Calling Minor threat “Straight Edge” seems both sufficient and insufficient. It works ‘cause after all they invented the term, but it doesn’t work because doing so lumps them in with a whole bunch of bands who were NOT as good as they, and with none who were.

On the other hand, even saying “East Coast Hardcore” has its issues, because through Rollins, the link between Black Flag and Minor Threat, West vs. East, was probably greater than the one that existed between Minor Threat and let’s say, Bad Brains, who came from the same town

ohhh this is the best question…. alright

happiness and surrounding suburbs: sad rude future dude (for the vibes - yelling EVERYBODY WAAAAKE UP is extremely fun, i like the lyrics in general, it’s a banger), OR birds down basements / glass jar (placing these two together because i find them both really pretty; i love the harmonies and chorus in BDB and GJ hits a good medium between upbeat and pretty)

museum: surrender (probably my favourite song from BPM ever - i love the lyrics, i love the sound, i LOVE the music video. absolute banger, i want to hear it live again one day). note: museum as an album has grown on me and it holds a lot of my favourite tracks if i were to do an “every song” ranking

puddinghead: she only loves me when i’m there (classic for a reason, incredibly fun to sing and dance to, fantastic beginning AND use of the word architraves) OR a good life is the best revenge (pretty much the same reasons, i like to mime a little bow at ‘your royal highness’, i like the song’s sentiment)

every night the same dream: don’t look at me like that (i like the vibes)

GOOD MOOD: the end times (i’m a sucker for songs that are about / mention the end of the world)

ball park music: spark up! (SUCH a banger. i played this on repeat for days after the first time i saw them) OR turning zero (i like the lyrics and i think it sounds pretty) HONOURABLE MENTION TO BAD TASTE BLUES PT III !!!! ITS GOTTA BE THEREEEEE

weirder & weirder: weirder & weirder (second favourite song from the band overall and such a me core song. love the lyrics love the overlapping parts love the notion of becoming weirder and more complicated with every year! love the metaphor for aging and becoming a person!!) honourable mention to sunscreen and three little words

like love: gabrielle (i think it’s beautiful and i couldn’t believe they played it for us!! such a gorgeous song and sam’s voice is sooooooo….) it would honestly be easier to list the songs i didn’t like from this album, i think it’s really solid and well put together

one thing about me is that i love music and i listen to it all the time but i dont know a single thing about the members of the bands that i listen to. i might have seen pictures of a few of them, maybe know a few of their names. but like if there are multiple people in a band that sing? i can not tell you who sings what. i'm like totally blind to being able to identify who is singing/speaking if audio is not narratively driven i think.

I've recently decided to re-start my physical music collection (cds, records, and tapes) and the way the prices for all of them increased ~30% since the last time I checked is absolutely crazy.

I guess the most difficult thing about working on this new-old collection will be actually convincing myself to buy these things at all...
