The Space Between Hearts
Tumblr media
A/N: This is Just the Plot Bunnies I Couldn’t Shake. Please Don’t Expect Any Kind of Medical Accuracy. This is inspired by House MD & a Film Called Fathers & Daughter (Loosely).
The Space Between Us.
Warnings: Migraines, Medical Talk.
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Aubrey Hurst.
Spencer Reid had one persistent, insidious problem: migraines. But his real frustration ran deeper than the searing pain. It was the half-dozen doctors who had repeatedly dismissed his symptoms, each one claiming he was wrong, that grated on him the most.
That’s how he found himself sitting stiffly across from Dr. Edwards at St. Charles Medical and Research Hospital. As soon as Spencer stepped into the stark, sterile office, he had already pegged the man as dismissive. He didn’t need his finely honed profiling skills to see it—the doctor’s disinterest was plain in the way he barely glanced up from his files, his fingers absentmindedly drumming on the desk.
“Are you having one of your headaches right now?” Dr. Edwards asked flatly, as if the answer didn’t particularly matter.
“Not at the moment,” Spencer replied, his irritation barely concealed.
“And when was the last one?”
“Two days ago.”
The doctor scribbled a note with an almost robotic detachment before glancing up, his eyebrows raised in a half-hearted show of interest. “You don’t think your headaches are psychosomatic?”
Spencer’s jaw clenched. “No,” he said firmly.
Dr. Edwards barely reacted, his expression remaining passive as he began to close the file in front of him. “Honestly, I think your migraines are stress-related,” he said with an air of finality. “But I’ll arrange for a consult with the diagnostics team. Stay here.”
Spencer bit back the urge to argue, frustration simmering beneath the surface. It wasn’t just that his headache—the one that had been steadily building since he stepped off the jet—was growing more pronounced. The bright, clinical lights overhead felt like needles pressing into his skull, amplifying the pain.
Twenty agonizing minutes passed, and the tension in the room seemed to grow with each passing second. Finally, the door creaked open. But instead of Dr. Edwards returning, two younger doctors entered the room.
The first was a man in his late twenties, with dark hair and a welcoming, unassuming presence. He was of average height, but the ease with which he carried himself gave him an air of quiet confidence. His eyes were observant, yet kind, and he wore a small smile as he stepped forward.
“I’m Dr. Daniel Rhodes,” he said, his voice calm but engaging. “I’m a diagnostic fellow here.” He gestured toward the woman standing beside him.
She was much shorter, standing at barely 5’3”, with striking features that Spencer noted immediately. Dr. Rebecca Langford, a 27-year-old neurology resident, had rich, dark skin and wore her curly hair tied back in a neat high ponytail. Despite her youthful appearance, there was a sharpness in her eyes that suggested she took her work very seriously. Still, her smile was gentle and welcoming as she nodded in acknowledgment.
“We’re with the Diagnostics Team,” Dr. Rhodes continued, his tone professional yet reassuring. “We’ve reviewed your case, and we’d like to take a closer look at what’s going on. If you’re ready, we can start now.”
Spencer slowly rose from his seat, his head pounding in rhythm with his quickening heartbeat. There was a flicker of hope in the air, mingled with his frustration. Perhaps, finally, someone would take his pain seriously and stop brushing him off.
Spencer was led to an office that was much bigger and brighter than Dr. Edwards’—which felt like it had been stuck in the 70s with its dark wood paneling and outdated decor. This new office, however, was modern and sprawling, technically three rooms separated by glass walls. In the central room, a large table was placed in the middle, surrounded by whiteboards and bookshelves. A young woman sat at the table, surrounded by a clutter of files and medical textbooks. She glanced up briefly when they entered, but quickly returned to her work. Spencer’s eyes wandered toward the back room, which was dim and empty except for the outline of a desk, a computer, and an upright piano that was tucked beneath the window.
Dr. Rhodes led him into the final room, which had a more comfortable, welcoming feel. The walls were a warm cream colour, and the space felt modern and fresh. A patient bed stood at the centre of the room, with a chair and monitoring equipment neatly arranged around it.
“Go ahead and take off your shoes and sit on the bed,” Dr. Rhodes suggested, gently pulling Spencer out of his daze.
“Sure,” Spencer replied, slipping out of his shoes and climbing onto the bed.
