I met Christian Marquand on the snowy peaks of Megève where my family and the Villiers went to rent a chalet every year and invited me because I was an excellent skier. I even had a bronze chamois (it’s a competition). I met Christian on the slopes and I fell in love. They took me back to Paris and I was going to see Christian. And my family put this condition: "If you want to see each other, you have to get married." This is bourgeois bullsh*t. “I don’t want people to say that my daughter is the mistress of a friend of Vadim’s gang, it’s better to be his wife than his mistress, so my daughter, get married.” I think we all regretted it, but I got married at 17 and a half.

I was delighted. I started a new life, they called me madam. I was very happy and Christian knew lots of people. Astruc lived with us, Paul Gegauff the screenwriter for Godard, a very good screenwriter. He had a group of extremely nice friends and Brando. We were going to live with Brando for six months. Life with Christian was lively and full of friends. We lived at Brando's house. It was great, we rode motorcycles together. At the time, he was filming a great film with Jane Fonda. He had me try out as an Indian, as a squaw, because he wanted to make a film with me as an Indian. He didn't take me on, but these tests remained in the drawers of a production house. But my agent at the time called me one day and said: “Come to America for a western where you will play an Indian girl”. With Delon and Dean Martin, under the name of Tina Marquand, I made “Texas across the River”, a comedy western.

Is Goodbye to Language the autumnal masterwork of a genius filmmaker? Or is it just an exercise in playing with old techniques -- montage, jump cuts, oblique and fragmented narrative -- in a new (at least to Godard) medium -- 3D? Not having seen the film in 3D, I'm not perhaps fully qualified to comment, but I have to say that it didn't open any new insights for me into the potential of film or the Godard oeuvre as a whole. That in the film Godard makes the wanderings of a dog more coherent and interesting than the conflicts of his human characters is telling: He is obviously more emotionally invested in the dog, played by his own pet, Roxy Miéville, than in the people, whose story can only be pieced together from the fragments of what they do and say to each other. Language, as the title suggests, is subordinate to direct sensation, in which the dog has an advantage over the incessantly chattering and analyzing humans. Godard suggests this through a barrage of quotations from philosophers and novelists, which keep tantalizing us away from simply absorbing the images that he also floods the film with -- the cinematographer, responsible for many of the novel 3D effects, is Fabrice Aragno. Even without 3D, Goodbye to Language is often quite beautiful, with its saturated colors, but I'm not convinced that it adds up to anything revelatory.

1) We heard you say once, that the most important men of this century are Freud, Einstein, Lenin and Breton. Could you tell us a bit more about why?

All four have pointed towards and illuminated our path through life, they have enriched our understanding of ourselves, opened up a marvellous and poetic world, a new understanding of the universe, or, in a revolutionary sense, have led us towards a different kind of society that may be less unjust than our own.

2) How present is Spain in your ideological and cultural make-up?

As the earth that feeds and makes a tree grow. Although, culturally speaking, I owe a lot to France, because of my surrealist experience.

3) Eroticism and Catholicism are frequently joined in your films. What relationship do you see between two elements so apparently opposed?

Eroticism without Catholicism is only half the eroticism, because it lacks the sense of sin. I think it was Saint Thomas who said that, even for married couples in the Christian church, copulation was a venial sin.

4) Are you satisfied with Belle de jour? What made you choose Kessel’s novel?

What interested me in the novel was the conflict between the conscience of the heroine and her masochistic compulsions. I am never satisfied with my films.

5) And Simon of the Desert? We saw the film in Venice and liked it a lot. What have you done with the film. Do you intend to complete it?

I wanted to make it into a ten-reel film, but as my producer had already taken it to Venice, I abandoned that idea. Like other films I’ve made for Alatriste, the general public will get to see Simon of the Desert in ten or twelve years’ time.

6) What do you think of the ‘new waves’ in cinema today? Do they seem so ‘new’ to you?

Except for Godard, I don’t see anything new in the new waves. To my mind, the most human, the most vigorous new wave is happening in Brazil.

7) Have you seen The War is Over? What do you think of the film?

I haven’t seen the film. I will one day. I rarely go to the cinema.
