The Colleen Bawn

She had been murdered at the request of her recently eloped husband, John Scanlon. Ellen Scanlon (née Hanley) was born to a Limerick farming family in 1803. Not by her name
Is the poor girl known,
But as The Colleen Pure,
Or, in Gaelic, "Bawn."
She was Ellie Hanley,
And that's forgot,
But the Colleen's story
In West Clare is not.
Barely sixteen, she
Went off with John Scanlon —
He said the right things;
They sailed on The Shannon.
She was beautiful, but
Without a penny —
He couldn't have taken her
Home to his family.
On the Shannon, they
Cruised up and down
Until one day she vanished,
The Colleen Bawn.
Then days of search
Until a slice
Of white chemise
Floated by a knife.
And finally The River
Served up its own:
The murdered body
Of The Colleen Bawn.
Now tourists come
To view her tombstone
And singers sing
Of The Colleen Bawn.
"He gave her a rose,"
Begins the rhyme,
And the song goes on
"Cause he took her time."
The talk of the county, Estha Weiner

“Ok ok, I feel you today / But know that those feelings are fading away” go the cutting lyrics in Bokito’s new single. ‘Okok’ hones in on the uglier part of human relations: their severance, with a fierce musicality that makes for one of the year’s most poignant and cathartic indie singles.
Opening with a palpitating kick drum beat and bright chiming guitars, the melancholia of frontman Moses’ stacked vocals evokes bittersweet wordless partings, and he goes the full range throughout the middle eight, which culminates in an exhilarating falsetto display. Ben Jackson’s immersive production floats the intricate busyness of the instrumental atop a soundscape of swirling ambience to make for a record that sounds restless and assured. It’s business as usual from a group reinvigorating the indie genre one release at a time.
Bokito’s music beckons us into impulsive and unfettered behaviour, both through recordings and in the flesh at their remarkable live shows. It’s a tight and uproarious blend of indie, rock and pop that reels listeners in with hooks so infectious we’d need to be quarantined in a cell made of penicillin to get them out of our system. Enigmatic frontman Moses is a creature of instinct, radiating soulful, primordial energy that baits listeners into following him into the uninhibited.
Tumblr media
His scorching vocal range leaves aural burns reverberating in your ears as they direct your fingers to the reload button. Guitars and keys merge kaleidoscopically, giving Bokito the range to go from hook-led numbers like ‘Love Gotten’ to the shimmering pop of ‘Freckle Leather’ via the grooves of ‘Colleen Bawn’. Drawing inspiration from diverse artists like J Dilla, Jeff Buckley, Fela Kuti, Justin Timberlake and Queens of the Stone Age, the group’s high-octane songwriting always stays deftly and dynamically under their control. Paired with Moses’ honest introspective lyrics, the five-piece channel a wide spectrum of emotions to leave plenty more for listeners to discover at each play; of which there will be many.

Foxglove
FOXGLOVE: Name three facts about your family?I have a few strange facts lmao 1. There’s like an Irish myth, that people with my surname disguise themselves as seals, it dates back to this story about a man who saw a seal turn into a woman and fell in love with her. 2. There’s a pretty famous play in Ireland that was written about a distant relative of mine (who was a murderer), it’s called the Colleen Bawn, it’s a really tragic tale. 3. My great grandfather was arrested for robbing a bank, he did so to give money to the IRA while they were trying to make Ireland independent from the UK. But he obviously failed lmao.

You Don’t Remember Too Good
It used to be “Where were you when JFK got shot?” and now it’s “Where were you on 9/11?”  But either way the answer is you probably remember it wrong.
Take a look at this guy, General Ivan N Walker, the 24th Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.  Here he is in 1896 remembering one of those odd coincidences people just love to go on about as if they have some kind of cosmic meaning.
Tumblr media
If you’re too millennial to read that old-timey typesetting, he basically relates how on the day of Abraham Lincoln’s nomination, he was in Chicago watching “Our American Cousin” with Laura Keene, the same play Lincoln watched the night he was assassinated!!!!
I don’t mean to disparage this fine soldier who served his country bravely and even helped execute a partially successful breakout from a notorious Confederate prison, but I am an asshole so I went ahead and did a quick fact check.  Lemme just drop this down here, from the Chicago Press and Tribune from May 18, 1860, the day in question:
Tumblr media
So apparently we have an old man making up shit, the way we old men are wont to do.
Not so fast, Usain Bolt.
Check out the Press and Tribune from the day before, May 17th:
Tumblr media
Holy shitballs it’s true! It’s all true!
Back it up, Linford Christie.
Near as I can figure, Laura Keene had just finished a six-week run of Colleen Bawn in New York that ended on May 12th.  Seems a bit of a stretch that she hopped in a train and made it to Chicago in time for what looks to be a one off performance.  And it doesn’t say anything about Laura Keene being in the cast.  She was one of the most famous actresses in the country; her name would have been in the bill.
And this is from the night before Lincoln’s nomination, so there’s no way it could have been announced to the crowd.  This being Chicago and Illinois being, uh, “the land of Lincoln,” I can easily see his face being projected by limelight onto the curtain just to get the crowd cheering, but that’s all that happened.
So to sum up, a nice old man took some things that were true and turned them into a story that wasn’t true and a reporter for the New York Times didn’t bother to do any fact-checking and a mean old man 120 years later decided to shit all over a dead guy.
Welcome to the blog, folks!

The Colleen’s Bawn: Single Projection [Film Loop]
vimeo
password: movingimage
A film by Katie Carson.
Voiceover: Abie Dickey Bass Player: Alan Shields
The Colleen’s Bawn, [from the Irish – bábhún - meaning “cattle-stronghold” or defensive wall surrounding a farmland protecting the family, cattle and property from attack] is a multi-disciplinary video projection about the controversial dichotomy: The State versus the Individual. It deals specifically with the lack of women’s reproductive rights in Northern Ireland. The viewer’s reality of time is manipulated through the moving image medium creating a complex temporal zone between past and present. A meditative quality is created through the camera gliding in and out of different frames. Visual and textual manifestations raise ethical issues Northern and Southern Irish women face. Painting and drawing elements are presented as expressive animations which include sombre imagery. Presented in the stark landscape of Ulster, spanning the North/ South border, with an abandoned farmhouse, the audience is suddenly exposed to a room – a clinical stark exhibition space. A narrator shares a woman’s musings on evolution and reproductive rights accompanied by an experimental soundtrack.
Media Used: Canon 5D, Ronin Gimbal DJI, 35mm, Stop-Motion Animation, Super 8
