RIP to the OG
Alas! Broadway star and legend Chita Rivera has died aged 91.
My cat is named for her, and it's a funny story I feel I should share. See, in 2007 or so, Dude was working for the local alt-newsweekly (remember those?) and during the time he was there, Chita Rivera was scheduled to come to Buffalo for a show. The theatre editor was so excited about this that he insisted on having a 52-week countdown on the theatre page, which annoyed the graphic design department enormously because that page otherwise had a static header.
But it became a running joke. "ONLY FORTY-NINE WEEKS UNTIL CHITA RIVERA!"
The theatre editor was so excited he commissioned a mural of her to be painted on his dining room wall.
I'm not sure how this came about, but somehow she was offered and accepted an invitation to come to his house to dine on the night she was in town. I cannot imagine painting someone on my dining room wall and then inviting her over, but I also have never been the theatre editor in an alt-newsweekly; there are many things I have not experienced in life.
In the midst of this, that's when Dude and I got our kitten. It was like-- of course we had to name her Chita. So we did. But not just Chita. She's Chita Rivera, which confuses the vet enormously, because neither of us have the last name Rivera. "She's not related to us," Dude explained patiently to the vet receptionist, who did not find this enlightening.
Anyway-- she was apparently a wonderful guest to dinner, the show she came to do was delightful, it all went swimmingly. She apparently was not at all disconcerted by the mural of herself, which I suppose if I were a legend I might also not find that disconcerting.
And while she was there, she told them her margarita recipe. I have made this recipe on several occasions and please serve it over a lot of ice because it will kill you otherwise. It is refreshing and actually really delightful to drink. It does not taste as strong as it is. It is incredibly strong.
Lo: The Chita Margarita, in memory of the realest of them all.
Take 1 can of limeade concentrate and empty it into a pitcher. Refill the empty can with tequila, and add that to the pitcher. Now refill the empty can with cheap beer-- Corona will do, something pale-- and add that to the pitcher.
Voila! No, this cannot be scaled down. Please serve it over ice.
Rest in peace, legend!

Welcome to Bixby's Lounge
The Case of the Greater Gatsby is coming in just a few days — a 1940s film noir radio play parody coming to you from Shipwrecked Comedy, as a sequel to their short film The Case of the Gilded Lily. I came up with a few special cocktails for us to drink while enjoying the show, and figured some of you might like to drink along! See below the fold for mocktail versions and syrup recipes.
Fig Wineshine 1 oz brandy 1 oz. fig simple syrup Seltzer Squeeze of lemon
Add brandy and syrup to a highball or rocks glass with ice. Top with soda, add lemon, and stir. Serve with cookies.
Shirley Themple 1 oz. gin 3/4 oz. grenadine (see recipe below) Seltzer Wedge of lime
Put gin, two ice cubes, and lime wedge in a shaker and shake like you’re trying to get information out of it. Strain gin into a highball glass, add grenadine, and top with seltzer. Stir, then spend the rest of the evening attempting to smoke the spoon.
Ford Phillips 2 fingers of scotch
Pour scotch into a rocks glass. Serve with limited eye contact.
Mocktails Fig Temperanceshine 1 oz. fig simple syrup Ginger ale Squeeze of lemon Optional: Dash of orange bitters
The Original Shirley Temple 3/4 oz. grenadine Seltzer (Willie’s recipe) or ginger ale (original recipe) Optional: Squeeze of lime, maraschino cherry garnish
Note: If using ginger ale, I recommend going with a spicier variety to balance against the sweetness of the syrup (we used Fever Tree).
Did you know: Grenadine was originally made from pomegranate, hence the name! To taste a Shirley T(h)emple as Bixby would have made it, follow the recipe below to make your own.
Homemade Grenadine 1 cup pomegranate juice 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice Optional: Dash of orange blossom water
Combine juice and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat on medium high until bubbles form, but before it fully boils. Remove from heat and let cool. Add orange blossom water if using, then pour into a well-sealed glass container. Keeps in the fridge 1-2 months.
Fig Simple Syrup 9 oz. fig jam 1 cup water OR 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 2 cups chopped fresh figs or 1 cup dried figs
Heat water in a small saucepan on medium high until steaming. Add jam (or sugar) and whisk gently to mix. If using fresh or dried fruit, add now. When the mixture begins to boil, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until it reduces by between 1/4 and 1/2 (you can taste a spoonful to check — if it’s doesn’t seem flavorful enough, keep reducing). Remove from stove and allow to cool. If using dried fruit, allow it to steep for an hour. Strain to remove seeds and store in a well-sealed glass container. Keeps in the fridge 1-2 months.

