Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), male (top) and Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) (bottom), taken June 27, 2024, in Georgia, US
Whenever I look at these photos, I always like to put them next to each other to compare. In terms of woodland birds, these two could be considered opposites of one another, being arguably the most famous blue and red birds of North America, at least in the east!
Seeing as these were taken in about the same pose, at the same distance, it's also a good comparison of anatomy and size. I don't think it really hits home how much bigger jays are than cardinals until you see it yourself in person. There was a long period of my childhood that I considered the two equals, and learning that the jay was much larger was a big surprise later on!

Cardinal courtship is so cute! Pairs typically overwinter together and keep the same mate for multiple years! The male will pass food to the female to show he is a good mate, and he will continue to bring her (and the chicks) food once she begins to nest. Female cardinals do all of the incubation but males will spend a lot of time looking for nutritious insects like caterpillars for their chicks.

Animals as giant companions pt 1
Tumblr media
heheeh this is like one of the best things I've ever made- maybe even THE best, lol
@noblyvalentine gave me the idea to use a red male Cardinal (aka male Northern Cardinal), so I declare this the first in le series of giant animal companions!
Please suggest animals!!! (It doesn't have to be real jus something thats easy to tell the appearance of, and please be as specific as possible so I can get the animal right lol)
I have decided to name this Cardinal: Valentino. This is inspired by noblyvalentine's user :P
The human is now named uhhhhhhhhhh- He's named: Asher. yeahhh thats a good name I think
I had tons of fun making this (It was so I could get used to using an art tablet again) so uhhhh yay :D
Okay I'll stop yapping thx for reading and looking at my drawing

Male cardinals are at their reddest now during courting and before the hardships of parenting. You can see them at a distance even in the woods and when they show up in the garden they're by far the brightest color there.

Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), juvenile, taken May 9, 2025, in Georgia, US
A disheveled young cardinal stopping for a few sips! Someone had been in the bath prior and made it absolutely filthy with dirt, but this guy didn't really seem to mind. The bath water is replaced daily, but it tends to get dirty pretty fast if there are lots of baths in a day. The birds could just go to the koi pond literally 5 feet away, but I guess it's too scary for everyone but the song sparrows!
