Magic Square Light of Victory: Upstaged and outclassed, but still fun
Magic Square Light of Peace has been renowned as the premier Third Party Masterpiece Optimus Prime for some time now, and for good reason. He offers a high range of articulation and expression, with an intricate but not overly complicated transformation, all at a much more reasonable price point than some other official offerings. There’s also what feels like a half dozen different versions, so you’ve got plenty to pick from to fit your exact needs. With MS capitalizing on his success with MP upscales of their Combaticons, let’s take a look at where all of this started with the original Legends scale take on the design, Light of Victory.

Visually it’s… it’s another G1 Optimus Prime. It’s another G1 cartoon 1984 Optimus Prime. It’s the umpteenth really good looking cartoon accurate generation one Autobot Leader Optimus Prime. I think we’ve all accepted that they’ll be making this guy until the fucking sun implodes, but it can’t be ignored either. I was fiddling with him at my desk, looked over at my shelves, and realized I’ve got three of him in one little cubby. In my defense, however, this is also Skybound Optimus. Kind of. DWJ directly based his drawings of the big guy on MS Light of Peace, who is an upscale of this little version of the big guy. And, AND, this isn’t even the cartoon deco of the figure, so ha.

Light of Victory is about what you’d expect from a 3P Legends scale figure in terms of articulation, with the only real issue being the thigh swivels. The actual mushroom peg that allows it to swivel is very close to the hip assembly, and it’s covered from the front and outside by the rest of the leg. While this means there’s no cut or break in the sculpt, it’s right up against his crotch, meaning there isn’t much clearance for turning it inward unless you bring the leg out to the side. The result is that it looks very visually cohesive, but you are presented with a few issues when trying to get him into more dynamic poses. Other figures have used this type of thigh joint, (even my last review had it!) but it feels a bit extreme here. He has a few other minor gripes like the elbow “only” being 90°, but it’s not a huge deal and gets balanced out by things like his double jointed knees.

Inversely, I don’t much care for how his hands look. They swivel just fine, being mounted on a ball joint that lets you easily swap one out for his energon axe, but the MS signature of “permanent trigger finger” rarely looks natural and sticks out in the majority of poses, and not in a good way. It feels like they want more dynamic open hands à la NewAge, but they didn’t want to make a separate part or lose out on the ability to hold weapons with the standard closed fists. It comes off as an awkward middle ground that satisfies neither niche. Or, at the very least, I don’t like them here on Optimus. I was indifferent towards them on the likes of DX9 Mini Michael Murphy, but they feel much more strange and stilted here. He’s not pointing at anything nor does he feel particularly convicted on any matter.

Quick side note: as far as I understand it the DX9 Mini line is technically like, just Magic Square? Or is at least associated with them. The whole third party world is wild and impossible to keep track of. There’s so much damn crossover and co-ownership and sub-companies and- ugh.
While on the subject of his hands, let’s go over his accessories, c-cause like he- he holds those with- We’ve already mentioned the axe, cast in a very pretty orange plastic, and of course he comes with the ever reliable ion blaster, and a matrix. It’s tucked away in his chest and I don’t think he can hold it. It does come out, but his hands are so rigid and the matrix is so thin I’m worried it’s going to break before he gets any sort of grip on it. I’m not trying it. All it really means in the end is that you’re liable, and likely, to pop it out on accident when transforming him.

The transformation is clever, if not a tad fiddly at this scale. There doesn’t feel like there’s enough room for you to get your fingers in and move things the way you need to, and that’s on top of some regular slight clearance issues. Space is a luxury. Light of Peace is probably more fun to handle for this reason, any quirks being worked out aside there’s just more toy for you to get your hands on. While I don’t have him myself, I can tell you that Victory here is almost the exact same when it comes to transformation. They really did just size it up, though they did use the extra space to add a few smaller touches and seemingly smooth out the experience.

The final truck mode does look nice, that all said. It’s Optimus, we’ve been over this no less than three separate times, but kudos for keeping the grill as the same part between modes. I know not every OP does it and I know some vehemently appreciate it when they do. Things do kind of fall apart when you go to the back, with the bed barely passing as such. It holds together mostly fine, once you have everything tabbed together it’s not going anywhere, but the top panels don’t sit flush and end up a bit squishy. Clearance is tight in his undercarriage, with his wheels just barely clearing his shins. I’m not sure how related it is but he doesn’t roll very freely. His wheels are pinned and the tires are… soft. Probably rubber but I can’t say for certain, but they don’t save things. The back wheels are very “sticky” and don’t want to move much, at least on my copy.

