Lejaren Hiller, Iconic Pulp Cover: Absinthe, for Flynn's Weekly Detective Fiction Magazine, 1928.
About
On offer is a remarkable published pulp cover painting by Lejaren Hiller (American, 1880-1969), titled Absinthe, for Flynn's Weekly Detective Fiction Magazine - April 21, 1928. Between 1924 and 1939, the artist created hundreds of covers for this long running title, and this is among the most captivating. The image showcases an up-to-the-minute smoking flapper girl feeling strangely fine as the hallucinogenic effects of the bottle of absinthe she has just consumed wash over her body, soul and mind. To further the hedonistic mood, smoke plumes seductively drift off into the cafe where she is seated. The setting evokes the fast-living expatriate Americans who took to Paris after World War I, escaping prohibition and their own demons. We found an interesting visual from the Elspeth Brown book The Corporate Eye, which examines photography as a mass media technology and its influence on the progressive age in American culture. It shows Lejaren Hiller's proof photograph of the model as used to create this now iconic pulp cover. That image is seen below. It is possible that a copy of this photograph was mounted to the illustration board as a guide to Hiller's painting, as he often explored such mixed media methods in his work. Painting is French matted and housed in an antique period fine frame under glass. (x)

𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧 6# || 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨
✮⋆˙⋆✮
You step into the dark and empty hallway of your apartment, gradually making your way deeper into it.
As you continue forward, you reach out and flick the switch, illuminating your apartment with a warm and inviting glow.
You expected today to be a calm day at work, but as the hours passed, additional stress gradually piled up, weighing heavily on your shoulders.
Having to request additional hours from your boss further drains your energy, compounding the exhaustion you already feel. The burden of shouldering the responsibility to cover all your expenses and work for everything on your own weighs heavily on you.
While your apartment may not be big, it's also not small. The price you pay for it is undoubtedly justified, and you genuinely appreciate the comfort and companionship your apartment provides you.
You continue to make your way deeper into the house, setting your small bag down on the dining table with a sigh of relief before strolling into your bedroom to change into more comfortable clothes. After you've changed into a casual attire, you suddenly hear your phone ringing in your bag over in the dining area.
You rush out of your room and head to the dining area, swiftly retrieving your phone from your bag.  You're met with Seungmin's name shining brightly on the screen, and without any hesitation, you promptly answer the phone and bring it close to your ear.
"Hey beautiful," Seungmin is the first to speak, his gentle voice resonating in your ears.
You can't help but release a soft chuckle, a smile gracing your lips in response to the endearing nickname. "Hey, Min."
"What're you doing?"
"I just got home from work, it's been a long day." It really was a long day. All you're yearning for is some well deserved rest in your cozy bed right now.
"Mhmm, you should rest." You hum softly in response to Seungmin's words, and there is a brief pause on the line before he swiftly breaks the silence.
"I need to ask you something, if you don't mind." Seungmin confesses, and your eyebrows instinctively raise a little.
"Yeah of course, what is it?"
He releases a sigh before delving into the topic. "Well.. Taehyung's birthday is in two days— as you probably know,"
Oh, yes. You wanted to discuss Taehyung's birthday with him. Seungmin and Taehyung have been really good friends for a long time, and you've been wondering if they've been in touch since Taehyung found out about Seungmin's mistake. It would be strange not to invite one of his closest friends to his birthday, but he would never go against you as well. He understands that Seungmin hurt you, and if it comes down to it, he can end their friendship.
"Oh yes, I wanted to talk to you about this." You quickly say, leaning against the counter in the kitchen. "Did you guys talk after.. you know—"
"No, we didn't. That's the thing. I was wondering if he mentioned anything about me to you."
Taehyung definitely didn't bring up anything about Seungmin. Actually, you haven't had a chance to talk to him in the past two days, except for responding to some random memes he sent on the group chat. "He didn't."
"Oh." Seungmin lets out, and you can hear the disappointment in his voice. "Did you tell the others about.. us?"
Nope. You haven't actually informed your friends about you and Seungmin yet.
Not to mention Jimin is already aware of the situation, and you can trust that he won't share it with anyone while he knows it makes you uncomfortable. However, you still have to inform Taehyung and Jungkook about it. You can't help but feel nervous as if they'd judge you, even though you know they would never do so. But you're still nervous, considering how protective they are over you. You know they only want the best for you, and you can't blame them for that.
"I decided not to. I thought it would be the best to keep a low profile, due to the short amount of time that has passed."
"Understandable."
You will have to spill the beans at some point, though. There's really no benefit in prolonging it any further.
You sigh, "maybe I should tell them."
"Are you sure?" He asks you, and you pause for a moment.
"I guess? I don't want you and the guys to remain in a conflict. Especially you and Tae," you tell him, pushing a strand of your hair behind your ear. "I'll tell them tomorrow."
"Only if you feel like it's the right thing."
Do you? It's probably the right thing to do to inform them as soon as possible to prevent any potential discomfort.
