Sheyenne Crawford is the second child born to Dr. Jeffery Crawford and his wife, Dr. Shantania Crawford. The daughter of a plastic surgeon and a trauma surgeon (respectively), Shyenne was born into the wealthy elite and never wanted for anything. She and her older brother attended only the best schools and traveled all over with their parents. While it was assumed Shyenne would take an interest in medical science as her brother had, she actually veered more towards the arts. She was a theater kid, played the cello in her school orchestra, and helped organize art shows for student fundraisers. A few months after she graduated from high school, Shyenne was approached by a modeling agent. While her parents fostered her creativity, it was made clear that she'd still have to attend college and odtain a degree in something.

Shyenne decided to go for a business degree while pursuing a modeling career. While she loved modeling, she was never a fan of the beauty standards and horrible working conditions that came with it. She wanted to open her own agency, one which allowed people of all sizes and backgrounds to pursue their dreams.

At the age of twenty-four, Shyenne would go on to open the Crawford agency for modeling with financial help from her parents. Though the agency took a few months to get off the ground, it would begin to rapidly gain popularity and soon become one of the most profitable agencies in the country.

⚜ — hey, is that Jake Gyllenhaal? oh no, that’s just NICOLAS ROSSIGNOL, the thirty-eight year old cis male who is a neurosurgeon, and live up in Manhattan. i’ve heard they are heterosexual, and decisive + scrupulous, but the bad tongues say he can be inscrutable + stubborn. they are known around New York as the Black Sheep, but only time will tell if that’s true.

The Rossignols [pronunciation] are extremely, obscenely rich, and have been for a very long time. Nicolas’ Swiss father Sébastien is the chairman and CEO of the family’s empire — one of the world’s largest privately held companies— and his American mother Claudia (née Pike) comes from old money (think the Vanderbilts or Rockefellers) as well.

His parents had a turbulent relationship, playing a happy couple when needed but openly contemptuous and unfaithful behind closed doors. Their children, meanwhile, didn’t see much of them. When Nic and his siblings weren’t off at boarding school in Switzerland, they stayed in a separate wing of the family’s (many) residences.

Sébastien, in particular, saw his children only as pawns. From the beginning, they were simply informed of what their fates as the scions of the Rossignol dynasty would be and expected to comply. Claudia (the ne plus ultra of socialtes), though less outwardly less unkind, was hardly better.  Among his siblings, Nic was always the black sheep, the favorite of neither his father nor his mother, the forgotten middle child pushed aside in favor of the others.

Around the time he turned eighteen, Nic had an epiphany: he didn’t have to be part of any of it.He didn’t want to be shackled to the company in a job he didn’t really earn, spend the rest of his life competing with his siblings over who would succeed their father, or remain enmeshed in his family’s toxicity. So he walked away. 

Eventually deciding to go to medical school, he became interested in neurology and surgery during the rotations in his third and fourth year. Now, he’s a neurosurgeon at Weill Cornell. His work is immensely rewarding to him.

He’s a pretty quiet guy, seems sort of unassuming at first glance, and while he’s friendly, also not the easiest person to get to know.

Underneath it all, he has a steel backbone. He knows who he is and what’s important to him.

Nic’s relationship with his family is close to nonexistent. There’s no animosity on his part, but he just doesn’t care to have a relationship with most of them. He’s married now, with three children, and wants his kids to have a very different upbringing than he did.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, Maxine Elise Vanderbilt, loving daughter and friend, passed at the age of 18. Max was born on January 1, 2001 in New York, NY to Cornelius and Claudine (Rockefeller) Vanderbilt. She would have graduated from Kingswood Boarding School and received her Associates Degree this May/June. She would have attended Yale University this fall, studying pre-law for the graduating class of 2021. Max had a passion for helping the community, always wanting to help those in need. She held a variety of leadership positions from student body president to head of the Elizabeth House.  She was also an avid athlete, competing as a cheerleader, fencer, and equestrian. In her spare time she could have also been found welcoming new students, participating in Model UN, competing for the debate team, and tutoring a wide array of students. Across campus she was known for being amiable, pristine, and down to earth. Max was preceded in death by her father, Cornelius, and her mother, Claudia. She is survived by her niece, Elodie, and her grandparents. A funeral service will be held on April 7th, 2019 at the St. Mary's Cathedral on Main Street at 1 o’clock p.m.