So what role does Light of Victory play in the endless world of Optimus Primes? Does… he need to fill one? While his transformation exists in a larger, easier to handle figure, and there’s other options for a small scale Prime, there’s nothing wrong with him being one of those options. I stand by the belief that we currently live in a golden age for transformers collecting, with both official and third party offering no shortage of high quality options to choose from. Where as before you might have had trouble simply finding a representation of a character, now you might have too many to choose from. Optimus has… never really had this problem, but maybe Victory will be the light at the end of your tunnel.

WASHINGTON—The Justice Department is preparing to take legal action against Live Nation Entertainment Inc. on allegations the company has sought to strong-arm concert venues into using its Ticketmaster subsidiary, according to people familiar with the matter.
The department believes the concert-promotion giant’s conduct has violated the merger settlement Live Nation and the dominant ticket seller reached with the government in 2010, the people said. Under that agreement, the department’s antitrust division allowed the companies to combine, but required them to abide by conditions designed to keep consumer prices in check by preserving competition in the music and ticketing industries.
As ticket prices have risen, critics have questioned whether the settlement has worked as intended. It is due to expire next year, but the Justice Department now plans to ask a judge to extend the restrictions by several years and prevent the alleged coercive conduct by Live Nation, the people said.
Live Nation’s chief executive has publicly denied that the company has violated its agreement. The company and the Justice Department have engaged in talks but haven’t settled their differences, people familiar with the matter said.
Details about the department’s specific concerns couldn’t immediately be learned.
The Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger consolidated two of the most powerful forces in the music industry. Ticketmaster holds an estimated 80% of its market, according to people in the concert industry. As the world’s largest concert promoter, Live Nation organizes live music events by booking talent, securing venues, setting ticket prices and marketing shows. It has also built a robust artist-management business.
The merger faced opposition at the time it was announced in 2009, and the decision by the Obama-era Justice Department to allow the deal with a settlement wasn’t well-received in some industry and consumer circles. Critics who say U.S. antitrust enforcement has been too lax often point to the merger as one where the government should have taken a harder line to protect consumers.
In the past decade, and particularly over the past few years, ticket prices have soared—increasing by nearly 50% since 2009 to $92.42 on average for the top 100 tours world-wide, according to Pollstar.
The settlement, known as a consent decree, forbid Live Nation from forcing venues that want to book the concert promoter’s tours to use Ticketmaster for those shows, and from retaliating when venues choose to use a ticketing competitor instead.
The deal also required Ticketmaster to license its technology to Anschutz Entertainment Group, the distant No. 2 concert promoter, to build a competitive ticketing platform. That ticketing service, AXS, has had limited success outside of AEG’s own venues.
Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim, the Justice Department’s antitrust chief, confirmed during a September Senate hearing that the department was investigating allegations that Live Nation had been violating the decree.
Typically, venues ranging from nightclubs and theaters to arenas and stadiums enter long-term contracts giving a ticketing provider the exclusive right to sell tickets to any event they host. Over the years, Live Nation’s competitors have accused it of using its market power as a concert promoter and artist manager to coerce venues into using Ticketmaster or risk losing out on lucrative bookings.
While in theory advances in new technology have made it easier for other ticketing companies to challenge Ticketmaster, in practice few venues have defected from their longstanding contracts with the giant, according to people in the industry. Almost 10 years since the decree was put in place, Ticketmaster has no serious competitor.
Live Nation previously dismissed the calls for investigation as based on a misunderstanding of the decree and ticketing-industry dynamics. Speaking at a conference in September, Live Nation Chief Executive Michael Rapino said the decree allows the company to make decisions that are “right for our business,” and that booking a Live Nation tour date at a venue that uses a ticketing provider other than Ticketmaster may not make economic sense for the company. He acknowledged that competitors have raised flags to the Justice Department, but said the company had never been found to engage in wrongdoing.
“We have no fear that we have any systematic issues. We’re very compliant,” he said.
The company has been facing fire from Congress as well as the Justice Department.
In August, Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) and Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) asked the Justice Department to investigate the state of competition in ticketing, focusing on the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger.
“Live Nation’s dominance in the sector raises serious antitrust concerns. I’m glad that the Department of Justice is preparing to take action,” Ms. Klobuchar said Friday.
Earlier this month, four House lawmakers sent a letter to the department that expressed concerns about the merger, saying, “Our constituents are facing significantly increased live event prices and a lack of meaningful alternatives to purchase tickets to live events.”
The signatories were Reps. Ken Buck (R., Colo.), Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.), Lucy McBath (D., Ga.) and James Sensenbrenner (R., Wis.).
The Justice Department rarely has sued companies for alleged violations of antitrust consent decrees, but Mr. Delrahim has publicly voiced the need for companies to abide by their commitments. He has called for changes in decree language that would make it easier for the department to establish violations in court, and to force merged companies to pay the government’s costs in enforcing merger settlements.
The Live Nation decree has arisen recently in a second context with the Justice Department. The company has asked the department for permission to explore a transaction involving Rival, a ticketing company launched last year by former Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard, according to people familiar with the matter.
The decree requires Live Nation to give notice of any potential transactions with a ticketing company so the department can investigate the competitive effects of such a deal.
Mr. Hubbard led Ticketmaster for four years after the merger.
Mr. Hubbard, whose efforts attracted high-profile backers including top Silicon Valley venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and Santa Monica, Calif.-based Upfront Ventures, envisioned that fully digitizing tickets could address inefficiencies in how live events operate and make them safer by connecting identity, payment and location data.
He built the aptly named Rival to be what he hoped would be a serious competitor in ticketing.

