#Cardboard gable boxes

I've just finished watching the last episode of Granada's Sherlock Holmes. I've been taking my time with this last season, because I knew it was coming to an end and I wanted to make it last a long as possible.

I know many people don't watch the final season because of Brett's failing health at the time, but you are missing out on some really great episodes. They obviously had to make some accommodations around Brett's condition, but I think they did very well, and Brett still embodies Holmes splendidly.

I think my favourite episode of this last season was "The Dying Detective", so much angst potential between Holmes and Watson. It was one of the only times we see Watson fumble with his medical equipment on screen, when he thinks Holmes might be dying. Watson is always more assured in his role as a medical doctor, but not this time. It also has that great line from Holmes "If you love me, hide!" and of course Watson hides immediately, because of course he loves Holmes!

"The Golden Pince-Nez" had good Holmes brothers shenanigans, as they solve a case together.

"The Three Gables" and "The Red Circle" are both really solid and enjoyable mysteries.

Although, I did miss Lestrade, an inspector Hawkins is the main inspector for most of the season, he does a good job, but he lacks the personality of Lestrade.

My least favourite episode was probably "The Mazarin Stone", just because Sherlock was barely in it, because of Brett's health issues at the time. Although, it was a bit of fun to follow Mycroft around, and I kind of love that they decided to make Count Sylvius Mycroft's arch enemy, a la Moriarty for Sherlock, why they have beef it doesn't really matter. Also, poor long suffering Watson in that episode has to not only put up with pushy clients but also become Mycroft's second for his case. You can just see Watson wondering how he ended up in such a situation.

Also Watson, gets severely injured in at least two episodes this season, so if you like your Watson whumped, there you go.

"The Cardboard Box" is a somewhat sad episode to end on. However, I did really enjoy the short scenes we get of Holmes and Watson celebrating Christmas, it's very domestic.

It is sad that they never got to finish all the canon stories, that they never got their final bow. However, I think I like where we left them. It's Christmas time, Holmes and Watson are both still together at Baker St, and they always shall be.

My first class of the semester starts this week, so I thought I'd make a lil post on my favorite school tips and tricks for Spring 2024 :)

Studying and homework ⋆。·˚ʚ 🩰 ɞ˚‧。⋆

🩰 White noise. If you struggle with zoning off while you work, white noise is exactly what you need. I personally prefer pink or brown noise because it's a little deeper and softer and white noise just makes me think of falling sand.

🩰 Stay on top of your assignments. In the beginning for me especially, it's so easy to let things slip. Do not do it. It will impact your grade for the rest of the semester. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. Try and do your homework right when you get home. That way, you maximize relaxed time without worrying about assignments.

🩰 Keep your study space clean and cute. You're not going to feel motivated sitting at some grungy old cardboard box that smells like leftover pizza! Try and make your study place somewhere you enjoy to be. And keep it clean!

🩰 Pomodoros. I love love love pomodoros. They help me stay so much more focused because it's like a challenge to study through the whole time. If you don't know what a pomodoro is, this link explains it pretty well ♡

🩰 Find what works for you. I find I focus best in the morning. Some people feel like they're at their sharpest at 2:15 PM. Experiment a little with a low-pressure assignment and figure out when you work best. Once you do, schedule your assignments accordingly. The hardest go during that time, but the easiest go when you're least motivated. Also try and go to a coffee shop or the library! It's sooo motivational.

🩰 All nighters. These are great for romanticization purposes and nothing else. Get. Your. Eight. Hours. Of. Sleep! Unless you only found out about an assignment the night before its due and there's no other option, do not do it! You need rest for your brain to function properly. There was a study I remember hearing about where one group of students crammed for a test the night before and the others slept well, and the well-rested ones got higher scores.

🩰 Study groups. If you work well with other people, do this! But if you get too distracted, don't do it.

🩰 NOTION!!!! Notion is SUCH a great and aesthetic website to get organized.

At school ⋆。·˚ʚ 🎀 ɞ˚‧。⋆

🎀 Ribbons. Ribbons are such a coquette staple. Put them on everything! Especially your hair.

🎀 Take cute notes. Make them something you'd like to look back on! Buy yourself a new pack of pink highlighters, write in juicy black pen, doodle bows, use washi tape, whatever you think looks best. Even try and make your homework look pretty. My spanish midterm project was a coquette work of art.

🎀 Look your prettiest. Again with the ribbons--put them in your hair! Wear cute mary janes. Brush your hair. Take a shower before, if you can. Wear a vanilla or rose scented body mist. Put on some cute rings. If you have a uniform, wear a cozy scarf and as much jewelry as you can.