"Anyway," Seungmin breathes out, snapping you out of your thoughts. "You should get some sleep, you sound tired."
"Yeah, I'll call you tomorrow." You respond softly, a yawn escaping your mouth in process.
"Good night, gorgeous."
"Night."
And you hang up. You set your phone down on the table, contemplating the recent conversation. Will you tell them tomorrow? Most likely. You're optimistic about the outcome.
Taehyung would probably be initially confused, but he would still support you without further questioning. As long as you're okay with it, he would be too. Your main concern lies with Jungkook's reaction. It's clear that he and Seungmin have never been fond of each other, and the recent heartbreak you went through has only intensified that dislike.
You'll do your best to convince him and reassure him, although it may prove challenging. He would never go against you, of course, but he won't easily let it slide either.
Once you realized that you hadn't taken a shower, you dedicated some time to self care. Eventually, you settled into your comfortable bed, leisurely scrolling through social media until drowsiness overcame you, and you drifted off to sleep.
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
"It's fine, don't worry. I'll take care of it." Iseul lets out a light hearted laugh, dismissing you and reassuring you not to be concerned for the fifth time.
It's currently 2PM. Today has been quite calm at work so far, and you were able to message Jungkook to meet you at your workplace. Iseul kindly suggested that she takes care of everything at the register instead of you. You tried to insist, but she reassured you that it's all good. Right now, Jungkook is waiting at the entrance of the cafe, wearing a slight smile as he patiently waits for you.
Your boss won't blame you for it, despite all the other times you worked longer hours than necessary. Everything is fine.
"Thank you so much, I'll make it up to you." You thank her, beaming with a warm smile.
She acknowledges with a chuckle, and you swiftly shift your attention to Jungkook, offering him a smile before the two of you exit the cafe.
You spot Jungkook's black Mercedes parked across the street, piquing your curiosity as you gaze at him. "No motorcycle today?"
"Nah. Felt like driving." Jungkook smirks at you, causing you to slightly roll your eyes before the two of you enter his car.
"Where to?" Jungkook asks after securing his seatbelt and starting the engine.
"Our place." You reply with a grin, leaning your head back on the seat.
You and Jungkook have this special spot that's meaningful to both of you. It may not be extraordinary to others, but for the two of you, it definitely is. It's a serene lake, secluded from all the chaos and commotion. It's not too far either, just a ten minute drive from Jungkook's place.
During your high school years, Jungkook and you stumbled upon this spot. Whenever you needed some space and a chance to chat, you would retreat there. Despite often visiting this place and sharing a fondness for it, a sense of nostalgia washes over the two of you every time you arrive.
The remainder of the drive is filled with random conversations and singing along to Jungkook's playlist playing in the background.
You've been contemplating how to broach the subject of you and Seungmin in front of Jungkook. He still believes you're in denial and that you and Seungmin will never speak again. Additionally, he couldn't help but notice your cheerful demeanor today, which he finds a little strange.
You just have to trust that it will happen naturally. There's no need to unnecessarily stress over it. After all, he is your best friend and there's nothing to be afraid of.
As you peer through the window, you can see that you and Jungkook have arrived. It's a quiet place, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, where nature reigns supreme. The place that provided comfort to the two of you during your teenage years.
Jungkook smoothly parks his car in an empty spot and shuts off the engine, causing the music to fade away. He flashes you a smile, and you return the gesture before stepping out of the car.
You sigh as you gaze upon this profoundly nostalgic place. Jungkook moves a few steps ahead and patiently waits for you. You begin to make your way down the gentle slope, surrounded by trees, until you arrive at a picturesque small lake adorned with a quaint wooden bridge.
You and Jungkook are comfortably seated on the edge of the low bridge, indulging in the beautiful view that unfolds before your eyes.
"I'll never get tired of this place." Jungkook's voice breaks the silence, prompting you to briefly shift your gaze towards him.
"Yeah, me too." You smile warmly, making a subtle adjustment to your sitting position as you take a deep breath.
"Jungkook." You call out his name after a momentary silence that hung in the air. He looks at you, and you notice a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes. You can't help but feel a flutter of nervousness within yourself.
"I wanted to tell you something.. I don't know why I feel so nervous about it, I'll have to tell you at some point so I decided to do it now—"
He cuts you off, "what? Do you have a crush on me or something?"
Your eyes widen with a mix of surprise and frustration and you nudge his shoulder, shooting him a piercing glare. "Ew!"
"Stop being a pain in the ass." You feign a gag, eliciting a laugh from Jungkook at your exaggerated reaction.
After a moment of joking around, you find the strength within yourself to transition into the more serious and significant topic. "It's about me and Seungmin."
Jungkook's smile fades and he directs his gaze towards you, his eyebrows raised in a perplexed expression. Fuck, why are you so nervous? It's not that big of a deal.
"Okay." His voice takes on a subdued and composed tone, different than the sarcastic demeanor he had just a moment ago.
