Meet William Chaloner

A conman at heart, Chaloner is willing to do just about anything to make some money all while pertaining a mask of innocence. He can read people fairly well, and use that to his advantage. Despite his cunning ways, he does let his pride get the better of him, especially when it pertains with that Warden of the Royal Mint, Issac Newton.

He doesn’t live with the other vampires and bites his thumb at Issac whenever he sees him out and about. Even after all these centuries, those two hate each other and they still fight in public.

William Chaloner was many a thing during his most active years. A nailing apprentice. A bawdy pocket watch seller [among other things]. A quack doctor selling faux cures to plague victims. And a ‘fortune teller’ who would tell patrons where their stolen belongings were, for a price of course. And a used clothing seller.Tried conning the Bank of England as well. But what he’s best known for is his rap sheet with the Royal Mint and its warden, Sir Issac Newton.

Within his first year of producing counterfeit coins, he had already amassed a fortune and bought himself a house, a carriage to ride in, and clothing befitting a gentleman. He was briefly married for a short stint, but had to flee town due to being a person of interest in a robbery.

He repeatedly tried conning the Royal Mint. His first ploy was to pretend to be just a concerned citizen and bringing up questions about the Mint’s reputation with the amount of counterfeiting. But in January of 1696 he was taken in for questioning and he pointed the finger at the Mint for producing counterfeit coins, questioning the integrity of the people working there. “I never made a guinea in my life,” but he had, and had gotten rich because of this. He also tried to persuade the Mint to hire him, but never was accepted. 

Issac got tired of Chaloner escaping justice and eventually had a watertight investigation done on him. He even made sure a ‘hanging judge’ was the one overseeing the trial to ensure that Chaloner didn’t get away from him again. While in court Chaloner accused everyone of perjury, and thus put the blame on him in order to save their own necks. He also pretended to go mad while locked up, but that didn’t fool Newton. In the end, William Chaloner was found guilty of treason, for the act of counterfeiting coins.

He mainly makes an honest living nowadays, but he still has that mischievous streak in him. Once he sees Issac out in the street he goes back into counterfeiting currency, and it's an entire benny hill scene, and you're caught up in the middle of this mess. Chaloner hates Newton because 'the bloke' tried to get him executed, whereas Newton hates Chaloner because the man tried to make a fool out of him. He throws apples at Newton, and Issac throws rope at Chaloner; it's a mutual relationship.

I knew that Chaloner was a forger, but I had no idea he was a sex toy salesman as well. That’s hilarious, and would no doubt make him twice as degenerate in Newton's eyes.

It’s a brief, interesting read, despite the click-baity title. As always, though, it suffers from the author making jabs at Newton’s celibacy, neglecting to look at the bigger picture.

Was he way too hard on himself for experiencing the same carnal desires as any other man? I would say so, yes. But the way I see it, Newton left enough gifts to the world just in his youth and, if anything, we might never have had the chance to appreciate them had he been off drinking and whoring on the reg like so many of his peers preferred to do in their spare time.

But that’s not all! He took his position at the Mint seriously. He didn’t spend all that time hunting down and sending to the gallows counterfeiters and clippers who shaved down coins to melt down and resell as bullion (fact: this is why we have ridges on the rims of coins now—a Newtonian invention the author conveniently overlooks) simply to keep his comfy job that paid 16 times more than his sinecure as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

He did it because he understood that a direct attack on the currency was a major way to undermine the entire country, which was particularly dangerous during the French War.

Newton was a true patriot, so cut the man some slack.

For a number of years now, the Nassaudag has been held on the second day of Pentecost to commemorate the connection between Breda and the Nassau's.

The bond between the Nassau House and the Netherlands came into being in 1403. Count Engelbrecht I of Nassau married Johanna van Polanen, wife of Breda, in that year. Due to their growing family ownership, Bredase Nassaus quickly became one of the highest nobles in our country. They were also given increasingly important functions by the Dukes of Burgundy and Habsburg, which ruled large parts of the Netherlands as landlords. Count Henry III of Nassau (1483-1538), for example, held high civil and military offices. He was also involved in the education of Emperor Charles V. The Nassaus lived for one hundred and fifty years at the Castle of Breda. In this period they provided the impetus for Breda's prosperity and brought the city to development. The nobility who lived on the Castle of Breda worked as a magnet on the art sector, jewellery, design and architecture.

If you think of the Nassaus, you think of the royal house. The House of Orange-Nassau was first mentioned in 1544. William I, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg (1533-1584) - better known as William of Orange or William of Silence - then inherited the Southern French principality of Orange from his nephew René of Chalon (officially René Count of Nassau and Prince of Chalon-Orange). As Prince William he is the ancestor of the House of Orange-Nassau. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

De adel die op het Kasteel van Breda woonde, werkte als een magneet op de kunstsector, edelsmederij, design en architectuur.

Wie aan de Nassaus denkt, denkt aan het koningshuis. Het Huis Oranje-Nassau werd voor het eerst genoemd in 1544. Willem I, graaf van Nassau-Dillenburg (1533-1584) – beter bekend als Willem van Oranje of Willem de Zwijger – erfde toen het Zuid-Franse prinsdom Orange van zijn neef René van Chalon (officieel René graaf van Nassau en prins van Chalon-Oranje). Als prins Willem is hij de stamvader van het Huis Oranje-Nassau.

Ann Almy Sampler

Wrought in the "English style", the elegant band format found on the needlework sampler embroidered by Ann Almy belongs to the earliest group of Newport, Rhode Island samplers worked between the 1720's through the late 1760's. The Almy sampler is documented in the book "American Samplers" by Boston and Coe. Ann Almy was the daughter of William Almy and Elizabeth Cranston born in 1722. She married Walter Chaloner in Trinity Church on July 28, 1743. He was commander of Fort George and then High Sheriff of the British colony of Rhode Island. The Chaloners' were loyalists to the English crown and evacuated to Nova Scotia, Canada as refugees of the American Revolution. From there they moved to St. John's, New Brunswick where he then became Justice of the Peace. Together they were parents of ten children. Ann passed away in 1808 in Canada and is buried in St. John's.
