“Humans in the loop” must detect the hardest-to-spot errors, at superhuman speed
Tumblr media
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me SATURDAY (Apr 27) in MARIN COUNTY, then Winnipeg (May 2), Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), and beyond!
Tumblr media
If AI has a future (a big if), it will have to be economically viable. An industry can't spend 1,700% more on Nvidia chips than it earns indefinitely – not even with Nvidia being a principle investor in its largest customers:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39883571
A company that pays 0.36-1 cents/query for electricity and (scarce, fresh) water can't indefinitely give those queries away by the millions to people who are expected to revise those queries dozens of times before eliciting the perfect botshit rendition of "instructions for removing a grilled cheese sandwich from a VCR in the style of the King James Bible":
https://www.semianalysis.com/p/the-inference-cost-of-search-disruption
Eventually, the industry will have to uncover some mix of applications that will cover its operating costs, if only to keep the lights on in the face of investor disillusionment (this isn't optional – investor disillusionment is an inevitable part of every bubble).
Now, there are lots of low-stakes applications for AI that can run just fine on the current AI technology, despite its many – and seemingly inescapable - errors ("hallucinations"). People who use AI to generate illustrations of their D&D characters engaged in epic adventures from their previous gaming session don't care about the odd extra finger. If the chatbot powering a tourist's automatic text-to-translation-to-speech phone tool gets a few words wrong, it's still much better than the alternative of speaking slowly and loudly in your own language while making emphatic hand-gestures.
There are lots of these applications, and many of the people who benefit from them would doubtless pay something for them. The problem – from an AI company's perspective – is that these aren't just low-stakes, they're also low-value. Their users would pay something for them, but not very much.
For AI to keep its servers on through the coming trough of disillusionment, it will have to locate high-value applications, too. Economically speaking, the function of low-value applications is to soak up excess capacity and produce value at the margins after the high-value applications pay the bills. Low-value applications are a side-dish, like the coach seats on an airplane whose total operating expenses are paid by the business class passengers up front. Without the principle income from high-value applications, the servers shut down, and the low-value applications disappear:
https://locusmag.com/2023/12/commentary-cory-doctorow-what-kind-of-bubble-is-ai/
Now, there are lots of high-value applications the AI industry has identified for its products. Broadly speaking, these high-value applications share the same problem: they are all high-stakes, which means they are very sensitive to errors. Mistakes made by apps that produce code, drive cars, or identify cancerous masses on chest X-rays are extremely consequential.
Some businesses may be insensitive to those consequences. Air Canada replaced its human customer service staff with chatbots that just lied to passengers, stealing hundreds of dollars from them in the process. But the process for getting your money back after you are defrauded by Air Canada's chatbot is so onerous that only one passenger has bothered to go through it, spending ten weeks exhausting all of Air Canada's internal review mechanisms before fighting his case for weeks more at the regulator:
https://bc.ctvnews.ca/air-canada-s-chatbot-gave-a-b-c-man-the-wrong-information-now-the-airline-has-to-pay-for-the-mistake-1.6769454
There's never just one ant. If this guy was defrauded by an AC chatbot, so were hundreds or thousands of other fliers. Air Canada doesn't have to pay them back. Air Canada is tacitly asserting that, as the country's flagship carrier and near-monopolist, it is too big to fail and too big to jail, which means it's too big to care.
Air Canada shows that for some business customers, AI doesn't need to be able to do a worker's job in order to be a smart purchase: a chatbot can replace a worker, fail to their worker's job, and still save the company money on balance.
I can't predict whether the world's sociopathic monopolists are numerous and powerful enough to keep the lights on for AI companies through leases for automation systems that let them commit consequence-free free fraud by replacing workers with chatbots that serve as moral crumple-zones for furious customers:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0747563219304029
But even stipulating that this is sufficient, it's intrinsically unstable. Anything that can't go on forever eventually stops, and the mass replacement of humans with high-speed fraud software seems likely to stoke the already blazing furnace of modern antitrust:
https://www.eff.org/de/deeplinks/2021/08/party-its-1979-og-antitrust-back-baby
Of course, the AI companies have their own answer to this conundrum. A high-stakes/high-value customer can still fire workers and replace them with AI – they just need to hire fewer, cheaper workers to supervise the AI and monitor it for "hallucinations." This is called the "human in the loop" solution.
The human in the loop story has some glaring holes. From a worker's perspective, serving as the human in the loop in a scheme that cuts wage bills through AI is a nightmare – the worst possible kind of automation.
Let's pause for a little detour through automation theory here. Automation can augment a worker. We can call this a "centaur" – the worker offloads a repetitive task, or one that requires a high degree of vigilance, or (worst of all) both. They're a human head on a robot body (hence "centaur"). Think of the sensor/vision system in your car that beeps if you activate your turn-signal while a car is in your blind spot. You're in charge, but you're getting a second opinion from the robot.
Likewise, consider an AI tool that double-checks a radiologist's diagnosis of your chest X-ray and suggests a second look when its assessment doesn't match the radiologist's. Again, the human is in charge, but the robot is serving as a backstop and helpmeet, using its inexhaustible robotic vigilance to augment human skill.
