Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 2/27-3/5/2023

-The Sea Beast (2022, dir. Chris Williams) This was beyond fun. I'll admit my bias towards pirate-y/sailor-y stuff up front, but even aside from that this was just an amazingly crafted, beautifully animated film with a well-told story. The characters are well voice-acted and vibrantly full of character and life. Jared Harris' Captain Crow in particular was fantastic. This really gave me the vibes of the best animated adventure films from the 90s; it had that sense of wonder and heart that the film's from my childhood did and it struck a chord, for sure. Plus, any film that points out how history books might not be completely trustworthy if the ones holding the power are the ones that wrote the books is a win from me. The only reasons this isn't getting a full 10/10 is because of a few small plot devices that aren't explored fully and the fact that the story isn't anything super new or groundbreaking. Anyone who sees that this is nominated for an Oscar and thinks "why the hell is this here?" clearly hasn't seen it and I recommend that you do so immediately. -Rocky (1976, dir. John G. Avildsen) [REWATCH] I've started a Rocky-thon of sorts in order to prepare to go see Creed III, so naturally, first up would be the original 1976 Best Picture winner. The story of street-kid Rocky Balboa's one-in-a-million chance at becoming a professional boxer almost mirrors writer/lead actor Sylvester Stallone's own journey in getting this very film made, and there is a ton to like about Rocky, even outside of the amazing final scene where he fights Apollo Creed for the first (but most certainly not the last, as we've all come to find out) time. The cinematic brilliance of that final fight and subsequent shouting of "ADRIAN!!" cannot be underplayed. No spoilers, of course (although if you're over the age of 20 and have never seen Rocky before, what are you even doing?). I think my biggest issue with the film is it feels very meandering in its first 90 minutes, even by character study standards, which this most definitely is. You get a feel for who Rocky is as a person pretty early on, then the rest is just watching him mumble-through awkward encounters with Talia Shire's Adrian until, miraculously, that blossoms into a relationship. I just had a hard time connecting with Rocky from a personality level, not to even mention the machismo that will continue to plague the franchise well into its lifespan. Also, and I'll get more into this in my other Rocky reviews, but I really, really don't like Paulie. He served a purpose in this film, but man, I've spent four films wishing someone would just deck him. I'm never gonna knock someone for liking Rocky and thinking it's amazing, because a lot of it is, but I found too much lacking in it to give it higher than the score I gave it. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.

-Rocky II (1979, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] Onto the second installment in this all-time classic franchise, and this time there's a rematch. Personally, the story in Rocky II, that is to say the first 90 minutes of film prior to the big fight, interested me way more than the original. Seeing Rocky struggle with the aftermath of success, and the aftermath of short-lived wealth was so compelling. The dichotomy of wanting to live a quiet, peaceful life with your partner and build something away from the quite dangerous world of boxing with the pull of this thing that has been your world for so long, this thing that is your true calling, made for a much more interesting film than the first. Combining that with an increased presence of Burgess Meredith, who was, without question, the best part of the entire film, had me more invested in the narrative through line of Rocky II more so than I ever was in Stallone's first outing. However, where Rocky II falters is in its attempts to recapture the magical moments of the original film. The training montage in this one is, frankly, just silly, and running up all those steps doesn't seem quite as impressive when a thousand children have also just followed you up there and don't look any worse for wear than you do. The fight at the end of the film, while still not bad, isn't nearly what the first film's was. I've heard fans of the franchise say that the fight in this one is one of the best parts of the film, but I just couldn't get hyped up like I was during Rocky's first match with Apollo Creed. Also, Paulie, who I already hated, has lost his purpose for existing in this world outside of to just be an annoyance and something to be tolerated and worked around, and he continues to be this in an ever-worsening way in the future installments. Overall, a better story, but worse in all of the places that made the first film iconic. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.

-Cocaine Bear (2023, dir. Elizabeth Banks) I won't dwell on this too long, as I posted a full review earlier on in the week. This movie is exactly what it advertises itself as, which is a fun, schlocky romp through B-movie horror-comedy territory. Plenty of vibe-conforming bad CGI and gory bits to please any and everyone who saw the trailer and thought "Well, I gotta see that!" Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. are all great, but Christian Convery is the true Cocaine Bear MVP. My complaints with it are more with the editing and the technical end of things, as well as not being the biggest fan of the film's surprisingly half-boring first act. This one is a fun, wacky, and harmless distraction of a film and I had a blast in the theater watching it. Score: 7/10 Only in theaters. Read my full review here.