“I’m going to take some blood while we talk through your medical history,” Dr. Langford added, her voice calm but focused as she prepped the necessary equipment.
For the second time that day, Spencer recounted his medical history. His mother’s condition, the paranoid schizophrenia that had plagued her for as long as he could remember. His own brushes with danger—the gunshot wound, the anthrax exposure, and his brief but difficult stint with dilaudid, which made him extremely reluctant to rely on strong painkillers now.
His migraines had started about six months ago, and they had only been getting worse. Initially, he could manage them with over-the-counter pain relievers, but by Christmas, they had stopped working altogether. He had tried to push through the pain, but now it was becoming unbearable.
As Spencer spoke, he noticed that Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Langford were asking far more detailed questions than any of his previous doctors. They didn’t just focus on the surface-level details. Instead, they delved deeper—into his caffeine intake, how much sugar he consumed daily and weekly, his sleeping patterns, and where he lived. They even asked about the type of building he resided in, where he had been over the past year, and, more specifically, where he had been when he first noticed the migraines beginning.
They wanted to know what his headaches had been like before the migraines had evolved, and they didn’t shy away from the mental health side of things either. Spencer could feel himself growing defensive, even though he knew it was illogical. He had been building this defence mechanism ever since his father left him in the care of his mother—a woman whose paranoid schizophrenia had defined much of his childhood. And now, here he was, at the perfect age to potentially develop symptoms himself. Spencer was acutely aware of the statistics, the genetic predisposition, and the trauma he had endured throughout his life. He knew the risks better than most, and the thought of it all worried him far more than he cared to admit, even to himself.
Dr. Langford finished drawing Spencer’s blood and called out to the young woman in the other room. That’s when Spencer learned that she was a medical student. As the doors slid open, he noticed for the first time that the office at the far end of the room now had its light on.
“Thanks,” Dr. Langford said as the medical student quickly took the vials of blood from her and exited the room, following Dr. Rhodes.
Then, Dr. Langford turned back to Spencer and resumed her questioning.
“Any hallucinations?” she asked, her tone even and professional.
“No,” Spencer replied, shaking his head.
“Are you just saying no because of your history?” she probed.
“No,” he said again, a little more firmly.
“No visual or audible hallucinations?” she pressed.
“No,” he answered, his patience holding.
“Any colours or auras?”
“No,” he said, and this time, she seemed satisfied.
“Okay,” she nodded. She paused for a moment before asking, “You don’t think your headaches are psychosomatic?”
Spencer exhaled, barely managing to keep his frustration at bay. “No,” he answered, the word clipped.
“Okay,” she said, offering a small, understanding smile.
Just then, the door creaked open again, and a new presence entered the room.
“Hi,” the newcomer said, her voice warm and inviting.
Spencer turned his gaze toward her. “Hello,” he replied.
“I’m Dr. Hurst, the head of diagnostics here,” she introduced herself with a soft smile. Dr. Hurst was a 29-year-old woman with a naturally friendly expression, framed by shoulder-length brown hair that was parted neatly down the middle. She wore a black coat layered over a simple black dress. Her demeanour was professional, yet approachable, and though she smiled warmly at Spencer, he couldn’t help but notice a faint sadness lingering in her eyes, as if something weighed on her despite the smile she presented.
Even as Spencer observed her, she radiated an aura of confidence and care, putting him slightly more at ease. Still, the sadness in her gaze intrigued him, almost as much as her curiosity about his condition. He wondered silently what she had seen to put that sadness there, but quickly reminded himself that this wasn’t about her—this was about his migraines, his pain, and the answers he so desperately sought.

The gurgoyle power armor is a full environmental suit with robot augmentation much like the human suits. It is giant-sized because the wearer is a giant. The armor has wicked, spiked shoulder plates, jet thrusters for power leaps , and a few basic weapons. The complexity of the weapons and the suit's operation have been kept to a minimum. Weapons are deliberately familiar and easy to use. They include vibro-claws for hand to hand combat, a vibro-axe, an optional hand-gun and built-in ion blasters and mini-missiles . The sensor and communication system are similar to those of the human units , but with simpler display screens and more automated systems to make the armor user friendly.