That's centaurs. They're the good automation. Then there's the bad automation: the reverse-centaur, when the human is used to augment the robot.
Amazon warehouse pickers stand in one place while robotic shelving units trundle up to them at speed; then, the haptic bracelets shackled around their wrists buzz at them, directing them pick up specific items and move them to a basket, while a third automation system penalizes them for taking toilet breaks or even just walking around and shaking out their limbs to avoid a repetitive strain injury. This is a robotic head using a human body – and destroying it in the process.
An AI-assisted radiologist processes fewer chest X-rays every day, costing their employer more, on top of the cost of the AI. That's not what AI companies are selling. They're offering hospitals the power to create reverse centaurs: radiologist-assisted AIs. That's what "human in the loop" means.
This is a problem for workers, but it's also a problem for their bosses (assuming those bosses actually care about correcting AI hallucinations, rather than providing a figleaf that lets them commit fraud or kill people and shift the blame to an unpunishable AI).
Humans are good at a lot of things, but they're not good at eternal, perfect vigilance. Writing code is hard, but performing code-review (where you check someone else's code for errors) is much harder – and it gets even harder if the code you're reviewing is usually fine, because this requires that you maintain your vigilance for something that only occurs at rare and unpredictable intervals:
https://twitter.com/qntm/status/1773779967521780169
But for a coding shop to make the cost of an AI pencil out, the human in the loop needs to be able to process a lot of AI-generated code. Replacing a human with an AI doesn't produce any savings if you need to hire two more humans to take turns doing close reads of the AI's code.
This is the fatal flaw in robo-taxi schemes. The "human in the loop" who is supposed to keep the murderbot from smashing into other cars, steering into oncoming traffic, or running down pedestrians isn't a driver, they're a driving instructor. This is a much harder job than being a driver, even when the student driver you're monitoring is a human, making human mistakes at human speed. It's even harder when the student driver is a robot, making errors at computer speed:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/01/human-in-the-loop/#monkey-in-the-middle
This is why the doomed robo-taxi company Cruise had to deploy 1.5 skilled, high-paid human monitors to oversee each of its murderbots, while traditional taxis operate at a fraction of the cost with a single, precaratized, low-paid human driver:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/11/robots-stole-my-jerb/#computer-says-no
The vigilance problem is pretty fatal for the human-in-the-loop gambit, but there's another problem that is, if anything, even more fatal: the kinds of errors that AIs make.
Foundationally, AI is applied statistics. An AI company trains its AI by feeding it a lot of data about the real world. The program processes this data, looking for statistical correlations in that data, and makes a model of the world based on those correlations. A chatbot is a next-word-guessing program, and an AI "art" generator is a next-pixel-guessing program. They're drawing on billions of documents to find the most statistically likely way of finishing a sentence or a line of pixels in a bitmap:
https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3442188.3445922
This means that AI doesn't just make errors – it makes subtle errors, the kinds of errors that are the hardest for a human in the loop to spot, because they are the most statistically probable ways of being wrong. Sure, we notice the gross errors in AI output, like confidently claiming that a living human is dead:
https://www.tomsguide.com/opinion/according-to-chatgpt-im-dead
But the most common errors that AIs make are the ones we don't notice, because they're perfectly camouflaged as the truth. Think of the recurring AI programming error that inserts a call to a nonexistent library called "huggingface-cli," which is what the library would be called if developers reliably followed naming conventions. But due to a human inconsistency, the real library has a slightly different name. The fact that AIs repeatedly inserted references to the nonexistent library opened up a vulnerability – a security researcher created a (inert) malicious library with that name and tricked numerous companies into compiling it into their code because their human reviewers missed the chatbot's (statistically indistinguishable from the the truth) lie:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/03/28/ai_bots_hallucinate_software_packages/
For a driving instructor or a code reviewer overseeing a human subject, the majority of errors are comparatively easy to spot, because they're the kinds of errors that lead to inconsistent library naming – places where a human behaved erratically or irregularly. But when reality is irregular or erratic, the AI will make errors by presuming that things are statistically normal.
These are the hardest kinds of errors to spot. They couldn't be harder for a human to detect if they were specifically designed to go undetected. The human in the loop isn't just being asked to spot mistakes – they're being actively deceived. The AI isn't merely wrong, it's constructing a subtle "what's wrong with this picture"-style puzzle. Not just one such puzzle, either: millions of them, at speed, which must be solved by the human in the loop, who must remain perfectly vigilant for things that are, by definition, almost totally unnoticeable.
This is a special new torment for reverse centaurs – and a significant problem for AI companies hoping to accumulate and keep enough high-value, high-stakes customers on their books to weather the coming trough of disillusionment.
This is pretty grim, but it gets grimmer. AI companies have argued that they have a third line of business, a way to make money for their customers beyond automation's gifts to their payrolls: they claim that they can perform difficult scientific tasks at superhuman speed, producing billion-dollar insights (new materials, new drugs, new proteins) at unimaginable speed.