In a year where so many things went wrong, video games were pretty much one of the very few Highlights that stood out in 2020.

According to a report by Grand View Research, Inc., automobile aftermarket industry is evolving fast and is expected to reach more than $486 billion by 2025. It is found that the trend of customer intention to buy auto parts online, doubled, in a span of 3 years. In addition, according to Pixel Produtions, Inc., there are 70 million auto parts (aftermarket) searches every month on Google. While it is a lucrative proposition, after-sales market is tricky for many reasons. While everyone uses cars, most of them do not repair their own car. Although there is a slight growth in DIY enthusiasts, these numbers still amount to only a fraction. Most of the aftermarket parts are purchased by servicing stations in most markets around the world. Hence, the aftermarket sales are largely a B2B market. In this blog, we try to look at some key challenges of automobile aftermarket ecommerce and role of a partner in its success.

What is EVOLUTE?

What is RTLA50 scale?
RTLA50 incorporates the same stainless steel tape scale as RTLA, but this time with a 50 µm pitch version of our absolute scale code. It is accurate to ±10 µm/m and available in lengths up to 10.02 metres. Two mounting options are available, both of which allow independent scale thermal expansion and the convenience of tape scale.

RTLA50 can be used with the revolutionary FASTRACK™ scale carrier system. This system allows a track to be laid quickly and easily with no need for fixing holes. A sacrificial spacer is removed and the tape scale is then fed into the track.
RTLA50-S is laid onto the substrate with self-adhesive backing tape. The self-adhesive is formulated in such a way that it allows the scale to expand independently of the substrate.
To complete the installation, both types of scale are clamped at one point to provide a datum position.
Easy fault finding and servicing
The Advanced Diagnostic Tool ADTa‑100 acquires comprehensive real-time data from EVOLUTE™ encoder readheads. The information is displayed via the user-friendly ADT View software interface. Whilst in most cases the integral set-up LED on the encoder is sufficient for setting up the system, the ADT can be used to aid more challenging installations. The ADT can also report on encoder performance and assist system fault finding to avoid lengthy machine downtime.

Machine build time is critical in OEM applications as time saved in component installation allows shorter manufacturing lead times and ultimately higher profitability. The large rideheight and tolerance offered by the EVOLUTE readhead (rideheight of 0.8 mm, tolerance ±0.25 mm) ensures fast and simple installation with instant validation from the integral set‑up LED, eliminating the need for time consuming fine adjustment. This superior set-up tolerance is enabled through advanced optics and by not following the conventional absolute measurement technique of using dual tracks side-by-side (one incremental, one absolute) which inherently suffer de-phasing problems when small amounts of angular misalignment are introduced.
Robust operation
Minimising down-time is a top priority for end-users of production machinery. The EVOLUTE encoder ensures up-time through multiple mechanisms that enable high dirt immunity for an optical system: a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is used to analyse captured data from the custom image sensor and work with the optical imaging system to overcome light scattering effects of oily or greasy smears that may cause other encoders to fail; the custom point-source LED changes its flash duration to provide the best signal integrity for all traversing speeds; and finally, substantial redundancy is built into the absolute code pattern, allowing the EVOLUTE readhead to function over parts of the scale that are partially obscured by particulate contamination.
