Books read in March 2024

-Cat Out of Hell by Lynne Truss started and finished on March 1, 2024 - 4/5 stars. Quick read as it was a short book. I enjoyed it. Took me a while to figure that a character was an actual character in the book and not just a made up name.

-Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn started March 3, 2024 and finished March 7, 2024 - 4/5 stars. Who wouldn't want to read a book about retired assassins doing what they do best? I feel like I would have liked it more if I was in my 60s and menopausal.

-Bloodchild and other stories by Octavia Butler started March 8, 2024 and finished March 9, 2024 - 4/5 stars. Octavia Butler had some interesting ideas for Science Fiction. Made me realize I should read more of Octavia Butler and or sci fi by people of color

-The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd started March 9, 2024 and finished March 14, 2024 - 5/5 stars. Great book. The backstory and connection between all the characters was sweet. Make me think about how the situation could have been solved a different way but if it was then the book wouldn't have happened so whatever.

-Africa Risen edited by Sheree Renée Thomas started March 15, 2024 and finished March 20, 2024. - 4/5 stars. Some really cool ass science fiction stories in here. I should check out the authors involved.

-The Book of M by Peng Shepherd started March 20, 2024 and finished March 27, 2024. - 5/5 stars. This book is devastating and so good. I thought it would be just about the man searching for his wife but it was so much more. I thought about this book the next day so thats something. Question: Are you the same person if you have the memories but not the same body?

-Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson started March 28, 2024 and finished March 29, 2024. -4/5 stars. Interesting story. Book was written in an certain way so it took me a while to get used to it. Makes me think I should check out this authors other books.

-A Quantum Love Story by Mike Chen started March 30, 2024. I haven't finished it yet. I have read three other books by this author so I know it's going to be good.

-A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan - The plot sounded interesting to me. I couldn't get into it though.

if you can read all of dungeon meshi and see how it revels in the eroticism of consumption and plays with themes about base instinct, overwhelming desire, loving something so much you want to take it inside you and keep it there forever...if you can read all that and think that the author would be against people sexualizing her characters then I don't know what to tell you. dungeon meshi isn't horny in the way most fantasy animes are horny, but it's a huge fault to think that means it's not horny at all in a more complex and allegorical way. sex is a huge part of human instinct, just like eating, and the wires often get crossed. its that's not a bad thing because sex isn't a bad thing, lol

Of all the theories as to how Carmilla and her daughters found eachother in Hell (adoption, reuniting after they died, one or all three being Hellborn, ect;), I think my personal favorite is the one where Carmilla was either pregnant when she died or later gave birth to a child she miscarried when she was alive.

But whether or not that’s true, one of my favorite crack theories/headcanons about Carmilla being pregnant in Hell is how absolutely weird the other Overlords would be about it- because let’s be real, they would absolutely be weird about it. Maybe supportive and weird, but weird.

Zestial, nervously following Carmilla around: My darling. My own heart. I beg of thou, please, for just a moment.

Carmilla, still stubbornly walking around in her ridiculously sharp shoes: I’M FINE.

Zestial comes to her rescue and shoos Rosie out to go make her some (GINGER) tea before Carmilla can do something she’ll regret.

Alastor, gazing suspiciously: Why on earth is your abdomen moving like that? Is something trying to break out?

Carmilla, too exhausted to deal with this: That movement is my baby kicking, Alastor.

Alastor: Pardon? You mean to tell me that one can see that on the outside? Eugh.

Carmilla, glaring at him: You are so lucky you’re not worth getting up for.

- Rosie insists on throwing her a baby shower. Vox and Alastor get kicked out for fighting and are forced to put together the IKEA furniture for the nursery as punishment.

- I seriously doubt this lot can build and work an ultrasound machine, so something like this is likely.

Carmilla, slowly coming to after giving birth: Mmmh…?

Rosie, happily bouncing one baby in her arms: Oh good, she’s up! Congratulations, sweetie. You have two beautiful daughters 🥰

Carmilla: ….

Zestial, who’s gently cradling the other: Carmilla…? Is something the matter?

Carmilla: …there’s really two of them. I thought I was hallucinating.

Fun fact- some scientists say cats have sensitive enough hearing that they can hear babies’ heartbeats within their mother’s bodies.

wait and another neat thing about stray: the way it ties humanity to class! where do you see the most pro-human sentiment in the game? its in the slums! theres the ‘rip humans <3′ graffiti, the robot that cares for the plants because the humans liked them, and of course you find b-12 near that area as well. its also where all the outsiders came from; the ones that are still able to both dream of and actively work towards a better life for themselves and their loved ones, and all the robots in general. even the enemies in this section of the game are biological in nature.

then you have midtown, the middle-class police state area. suddenly the main enemies are robotic surveillance cameras, not living creatures. this is also where you start to encounter robots that are not friendly, and that will sell each other out for profit. there are also robots that will try to keep you out of certain areas, unlike in the slums where you could mostly go where you pleased. for the most part the robots still tend to be friendly here; but not all of them are altruistic, and there’s no real sense of an overarching community.

and finally, you get to the upper levels, the area for the elites, where the upper class stayed literally above it all to run the city... and theres no one there. there are no people. the robots are just robots: they have no names, they make no conversation, they merely complete their assigned tasks as if nothing has changed. i almost expected to find real humans here, or at least a corpse or something in the control room, but... nothing. there is no humanity, in any form. its a pretty, pristine, wasteland.

but down in the filthy, zurk-infested slums, humanity lives on.