However, these claims – credulously amplified by the non-technical press – keep on shattering when they are tested by experts who understand the esoteric domains in which AI is said to have an unbeatable advantage. For example, Google claimed that its Deepmind AI had discovered "millions of new materials," "equivalent to nearly 800 years’ worth of knowledge," constituting "an order-of-magnitude expansion in stable materials known to humanity":
https://deepmind.google/discover/blog/millions-of-new-materials-discovered-with-deep-learning/
It was a hoax. When independent material scientists reviewed representative samples of these "new materials," they concluded that "no new materials have been discovered" and that not one of these materials was "credible, useful and novel":
https://www.404media.co/google-says-it-discovered-millions-of-new-materials-with-ai-human-researchers/
As Brian Merchant writes, AI claims are eerily similar to "smoke and mirrors" – the dazzling reality-distortion field thrown up by 17th century magic lantern technology, which millions of people ascribed wild capabilities to, thanks to the outlandish claims of the technology's promoters:
https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/ai-really-is-smoke-and-mirrors
The fact that we have a four-hundred-year-old name for this phenomenon, and yet we're still falling prey to it is frankly a little depressing. And, unlucky for us, it turns out that AI therapybots can't help us with this – rather, they're apt to literally convince us to kill ourselves:

FINISHING AT EIGHT OR NINE ?
!: First chapter of this introduction: PROLOGUE
?: Ellie Williams x Fem!Reader - SFW - Stalker!Ellie
Ring! Ring!
The phone calls, causing you to rise from the high-chair you sit by near a counter, chilled AC blaring cool air from it’s vents while you shiver. You didn’t complain however, this being one of the only jobs you’d actually secured with your resume consisting of goat-hearding, plowing fields with no real training whatsoever. Upon answering and reaching for the phone, a somewhat grumpy man answers, asking if there were lumber planks he could pick up for a project. You ask for a name, crouching down to grab the notepad and pen placed away in a small cubby.
Joel Miller.
Jotting it down, you ask for a total amount of planks to which he asks for a dozen. You nod, twelve.
“Alright, and will that be a pick up or would you want it delivered? I will say, we have a large influx of orders out currently so our delivery services won’t get to you until tomorrow evening.”
He mumbles a few incoherent phrases away from the phone-reciever, likely speaking to someone else before returning to it, “My daughter will pick them up actually.” You give him the okay, jokingly commenting on it’s usual for people to go with the pick up option to lessen the charges of the total cost but he doesn’t seem amused, scruffing out a blunt bye before abruptly hanging up.
Rude.
In around ten minutes, a rusted truck pulls up infront of the shop; In what seems like a tee, some muddy sneakers and a cap was a woman, hopping out of the vehicle, and lightly jogging to the front door. She taps on it once, pointing a finger to the lock with an inconvenience expression.
Right, it was locked.
You mouth a small sorry, walking over to let her in as you open the glass door. “I’m so sorry, it’s late so I usually lock the doors unless I know someone is coming.” You say a bit embarrassed at your lack of attention. She dismisses you with a small wave, cracking a smile before speaking, “It’s alright.”
She’s average height, slightly maybe even shorter than your own frame. Leading her to where the order was stacked and ready to go, you assist her in carrying it back to her car. She lets out a long breath, thanking you for the help. You reassure her it’s fine, that’s it’s apart of the job. Before she can even take out her wallet, you’re leaving. Huh?
You’re actually clueless of your surroundings that it strikes something in the other woman. She eyes you for a moment while you retreat back into the shop, clicking her tongue in confusion when you immediately lock it and return to the magazine you were busying yourself with. You really did forget. Ellie wasn’t dumb. Anyone with eyes could see you weren’t from here, and frankly, she hoped you weren’t always this forgetful. Instead of reminding you, she revs the truck up and goes on her merry way.
You’d learn after this
Ellie tells herself at the redlight, fishing out a cigarette from the glovebox.
Oh, did you learn.
You were given quite the earful when you informed your manager about the incident the next morning, only even remembering when checking the cash register before closing the previous night. Fuck, I didn’t charge them.
Abby Anderson was quite the powerhouse, shaking your shoulders in anger when you broke the news you’d been scammed out of a good 120 bucks. She sighs, peering down at your remorseful face, your bottom lip quivering in guilt at your own wistful mistakes. “Alright, ‘gimme a name. Our shop doesn’t get all that many new customers often so I can probably recognize and tab them before dad gets a whiff of this.”
Miller.
Abby leans her body over the counter when you say that, resting her forearms on it’s cold surface as she lets a scoff out, “Joel Miller?” You nod in reaffirmation from where you stood with crossed arms meekly. She squints her eyes in disbelief, shaking her head ever so slightly trying to make sense of it all. Joel was a man with a temper for sure, but he wasn’t no thief.
She quickly grabs your wrist and the plentiful keys that hang on the nailed wall, “They live in your apartments, we’re getting that money.”
Abby quickly exits the shop with you behind her, flipping the sign on the window CLOSED before scurrying to meet her pace down the street. Thankfully, your building wasn’t that far away from work, however, now you had to make it known to yourself that you likely resided in the same complex as kleptomaniacs.