Circular City Week: “FLOW” ↬ 4-10 March 2019

In celebration of the landmark first staging of a vital economic forum, Circular City Week New York × The Vanderbilt Republic are pleased to unveil an immersive installation experience centered on the theme of FLOW. Circular economy is a global paradigm shift with the potential to transform industry and redesign urban living. The transformative potential of circularity is not specific to a single sector but can be linked to everything from digitization and the sharing economy, to the food industry and the built environment. Circular City Week (“CCW”) wants to give everyone a platform for knowledge and resource sharing, no matter whether you approach circularity from a design perspective, an environmental awareness standpoint, as a means to rethinking consumerism, or as an opportunity to generate new value and revenue. The aim of the week is to inspire industry professionals across sectors, showcase international pioneers and engage students to be the future of circularity. Different schools of thought arrive there by different means, but all agree with the core principle descibed by Janine Benyus’ Biomimicry philosophy — the idea is that a sustainable world already exists. new year, same gossip girl.

that’s right, upper east siders, i was at the party and i saw it all. there were a lot of kisses this new year’s eve, so i won’t tell all, but there’s certainly enough gossip to warrant this blast. 

as expected, caspian and little g reunited with a kiss as the bells tolled midnight, but does she know that he was seen sneaking off with cynthia earlier? there’s nothing more fun than a woman scorned. and yet again, caspian sneaks off with hannah doing who knows what – we thought it would be flighty georgie using caspian, but maybe it’s the other way around.

speaking of hannah, she arrived with her boyfriend, sebastian valmont, before engaging in a heated conversation with nikolai. after that, she spent the evening downing pills and potions until she looked after her brother, jaime, after nikolai knocked him in the face – twice. i love a good fight, but this one looked a little unprovoked. we wonder whether it was his encounter with hannah or his heated conversation in the hallway with genevieve van buren that set him off. either way, jaime madison didn’t stand a chance, especially after a mood-killing argument with margot vanderbilt in the middle of the dance floor. didn’t seem to bother margot though – she was spotted leaving the dance with ex-boyfriend federico greco. wonder what camilla newhouse thinks of her fiance spending the remainder of the evening with another woman.

guess margot wasn’t too annoyed by rick bordeaux’s kiss with ex-girlfriend claudia windsor at midnight either – she was too busy locking lips with the enemy – sloane taylor.

but fede’s night was anything but smooth sailing after a mysterious encounter with kenny durand sent him packing to the emergency room with his finger snapped in two – they’ve never gotten along, but i wonder what inspired this particular outburst. however, it seems kenny got his happy ending after a new year’s kiss with pip renetti sent them exiting the ballroom rather quickly. oh, if walls could talk – or take photographs. i’d love to see a snap of natalie tate’s face.

i heard dakota worthington got their midnight kiss too, with none other than marley redd. didn’t marley’s twin, emery, used to date theodore? i guess affection for the redds runs in the family. theo himself was seen spotted off before midnight with maybe-boyfriend collin clarke.

our final surprise kiss of the evening was giulia greco, who kissed future queen catriona grimaldi. i wonder if any photos of this will make their way back to the royal court.

Well over a century after the fabric was patented by tailor Jacob Davis and wholesaler Levi Strauss, blue denim remains a mainstay of wardrobes the world over.

The word “jean” emerged in the 1800s, and referred to a twill cotton cloth used for trousers, but the textile soon became conflated with the garment it was most commonly used for. Blue jeans, now called “denim”, were originally made from this fabric and manufactured in the French town of Nîmes (bleu de Nîmes). There is still debate over whether the word “denim” is an anglicised version of the French textile, or the French name was given to an already existing English product to give it prestige. By the 20th century, “jean” was the term for a wide range of cotton or denim informal trousers.