the MDL comment section for this drama is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to (bad) takes on Gil Chae and Ryang Eum, and so i thought i should copy something i posted over there in response to several people calling Ryang Eum 'toxic' and a 'liar', as well as add a few extra things:
if we're going to bring up lying, then first off we have to establish that every member of this love triangle have lied to each other at at least one point or another during the series. Gil Chae lied to Soon Yuk about marrying him after he came home from the war if he protected Young Master Yeon Joon and also lied to Jang Hyun about said young master being the one she was thinking of when she called him husband at the end of ep 4, Ryang Eum lied to Jang Hyun about who Gil Chae had looked at when the announcement of war came during the sixtieth anniversary celebration in ep 2, and Jang Hyun lied to Ryang Eum about losing the dagger he had given him as a gift (token of love *cough*) when he had actually given it to Gil Chae to defend herself while they were on the run. it's probably not a good idea to start ranking the lies by the percentage of morality/who got hurt as a result bc that's mostly absent here—a driving concept in MD is that nothing is truly black and white—but that levels the playing field pretty evenly imo.
now the story Ryang Eum told in ep 8 on the journey to Shimyang is not toxic, by any means. it is a well-known folktale in Korea that has been retold both in various folk song recordings and in a 1972 film, and the basic gist of the story is that Gap Dol and Gap Soon loved each other but never quite said it directly/strongly enough (Jang Hyun and Gil Chae dancing around each other anyone?), hence Gap Soon getting married off to another man (Gil Chae's miliary officer suitor) and having his children. there are variations that have Gap Dol coming to ask Gap Soon to run away with him (besties if this keeps going where we think it might we're in danger), but that story was brought up in response to Jang Hyun's query of if it was possible to have one man in your heart for so long and not change, after his conversation with Gil Chae on the ridge; Ryang Eum said that it was, although he did note that 'you cannot do it by effort. nobody, no one can touch that forever until the day you die'. did he use this to partially warn Jang Hyun off of pursuing Gil Chae out of selfish reasons (i said in the tags of a previous post that that line sounded like he was talking more about himself than her)? yes. is he also genuinely concerned about Jang Hyun getting his heart broken by someone who is apparently in love with someone else despite her actions? yes.
we know, by now, that Ryang Eum is in love with Jang Hyun. we also know that Jang Hyun has squarely friendzoned him, though it's still up in the air whether he knows about Ryang Eum's feelings or not. so far, up to ep 8, he hasn't done anything we can really consider as sabotage to the main couple, and from what i've seen of the commentary on ep 9 hasn't done anything in that regard either (except return home early and possibly run into Gil Chae, but we all know the editing on these things when they want to conceal sh*t is shady af). if he really did decide to not to carry Jang Hyun's message in ep 10 specifically so that Gil Chae would go and get married anyway, then we can talk about crossing the line and entering the toxic SL arc and that, by extension, would warrant whatever tf is going on with him in the apparent ep 10 preview. (i have heard the rumors. they're not good) to me, he's not quite there yet. if he was, then we'd have to bring up Gil Chae and her multiple attempts to draw Yeon Joon away from Eun Ae early in the series, and i can hear the misogyny and Gil Chae hater brigade coming back again to join the party from here. if that doesn't happen, then, there's probably another reason why he and Jang Hyun are at odds. not sure if anything can be truly worse than that, but we'll see ig sksksksk

When an ancient tribe destroyed a sacred oasis during a war against their rivals, a persistent and vicious curse was laid down upon them. Now, millennia later, they still wander the desert, unable to pass on and carrying a sandstorm within their very body. Their breath whips up the winds around them, shrouding them in a cloud of sand that obscures their form and can even kill, and they leave the desiccated husks of those they meet half buried in the sand behind them.
While most accursed defilers travel alone or in small groups of their own, a small number have been recruited by more powerful undead to help control their interests within desert regions. The defilers rarely leave the desert itself though, drawn by the curse to remain within, never able to understand that leaving the desert would allow them to be finally destroyed. Instead they vent the thousands of years of hatred within them on any they see, convinced that there is no escape possible. Even if they did know however, could they hold back this ancient fury long enough to embrace the death available to them?

Worthy Brief - August 25, 2023
Radiate His glory!