Abby knocks on the door that reads 207, waiting for a response. It seems like forever that you two stand there waiting, getting even tired that you opt to sit down on the carpeted hallway floor. Eventually, it’s cracked open by the same woman you recognized yesterday to have picked up the order. You scatter to stand up, pointing a finger behind Abby’s broad shoulder, “It’s her!” You shriek, to which the girl looks you up and down. “I have a name.” She spits out annoyed, rolling her eyes.
“Yeah, Yeah. You tried punking my employee, Williams. That the shit you’ve lowered yourself to?” Abby equally retorts venomously. Ellie shrugs, “I ain’t do that. She didn’t ask for the money so I assumed it was paid for or ‘sum.”
You immediately drop your jaw, how could she justify that? She knew it wasn’t paid for! “Joel called and said you’d pick it up and I have the call log so don’t even.”
She seemingly rolls her eyes again, leaving the door before returning with a wallet, “Quit bitching in my ear and name your price. Jesus.” Abby’s eye twitches ever so slightly at the audacious act put on; “120 and don’t call me a bitch.”
“Actually, I didn’t call you one, I said—! “
Abby snatches the money anyways, forcing you to follow her like a kicked puppy as she trudges towards the elevator and practically punches the button. Once it arrives and you both step in, she rubs her face with a calloused palm in an attempt to soothe the irritation away.
“Ask for money next time. We don’t have pre-paid shit.” Before you can even respond back, you’re both exiting the cart, and the building— walking back to the shop.
While you believe it was done and over, Ellie watches you two from her bedroom window. Something ever so slightly glosses over her eyes when she watches you walk with Abby, obviously struggling to meet her fast-pace. Maybe it’s the weed she’s smoking, or maybe it’s something deeper. However, something about you rubs Ellie, and she can’t tell for the life of her if she likes it or not.
In the span of that very same week, she finds out your name and where you reside, and just her luck, it’s close!
So very close.
Ellie emphasizes, watching you tiredly slug past her unit door through the peephole a couple minutes past 9 everynight.

Excerpt from this story from Rolling Stone:
EARLIER THIS WEEK, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a European Union-funded research group, announced that last Sunday, July 21, 2024, the daily global average temperature hit 62.76 degrees. It was the hottest day scientists have measured since 1940 — which officially makes it the hottest day ever recorded on Earth by humans. Twenty four hours later, however, Copernicus had to update its report: On Monday, the temperature climbed up to 62.87 degrees. As of now, July 22, 2024 is now the hottest day ever recorded.
But hey, it’s only Friday. Who knows what the weekend holds? Or the rest of the summer, for that matter.
Are you shocked by news of this record-breaking heat? Does the fact that you lived through two of the hottest days on Earth that scientists have ever recorded make you think differently about the risks and consequences of living on a rapidly-warming planet? Did you pause for a moment and think about the millions of people who sweat through this without air conditioning? Did you mourn the 396 deaths from heat that are under investigation this summer in Phoenix? Did you sell your car and buy an electric bike? Were you inspired to sign up to knock on doors to help Kamala Harris defeat the climate-hoax-pushing-criminal Donald Trump? Are you getting calls from your MAGA-loving uncle in Idaho apologizing for the long lecture he gave you at Thanksgiving last year about how Earth’s temperature moves in natural cycles, or about how higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is good because more CO2 makes crops and trees grow better?
Probably not.
The problem is not you. The problem is that a broken heat record is just another statistic. The story of the climate crisis is written in broken records that measure levels of CO2 pollution, glacial ice melt, rising sea levels, crop failure, megafires, the spread of diseases, heat deaths, wildfire and insurance costs, and economic losses. But if shocking data and broken records could galvanize people to take action on climate, we’d all be powering our iPhones with solar power from microgrids, and millions of cows and chickens would be liberated from factory farms. We’d have cities crowded with bike lanes and a high speed rail service between Dallas and Houston. We’d laugh at climate-hoaxing politicians and debate whether it is fair and just to charge Big Oil companies with criminally negligent homicide.

Context in life is basically everything, Prof. Andrews would say over and over when he'd give his lectures on symbolism and figurative language. To understand a thing's purpose, one must place it within the correct context.
Which is why my brain's flapping around like a car with a blown tire right now. The correct context for the man sitting next to me is . . . not here. His proper context is out in the big scary world being bigger and stronger than everything, making the problems he solves seem both too big to handle and too trivial to bother with, saving the world through sheer American . . . American-ness. He doesn't belong here. In the same room as me. Next to me. Close enough to feel his heat and smell his cologne. It's got me all flustered and twitterpated and all that jazz.
Doing my absolute best to ignore the superhero sitting next to me, I face front. Mr. DeSousa's launching into his presentation on Vought South America's aggressive property acquisition push in Brazil. It's got nothing to do with my end of the business, and in no time I'm so bored I'm rigored. The buzzing from the lights is giving me a headache and I skipped lunch so I wouldn't have to use the bathroom at an awkward moment. I'm sweating under my second best suit and the stale air's making me feel smothered and claustrophobic. In the back of my mind I can feel the cost of my presence here mounting in terms of jobs back home that aren't getting done. Ever since Vought's Western division split I've been pulling eighty hour workweeks getting the new Seattle offices off the ground. Like the wise man said, war is hell but expansion is worse.