🎀 Books. Bring a book with you everywhere. It will make you look so educated and elegant. Some of my favorites are Little Women, Heaven to Betsy and Betsy in Spite of Herself, Jane Eyre, Sense and Sensibility, Sad Cypress, Death on the Nile, Anne of Green Gables, and Betsy was a Junior and Betsy and Joe. The Betsy books are perfect because each one is about a year in highschool, and they're so coquette and vintage and she's such a study icon and ugh.

🎀 Make good friends. Having a good group of people to motivate and uplift you is sosososo important. Get rid of the ones who hate to see you succeed. And it will make school feel like someplace you're genuinely excited to go to.

🎀 Don't skip classes. Just don't. It's not the vibe.

🎀 Be nice to your teachers. If they really suck then they really suck. But your school year will be so much easier if your teachers like you and know of you as a good student.

🎀 Try and find 'your place'. Not like that. Literally. Try and find a little nook you and your group can claim as your favorite.

🎀 Make your supplies as cute as possible! Get a cute bag or backpack if you can. Pretty stationary will help you romanticize so much. Get rid of the ugly neon yellow pencils.

💌 Find your signature scent, or make it seasonal like I do!

💌 Keep a diary. Fill it with sweet memories, funny pictures of you and your friends, deep quotes, and lipstick kisses.

💌 Get cute frilly socks and dainty jewelry.

💌 Shower every day.

💌 Go thrifting.

💌 Try and take a walk every day, even if it's just up and down your street.

After a quick sniff and sit, of course. And even though you found it in the old section of Witchton, near the historic Black Gables house, you’ll consider yourself lucky. A prize! It goes with all of your other furniture in the same way that everything you own has the same sort of provenance: questionable. You’ll put it next to the fireplace and across from the hand-me-down brown vinyl couch and the lamp you found on trash day three weeks ago.

That night, I slept soundly.

In the morning, there is a painting on my wall. An actual painting. The frame is gold. I’ve never seen it before. My room-mates shrug when I ask about it, but we all agree it’s quite nice, and perhaps even worthy of being in the Gardner Museum. My room-mates like the ‘new’ chair.

The fifth morning, I wake to a fine cup of apple tea, and maple-crisp scones on my nightstand – which is and has been a cardboard box ever since we moved in. When I thank my roommates for such a nice breakfast, they cast quizzical glances over their cold pizza.

It’s only on Monday when they wake up and there’s a feather carpet in the living room that they really start to get weirded out in a ‘are we in danger’ kind of way (and we bicker about what thieves give instead of take), but being poor, we decide to brush it off and find the positive. So, each day, we play a game called ‘find the new thing.’ On Wednesday, Sidone finds a sunflower petal coat in her closet. She can’t stop smiling. She makes us watch as she spins and all of the petals flutter. Four days later we wake to the smell of cranberry waffles, and find a large copper rooster in our kitchen making them. When we ask the rooster gentleman questions, he only answers with ‘Highlings.’ It is the only word he knows. But the waffles are crispy-buttery delicious, and so is the chicken and pumpkin pot-pie the rooster makes for dinner. Only after the Rooster climbs out of the window and falls asleep on the roof do we have a discussion about whether a rooster cooking chicken is cannibalism. Points are raised about the rooster being copper, and it is decided that since the rooster didn’t eat any, it is clearly not cannibalism, but it is suspect.

For months new gifts arrive. We are afforded no answers from the gentleman rooster who we have taken to calling Genty. We wonder about fairy godfathers and rich old couples who remember what it was like to live on toast and count coins. The gifts keep appearing.

Our apartment begins to resemble a fantasy magic shop; there is an amethyst kaleidoscope that Tom thinks can auger the future, seven chandeliers made from butterflies hang from the tiny living room ceiling, and books in unknown languages pack our shelves (to the chagrin of Sidone’s cats who rather liked their hidey-holes amongst the books). We have begun to stack things, to make paths through the whimsical chaos. And we have begun to invite people over solely with the intention to share our bounty, to give away whatever confections Genty has made and to de-clutter our living space.

We take baskets of mittens to the town center; an invitation for anyone to please take as many as they would like. It is our general view that the gifts aren’t ours alone.

Eventually, Genty holds a note in his outstretched copper feathers. It is simply addressed 'Highlings.' An invitation, if we like, to join the Wandering Queendom. It also states that we can refuse, but we must do our best to return all of the gifts. We think of the mittens. Tom mentions the waffles.

There is a deadline. One of us must go.

I am now part of the Wandering Queendom. We live in a somewhat-nice-even-though-there’s-a-small-rip floral wingchair. Some see what we could be, and so we are taken someplace warm, someplace safe for a year. We make beautiful things in gratitude for the shelter, and we invite people to share our magic.
