Ezra Greenleaf Weld Frederick Douglass and Others at Fugitive Slave Law Convention, Cazenovia, New York 1850
“In thinking of America, I sometimes find myself admiring her bright blue sky — her grand old woods — her fertile fields — her beautiful rivers — her mighty lakes, and star-crowned mountains. But my rapture is soon checked, my joy is soon turned to mourning. When I remember that all is cursed with the infernal spirit of slaveholding, robbery and wrong, — when I remember that with the waters of her noblest rivers, the tears of my brethren are borne to the ocean, disregarded and forgotten, and that her most fertile fields drink daily of the warm blood of my outraged sisters, I am filled with unutterable loathing.” Frederick Douglass, “Letter to William Lloyd Garrison” 1846

“Ultimately it comes down to making yourself and the people who can share it with you, in some way, more themselves, to make you more yourself, to make human beings more themselves, and therefore, by extension, better, stronger, more real.”

Day 41: Rest Day
We have a much needed rest day today, in the charming small town of Cazenovia, NY. Our hotel, The Brewster Inn, is on the lake and a short 5 minute walk to the downtown where I joined my fellow riders at the laundromat. The Brewster Inn is a converted 1890 mansion; the rooms are quaint and each is unique and some are more luxurious than others. One of the guides pulled me aside yesterday to let me know that I’d been given the suite with the fireplace, two-person shower and lake view and that it would be best to be discreet and not brag about it at dinner. They weren’t kidding about the room and I was happy to keep my mouth shut.
We’ve been fortunate to have a great group of riders. Though the riding pace differs (yesterday the slowest riders required 90 minutes more than the fastest), everyone gets along and there’s no awkward situations of ‘this person doesn’t want to be seated next to that person’. The group includes 5 physicians (1 still practicing), a nurse anesthetist, a man and woman who ran unrelated multi-billion $ investment funds, a lawyer, a personal financial advisor, an academic, a mortician and a few business people like me. Not surprisingly, these are all highly motivated people and always ready and waiting 10 minutes before every meal and departure. There are a lot of gray hair and wrinkles in the group and if you saw us in street clothes you’d say we are an unlikely bunch to be riding across the country. But everything changes when we put on our biking clothes - now suddenly it becomes apparent that this group is competent on a bike.
There is one exception to the group, however. One of our riders is Lynn Jennings, the bronze medalist in the women’s 10,000 meters track and field at the 1992 Olympics in Atlanta. (Pictured below.) She competed in 3 Olympic Games and although her riding style is a bit unorthodox, it is obvious that she was a world class athlete.
Today’s weather has been dominated by intermittent showers (perfect for napping), with dry spells long enough for me to walk downtown. Tomorrow looks to be dry in the morning with showers late in the afternoon. The bikes and my rain gear were cleaned today, so hopefully the rain will hold off until after we’ve arrived.