Oh and did I mention that Soldier Boy is sitting right here beside me? Bumping my left elbow as I try to catch up on this month's budgets? Who is currently wearing a nice but unremarkable double-breasted suit, a watch chain gleaming gold at his waist. Nothing to hint that he's outside his proper context except no way would anybody with eyes think he belongs in this crowd. He's a leopard in a den of hyenas.
God's night jars he even brought a briefcase, dark green leather with brass clasps.
"Psst!" I start so hard I almost drop my pen. It takes everything I got to not squeal like a five-year-old. I've met Supes before. They're a good-slash-service that we sell. Close to, they're human like the rest of us. But with Solider Boy, the illusion's not collapsing. It's just getting new dimensions. For instance, did you know he has freckles? Itty-bitty ones, scattered across the bridge of his nose. "Have you got a light, miss?”
Words in language using vocabulary I was taught at some point-- my brain seizes up solid.
"Light?"
"Oh! Uh . . ." I hand him my little black Ronson and he lights a cigarette, patrician lips clutching the filter end and mouth working around the smoke.
"Much obliged," he looks at the lighter barrel, "Ace?"
Alice Corina Espersen, that's me.
"So if someone would please get the lights--"
"Let me." DeSousa turns pale as Solider Boy uncoils himself from his chair and reaches to flip the switch. The light from the slide projector and the odd glow of a cigarette ember are the only illumination as we're treated to click after click of tropical-looking wildernesses and charts showing developmental timetables.
Click and Solider Boy's handing me my lighter back, trailing his fingers over my hand in a light incidental caress that makes every hair on my body stand on end.
Click and he's slouched to the side, pressing his arm firmly against my shoulder. Thick as a tree branch; if he pumped his bicep his sleeve would pop open.
Click and he's leaning close to speak softly in my ear, asking me what the ACE stands for, making a small pleased noise when I introduce myself.
Click and he's inhaling softly, smelling my hair and my perfume. I blush so red my head hurts when I realize he can also smell my sweat.
Click and I feel a touch on my leg under the table. Just a light little pet on the top of my thigh, warm through my stocking.
Click and his hand’s fitted just above the cap of my knee, big and hard.
Click and his thumb’s rubbing a funnybone.
Click and he’s pushing up the hem of my skirt, one torturous fraction of an inch at a time.
Click and he’s touching the meaty inside of my leg.
Click. Click. Click.
The lights come back on and Soldier Boy’s sitting with his hands folded on the table in front of him, face as open and innocent as an angel. Mr. DeSousa calls a break, making some lame seventh-inning-stretch joke I barely hear. "Thank you for your attention. Reconvene in thirty."
Forgetful of my dignity, I make my quick way to the ladies’ room. God I’m a sight, flushed tomato red and my makeup caked up by sweat. From being pawed by . . . by . . .
Bonk context, I got up in the mirror universe this morning. One where the greatest hero to ever live just spent over an hour feeling me up and one where I’d trade my immortal soul if only he'd do it some more. I stuff my emergency rock candy in my mouth and lean over the sink to splash water on my face. The cool wetness is blessed relief.
I straighten up and in the mirror-- the shriek of surprise gets shoved back down my throat as a big hand covers my mouth. “Shh,” Solider Boy says. “Easy Ace.” His free hand covers my ribs and pulls me into his body. I’m decked out in every authority symbol I can manage to compensate for the tiny body the good Lord done gave me; dark framed glasses, black suit, understated makeup. Against Soldier Boy, none of it works. He's just so big, powerful, there's so much of him. His body eclipses mine, his presence extinguishes me. I melt back into the heat of his embrace. “The door’s locked, and we only have twenty minutes.”
I defy any red-blooded American female to look into those eyes and say no thank you sir I’d rather not get fucked in the bathroom like some back-alley floozy. Solider Boy shoves my skirt up and grunts in approval when he feels the snaps of my garter belt and the lacy tops of my stockings. My underwear vanishes with a snap of failed elastic. Thanks to his work from earlier, I’m all humid down there. He makes quick work of the buttons on my blouse, sighing in appreciation as he eyes my bra. The pads of his fingers brush my button, soft and gentle.
"Shh," Solider Boy whispers as I try and suck back my whimpers. "Don’t want anyone to guess what we’re up to, hmm?" I shut my eyes, torn right down the middle between mounting horror and mounting lust. Some seconds pass in silence, then a hard voice in my ear orders, "Open your eyes Alice. I want you to see this."
This can't be me, this slut looking back at me with her skirt up and her bosoms hanging out, Soldier Boy's face hanging over my shoulder and his fingers coaxing something clawed and merciless out of my center. He takes off my glasses, studies them a moment, and flings them into a corner. My hair falls down everywhere as he pulls out the pin. "There we go. It’s always you professional girls who pop like firecrackers."
Professional. That’s me, no room in my life for anything like what he’s making me feel. To be taken seriously in a man’s world a woman’s gotta be ten times the man of everyone around her-- in control but never dominant, supportive but never motherly, attractive but never sexual. Soldier Boy’s yanking me out of my context and making me feel grateful for it right alongside the shame.