-A House Made of Splinters (2022, dir. Simon Lereng Wilmont) This documentary about a temporary children's shelter located just a handful of kilometers away from the Ukraine/Russia war's front lines is heartbreaking and, at times, an incredibly tough watch. It shows a consequence of any war that doesn't necessarily always get a light shined on it, which makes this something truly unique. The Ukraine conflict almost exists only as a backdrop. It is clearly the reason for the sheer number of children being housed in this facility, but it is barely mentioned, nor is that particular war really the focus or the point of the documentary; that is placed squarely on the children. The resilience of these kids is truly wondrous, ranging from younger children who maintain their childlike playful nature, even in these extreme circumstances, to slightly older (but still very much young) children who have clearly had to grow up faster than any child should. As a small look into this tiny-but-not-so-tiny, unexplored corner of the war, A House Made of Splinters was a very eye-opening experience. Score: 8/10 Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.).

-Rocky III (1982, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] This is my favorite Rocky of the classic run, bar none, hands down, no contest. It is easily the most fun, easily the most purely entertaining, and has what, to me, is easily the best fight of those first four films. Mr. T is brilliant as Clubber Lang, and Burgess Meredith and Carl Weathers continue to be scene-stealing masters as Mickey and Apollo Creed. I've read that many, many people (both fans and critics alike) think this is the most rewatchable film in the Rocky franchise and I could not agree more. It's still not just a blazing masterpiece or anything; it falls prey to trying to recapture those iconic moments of the first one just like Rocky II did, although to a lesser degree, and Paulie continues to be a giant bag of useless crap that adds nothing to this franchise whatsoever, Stallone even sees fit to add "racist" to Paulie's seemingly never-ending list of (excuse my language) dogshit qualities, for good measure. All of that aside, I had an absolute blast with Rocky III. It's so close to being an 8/10 it can almost taste it, but there are too many things still dragging it down to earn that extra point. Score: 7/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.

-Magic Mike's Last Dance (2023, dir. Steven Soderbergh) How do you strip the magic out of Magic Mike (puns absolutely intended)? You reduce the supporting cast that made the first two entries, especially the second one, so much fun to mere cameos, and then you take Channing Tatum's Mike Lane to London and place him in a position where he only gets to fully dance twice in the entire film. You also throw in a really contrived and unnecessary voiceover and make the big set piece at the film's end, which has been sold to us as something that's supposed to be truly spectacular, a pretty fun strip show, but not one that's any better than the stuff we got at the end of the previous film. I was also surprised by an uncharacteristically sub-par turn from Salma Hayek Pinault, who is normally a great actress. I'm not entirely sure if it was that her character was poorly written, or if her acting was really not good even for the material she was given, but it shocked me to see a veteran actress like Hayek Pinault give something far below her usual. All was not completely lost, though, as the choreography was great, as usual, and the film has still got a trace of the humor that made XXL so fun. I didn't have the worst time with Magic Mike's Last Dance, but I was disappointed. Soderbergh can do better, and I kind of hope this is, indeed, Magic Mike's last dance. Score: 5/10 Only in theaters.

-Rocky IV (1985, dir. Sylvester Stallone) [REWATCH] I'm sorry, I know Rocky fans the world over consider this one of the good ones, but it's bad. It's pretty bad. The runtime is extremely padded with completely unnecessary montages, a couple of which are just music videos for songs on the film's soundtrack. The fight at the end is not worthy of the really good setup that Ivan Drago gets in the film's first half; it's not a bad fight, per se, but the buildup was so big (like I said, there are so many training montages) for a fight that was largely no more intense than the fight from the original film. Not to mention Paulie's robot, which he manages to insert his sexism into (and the film plays it all for laughs), the fact that both Rocky and Adrian abandon their child ON CHRISTMAS to go fight the big-bad Russian man, leaving little Rocky Jr. in the care of the freaking robot! There's also the unavoidable subject of this being a cold-war propaganda film, which might be the most disappointing part of the whole thing. The franchise seems to be a complete bastardization of itself at this point in its lifespan, and it's getting the points I am giving it for Carl Weathers and the great setup of Drago as a menacing villain alone, even if the payoff for that setup was lackluster. I understand Stallone released a director's cut of the film a couple years ago that re-contextualizes a lot of the film into more of a character study befitting the tone of the first few entries. I'd be very interested to watch that and see if that's true. Score: 4/10 Currently streaming on Netflix.

