The Remembrance of Earth's Past - Cixin Liu
April 14, 2025
Full cloth case binding with design in heat transfer vinyl.
These books consumed me for the two weeks I spent working on them. Every day I would get home from work and open photoshop to work on the cover designs for hours each day. Once I had a strong vision in mind of the color scheme and concentric circles motif, I couldn't stop. The front and back covers of each book depict some of the most iconic moments and imagery from the series, but in an abstract enough way to not act as spoilers (I hope). The quotes on the back were chosen to best represent the themes of each book. I'm particularly proud of the pyramid on the spines.
Materials: covers - 2 mm grey board spine stiffener - paperboard covering material - linen bookcloth in black, white, and red vinyl - siser easyweed vinyl in black, white, and red
endpapers - marbled jute fiber paper endbands - linen bookcloth rolled over twine bookmarks - 1/4" satin ribbon edge painting - black, white, and red acryllic paint
Cover Design: Designed in Photopea. English font is Poppins Extrabold, Chinese font is Droid Sans. My original sketch:

possibly an unpopular opinion: i'm a huge fan of the books but i don't mind the westernization of the netflix adaptation of "3 body problem". the chinese already created their adaptation and the netflix one is probably more accessible to the wider audience. ye wenjie's backstory is almost exactly the same as in the book, the cultural revolution still has a huge impact on the story and THAT'S what's the most important. and if you don't find the characters super deep and interesting - that's kinda book-accurate...

I have a love/hate relationship with the 3 Body Problem book trilogy.
One the one hand: Big ideas, amazing, mindblowing concepts and existensial dread.
On the other hand: Poor characterization, weak plot and dear god in heaven, that detour into one character's "perfect girlfriend" fantasy was dire.

i get that 3 body problem is pretty fuckin' bleak (novels and netflix series alike) and there are all these different factions of humanity based on how they want to solve the problem of an alien race travelling 400+ years in space to exterminate us all but. my dude. my pal. my sibling in christ. where. are the monsterfuckers?

there's a show or something for this book coming out soon? anyway, this cover goes hard and the story goes harder. it's art for the STEM crowd, the gamers, the history buffs, and the speculative mystery enjoyers

I’m at the part of the dark forest where luo ji wakes up in the future and i can’t help but think about the clothing. the clothing that flashes moving images. moving images that mimics people’s thoughts or emotions. in the first book, i couldn’t get over what everyone’s predictions that the coming ages of humanity under threat of invasion will be hardened and impoverished and how it mirrors the princeps’ declaration that pretty things like culture was not suited for a civilization under threat. just… the little ways humanity is becoming trisolaran, a little less like humanity when we first meet humans in the first book.

A LONG RANT .. I seriously need to get this off my chest!!!
I've been two hundred pages in The Dark Forest for about three months now and GOD I'm struggling 😭 Why is it so hastily and poorly written? Why are the characters so shallow? I enjoyed the first book so much (even though sophons were a stretch) and the whole gaming..and the politics..like wtf happened?? How did it become so bad 😭 it's like someone totally disconnected with reality and with no understanding of how people behave wrote this book. I went in expecting even better execution than the Three Body Problem and found a mediocre, stereotypical piece of media instead. Are you trying to tell me that two hundred years later, we are STILL struggling with sexism??
And what's up with Luo's imaginary girlfriend?? 😭😭😭 That's the cringiest shit I've ever read in my whole life! Why TF are ALL women childish, SOFT, innocent and like completely detached from their surroundings ??? Even Da Shi could not save this book, his personality has also changed! When did the writer go from writing Ye Wenjie, an admirably complex character to these one-dimensional crybabies. The characters in this book become really dumb and really smart as befits the plot, THEY are not driving the plot...the plot and pre-determined ending is driving THEM, which is like such lazy writing.. I'm honestly so disappointed. I need some good sf books to clear my mind of this bullshit 💀