“Oh, good girl,” he tells me in a voice of pure intoxication as I reach up and link my hands behind his neck. My chest rises as my body stretches, lifting my bosoms and exposing my throat. Soldier Boy’s fingertips keep pressing, caressing, his touch light and sure and turning my whole body into a building thundercloud. His free hand covers my mouth and I sob out a strangled wheezing moan as I seize up in the hardest brightest climax I’ve ever had in my life.
I stumble forward and catch myself by my hands on the sink counter, panting and shaking. My hair hangs down in strings over my eyes. Chuckling to himself, Solider Boy steps back. I hear the clack of a lock. "Better hurry. You've only got five minutes."
Trembling like a newborn fawn, I readjust my clothes, do what I can for my hair and powder my nose. I look . . . like a hooker halfway through a long hard night on the streets but it's going to have to do. My bare crotch feels slimy and disgusting and without underwear I just have to hope my slip and skirt lining can hold the line against a wet spot bleeding through.
"Dammit Ben--" I hear someone say as I hurry out of the restroom. I'm the last one in as Security locks the doors. The VP of talent management's taken my seat and I'm stuck having to excuse myself to the only empty chair. I can hear the end of my career in the stony silence, see it in everyone's disgusted glare. Dear Lord strike me dead. Hell can't be much worse than this.
And yet, I can feel the weight of Solider Boy's stare on the back of my neck. My sex burns and throbs, weeping a tiny trickle of nectar and making my slip stick to me. God help me but if he wanted to throw me on the floor down in front of everyone, I'd let him. Hell, I'd thank him.
Finally, mercifully, it's over. I've got a redeye back to Seattle and a long weekend of head-clearing drudgery ahead of me in the privacy of my own home. Doing my best to ignore the lecherous smirks, I make a show of packing up my attaché case as the room clears. I'll feel better after a nice big room service supper, a hot shower, and a few hours of sleep.
As I'm following the pack towards the bank of elevators, a long arm snatches me into a hallway I didn't notice before and before I can say Jack Robinson I'm being whisked into an empty elevator. Strong arms lift me out of my shoes and guide my legs in a monkey wrap. My head goes light and swimmy as lips clamp over mine and a broad tongue licks its way into my mouth. I'm weightless, underwater, drowning. My body doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to him.
"Sweet like candy," Solider Boy mumbles between kisses.
"I've got to catch a plane--" I squeak.
"No. You don't." The elevator door beeps open and Solider Boy carries me to my fate. --- AN2: Soldier Boy strikes me as the type of sexual predator who lives in that dubcon twilight zone of But They Really Wanted To and refuses to entertain the idea that consent under duress is invalid.

I'm reading old reports from before the official formation of NJ Transit right now...
Tumblr media
This dates to 1978, and they were still determining what to do with the former Erie-Lackawanna trackage, particularly with regards to upgrading the electrification on some lines. At the time, the passenger service was being operated by Conrail under contract to the NJ Department of Transportation. NJ Transit was founded in 1979, and it officially took over passenger service in 1983.
I'm obsessed with this guy who proposed a suggestion without realizing he was reinventing Manhattan Transfer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcription:
Commuter Alternative Proposed: Dear Editor: Many readers of The Star-Ledger commute on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. The state of New Jersey has proposed to re-electrify the line so passengers can ride to New York's Penn Station. I would like to offer an alternate proposal. The state is accepting delivery of new multiple unit cars from General Electric. These cars are slated to be used on the Erie-Lackawanna. However, it will be years before these cars can be used because they are designed to use AC power and the E-L has DC power. There is local opposition to the project due to noisy substations. Finally, how are passengers on the E-L diesel trains going to get to New York's Penn Station? The state should discontinue accepting the new cars pending specification [revision?]. Future cars should be [?] to use DC power, the power the E-L now uses [?] Harrison, where the Erie-Lackawanna and the Penn Central tracks come close together, a station should be built. There would be a high level platform with the E-L on one side and the Penn Central on the other. ALL E-L trains bound for Hoboken would stop here. Passengers wishing to travel to New York's Penn Station would change to waiting Penn Central trains. Those wishing to go to Hoboken would stay on the E-L trains. E-L passengers coming home from New York would change at Harrison to waiting E-L trains. The new AC multiple-unit cars the state now has would provide the shuttle between Harrison and New York. The DC cars of the future would provide the service between E-L points and Harrison. Diesel train passengers as well as those on E-L electric trains could use this service. This service could be instituted much sooner and at far less cost than the state's plan of electrification. Joel N. Rovick, Long Branch
Manhattan Transfer, located in Harrison, NJ, just like where this person wanted to put their version, was active from 1910 to 1937, and its entire purpose was to transfer people from one type of power to another - steam locomotives would pull the trains up until that point, and then passengers would switch over to an electric multiple unit to go under the Hudson into Penn Station. You could also transfer to the PATH (then the H&M) here starting in 1911. Once the PRR electrified south of the station, however, there was no longer a need for it - note that it closed in 1937, and the GG1s had entered service a few years prior starting in 1934. Newark Penn Station, fully electrified, negated the need for a transfer point for both the PRR and the PATH - today you can go straight along the Northeast Corridor through Newark right into New York Penn Station, and you can take the PATH from Newark all the way to the World Trade Center instead of having to take it from Manhattan Transfer.