-The Wicker Man (2006, dir. Neal LaBute) The classic. The infamous. The "not the bees!" one. This was the latest film my college friend group watched as a part of our "Nicolas Cage Fridays" movie night. It is everything that people have built it up to be, although maybe not quite as absolute trash as I've heard. It isn't good by any means, but Cage's acting outside of those few beautiful moments where we get full-Cage isn't really that bad. It's not great, but it's pretty standard stuff. It's an interesting enough story, but none of it ever really comes together in a way that isn't unintentionally hilarious. Also, this has no bearing on my score, but I was not aware that there are two different cuts of this film, a theatrical and an unrated. We watched the theatrical version, apparently, so imagine my surprise when the end of the film comes along and that truly iconic line and scene is just completely skipped over. I was livid. Thankfully, that appears to be the only big difference between the two versions, so it was nothing a quick YouTube pull-up couldn't fix. I had a fun time with The Wicker Man, but I attribute most of that to watching it in a group setting and not to the film itself. I really want to watch the original Christopher Lee film from 1973 that this is a remake of, because I hear that is much better. Score: 4/10 Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) and on DVD and Blu-ray through Warner Bros.

-Children of the Corn (2023, dir. Kurt Wimmer) An unfortunate fun fact about me is that I have, regrettably, seen all 10 (now 11) entries in this godforsaken franchise. It's one of the unfortunate side-effects of being dedicated to watching all Stephen King-related media. I'm not proud of it, but it is a sunk cost fallacy that I cannot separate myself from. That being said, in the realm of horrible Children of the Corn films (which is basically all of them), this one at least had a decent production value and acting that wasn't laughably atrocious. I think more than anything, this entry suffers the most from being just kind of uninteresting. It comes from the angle of showing just how the town became children-of-the-corn'd, which is interesting, in a way, but once the proverbial shit hits the fan it's just more of the same that we've already seen a handful of times (or, if you're a normal person, maybe only seen once). I think the thing that I hate the most is that I know that, inevitably, there will be another one, and I will go see it, because I've made this bed of corn husks for myself, so I might as well lie in it. Score: 3/10 Only in theaters.

I saw Return to Seoul this morning, but don't feel like I've formed my opinion enough to even give a mini-review yet. That will most likely be a full-length one that I will type up tomorrow. I'm also currently in the middle of Argentina, 1985, so look out for that on next week's wrap-up.

The near future in the Doctor Who universe sure gets dire doesn't it? Especially if Mad Jack / Roger ap Gwilliam is still part of history.

I thought I'd have a bit of fun listing things out, combining as many sources as possible. Turns out he fits in shockingly well with what we know. There's a lot missing here or cut out, and for obvious reasons it's very UK / Europe focused, but nonetheless:

2006-2021 (obviously the past now, but still noting for the resulting temporal and political butterfly effect) - In the original timeline, Harriet Jones remains Prime Minister for 3 consecutive terms, presumably 15 years assuming no snap election was called, referred to as a 'golden age' [World War Three]. The Tenth Doctor deliberately changes history to cause her deposal [The Christmas Invasion], leading to numerous disastrous terms in the meantime, including those of Harold Saxon [The Sound of Drums et al.], Brian Green (who tried to appease the 456) [Children of Earth], Boris Johnson (an auton host of the Nestene Consciousness) [Rose (novelisation)], and Jo Patterson (responsible for deploying cloned Dalek defence drones in the UK's streets) [Revolution of the Daleks].

2010s-2030s - The European Union gradually integrates further, eventually becoming the European Zone / Eurozone, a global superpower which competes with the USA through the 21st century. The UK eventually forms part of the bloc [Trading Futures].

It's likely that Harriet Jones's deposal led to this and related events being delayed or erased, with Brexit (driven by, among others, one of Jones's successors in the new timeline) reducing european unity. Most notably, Ramón Salamander's rise to power occurs now not in the 2010s [The Enemy of the World], but in the 2030s [Doctor Who and the Enemy of the World]. There are other events that are seemingly delayed by ~20 years by changes to the timeline, including future events like the dictatorship of Mariah Learman [The Time of the Daleks, Trading Futures], and yet also possibly past events like the death of Queen Elizabeth II [Battlefield, The Longest Night et al.], which may suggest something else (eg. the Time War) may be responsible.