Psalms 27:1,5,14 Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
Traditionally in Jewish spirituality, these 40 days of prayer and repentance beginning the 1st of Elul to Yom Kippur parallel the 40 days that Moses spent on the mountain [Exodus 34:28] pleading God's forgiveness for Israel's sin of creating and worshiping the golden calf. Interestingly, Psalm 27 is read each day of the month of Elul, along with the shofar blast in preparation for Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).
Ancient Jewish sages teach that Elul is an intense season of repentance and reckoning, preparing for a direct "face to face" encounter with God. Their belief is that such repentance qualifies us to be in right standing with the Almighty, able to speak to Him without any hindrances, "face to face" as Moses did as God's friend; [Exodus 33:11]. Moses waited on the LORD for 40 days until his face radiated the glory of God; so the daily exhortation in Psalm 27 "Seek my face" [verse 8], serves for them as an exhortation during this season, with the expectation of a divine encounter.
How does seeking God's face in the presence of enemies (the major theme of Psalm 27) relate to Moses' 40 days on Mount Sinai? Simply that the sin of Israel's idolatrous worship opened the door for God's judgment, often manifested as enemy invasion. And turning back to Him was the only sure protection. Moses did this as an intercessor for the nation, as such, typifying the intercessory work of the Messiah, descending from the mountain radiant with the glory of God on His face, and carrying a second presentation of YHVH's word, the Ten Commandments.
We know, however, that repentance alone, no matter how fervent or persistent, does not qualify us for a "face-to-face" encounter with God and that the Law of Moses is insufficient to provide for us the righteousness God requires for intimate communion with Him. In fact, the apostle Paul describes the covenant of Moses: "…the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones…[2 Corinthians 3:7], even though it appeared with the glory of God on His servant's face.
But, "..we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord;" [2 Corinthians 3:18]. Beholding the glory of Messiah, waiting on Him in this, or any season, will cause us to radiate His nature, presence, and love. This is the amazing glory of the New Covenant in His blood, access to the very presence of God through Yeshua the Messiah. Spend time in His Presence, radiate His glory.
Have a great weekend! Shabbat Shalom!
Your family in the Lord with much agape love,
George, Baht Rivka, Obadiah and Elianna (Dallas, TX) (Baltimore, MD)

I was 100% correct about the dispensary. patients will still need to pay 200$ to get their medical card while jimmy joe bob in front of me gets scott free AND there's no days for patients only. just think they say you (patients) get all these great deals we run instead. recreational dont get that measly 20% off. the great deals that ain't so great and you are out of stock now anyway. you people fucking suck. give me my weed you fucking pirate. I have to tell you the loyalty I had to this place is now dead. I need to find a patients only dispensary. dont exist. why? capitalistic greed. lies from the state oh we will set aside the highest strains for patients. the ones that cost the most, mind you. boy what a fucking favor. im so beside myself. if it were fucking true. stock is fucking gone. I had to choose what I didn't want and pay extra for it. I made no bones about it. cash out all my points Im not coming back here anymore. you shit on your patients who are supposed to be your priority. so Im on the lookout for a better experience as a real patient with my fake ass medical card that I have to continue to pay for according to some shitstain in a suit up in Annapolis state hall who has never even smelled weed but he sure is taking my 200 a year for the weed license which in the state of MD you get cannabis card you can not get a concealed carry license. so Im gonna bet the recreational shitheads have no such restrictions only us patients who followed the rules and paid our dues diligently. we bare the brunt of the taxation laws. we gotta pay for the license, we can no longer carry concealed protection but the fucking crips ahead of me in line have no problem whatsoever. fuckong state of Maryland. what a fucking joke. we pay higher taxes than the rest of the country to live in a crumbling city infested with rats and 9 times out of ten has been honored as the murder capital of the entire united fucking states. they tax you coming and going and even once tried to tax us for fucking rain. rain!! they tax us dry like wringing out a rag for every last drop of blood they can suck from you. and in Baltimore we see none of those taxes go towards anything usefull. our roads are like endless crumbling pot holes destroying our cars and defacing our neighborhoods. my neighbors and I all have 4 wheel drive suvs and its even tearing them up because these fucking side streets are like mountain ranges. its fucking unacceptable. those taxes we pay in the fucking billions goes nowhere in the city or county except into the deep pockets of all the corrupt politicians in baltimore. and don't even try to tell me that the Baltimore city in Baltimore County police forces are in fucking cahoots with the area gangs. They stand back take their cuts and only see what they want to see. Unless of course, which we've had quite a few of them in Baltimore, are the cops that are totally on the take and are out there making their own money on drugs and prostitution and whatever else they can get their hands on. I know I've been guilty at times of saying all cops are bastards but I'm actually too intelligent to actually fall for that because there are some good cops out there and they sure are drowning and swamped in a sea of the fucking corruption. And don't even try to tell me that the politicians and the police in Baltimore are in the pockets of the gangs. There's so much money to be made and they sure are making it off the backs of the citizens of Baltimore. So as far as I'm concerned from the top down from the politician and the police Chiefs down to the officers working the street and into my dispensary where these fucking clowns are pretty much doing the same corrupt things that All State agencies do. The best thing to remember is that your dispensary is not a state run agency it is a for-profit business and they do not really give a fuck whether you are patient or a drug dealer or a teenager hookin school if you got the money baby they got the stash. Fuck them patients. We going to get paid.
