The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 113: Creative Conversations with Abby Denson
This month, we’re returning to my Creative Conversations series! In these episodes, I talk to people in various creative fields making things today who were greatly inspired by anime & manga, and are using that inspiration today to make their own cool things. This time, we’re talking to comic artist, illustrator, and comic author Abby Denson! A longtime manga reader, Abby’s been making comics since her self-published days, and continues that DIY spirit with her latest series Kitty Sweet Tooth with Japanese artist Utomaru. Listen as we discuss her ‘90s zine roots, how BL inspired one of her early comics, and what it was like to table at Comiket in ‘97, along with answering your questions!

Fragment Skies
Vocals: 伊織 (Phantasm Harmony)
Arrangement, lyrics:
Event: Comiket 97
I'm surprised none of the tracks on this album have been translated! Honestly my favorite thing to listen to that isn't rock related. From Murasame Umbrella’s “Fragment Skies”, available for purchase and download here.
kaga no naka no tori ga kuchite hateru you ni
utsurou toki no naka te wo nobasu koto mo naku
Like a bird rotting away in its cage
I refuse to spread my wings amidst the changing times
minamo miageru sora wa yurete kasunde
ishiki wa fukaku、 fukaku e yami no soko e to
The sky that I see from below the surface wavers and grows hazy
My consciousness sinks further and further into the depths of the dark
tooi hi no kioku mo iroaserudake suteteshimaeba ii
awa wa mou ukabazu mui e to kiete dare mo inaku naru
Memories of days past only fade away, so throw them away
If I’ll only end up rotting and returning to the water, that’s fine. It doesn’t matter to me.
The bubbles no longer float, they dissolve into nothing. No one is left.
Even the blotted smiles and words will disappear, disappear. I don’t need sentimentality.
doko made mo fukaku e
tada hitasura fukaku e
dare ni mo furerareszu
ansoku no michiru bashoe
Go as far down as you can
make it your only goal
to be somewhere no one can reach you;
a resting place.
nuritsbusareru you ni tsumetasa mo jiki ni kieru
kono iro mo ushinau kurai、 kurai sekai
The coldness will vanish as if it were painted over
with a color that also mourns this bleak, bleak world
I remember a bit of what used to light up my life
But the happiness was too heavy for my hands to keep holding onto
sayonara sayonara owari ni shiyou makuwotojiru dake sore dake
dare mo ga itsuka wa inakunaru inakunaru eien wa nai kara
owari da owari da nani mo kamo mou mizu ni kaeru dake sore dake
kimi no ita shoumei mo kieteyuku kieteyuku kanshou wa iranai
Goodbye, goodbye, let’s end this. Just draw the curtains back and finish the last act.
Everyone will be gone eventually, eventually… because nothing lasts forever.
It’s the end. It’s the end of everything. I’m going back into the dark depths and that’s it
Proof that you were once here will fade away, fade away… I don’t need sentimentality.