~2030 - During a time of rising global tensions [73 Yards], Ramón Salamander convinces a group of scientists in an underground shelter endurance experiment that nuclear war has broken out on the surface. They are convinced to generate artificial "natural" disasters to fight back against the enemy. Between this and ongoing climate change, several global food sources collapse as a result, including Canada and Ukraine's corn and flour production [The Enemy of the World].

2031 - Tensions culminate in the "Great Russian War". Despite posturing, not a single nuclear weapon is fired, at least by NATO [73 Yards]. This may be later considered World War III [Trading Futures].

~2032-2035 - Following the war, tensions rise again, now between the Eurozone and the USA [Trading Futures], possibly in reaction to actions (or lack thereof?) taken by NATO during the war [73 Yards]. Both send separate peacekeeping forces to conflict in North Africa. Meanwhile, Italy is engaged in civil war [Trading Futures].

Over the decade, Ramón Salamander rises in power in the World Zone Authority, using his patented "Sun Store" satellite technology to aid the growth of crops by controlling sunlight over agricultural regions. In the background, he murders and blackmails officials to place loyalists into powerful positions, with the goal of ruling over the World Zone Authority as a dictator. Salamander's treachery is later discovered and he disappears [The Enemy of the World].

2037 - 2042 - Several militia declare wars of Independence from the USA. Notably, Phoenix, Arizona is destroyed in a terrorist attack. While the country largely persists after the conflicts, some territories seem to successfully secede - with, for example, a Montana Republic seemingly being in existence in 2054 [Alien Bodies].

2038 - The World Zones Accord is signed. This is later considered to have reduced the United Nations to a 'joke' compared with the World Zone Authority [Alien Bodies]. Given the extensive power it gives to the WZA, this was likely originally part of Salamander's plan, but due to his disappearance he is not around to reap the rewards [The Enemy of the World].

2039 - A group of Mexican astronauts studying minerals on the Moon go missing [Kill the Moon].

~2030s - 2040s - The Earth begins to experience major climate change effects, including "appalling storm conditions" which harm agriculture [The Waters of Mars]. The ice caps melt and flood much of the Earth [K9] with nations like the Netherlands ending up entirely flooded [St Anthony's Fire]. Some regions experience corrosive acid rain [Cat's Cradle: War Head, Strange Loops]. One summer sees Britain experience a 22 week drought. At this time, the Eurozone closes its borders to millions of North African and Baltic Sea refugees [Hothouse]. This time period may be known as the "Oil Apocalypse" [The Waters of Mars].

With Earth's ecosystems collapsing [Davros], humanity begin to realise it's facing extinction [The Waters of Mars]. An artificial cooling agent is spread in the atmosphere to semi-successfully combat the effects, but leads to dramatic side-effects, including freezing some areas of the globe. This is known as the "Great Cataclysm" [K9].

2041 - A three-human team, including Adelaide Brooke, lands on Mars for the first time [The Waters of Mars]. However, with this accomplishment, and increasing turbulence on Earth, Humanity gradually loses interest in space exploration [Kill the Moon].

Before 2045 - Around this time, the UK falls into a dictatorship ruled by the "Director", head of a military council that has allegedly (secretly?) controlled the government since 2028 [Britain Protests]. It is possible that this Director was previously the "Minister of War" for previous governments [Before the Flood].

2045 - The World Zones Authority evolves into a World Government, with Nikita Bandranaik being elected President. The UK is not part of the organisation [This is 2065].

2046-2050s - The Director is overthrown [Down with the Director] and the rest of the government "collapses in shame" [73 Yards]. Some of the revolutionaries celebrate now being "masters of [their] own country" [Down with the Director]. Despite the hopes of the World Government for international integration, this nationalistic streak continues.

Roger ap Gwilliam is elected Prime Minister, with the far-right nationalistic Albion Party gaining a majority of 92 MPs [73 Yards]. While his government does take the step to officially join the World Government senate [Down with the Director], he seeks greater independence from other nations. One of his first actions is to expand the UK's nuclear arsenal, purchasing missiles from Pakistan and withdrawing from NATO. In his term, the world is brought to the brink of nuclear war [73 Yards], likely in the pre-2050s "Euro Wars" [The Time of the Daleks].

