When Picard and Sisko faced great military/personal setback they got to go back to earth for a few weeks and work through some family trauma, meanwhile Janeway just has to sit in an empty holodeck thinking about why killing herself would be detrimental to the crew’s chances of getting home and I feel like that really highlights some character differences

I FUCKING LOVE the fact that in Star Trek they don't have any surveillance cameras anywhere on the ships, or even on the stations. Because in the utopian future there is no fucking invasive surveillance for no reason and they've found other ways to be safe.

Chakotay was quite literally shocked while trying to assist Kathryn with some primitive electrical components on this planet of giants. Kathryn ensured he was perfectly fine before she remarked that any time they work on a project together, "sparks fly."

The way Janeway is both undeniably feminine and undeniably assertive, pragmatic, and a "doer" helped give me something I'd been missing from my experience/understanding of what it meant to be a woman. I was only a couple years into adulthood when I first watched Voyager, and Janeway was a big influence on helping me realize there didn't have to be any conflict between my innate personality and my sense of womanhood, just because I didn't fit the (largely misogynistic) ideals that were taught and modeled for me when I was growing up. Her representation is truly timeless.

Janeway is still incredible representation

As a young woman, I’m obsessed with Janeway. I imagine her being amazing representation back then, but I think that she’s still incredible representation now. Here are some things that I think still make her unique 30+ years later:

She’s “motherly” and she wants to have children, but she’s never made to feel bad or less than about not having children.

She’s so naturally commanding. There are no conversations about her being a woman in charge, she just is.

She has a mixture of stereotypically masculine and feminine interests and traits. As a starfleet captain, she gets to work a lot with science and engineering but in her spare time she plays gothic holonovels and knits.

She sacrifices her personal happiness with great stoicism. This feels like a trope I see used for male heroes, intended to show their strength of character, but I rarely see it used for female characters

She often argues for the pragmatic stance without being an emotionally closed off person. This is so refreshing since many female characters often argue for the moral and/or emotional stance. Female characters who argue for the pragmatic stance will often be shown as emotionless, cruel etc.

She has very realistic mental health problems and regrets, but she presents herself with incredible confidence. She has the same touch of overconfidence that Kirk has, but seeing a female character possess this trait (without being a villain) is still unusual.

She’s a middle aged woman who gets to be seen as beautiful and desirable without that being the focus of her character. The respect she gets from others is earned by her actions, but her beauty is also acknowledged.

Janeway is good at almost everything, but she isn’t always right and she’s no Mary Sue. She’s so aspirational because she’s so realistic, she is never “chosen”, special or superhuman in any way. She feels like a woman I could know, and it’s inspiring to see an “ordinary” woman lead and do extraordinary things with knowledge and determination.

sooo incredible that the first female captain in star trek has a first officer who’s so stupidly in love with her that he just follows her around hopelessly. like yeah I Am the Captain of this Vessel. Oh, who’s that? Oh That’s My Loyal and Besotted Knight. Yeah he comes with my whole thing. He Serves me with Undying and Patient Devotion. Sometimes he carves me a bathtub.

Captain Janeway is one of my favorite characters of all time because she was SO annoying to the time travel police that one of them went insane and tried to kill her. 11/10 no notes.
