Foo Yung

Vegan duck pancakes

Vegan battered fish

Chip-shop style chips - salt and malt vinegar are essential. Serve with the fish, curry sauce or covered in onion/mushroom gravy. Chip balm (chips on a large bread bun with the sauce or gravy on top is also traditional)

Vegan fried rice

Chip shop curry sauce

Vegetable spring rolls

Vegan chow mein - I’d substitute agave syrup for maple.

There are plenty of alternative recipes around, so try a few if you don't have much success with the version I've provided here.