In this time, the "Department", a (private?) multinational security organisation is born, based primarily in the UK. They gain broad powers, which they use to control populations with propaganda and use of "CCPC"s: robotic law enforcement notorious for their surveillance and brutality. Despite its recent revolution, the country is rendered practically a police state [K9].

2049 - The Moon starts to dramatically gain mass, causing massive tides on the Earth, flooding entire cities. In a last ditch at survival, humanity plans to try and destroy the Moon using an array of nuclear bombs. Despite the people of Earth being offered the vote on what to do by turning off their lights, it appears the decision is made on a national level, with lights going off grid-by-grid. Nonetheless, the Moon is allowed to hatch, leaving behind a new less massive egg "moon" with minimal further destruction [Kill the Moon].

Humanity's interest in space exploration returns [Kill the Moon], starting a new space race. Among these projects, Australia begins constucting a space elevator, Spain a project called "SpaceLink", while Germany and Russia each begin a series of new Moon missions. The Philippines are rumoured to be planning their own landing on Mars [The Waters of Mars].

~2050 - The UK Government (ap Gwilliam's?) is couped once more, by General Mariah Learman. With the King's permission, elections are suspended for at least a couple years, with her ruling over a "benevolent dictatorship". She is later abducted and forcibly mutated by the Daleks [The Time of the Daleks]. Despite the previous description, her promotion of Shakespeare in schools is remembered as the only good thing about her rule [Trading Futures]. (Note: As mentioned prior, it's likely that Learman's rule may have been delayed as Salamander's was. This is suggested by the mention of her in Trading Futures, set seemingly ~2030s or earlier, despite The Time of the Daleks taking place around the 2050s.)

~2050s - The Gravitron is built on the new Moon. This is used to artificially control the tides and weather [The Moonbase]. It likely also is intended to study and monitor the new Moon for future changes [Kill the Moon].

2058 - 2059 - Bowie Base One is established: humanity's first colony on another planet and an international collaboration between the UK, USA, Russia, Germany, Turkey, South Korea, Lithuania, Australia, and Pakistan. One year later, it is mysteriously destroyed in a deliberately triggered nuclear explosion. In the original timeline, there were no survivors. However, after the interference of the Time Lord Victorious, the true story is eventually told on Earth. Regardless "a veil of darkness" sweeps over the planet over the next few years. [The Waters of Mars], as international tensions heat up once more... [Total Eclipse of the Heart].

2060s - The "Great War" breaks out on Earth, involving every country on Earth. This is likely World War IV. Details are vague, but it ultimately ends in a ceasefire, when it's realised the conflict is risking Earth's habitability [Total Eclipse of the Heart].

2024 Cheating scandal Team Penske hit with penalties over Push to Pass use; O’Ward declared St. Petersburg winner How Team Penske took push-to-pass beyond the limit

Penske Perfect and Details Matter are two phrases often used in conjunction with the Penske organization. And when they can be used to dunk on Ferrucci, all the better.

Josef is a perfectionist. This is a combo of his highly competitive nature - which has been said about him from a young age - and the Penske Perfect motto which he has taken to heart. He is highly critical of himself - getting very down on himself if he makes a mistake and taking the blame for things not wholly under his control. But he tried to maintain a genial if slightly arrogant image in public. He slips sometimes - there have been a few angry Twitter interactions that he later apologized for and on occasion after a race, his temper will get the better of him and he'll say things he probably shouldn't.

He can be goofy as hell as seen on Bus Bros. Scott McLaughlin has brought this out of him since becoming teammates. Josef has said that Scott makes him feel more comfortable being his real self.

I would be remiss if I did not point out Josef's thighs. He is a specimen in general but those thighs should get special attention.

Fanfic Lore

Frequently paired with teammate Scott McLaughlin. As of 2024 there has been a cooling of their friendship as Josef pulls back to focus on racing/the championship.

Historically paired with Conor Daly. They raced together in karts and lower-series cars.

in 2005 (2005 is the year Brian got out of prison) Brian Peck and Ron Melendez were filming a movie together called The Outlaw Trail. It came out in 2006. (https://www.deseret.com/2005/11/3/19920242/new-film-based-on-legend-of-butch-cassidy-and-stolen-gold/)

These two were also in Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995) together...

If you are unfamilar, Ron Melendez wrote this letter for Brian Peck's case

"grow and develop into what I saw as parental" (okay... fucked up)

I also hate how he ends this whole sentence with "Brian is a good man"

"I have seen his behavior and understood that there were problems" gee wizz i wonder what the problems could have been. Could it have been that a 41 year old man was preying upon this kid?

