Hot Duke Summer: Regency Historical Romance Anthology

An anthology of never-before published novellas. What a cute Summer read; it didn't take long to finish each story which is perfect for Summer when I seem to always be on the go. Taking a bit of time for myself was easier to do with each being a short story. I'm always up for a historical romance involving a hot duke. While each story is a standalone some fit into a series if you're interested in reading more of a particular author.

A few of the stories weren't up to par for me. Vering off the historically correct path a bit is ok, but I prefer not to go so far that it's unbelievable. A couple weren't interesting. I don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment or bias you unkindly to a story you might think is grand. I'm going to pick my favorite to give you a taste of the material.

Love is the Duke's Best Remedy by Sara Adrien. A play on Pretty Woman and a bit of Cinderella. I've never read any of this authors work and was pleasantly surprised by how well the plot moved along, the dialog was enjoyable, the characters likeable. Edmund and Lola are our couple with Brewster as the bad guy lawyer. For me using the plot of the movie as the basis for the story worked, with a few changes it fit into Regency England without too much fuss. Edmund can't sleep, Lola grows flowers and herbs to sell at an apothecary, Brewster is a mover-and-shaker lawyer using Edmund as his pawn in deals to make himself rich. One of the tweaks is Lola's job. The Cinderella aspect has a bit of a twist but it also works. There're mean shopkeepers, rubies, opera, and a brown polka-dot dress. I loved it.

An Historical Romance Collection

Ten haunted historical romance novellas collected in one volume are a perfect way to get to know new authors or spend time with the writings of already favorite authors. Whether you sit down to read the book straight through or read them spaced out over time you will be in for a treat as you find a haunting of one sort or another in this collection.

The stories include ghosts ranging from angry to helpful with some from the distant past and others more recently departed. I have listed the stories with the authors who wrote them below and have included a short note with the stories I completed reading.

The Last Offer by Chasity Bowlin

Look what do you want? It's a simple, near predictable almost trashy regency romance novella. The plot is woven in well the characters are likable enough. Personally, I think the character choices for Olivia were brilliant. It is a pleasant change to see a heroine embracing her fallen status and saying you know what f*** you all I will have my male companion then. At 25 Miss Olivia Dunne has so much spunk and joy for the world. She is aware of her place in it, aware she has fallen as low as she can within her rank and is now trying to figuring out how to live within her new situation. Regardless of everything else she does love her brother Algernon. Thankful for him for saving her from total disgrace even if she is unaware of the full story. Seven years her senior, Lord Burke, Viscount Holland is the long term friend of the Dunnes, he has been in love with Olivia for years. After asking Algie's permission to seek Olivia's hand and being denied their relationship turns somewhat adversarial. As a character, Burke is a wonderful passionate leading man. He does have one of my favourite lines in the story. "That’s an excuse that you’ve seized upon because, I think… a part of you savors the freedom of being a ruined woman". This is just a somewhat insightful line, or as insightful as you get in a trashy novella at least. To me at least they are a good couple. Olivia is the kind of woman who needs an intellectual equal and someone who respects her character. Burke needs someone who wants him for him, not any connections he may bring. They can stop help each other in various ways, also blessed be it's a love much.

“Did you kill him, then?” Mrs. Carlton asked. “No,” Olivia replied. “He died on his own… of disappointingly natural causes.” Dismayed, Mrs. Carlton replied, “Oh. That is rather a let down.” Burke rolled his eyes. “We could delay our departure long enough for you to abuse his corpse if you wish.” “Really, my lord! You act as if we’re the blood-thirsty ones in this business!” — Mrs Wilhelmina Carlton, Miss Olivia Dunne and Lord Burke

Wilhelmina Carlton was unexpected. The lines that made me laugh the hardest were hers. Mrs Carlton, as she is always referred, is hired by Olivia as a female companion from an agency that specialises in fallen women (as employees but also as clients). I really hope that sort of agency actually existed in 1816. She's a combination of the modern woman and the comic relief. In a way, she is also the voice of emotion to Olivia's internal voice of reason. I really like this sort of character in historical fiction they can break some of the tension, or just dumb between the two main characters. In this case, it's more a will you two just talk already. While I did enjoy this story I'm unlikely to read more in this series but it did suit my needs during my 90-minute commutes. It will become forgettable. But sometimes that is what you need.