Classic jeans as we’ve come to know them – made from indigo-dyed denim with pockets and sturdy riveting suitable for workwear – were patented in 1873 by Jacob Davis, a tailor, and Levi Strauss, the owner of a wholesale fabric house in San Francisco. The copper rivets used to reinforce the pockets were appreciated by miners and other labourers, who complained about frequent pocket rips. Strauss and Davis initially made jeans in two types of fabric, brown duck and blue denim, but the creation of the denim 501 style in 1890 helped the latter fabric take off. Over the course of the decade, design improvements were made: Strauss added a double arch of orange stitching for further reinforcement and to identify them as Levi’s; belt loops appeared in 1922; zippers replaced the button fly on some styles in 1954. But when Strauss and Davis’s patent ended in 1890, other manufacturers were free to reproduce the style. OshKosh B’Gosh entered the market in 1895, Blue Bell (later Wrangler) in 1904 and Lee Mercantile in 1911. During the First World War, Lee Union-Alls jeans were standard issue for all war workers.

Hollywood helped romanticise the blue jean in the '20s and '30s by putting the trousers on handsome cowboy types played by the likes of John Wayne and Gary Cooper. This glamorous new image spoke to consumers who sought casual leisurewear to wear at the weekends and on holidays. Publicity photos of actresses like Ginger Rogers and Carole Lombard wearing jeans helped convince women that the style was for them, too. And in the '30s, Vogue gave its seal of approval, calling jeans “Western chic”. In 1942, the American designer Claire McCardell sold more than 75,000 of her denim “Popover” wrap dresses.

Yet it wasn’t until the '50s that jeans came to be associated with rebellious, anti-establishment youth. Marlon Brando and James Dean popularised the image of the denim-clad teen idol with huge sex appeal; rock and roll stars helped cement the style as cool; hippies and anti-war protestors wore jeans in the '60s and early '70s as a way to show support for the working class; while feminists and women’s lib organisers chose blue jeans as a way to demonstrate gender equity. By the '60s, jeans had come to symbolise the counterculture. Some high schools went so far as to ban them, which only served to further enhance their status

By the late '70s and early '80s high fashion began to take an interest too. Fiorucci’s Buffalo 70 jeans were skin-tight, dark, expensive and hard to purchase – in other words, the exact opposite of the faded bell-bottoms preferred by the younger crowd. They became a hit among the Studio 54 jet set. In 1976, Calvin Klein showed blue jeans on the runway — the first designer to do so. Gloria Vanderbilt introduced her hit jeans in 1979. A commercial success, these designer jeans were marketed with a racier image in mind. In the'80s, Brooke Shields’s provocative Calvin Klein campaign and Claudia Schiffer’s sultry ads for Guess helped give the blue jean a new kind of seductive potential. By the '90s, fashion houses such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior had also entered the jean market.

Over the decades, the types and styles of jeans became stratified among groups and subgroups: hip-hop styles of the early '90s were characterised by oversized, low-slung baggy jeans; intellectuals and hipsters turned to dark denim as a way to get back to the style’s roots; pop stars favoured Diesel’s sandblasted and whiskered styles; aficionados paid high prices for vintage Levi’s and hand-dyed Japanese indigo. Today, almost all luxury labels and high-fashion designers have sent jeans down the runway; and they’re available at both ends of the price spectrum, in a multitude of styles: wide, skinny, high-waisted, low, light, dark or coloured. “I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans,” Yves Saint Laurent told New York Magazinein November 1983. “They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity — all that I hope for in my clothes.”

We rode our bikes only 38 miles in the afternoon from Poughkeepsie to Brewster NY.

The trail was in top shape, sometimes brand new and the weather as always was perfect.

We stayed at the only motel in town which was not so bad. But for the first time we had to send an SOS to Claudia for support as the GPS was not working and we could not reach the our lodging. We stopped at a Pizza place until Claudia rescued us.

Brewster has nothing to offer except for “Las Mañanitas,” one of the best restaurants you can find in the middle of nowhere (or anywhere else for that matter. ) We walked there from the motel expecting nothing special and were surprised to see about 300 cars in a large parking lot. There were like 20 people waiting to be seated, and we had no reservations so Hernan applied his charm and talked to the hostess to help us out. OMG! did she ever! We ended up seating in the best place in the restaurant, a terrace where they had never placed tables before. In addition we were served by the owner and her son in a restaurant that had over 500 people eating there at the time. We felt like the Vanderbilts; they treated us like royalty. The food was great, the view spectacular, and the service superb.

Another great day to remember.