Also ron states in the letter that he "lived in Brian's house" in 2001-2002 so he's either as blind as a bat or he knew exactly what Brian was doing and turned a blind eye to it because he was his friend.

Brian was interviewed in 2003, Feb, 3 months before he was arrested... in the interview he talks about horror movie shit but this line sticks out because he's very likely talking about Drake here.

Letting out a soft sigh, you hopped into your car, starting it up. It was late at night, and you came back after finishing your class to find that you had no food left in your dorm. It was way past dining hall hours, so you had no other choice but to drive to a fast food restaurant.

It’s your sophomore year of college, and you’re enjoying it. You love your school. It’s Ivy League and has a great education, and the people you’ve met so far are amazing.

You’re studying medicine, to become a doctor for children. So you could help the world become a better place. You loved what you were learning, even if the load could be a bit heavy at times, you enjoyed yourself.

Everything was working out for you, and you were happy..but sometimes, there was a small nagging feeling, that you only felt late at night, when you let the bad thoughts take over.

You felt empty. Like there was a hole in your heart. Sure, you had dated a few times, but the relationship would only last so long.

On late nights like this, you missed Frank. You would always find yourself wondering how he was doing, if he was okay, if he was making the right choices, if he was better…constantly worrying about him.

You hadn’t even realized you were crying, until you felt a sob get stuck in your throat. Pulling up to a stop light, you wiped away your tears, fiddling with the locket.

But no matter how hard you tried, the tears kept coming, as you thought back on all the memories you and he shared. All the things you did for each other..all the things you missed.

You’ve never loved anyone the way you loved him, and you haven’t loved anyone since.

“Shit.” You mumbled, realized that you were so lost in thought that you had turned onto the wrong road. One that was unmarked, and near the woods.

You knew the way back, but you had to admit, it was kind of creepy out here. When there were no streetlights or markings on the road, just darkness ahead of you.

You turned on your headlights, and switched on the radio, needing some noise to clear your head. As you flipped through the channels, something ran in front of you.

“Fuck!” You exclaimed, grabbing the steering wheel and turning hard, in order to not hit the buck. Your tires screeched, and you ended up swerving off the road, and into the woods.

It all happened so fast. The sound of the glass shattering as your car hit the tree, the airbags deploying and smacking you, and the sharp pain in your head and body.

The last thing you remembered was watching the fog roll in, before everything went black.

You awoke to a throbbing pain in your head, your eyes slowly fluttering open. You had no idea where you were, nor how you got there. In fact, you don’t even know who you are.

All you knew was that your head hurt a lot, and that you are now standing in some strange, wooded area. Getting to your feet, you did your best to wipe off the grime from your tank top and shorts.

You rubbed your temples, looking around the area, seeing no one in sight. Spotting a fire in the distance you decided to walk over to it.

When you got closer, you realized it was a barrel, with some burning corn inside it. Which you found quite strange.

You stared down at the fire, feeling no heat radiating from it, watching as it flicked around in the same, consistent pattern. Where are you? What is this place?

Suddenly, you heard shouting, and spotted a figure running towards you in the distance. You couldn’t hear what he was saying, nor understand what he was doing.

Following the man, a hatchet came flying right at you. You managed to react in time, stepping out of the way, so it grazed you slightly, slicing off a lock of hair.

Shocked, you stared at the axe that now was in the tree behind you. If you hadn’t moved, your head would’ve been split in two.

“We have to run.” The stranger said, grabbing you by the arm and dragging you with him. You heard some soft humming in the distance, and turned to look over your shoulder, before the man stopped you.

“Don’t look back. Keep looking forward and keep running.” He told you, continuing to run until the humming grew distant and quiet, until you could no longer hear it anymore.

He finally stopped, letting go of your arm, and leaning up against the tree, panting softly. Now that you stopped, you could get a good look at him.

Messy black hair, dark eyes, and other soft features. He winced slightly in pain, his hand on his side, where some blood was seeping through. You hadn’t even noticed he was hurt.

“Holy shit! Are you okay? Who are you? Where are we? What the hell is going on?” You questioned. He put a finger to his lips, indicating for you to quiet down.

“There’s not enough time to explain. Just listen to me so we can get out of here.” His voice was calm, despite the pain he was experiencing. How the hell could he be calm when you both were just attacked?

