ATTENTION DPS FANS: i’m rewriting the Dead Poets Society book right now! I just finished the first scene in the chapel with the four pillars and where Neil and Todd talk to Nolan with their parents. I’m taking script from the actual movie and book but improvising it. This will transcend the book, END HAPPILY (no neil death, no fired keating, no expelled charlie), and go on through their sophomore, junior, and senior years because I want this to be very long! It will be Neil/Todd-centric with ships of temporary Knox/Chris, endgame Knox/Charlie, Ginny/Chris, and Meeks/Pitts. It is on ao3 under @/mqddiegh. Neil and Todd will meet in Chapter 2!

the second neil shows up on screen, he hasn’t even spoken yet: “oh that man is gay”

What each poet would do to relax after a study session (AKA things I do)

And yes one of my dear friends will see this and yes I am trying to relax (medieval lit I am coming for you)

Todd- crotchet. He is now my forever crotchet partner (or any craft partner tbh)! He would for sure crotchet things for others and do it whilst he's listening to music or watching a movie. If he has the energy for it he would write as well (more to just write and let himself melt into the pages as he writes in his journal).

Neil- watch movies ESPECIALLY OLD HOLLYWOOD MOVIES. He would see himself performing like James Dean or Humphrey Bogart and then daydream about acting as (TW) Mr Perry barges into his room and tells him off for not revising and 'slacking around'.

Pitts- BAKE BAKE BAKE. Pitts is an amazing baker and I thank that person who came up with that idea every day. He would bake for others and for himself as a way to destress after an intense study session. (I baked some cookies and they looked HORRIBLE but were so lovely!!)

Charlie- go to the student union and play the most random songs that there are on the list. Probably order something from the coffee section or the alcohol section of the bar and shit post, maybe even go to town and play careless whispers lmao

Cameron- He would watch 5 hour video essays on philosophy topics (and yes I did watch a 2 hour video on every political ideology). Probably would yap about it or use it in his future essays!

Knox- go to the beach and mourn and yearn Chris. thats the canon!

Dead Poets Society sibling head canons:

Pitts gives the vibe of guy with a bunch of sisters. I think he’s got two older ones and two younger ones. He just gives big family and middle child vibes.

I think Meeks is an only child and is slightly envious of Pitts big family.

I feel like Todd and Jeffery are the only kids the Andersons have

I think Charlie either has an older brother or older sister but the age gap between them is fairly large. I also think that sibling isn’t super close with the family anymore because of their parents. I also think maybe Charlie looked up to them until they left and their leaving hurt Charlie.

If Neil doesn’t die he would remain an only child and if he did then his parents wouldn’t have another one after.

Cameron was an only child for a long time but his parents recently had a baby girl. At first Cameron would be a little awkward interacting with the baby but takes his job as older brother really seriously.

Keating definitely had an older brother.

Knox feels like an only child or he has a younger brother who gets on his nerves a lot.

DPS: “Tortured Lovers”

I saw someone the other day say that Todd and Knox are both tortured lovers and I found that super interesting. I don’t think it’s a reach at all, I think they both represent the spectrum of love and heartbreak with their own respective relationships.

I think Knox and Todd both start out quite similarly in that they are both in love with someone they can’t have. Knox was in love with Chris who had a boyfriend and no real interest in him. Todd was in love with Neil which was doomed to fail one way or another.

They were both tortured for the exact same reason, they couldn’t be with the person they loved but I think they also represent the different kinds of tortured lovers if that even makes sense. They both start the film enamoured and eventually form relationships (one cannon, one heavily implied) and they behave similarly. Todd and Knox are mutually tortured lovers, both resorting to pining and hoping. But their biggest split is during the play.

The play, obviously, changes the entire film. Knox gets the girl, whilst Todd still watches and ultimately, Neil kills himself. Both of their relationships end so differently but they’re still tied together by the title of “tortured lovers”. Todd has to live without Neil, but Knox has to be with Chris quietly.

I just want to take a moment to kind of highlight Knox secretly being with Chris because even though it’s only a short clip of them together, it reminds me vaguely of Neil and Todd - the prospect of hiding away behind a crowd with the person you love so you don’t face negativity.

In a way, Knox and Todd remain as tortured lovers throughout the entire film but with entirely different endings to their stories. I think that just goes to show how succinct the film is in capturing all angles of love under one umbrella.

Their favorite fruit and why

Neil ; pears, once he was sick and the only thing he could eat that didn’t hurt his throat was pears. But he also kinda got disgusted bc he took a bite out of an unripe one and it was like biting a rock

Todd ; oranges, his ass is NEVER getting scurvy let me tell you that. He really enjoys citrusy fruits, oranges being his favorite; he likes them because they’re sweet and sour at the same time.. he also likes clementines (same thing!)

Meeks ; pineapple, Meeks is a really weird guy, he learned he was slightly allergic to pineapple one day and just made it his goal to not be? So he would eat ungodly amounts of pineapple to help his body not die??

Pitts ; coconut, he thinks they taste like nothing but enjoys them anyways. He thinks it’s like eating soggy cardboard and he likes that for whatever reason.

Knox ; cherry, he thinks they’re “romantic” or some shit. He also really likes the taste, he also likes how they stain his lips and give him a small lip tint (GAY). I also think he would enjoy grapes just for the fact he would feed them to his partner like those one scenes in movies.

Cameron ; kiwi, he likes the taste and how the seeds crunch?? Idk he’s weird

Charlie ; watermelon, he isn’t that big on fruit but he likes watermelon because they don’t have a strong taste
