Battery Powered Rambler American, c. 1970.

AMC started working on battery-powered cars in the 1950s already, with a hybrid car project run jointly between AMC and Sonotone (the hearing aid manufacturer). This wasn't exactly new. Electric cars are older than internal combustion engines, and hybrid power sources were used in small warships in the 1890s already. But the auto industry is infamously resistant to change.

In the 60s, AMC partnered with Victor Wouk (considered to be the father of modern hybrids) to figure out how to use lithium in batteries to power a car. It didn't happen: lithium ion batteries wouldn't be figured out for some time, despite everyone and NASA trying to figure them out. Instead, they produced a 1969 Rambler American Station Wagon with a trunk full of Ni-Cad cells.

That is not this car. It IS a 1969 American, but clearly a two door.

Globe Electric (of Milwaukee) made a deal with Sears to sell automotive and radio batteries through the Sears Catalog in 1924. Rising demand convinced one of the owners of Globe to start the Union Battery Company (in Chicago) a year later. The two companies were merged in 1929. And rapidly became the largest manufacturer of replacement car batteries in the country. They remained the largest when they merged with Johnson Controls in 1978. Globe-Union was also, after a 1961 deal, the OEM supplier for AMC.

It's unclear what role AMC had in this car, but it set the Milwaukee Mile lap record for an electric car in October 1970.

'Swifties' flock to movie theaters for record-breaking 'Eras' film

Taylor Swift fans sporting friendship bracelets and glittery cowboy boots packed into early screenings of the pop megastar's concert film at movie theaters across the United States on Thursday.

"I love every Swiftie. I think we're all very connected," she said, referring to the nickname adopted by Swift's fiercely loyal fanbase.

Shot during three recent sold-out Los Angeles shows, the film contains no interviews, commentary or behind-the-scenes footage.

Instead, the film's demand relies on drawing fans who missed out on tickets to the actual tour, or want to relive the phenomenon again, up close and alongside fellow obsessives.

In the concession line before the first screening in Century City, a pair of teenage girls arrived carrying a bag stuffed with friendship bracelets, which they handed out to fellow Swifties.

The colorful, beaded accessories have become a key part of "Eras" fandom, with concertgoers creating and swapping bracelets bearing references to their favorite Swift lyrics and quotes.

The Midwest-based Marcus Theatres has even promised "friendship bracelet making stations" at its screenings.

Almost all the moviegoers at Century City on Thursday had been to see the live shows already, and many were planning repeat viewings at the multiplex.

"I'm coming to four screenings, and I saw the concert three times," said Amber Eaves, 33.

"It was the best concert experience I've ever been to... I was crying the entire time, I had makeup streaming down my face," said Kasey Longstreet, 24. "It was such a special night that I wanted to come back and see it again."

Domestic opening weekend box office estimates are as high as $150 million -- a record for a concert film, and numbers comparable to this summer's reigning smash hit movie, "Barbie."

Theaters -- still recovering from the pandemic, and faced with a dearth of new movies thanks to the ongoing Hollywood strikes -- were also cashing in on demand for Swift merchandise Thursday.

AMC charged $19.89 -- a reference to Swift's album "1989" -- for Swift-branded popcorn tins.

Staff reported fans arriving since the morning just to purchase empty soda cups, at the full price of $11.99. Some left with the maximum five cups allowed per movie ticket.

The movie had been set to hit screens Friday, but the singer announced on Wednesday that "due to unprecedented demand," preview screenings would begin a day earlier.

"I'm already going this weekend, but when she dropped this at the last second, I was like, 'I gotta go after work, oh my god," said Eaves. "It's just gonna be one of those cultural phenomenons that you can look back and say 'I was a part of that.'"

Unhappy Hour

Price increases are one of the most painful things we consumers endure, and we sure have had to endure a lot of them the last couple of years. We have had sticker shock at the grocery, and in other cases, realized it wasn’t our imagination that while the shelf price did not go up, the package had shrunk.

No matter what, it sucks, because wages and salaries always lag inflationary pressures on price. But when the price increase looks more like a tax on good times, then it hurts even more. Like with what is happening at about 800 pubs in the UK. Stonegate, a giant among pub owners, has about 4500 different pubs under its corporate umbrella, and under several operating names. Now comes word it is going to implement surge pricing on beer during peak hours at selected pubs.

And people are crying in their last cheap pint of it.

Surge pricing, which also goes by the name of peak pricing or dynamic pricing, is the concept of raising prices when demand is highest. And Stonegate wants to add on 20 pence (or about $0.25US) per pint at busy times, like at its Slug & Lettuce chain. It may not seem like much, but I have seen London pubgoers having a good time before. It could easily add $1-$2 per bar tab.