IWTV Signature cocktails
We’ve got a home bar and enjoy developing new cocktails for our seasonal menus. Last winter's menu was based on internet sensation Jorts the Cat, for instance.
This weekend I hosted the first London meet-up for fans of the AMC Interview with the Vampire tv show so of course (of course!) we developed two signature cocktails in tribute for the event. Our fall menu is going to be Halloween-themed so we'll keep these in rotation for a while longer, too!
Un Petit Coup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one’s a nicely balanced sweet, sour, smoky, and slightly spicy alcoholic sipping drink, with the bonus of having a pool of chocolate sauce at the bottom of the glass!
7.5ml Jalapeño syrup* 15ml Mezcal 15ml Cherry Heering 10ml Lime juice (~1/2 lime) Chocolate sauce drizzle rim Shake with ice. Hawthorn strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce around the inside of the rim.
* To make the Jalepeño syrup: Combine 1 chopped jalapeño, 100g sugar, 100ml water in a saucepan. Boil. Turn off heat. Once cooled, strain into jar & refrigerate. Lasts a few weeks so long as your jar or bottle is perfectly clean.
Tears of a Clown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also wanted to offer our guests an equally fun non-alcoholic cocktail. My starting point for this one was that I wanted to hit as many tastes as possible - spicy, sour, sweet and bitter. I hate that so many non alcoholic cocktails are just sugar bombs, so I wanted something you could sip and savour. This is absolutely delicious, and well worth seeking out bottles of the Italian bitter soda Sanbitter online.
1 barspoon Siracha 75ml Cranberry juice drink 100ml Sanbitter Pomegranate seeds Build in a rocks glass. Stir siracha & cranberry together in glass to combine. Add ice. Top with Sanbitter & stir. Top with pomegranate seeds.
Please share if you'd drink these vampire cocktails! I saw that AMC had some really basic bitch Pom-sponsored mocktails at the SDCC activation, but frankly, ours are way, way better!
Feel free to ask me any questions about these and let me know what you think if you make them yourself!

Tequila Sunset
-Recipe:
(Servings size - 3)
1 tsp London Dry Gin
1 tsp Bacardi Gold
1 tsp Bacardi Superior
1 tsp Tsantali Ouzo
1 tsp Don Puerto Rico Rum
1 tsp Skyy Citrus Infused Vodka
1 tsp Romano Sambuca Classico
1 tsp Arrow Creme De Cacao
1 tsp Triple Sec (Orange)
1 tsp Blue Curacao
1 tsp Peach Schnapps
1 tsp Absolut Kurant
1 tsp St. Elder Elderflower Liqueur
1 tsp Campari Bitter
1 tsp 99 Whipped (Whipped Cream Liqueur)
1 tsp Tito's Vodka
1 tsp Vermouth
1 TBSP Grenadine
1 TBSP Zapopan Tequila Blanco
1 TBSP Blue Agave Gold Tequila
1 TBSP Kirkland Silver Tequila
1 Shot of Malibu
4oz. Coca Cola
-Directions:
1. First, get a 12oz glass. You can get a larger glass, or even a mug, but thats around the size of the drink.
2. Measure all of your alcohol into the cup, if you don't feel like measuring, you can eyeball it, the first 17 alcohols + the grenadine will add up to about 3.5oz to 4.0oz. If you pour more than that, I'd recommend you balance the ratio between these and the Coke. But if you like a more alcohol-heavy drink, don't even bother!
3. Pour the Grenadine, Coke, and the rum.
4. Add some ice. Ideally, you'll have a large square ice cube because it doesn't melt as fast, but if not, just throw a handful of ice in.
5. Enjoy!
-Notes:
If you only have one type of tequila, you can just add the equivalent amount of one type.
I wouldn't recommend skimping on the variety - the full mixture has an indescribably unique flavor.
Recommended to drink this with cheap cigarettes and years of regret.
For optimal experience, drink through a bendy straw, silly straw, or a broken pen.

In Celebration of Ahsoka's premiere...
I made a mixed drink called "The Thrawn!" Inspired by a Star Trek cocktail found by @seikilos-stele
Tumblr media
Here's how to make it:
Get the following ingredients: 1.25fl oz/35ml vodka, 4 tsp/20ml blue curaçao, 4 tsp/20ml lime juice, 1 tbsp/15ml gomme syrup/simple syrup, 4 tsp/20ml lemonade, 2 maraschino cherries, and ice to your liking.
Combine the first four ingredients (vodka, blue Curacao, lime juice, and gomme syrup) in a blender with ice. Pour into a highball glass and pour the lemonade on top. Add the 2 cherries (for Thrawn's piercing red stare), and ta daaa! A drink to the greatest admiral the Empire has ever known!

007 Fest - Felix Friday Cocktail
Tumblr media
The Jamaica Contact with a Side of Danger
1 1/4 oz lightly aged Jamaican rum 2 oz crème de banane  1/2 oz lime juice 1/2 oz demerara syrup + 1 oz Jamaican overproof rum, served separately
Combine the first 4 ingredients with ice in a rocks glass. Serve with a shot of overproof rum on the side, to be poured in to taste.
The original film version of Felix Leiter, as introduced in the movie Dr. No, blends in while undercover by imbibing the local beverages. This simple and well-balanced cocktail features a smooth blended Jamaican rum (I recommend Appleton Signature Blend for delicious caramel notes) balanced with a quality crème de banane and fresh lime juice. Amp up the complexity with a demerara sugar syrup, and you have a handsome 4-ingredient taste of the tropics that’s fine on its own…but it’s better with a side of danger!
The Jamaican classic overproof white rum by Wray & Nephew (126 proof) brings a bright, grassy freshness to the drink…and packs one hell of a punch! Float as much or as little of the overproof rum shot atop the cocktail as you like, but be sure to keep your wits about you; you can’t afford to get so soused you miss your contact!
Note: Not all banana liqueurs are created equal, and this drink really exposes the quality of its ingredients. The pall of cloying, artificial ‘banana flavoring’ from a cheap label will murder this drink, and not in a sexy Bond Girl way (more like an eaten by sharks way). Your best selections for naturally made banana liqueurs are Giffards’ Banane du Brésil or Tempus Fugit’s Crème de Banane.
