I posted a colour pic of my favourite Sydney lane last week and referred to it’s dank Victorian squalor.

Apart from being a great album title, some asked what the shot would look like in monochrome.

So here is Chippendale’s Sutherland Lane in B&W.

Wallcovering applied square by square and lacquered conveys the effect of leather-covered walls in the downstairs living room. Chippendale mirrors and rare Chippendale chests flank the custom-made mantel, which is decorated with a Chippendale chinoiserie clock, Colonial ivory orbs, and eighteenth-century ivory carved-and-turned candlesticks.

Sydney’s Chippendale is one of the old inner city suburbs with lots of lanes and night soil alleys.

I got a little lost amongst the agricultural names of streets and lanes early this morning and didn’t check where I was when I took this shot. So I’ll say this is lost in the urban forest of Chippo.