Prices will remain as-is during the off-hours, so perhaps people will be encouraged to engage in day drinking and other such off-peak hours. As for the folks who want to drink when everyone else is (and through no fault of their own, thanks to work/life schedules), it feels like they have been sucker-punched.

Now before you throw the baby out with the beer water, consider that we have been confronted with surge pricing here in the States for years. It’s just that the sellers don’t package it as baldly as Stonegate is doing. Ever noticed how a matinee theatre ticket is much cheaper than, say, a Friday night ticket? Or how airline tickets and hotel stays are more expensive on weekends, but cheaper other days?

Yup. Take, for example, my recent visit to Northern New Mexico. On Thursday night, my room at the Hotel Don Fernando de Taos was only $110. For Friday and Saturday nights, it was roughly double. And pity anyone who wants to fly somewhere on a Friday and return on Sunday.

But then there was the case of AMC Theatres who, earlier this year, started charging more for prime seats. That landed with a thud, and they nixed the plan. You know. Just when people are starting to return to the theatre, raise the prices on the good seats. Nope, nope, nope. It’s a theatre, not an arena. They are all good seats, except for the first two rows.

I have also seen petrol stations in Germany use dynamic pricing, with higher prices at the morning commute time, as well as the return in afternoon. During the day, prices are lower. Unless you are unemployed, retired, or working midnight shift, you will never get your fuel cheaper (and right now it’s running about $7.48US per gallon). Still, the Germans tolerate it, my friends tell me.

Stonegate could have executed this better, because they are coming out looking like the bad guy. Consider the global naysaying and commenting. I suspect that Stonegate will only tolerate the negative fallout for so long, and will have to walk it back. I don’t buy the surcharge as enabling them to have more workers. That should be a given, and paid for by the added sales that were already in place because of the peak. Please don’t push the burden of paying even more staffers on the backs of your most loyal customers.

Just raise prices across the board 10 pence and call it good. That will probably be a few pence below the JND, or Just Noticeable Difference. That’s how you raise prices. Small bumps go unnoticed or are just not worrisome. But a big one always is.

Surge pricing is a fact of life. I get it. Just don’t make it a hard pill to swallow. Because if my favorite rehydration station—Pondaseta Brewing in Amarillo—were to do something like what Stonegate is doing, I’d just stay home.

Saturday night in Watertown was fun. After leaving the coffee shop in the morning I walked around, seeing which small bars I’d like to visit that evening. At one of them I had lunch. The bartenders were nice people.

That evening, after her tournament was over, I brought Sheila back with me. A bartender from earlier was still there. This time she was on our side of the bar. She was amused that I returned with my wife. The off-duty bartender was drinking a Spicy Pickle Monster sour ale. Though I’d ordered a different beer, as soon as I saw the can I declared I needed a Spicy Pickle Monster ale. Sheila took my beer so I could have one. It was good.

At lunch I saw these two guys. They were still there at 5:30 PM. I would not have gambled they’d be standing by 7 PM though. One clearly had an internal struggle, between drinking another 16 oz. can of beer and going out in the cold for a smoke. He held an unlit cig, sometimes putting it to his lips. Busch Light 1, Marlboro, 0. The picture is intentionally blurry, as I was trying to evoke what those two would see in a mirror.

At the second bar we chatted with a hilarious, outspoken bartender. Picture Max from Two Broke Girls. Another couple sat by us. The five of us had a great time talking.

I had a Diet Coke there (had to drive later). Sheila selected a delightful American light beer. The tab for both was $2.75. That low price got me tingly all over.

For a tip I did mental math. 28 x 2 = 56. Dilemma: I didn’t have two quarters, a nickel and a penny. My wife didn’t care for my calculation, pointing out the bartender had opened a can of Shiner Pickle Seltzer for all of us to sample (no charge) after hearing me talk about Spicy Pickle Monster. Impressing my lady, I left a fiver as I wondered, would we find another pickle flavored beverage at the next bar? Was this some sort of promotion for the local pickleball tournament?

As we walked to the next bar we passed this vintage AMC Concord station wagon. I like the sign on the door. Does Watertown have a thriving hipster population? Is my federal government trying to make the most of our money by keeping a 42-year-old car in service? What official business was happening at 7 PM on a Saturday night?