The only reason Manhattan Transfer lasted beyond 1933, when the PRR was running electric trains through and south of it, was for that PATH transfer. Once that was no longer needed, it was only a matter of time.
I just think it's funny that this person may have unknowingly done this, because this newspaper article ran in 1978, 41 years after the station closed. Depending on the writer's age, it might not have even existed in their lifetime.
And I guess their idea did sort of come into fruition years later, but in a much different location - Secaucus Junction.

@reverendsus i think the whole nuclear family + stranger danger + fantasy of independence ideas that are so ingrained in american culture are a huge detriment to stuff like this … it's not BUILT to sustain communities and mutual help like tht
this is true, but i think the hopeful thing that keeps me motivated is the building of this culture is not dependent on bending laws or institutions, but can be done via grassroots organizing or leveraging existing communities.
Department of Behavioral Health/Disabilities (DBHDID, DBHDD, etc.) and Centers for Independent/Accessible Living (CAL/CILs) vary in quality but often offer trainings or community support groups for individuals with disabilities and the people who love them; you may also have a department of aging, community chest/metro united way, or other city/county-level orgs that provide public education and services
Religious organizations are often leaders in community support especially around foster care. Orphan Care Alliance in KY allows you to post needs and then meet others', like car repairs or a mattress or money for a hotel to keep a family stable.
Suicide prevention training like QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is commonly given even for free by state and community organizations, alongside Mental Health First Aid; there are crisis intervention trainings but tend to be a little more rare or likely to cost something
Trauma-informed care, ACEs and PACEs trainings are often available depending on location from local or state organizations if you want a better vocabulary for talking about trauma and being supportive of otehrs who have experienced it
the Science of Hope, while really kind of just like Pedagogy of the Oppressed but with stats, is easy to locate ted talks on and lays out the impact & importance of hope - & how we can give it to each other
the biggest challenger here is that because it's all necessarily hyper-local, you will have to figure out for your individual area and state and context what's good and what's not. not all CILs or advocacy orgs are equally effective or well-run, but it's worth looking. you do have to get to know people, it's a lot of word of mouth, but that's the network that needs built.
and, ultimately, doing things like joining your neighborhood association if you have one or joining a community garden or just straight up getting to know your neighbors contributes heavily. hope is a social gift, and strong natural supports are the #1 most important factor in resiliency - letting people you live alongside know you both are here together, even and maybe especially if you never become friends, is a meaningful push in the right direction. be a cool aunt/uncle/cousin to non-relatives, appreciate your regular customers at work, give grace, learn to ask if folks are okay when you are able to listen, etc. forming connections that are founded in "I care that you exist in the world alongside me, even if we barely know each other, because you are in my community" is the work. it is so complex but at its heart, that is the work, period.
in turn, if you can't do that for any number of reasons right now, you deserve to have a network of supportive community too, even if you don't have it. the point of doing what you can when you can is that everybody needs the connection to others, and sometimes you need more of it.
my coworker says our job in BH healthcare is to hold hope for our members until the time they can take their hope back and hold it for themselves. sometimes you may be on one side or the other of that hopeful/lessness, but that is something you can do with very little training. and if you don't have hope, you can grow it for yourself, too, with some help. i promise that.

Essential Car Maintenance: Air Conditioning Service and Engine Repair in Alberta
Maintaining your vehicle is crucial for its longevity and performance, especially in Alberta, where the climate can be harsh on cars. Among the most important aspects of vehicle maintenance are air conditioning service car and engine repair. Ensuring these systems run efficiently will keep your car comfortable and reliable, no matter where you drive.
Tumblr media
The Importance of Air Conditioning Service
Driving in Alberta, particularly during the summer months, can become unbearable without a well-functioning air conditioning system. A properly serviced AC system provides comfort, reduces fatigue, and helps maintain focus on the road. However, the AC system in your car can degrade over time due to refrigerant leaks, clogged filters, or faulty compressors. Regular air conditioning service ensures your system runs smoothly and prevents unexpected failures.
Some of the key signs your car might need air conditioning service include:
Weak airflow: This could indicate clogged vents or a malfunctioning compressor.
Unpleasant odors: Mold buildup in the AC system is often the culprit.
Inconsistent cooling: A sign of refrigerant leakage or thermostat issues.
By scheduling regular maintenance, you can avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected AC breakdown and ensure that your car remains comfortable throughout the year.
Engine Repair: Critical for Vehicle Longevity
One of the most important aspects of car care is Engine repair in alberta, where cold winters and long driving distances are common, a healthy engine is essential for reliable transportation. Ignoring engine issues can result in costly repairs down the line or even a complete engine failure. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to warning signs can help keep your engine in optimal condition.