He maintains his gaze, seeking to make eye contact with you as you release a sharp exhale. "We.. we're back together."
You meet his gaze, searching his eyes for any sign of his reaction. His eyebrows furrow, and a look of confusion crosses his face, as if you have just stumbled upon something seemingly impossible. "What?"
"He— he apologized, and he promised not to disappoint me ever again." You hope that he won't, at least. "I gave him a second chance, Kook."
Jungkook gazes at the serene lake before you, lost in the depths of his own contemplation.
"How long?"
The unexpected question prompts you to cast a perplexed glance in his direction. "What?"
"How long has this been going on?" He locks his eyes with yours, awaiting your response. He's aware that it's evidently not that long, considering it has only been a few days since the incident.
"A week." You cautiously utter your words, and he shifts his gaze away, pressing his tongue against his inner cheek as he nods.
"Listen, I know it sounds ridiculous—" You try to articulate your thoughts and defend yourself, but he interrupts you abruptly.
"Yeah, very ridiculous."
Jungkook's words make you furrow your brows and feel a bit frustrated. You're mad that he's overreacting like this, even though this is about you, not him.
"You know, it's my decision to make. I know what I'm doing." You confidently express your thoughts, emphasizing your words with your tone.
"Do you?" Jungkook responds with a frustrated chuckle, glancing in your direction.
"Why are you mad? I'm responsible for my own decisions, not you."
"Well, maybe because my best friend is back with a guy who broke her heart just several days ago?"
You're still upset, yet you also comprehend his perspective. You acknowledge that getting back with Seungmin so quickly wasn't the wisest choice, but Jungkook isn't aware of your emotions. You have strong feelings for Seungmin. Jungkook is simply concerned for your well being, and he has a valid reason to be.
"You don't know him. He would never repeat his mistakes." You defend Seungmin, gazing down at the water beneath your feet.
Jungkook laughs for a brief moment, prompting you to give him a questioning glance. "You're so naive."
"Me?" Your eyes widen a little, and you let out a breathy chuckle. You'd consider yourself everything but naive.
"Yes, yes you. A guy who had the courage to hurt a woman wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing once more."
Jungkook's words pierce through your heart like a sharp blade, evoking a sense of fear within you. You never expected Seungmin to do something like this to you. And if he hurt you once, nothing could stop him from repeating his actions.
You look at Jungkook with big eyes. "Why can't you trust me?"
Jungkook stares at you, and it seems as though he harbors a sense of pity for you. "I trust you, I just don't trust him."
You look away, directing your attention towards your palms. He knows how much you love Seungmin, having listened to your countless mentions of him during the early stages of your relationship. He understands how important this is for you.
"Listen, you know I'll never go against you. But I don't want you to get hurt." Jungkook's words resonate with you, leading you to nod in comprehension.
"I know." You almost whisper. You raise your gaze, meeting his eyes once again, desperate for him to grasp your perspective just this once. "Can you please let it go? For me?"
Jungkook's lips subtly twitch as he leans back, supporting himself with his hands. "Okay."
You can't help but break into a radiant smile, your entire expression lighting up. You lean closer to Jungkook, hugging him tightly. "Thank you. I mean it."
"Just be careful, alright?" Jungkook's lips curl into a gentle smile as he envelops you in his embrace, his arms encircling you while he tenderly caresses the back of your head.
"I will." You lean into the comforting warmth of his chest, relishing in the closeness for a few more moments before gradually pulling away.
"Did you tell Jimin and Tae?" Jungkook asks you as soon as your eyes meet.
Jimin is already aware, thanks to you and your big mouth. You'll have to find a chance to inform Taehyung about it, though. You're not overly worried since Taehyung tends to not make a fuss about such matters.
"Jimin already knows by accident, it slipped out during a conversation. I was thinking about telling Taehyung today as well because his birthday is in two days, and him and Seungmin are pretty close.. I don't want them to remain in a conflict because of me," you cross your legs, "I'll tell him today."
Jungkook acknowledges your words with a nod, his fingers gently combing through his hair as he comprehends the situation.
"Did you talk to Namjoon about the bowling alley?" You ask him, jumping into a new topic of discussion.
"Ah, yes. We discussed about it a little more," Jungkook tells you and you gaze at him, patiently waiting for him to continue.
"We informed Taehyung's friends about it. Namjoon is going to hire the entire place for us, and we'll take care of the food and drinks. I'll text you the details."
You respond to Jungkook's explanation with a soft sound of acknowledgement, and for the following minutes, a serene silence envelops the two of you as you both immerse yourselves in the beautiful view in front of you, lost in your own thoughts.
Despite wearing warm clothes, you begin to feel a slight chill. It's often the case that December evenings in Korea tend to be colder, though.
You rest your head on Jungkook's shoulder, embracing yourself in an effort to ward off the chill. He senses your discomfort and removes his jacket, draping it around you.
"You'll catch a cold, bunny." You say, prompting Jungkook scrunch his nose at the nickname.
"I told you not to call me that."