Next we walked to a nice steakhouse for dinner. I enjoyed a smoked Manhattan with my meal. Didn’t get any pictures. I don’t think one of the bartenders would have liked it. Picture Darlene from The Connors. We watched the bartenders make a few of them. Made me want my own culinary torch.

Finally we ended up at a local brewery. This place had a really nice food menu as well as a healthy beer list. If I get back to this city that’s where I’ll eat dinner for sure. Sheila and I talked to the owner as we had a beer and tasted some samples he gave us.

We assembled a mix-pack to bring home. Tonight, as we watch the Packers game, I’m drinking Betty’s Breakfast Stout in honor of my mom. She didn’t drink beer, would have hated a stout, but she did eat breakfast, and her name was Betty.

Last note: Sheila and her partner finished in 2nd place in the pickleball women’s division. She wore her medal out to the bars and restaurant, hoping for a free drink. That made me so proud. A guy at the first bar wanted to buy her a PBR, if she sat with him. Good think she declined, because she would have missed out on the Spicy Pickle Monster sour ale.

Electric Avenue

The history of the electric car in the US is a road of many miles, but sadly, it is one that has repeated pot holes, speed bumps, detours, and even a Dead End sign or two. But still this road goes on, seemingly through a jungle without trace of clearing, forging ahead with a machete and a flashlight.

Electric cars predate the internal combustion engine we take for granted today, having become practical by the 1870s. They then fell into disfavor as gasoline became the preferred means of making cars go, until the 1970s when the Arab oil embargoes caused Americans to rethink everything. Manufacturers like AMC and Ford had tiny EVs (electric vehicles) that allowed people to avoid paying what would be $4 a gallon in today’s dollars.

The 1990s saw GM enter the fray with the EV1, only to pull it rather suspiciously, and recall and destroy what was on the road. Hybrids found their stride in the early 2000s, combining gas and electric for high MPG efficiency, followed by GM with its all-electric Volt, and Nissan with its all-electric Leaf.

The only serious company to have a modicum of success, though, is Tesla, which now boasts four models on its website (Model X, Model S, Model 3, and Roadster), although the company recently announced a major setback and laid off seven-percent of its workforce. Shares of Tesla stock then plummeted 20%.

In the wake of this, though, is Ford’s announcement of an all-electric F-150. Tesla and others are rumored to have pickups in development as well.

Now before I start the critique, please know that I am strongly in favor of EVs. It’s just that their premium pricing, and, in most cases, somewhat limited range (three of the four Teslas are less than 335 miles on one charge), and they just become less than practical for a person like me. Yes, Tesla has worked hard to install a network of charging stations along the nation’s interstates, but it is still like trying to find gas a hundred years ago.

If EVs were solely for commuting, that would be one thing, because they could be charged easily overnight. But on 1000-mile road trips like I take, I really do not want to have to go down for an hour every 300 miles or less just to “fill ‘er up.” At night is one thing while I am asleep, but otherwise I am a blur during daylight.

And let’s not forget that premium pricing. With most EVs running at least $10,000 more than their ICE (internal combustion engine) counterparts, it would take a long way to reach payback. For example, if you can optimistically assume 50mpg equivalence (and good luck with that), with the current national gas price average of $2.25, it would take 222,222 miles of gasoline savings to pay for the marginal price of the vehicle.

And never mind expensive battery replacements, which, like on the hybrid Toyota Prius, run about $6000 every five years. That requires another 133,333 miles of driving during that battery’s life just to pay for it.

Did I say I like EVs? Yes, I did. Really. I do. It’s just that unless your blood runs green, you better be prepared to pay dearly for the privilege of lessening your fossil fuel footprint.

Which brings us to the F-150. You probably though I had forgotten, right? Frankly, I am surprised at the introduction of pickups as EVs. They are not practical commuter vehicles, especially in busy urban areas. They are already expensive to begin with, so adding the EV premium will put them in the league of the classy Tesla Model X and Model S. So much for making these things accessible to the masses.

Given that trucks are often used for hauling and/or towing, what kind of range will they have? All the extra weight will certainly bring down that number. Oh, and let’s not forget that out in West Texas, pickups are often work vehicles, meaning on farm and ranch. Seen any recharging stations lately out in the country?

Bravo to Ford for at least working toward an EV future for America. It is a good thing. That said, I think the effort would have been better spent in trying to keep developing batteries with longer range, and EVs at much lower prices. Right now, between the high price of EVs and the insanely low price of gasoline, this is a hard sell unless hugging trees is your passion.

I mean no disrespect to my friends who own Teslas and other EVs. I honor and respect you. I just wish the auto makers would honor and respect the rest of us by making these things practical for all.