Pulling some bandages from his coat pocket, he handed it to you. “Now, I’m going to need you to wrap these around me, okay?”

“O-okay.” You nodded, and as you unraveled the bandages, he pulled his jacket up and bit on his scarf to keep quiet.

With shaky hands, you wrapped the bandages around the gash on his side. Strangely, you find comfort in how calm he was. It makes you feel like everything is going to be okay.

You’re sure you will be, if this guy is so calm about whatever’s happening right now, then you have to be okay. This is probably some big misunderstanding, and someone will come help you. Someone will come save you, and you’ll remember who you are and how you got here.

A Day in the Life of... A Young 17th Century Prince, Through His Own Eyes

I've stumbled across a very interesting old article in Dutch which quotes from a handwritten document by William of Orange from a time long before he became King of England:

Mémoire et quoy je pourray à employer les heures du jour.

Le jour de Dimanche est destiné par le service de Dieu après que les deux presches seront achevé le reste du jour je poura employer celon le temps à joué ou faire des visites ou promenades.

Lundi. Ce lever à 6 heures jusqu'es à 7 prie Dieu et sa bible, depuis 7 jusques à 8 au fortifications, puis une demieure pour desjeuner apres 2 pour les estudes puis tour des armes et danscher jusques à leure du diné. Deux heures l'aprediné pour les estudes et le reste jusques au souper pour autre exercisse ou schoses ou promenade.

Les autres jours Conforme au lundi ormi le mardi, jeudi et sammedi qu' aulieude tirer des armes et dancer j'iray au conseil.

Lesapres souper je peus aller chezlarayne les quatres autres demeurer aupres de Mama oujouer avec masseur ou au billiard dans ma schambre.

Translation: Memorandum and what I could [do] to make use of the hours of the day.

The day of Sunday is destined for the service of God and after the two sermons have concluded I can use according to the weather to play or make visits or take walks.

Monday. Rise at 6 o’clock and until 7 pray to God and his Bible, from 7 to 8 to the fortifications, then a half-hour for breakfasting, afterwards two [hours] for [my] studies, then being trained at arms and dancing [lessons] until dinnertime. Two hours in the afternoon for studies and the rest until supper for other exercises or stuff or promenading.

The other days conform to Monday, except that on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday instead of shooting and dancing, I go to the council.

After supper I can go to the queen [Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia, his great-aunt], the four others [i.e. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday] I stay with Mama or play with my sister or at billiard in my bedroom.

The publication does not give a date (if the original, which apparently was held in an archive in Dessau, Germany pre-WWII and since seems to have been lost is/was dated at all), but the mention of "Mama", Mary Henrietta Stuart, also known by her English title of Princess Royal who died in 1660, indicates that William was not yet 10 years old when he wrote this little essay on his day-to-day-life.

While the perspective of a young prince can hardly give us any information on the experiences of (Dutch) children at that point in time in general, it is fascinating to catch a glimpse of one so young, and so aware of his unique position.

His French contains some adventurous orthography indicating that the young prince wrote as the words sounded to his ear, leading to him frequently stringing several words together as one or adding letter combinations (e.g. the "sch" in "danscher" [danser] or "schambre" [chambre]) that hint at a distinctly Dutch accent in his pronunciation. Some of these features (particularly the "sch") can still be found in documents written in his hand later in life.

His vague mention of sometimes just doing "stuff" in the afternoon reflect the young age of the writer; in a day so closely supervised and planned out, little room was alotted to playtime for the future head of state.

Most poignantly however is the at the first glance unassuming mention of "masseure" [ma sœur, my sister], whose identity in the absence of any biological siblings (his father died a week before he was born) can only be guessed at but bespeaks the relative social isolation William grew up in, as he clearly wished not only for a playfellow of a like age, but someone to connect to, and share his experiences.

The most likely candidate is the young Elisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz, known as Liselotte or Lisette to her family, who, together with her aunt Sophie von Hannover visited her grandmother, the ex-Queen of Bohemia, in The Hague and was one of the few friends William made (was allowed to make) during his childhood. Even when marriage politics of later years separated them forever, letters reveal that they kept a fond memory of their childhood days together even as adults.

In any case, this litte essay, a staple of primary school exercises until this very day, provides an intriguing glimpse in the life of a child who lived 350 years ago, and throws a more humanising light on a king often characterised merely by his adult exploits.