I've gotta read 3 ARCs this month and I wanna get back into Highlanderpalooza but I also need to interrupt my regularly scheduled bullshit for Halloweeeeeeeen reads

With that in mind, I'm gonna read (maybe review? Maybe liveblog?) the following:

The League of Gentlewomen Witches by India Holton--more historical fantasy romance, this time with witches while maintaining the pirates!!! Have started this and it already has the prim and proper witch heroine being all "Louise Belcher with a boy band" about this pirate guy, so. Promising stuff.

Her Halloween Treat by Tiffany Reisz--not my usual thing because it's all "heroine returns to small town and reconnects with old friend" but I've heard it's very autumnal, very iconic, and very hot. Also, that title.

Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert--I want werewolves and this is a novella so why not.

The Haunting of A Duke by Chasity Bowlin--Regency medium heroine and maybe a ghooooost?

She looks me up and down, her light eyes traveling all over my body. "Both of those things are going to kill you, ya know? Fifteen thirty five."

"So will old age, but at least I'll enjoy these." I quirk my eyebrows at her, as I slide sixteen bucks across the counter. "Unless you wanna give me something else to enjoy." This is the first time I've blatantly flirted with her like this, and I don't even know what makes me do it right now. Other than the fact I need to feel like something other than a father working his ass off, and she appears to need something other than this damn job.

Her head tilts to the side. Tongue goes out to lick her lips. "You keep playing your cards right, Chevy and I might."

I snort loudly, laughing at the guts she possesses. "You know my name's Ford, and if I'm lucky maybe you'll be screaming it one day soon." With those words, I turn on my heel and walk toward the door.

"What about your change?"

I turn back to face her. "Keep it safe for me. If I ever need something, I'll ask for it back."

She takes the coins out of the register and slides them in her pocket. "All you have to do is ask."

Night of Lyons

A book to be savored, one story at a time. All stories are linked together by a masked ball held by Bessie Dove-Lyon – The Black Widow – a magnificent matchmaker and one not to be crossed.

This is a wonderful way to read authors that you know and love and as in my case, read many authors I have not read before. I am more than halfway through the collection and each one provides romance although no couple that comes together is quite like the couple found before or after in the book.

A woman desperate NOT to marry the man her stepfather chose for her saved by a man of honor.

A story of a father’s pride that left his daughter and wife destitute but saved in the end.

A woman that, in thanking someone she admired, found her future.

A second chance romance for an ex-dragoon and his commander’s daughter.

A brother that almost lost the woman he was meant to by wearing a disguise to the ball.

Sisters learn more about their past and find more than their husband’s when masks are removed.

There are more stories to read but…need to post this and will read more later. This is a book I can see reading a story from a day…or perhaps more than one, if time permits.

The Lyon’s Den Connected World is a varied and wonderful series that I look forward to reading more from and know that one more of the stories will appeal to you, too.

My Review:

I love the sparks between Troy and Lizzie! If you read the first book in the Bellehaven Hotties series, you met these characters. They weren't the stars of the show, but they were star-adjacent, so we got to learn a lot about them. With the way they butted heads, I fully expected their story to be full of fire, and Chasity Bowlin and Laramie Briscoe deliver. Troy and Lizzie have some history, and their romance touches on the forbidden, but darned if they aren't good together.

Like the first in the series, Locked Up One Night is a quick read, and this one has even less angst, so it's definitely an easy read. The chemistry is so good between this pair. Right from the start, I was rooting for them. I also liked getting to visit the couple from the first book, as well as so many of the secondary characters. So, it's like another trip to Bellehaven!

So, another quick, entertaining read in the series, and this pair definitely generates some steam. This book picks up right where the first left off, so I'd recommend reading the series in order to get the most out of it.