Common indicators that your car might need engine repair include:
Check engine light: This is often the first sign of trouble and shouldn’t be ignored.
Strange noises: Knocking, grinding, or hissing noises from the engine bay can indicate a serious problem.
Decreased performance: A drop in power, reduced fuel efficiency, or stalling are warning signs that your engine needs professional attention.
In Alberta, where driving conditions can vary drastically, engine repair is essential for the safety and longevity of your vehicle. A well-maintained engine ensures better fuel efficiency, longer vehicle lifespan, and a smoother driving experience.
When to Seek Professional Help
While some car maintenance tasks can be performed at home, air conditioning service and engine repair often require professional expertise. DIY fixes for complex systems like your car's AC or engine can lead to more damage and higher repair costs in the long run. A certified mechanic can diagnose the issue accurately and perform the necessary repairs, ensuring the job is done right the first time.

Regular air conditioning service and engine repair in Alberta are critical to ensuring your vehicle runs efficiently and comfortably. Maintaining these systems can help you avoid costly repairs, extend your car’s lifespan, and improve your overall driving experience.

The Ultimate Guide to Air Conditioning Maintenance in Maitland
Maintaining a comfortable and cool indoor environment is essential, especially in a place like Maitland, where temperatures can soar during the summer months. Air conditioning systems play a crucial role in providing comfort, but they require regular maintenance to operate efficiently and avoid costly breakdowns. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the importance of air conditioning maintenance in Maitland, the benefits of regular servicing, and some practical tips to keep your system running smoothly throughout the year.
Tumblr media
Why is Air Conditioning Maintenance Important?
Air conditioning systems, much like any other mechanical equipment, require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance. Here’s why maintaining your air conditioning in Maitland is so crucial:
Extended Lifespan: Regular maintenance helps in extending the lifespan of your air conditioning unit. Just like a car needs oil changes and tire rotations to stay in good condition, an AC unit needs routine checks and cleanings. Without proper maintenance, components can wear out faster, leading to premature system failure.
Improved Energy Efficiency: A well-maintained air conditioning system operates more efficiently, consuming less energy to cool your home or office. This not only helps reduce your carbon footprint but also significantly lowers your utility bills. A dirty or clogged filter, for instance, can make the system work harder than necessary, consuming more electricity.
Enhanced Air Quality: Regular maintenance helps improve the air quality within your home or office. Dust, pollen, and other pollutants can accumulate in the AC system over time, reducing the quality of indoor air. By regularly cleaning and maintaining the system, you can ensure that it provides clean and healthy air.
Reduced Repair Costs: Regular maintenance can help identify potential issues before they become major problems. This proactive approach can save you from expensive repair costs down the line. Small issues such as a refrigerant leak or a worn-out fan belt can be addressed quickly and affordably, preventing them from escalating into more significant problems.
Reliable Performance: No one wants their air conditioning to fail in the middle of a hot Maitland summer. Regular maintenance ensures that your system remains reliable and performs optimally when you need it the most.
Key Components of Air Conditioning Maintenance
Maintaining an air conditioning system involves several tasks, each aimed at ensuring the system’s efficiency and longevity. Here are some of the critical components of air conditioning maintenance:
Air Filter Cleaning or Replacement: One of the most critical aspects of maintaining an air conditioning unit is regularly cleaning or replacing the air filters. Clogged or dirty filters can reduce airflow, causing the system to work harder and use more energy. Additionally, dirty filters can allow dirt to bypass and get into the evaporator coil, which affects the coil’s ability to absorb heat.
Inspecting and Cleaning Coils: The evaporator and condenser coils of an air conditioning system can collect dirt over time. This dirt reduces the coils’ ability to absorb and expel heat, reducing the system’s efficiency. Regular cleaning of coils is essential to maintain the system’s cooling capacity.
Checking the Refrigerant Level: A crucial part of air conditioning maintenance is ensuring that the refrigerant levels are optimal. Low refrigerant levels can indicate a leak or an issue with the refrigerant lines. An HVAC technician should check the refrigerant levels and recharge the system if necessary.
Examining the Thermostat: The thermostat controls the temperature settings of the air conditioning system. Regular inspection ensures that the thermostat is operating correctly and accurately, maintaining the desired indoor temperature. Upgrading to a programmable thermostat can also help improve energy efficiency.
Lubricating Moving Parts: The moving parts of an air conditioning system, such as the fan and motor, require regular lubrication to operate smoothly. Lack of lubrication can cause friction, leading to wear and tear and potentially causing the motor to fail.
Checking Electrical Connections: Faulty or loose electrical connections can lead to system failures or reduce the efficiency of the air conditioning unit. During a maintenance check, all electrical connections should be inspected and tightened to ensure they are secure.
Inspecting Ductwork: Leaky or damaged ductwork can cause a significant loss of cool air, making the air conditioning system work harder and consume more energy. Regular inspection of ductwork can help identify leaks or damage, ensuring the system’s efficiency.
Clearing the Condensate Drain Line: The condensate drain line can become clogged with dirt, mold, or algae over time, causing water to back up and potentially damage the system. Regular cleaning of the drain line prevents water damage and helps maintain system efficiency.