doko made mo fukaku e
tada hitasura fukaku e

Convention Reflection
In December 2019, I visited Japan and happened to be able to experience Comiket 97. It was organized at Tokyo Big Sight and used up most of its halls. The venue was packed, even more so than Genshiken described it to be, and the experience was very overwhelming.
Perhaps the most surprising element was how organized the event was. The large crowd of people were efficiently directed; further, the organizers collected fares of all the hundreds of thousands of people personally. Moreover, artists were arranged by category, not by popularity, so when I went to the music section, I was surrounded by other musicians.
Another thing I noticed was the variety of content, even within a particular franchise. The day I went was Tuesday, which was the designated day for Touhou groups. While the Touhou series originally just consisted of video games, Touhou could be found throughout ComiKet 97. While exploring, I found Touhou spinoff games, Touhou cosplayers, Touhou art books, Touhou doujinshi, Touhou music, and other Touhou merchandise (such as dakimakura covers and acrylic keychain pieces). There were even different types of Touhou spinoffs, such as bullet hell spinoffs and adventure games. While I could not find it in person, I heard that team Shanghai Alice, the developer of the official Touhou series, also officially participated in the event as a game developer.
The event showed the sheer breadth and size of the Touhou fandom. I believe Touhou is a good example of how a community's productivity can shape and support an entire franchise. For example, in America, Touhou plushies (fumos) are possibly more popular than the actual bullet hell games. Further, the textual productivity of the fandom means there is likely more total lore in its shadow culture than its official culture.
As I bought several products, I noticed a few peculiarities. In contrast to American fans I know online, Japanese doujin circles (particularly the busy ones) seemed shy and did not want to speak too much about their products, even when I spoke in Japanese. Upon reflection, I believe that that might have been related to how Genshiken characters appeared reluctant to show their works in public or say anime quotes in public: fandom in Japan does not involve as much enunciative productivity outside of private settings. Further, the circles may have wanted to shield their private identities and maintain their privacy.
As the day grew later, I noticed that the majority of attendees left Comiket rather early in the day, even though there were thousands of doujin circle stands. I would have liked to visit all of them, but after researching Comiket further, it appears there are many days Comiket takes place. Thus, for regular attendees of Comiket, if they are unable to visit all their desired stands on the first day, they can visit the ones that attend multiple days a different day.
For me, this event was an overwhelming introduction to Japan's diverse fandom culture. While I did not feel anime as part of my identity, I believe some of the Comiket attendees put in the effort to attend and sell at Comiket because they felt fandom culture as part of their identity. Creating doujinshi, art books and games can take hundreds of hours, and many Comiket attendees create new fan goods every year (usually for the summer Comiket). Nonetheless, the signs that Japanese people feel uncomfortable talking about their hobbies, even in an event such as Comiket, suggests that anime and fan culture in Japan is not accepted openly as mainstream.
Another aspect of doujinshi culture is that doujinshis are often bought at Comiket ahead of time to be sold in new or used doujinshi stores, commonly found at Akihabara. While I was not always able to visit Comiket in Japan due to time constraints, these stores gave me and other fans more flexibility to purchase fan goods when they were not available at melonbooks.

Snow Fragment
Fragment Skies
Vocals: ヤヤネヒロコ(Lunatico_fEs)
Arrangement, lyrics:
(Tomboyish Girl in Love)
Event: Comiket 97
A love song from Cirno to Daiyousei, or maybe the other way around depending on how you look at it. It's really moving, the sense of loss completely blankets the arrangement and lyrics. Note that 蒼穹 is sung as 空 (sora).

miageru hakuiki wa mou itetsuku yuki no you ni
asahi ni tokeru magiwa hakanaku
ikudo to mita keshiki mo wakare wa otozureru you ni
itsuka wa kimi no koto wo omou no ka na
Looking up, my breath has become as cold as ice
Fleetingly, it begins to melt in the morning sun
The countless seasons I've seen and their farewells were like visitors passing by
Will I ever think of you again?
mune no naka no kioku demo aruite yukeru
Even with those memories in my heart, I can move on

kono saki nani mo kamo ga yuki no naka ni kiete mo
aa, sugu, soba, hora
kimi to ikita kioku ga sora wo terashite kureru

If everything in front of me were to fade into the snow
Ah, it's so close, come on
The memories of our lives together shine a light upon the heavens
It's right here, yeah

Time is the great equalizer, so much that even the present seems distant
Printing a sepia-tinted photograph
Tracks we left in the snow, our proof of life, were swept into a gust
Surely, they were footprints made with our shared smiles
ima mo boku no naka tsuyoku tomoru netsuryou
It's a heat that still blazes within me

sore, demo, tada, tada
kimi to mita ano sora wo kimi no ita nokoriga wo

One day everything will blur into nothingness and return to the snow
Still, it is what it is
The skies that we'd watch, the fragrance that reminds me you were here
That's all there is
kore kara mo zutto

Now and forever
I'll never forget
or lose sight of you

Hand in hand, the fragments of our ordinary days run along
I could keep chasing them even now
The memory of the warmth you left in my palm
remains so vivid, it's burned into my retinas

If everything in front of me were to fade into the snow
Ah, it's so close, come on
The memories of our lives together shine a light upon the heavens
It's right here, yeah, yeah
sore, demo, tada, tada
boku wo ikasu kotonoha fumidasu ashi wo riyuu
tada, sore dake
Even the heat of my body will one day return to the earth
Still, it is what it is
Your words which kept me alive, the reasons for me to take a step forward
That's all there is

I'm not scared
I can keep smiling
And that's alright
