We're three days shy of the end of the "buffer sprint," and it's...had some ups and downs. Rather than 30K at the end, it will end up somewhere around 17-18K total written, with about 3K of that discarded and another 2K reworked into a later chapter. So more like 12-13K actual draft writing, with 2K in reserve for later.

Chapter 36 is draft-complete. Chapter 37 is nearing completion. I think I'll plan to write chapter 38, and then start editing and posting again?

The worst part was figuring out how to sequence/start ch36. I ended up writing 5(!) different openings. One was discarded maybe 400 words in, because I didn't like it. Another was the stablehand scene I shared a little bit ago. One became the second scene instead. Another was the Larys scene that will end up in ch38 instead in some capacity. And the "final" opening scene was originally meant to be the second scene! 😂 This was where the "just write to get words down" approach backfired honestly. I wrote a lot of things I was unhappy with and had to do a lot of editing/rewriting/discarding. It ended up costing me a lot of time and momentum.

OTOH, it did get me to a solution eventually, so who's to say that the conventional approach would have worked any better.

With the thorniest knots out of the way, I do feel like I can write more freely, which is nice. Now I just have to figure out how I want to do Laena and [redacted]. Especially since I'm very tempted to have the boys push for [redacted], though I think there's a bigger payoff if that waits until the Runestone arc next story. And some ideas are percolating in my head for the Rhaenyra POV around ch39-40...