I hate America. And somehow I'm supposed to feel a privilege through all this as if I'm privileged in some way. Every fucking thing under the sun is a crock of shit. Learn it early and you won't be disappointed by the amount and tonnage of shit that you will find in your life. Thank you very much ciao now and have a good day I'm going to go be miserable somewhere else.

Concealed Carry Scenarios: Real-Life Situations and How to Handle Them
Tumblr media
Carrying a concealed weapon is a significant responsibility. Those who choose to carry must be prepared not only to defend themselves but also to make split-second decisions that can have life-altering consequences. Understanding potential scenarios and the best ways to handle them can enhance your preparedness and confidence. This blog will explore several real-life concealed carry. scenarios and offer actionable advice on how to manage them effectively.
Confrontation in a Parking Lot
Imagine you are walking to your car in a parking lot when you notice someone following you. The person approaches and begins to harass you, escalating to threats.
How to Handle It:
Stay Aware: Always maintain situational awareness. Keep an eye on your surroundings and be mindful of people who may be following you.
Create Distance: Try to put as much distance between yourself and the aggressor as possible. Move to a more populated area if you can.
Verbal Commands: Use strong, clear verbal commands to de-escalate the situation. For example, “Stop! Leave me alone!”.
Non-lethal Defense: If the situation allows, consider using non-lethal methods such as a pepper spray.
Draw Your Weapon: Only if you feel your life is in imminent danger should you draw your weapon. Remember, the goal is to defuse the situation, not escalate it.
Home Invasion
You hear a window break downstairs in the middle of the night. Someone has entered your home unlawfully, and you need to act quickly to protect yourself and your family.
How to Handle It:
Call 911: Immediately call the police and inform them of the situation.
Secure Family Members: Ensure your family is safe and in a secure location, preferably a room with a lock.
Issue a Warning: If it’s safe, loudly announce that you are armed and that the police are on their way.
Defensive Position: Take a defensive position where you can see the intruder but remain covered and concealed.
Engage if Necessary: If the intruder continues to pose a threat, you may have to engage. Ensure you have a clear shot and are aware of what is beyond your target to avoid accidental harm.
Active Shooter Situation
While at a public event, an active shooter begins firing indiscriminately. You must decide whether to engage or find an escape route.
How to Handle It:
Avoid if Possible: If there is a safe route to escape, take it. The primary goal is to get to safety.
Hide if Escape is Not Possible: Find a secure hiding place and barricade yourself. Silence your phone and stay quiet.
Defend as a Last Resort: If you cannot escape or hide and are directly confronted by the shooter, you may have to engage to protect yourself and others.
Coordinate with Law Enforcement: When law enforcement arrives, follow their commands and identify yourself as a concealed carrier to avoid confusion.
Mugging on the Street
While walking home, a mugger approaches, brandishing a weapon and demanding your valuables.
How to Handle It:
Comply Initially: In many cases, handing over your valuables can resolve the situation without violence.
Assess the Threat: If the mugger becomes more aggressive or you believe they will harm you, prepare to defend yourself.
Draw Your Weapon if Necessary: If your life is at risk, draw your weapon, making sure you have a clear shot and that bystanders are not in danger.
Command Presence: Use strong, clear commands such as “Stop! Drop the weapon!” to deter the attacker.
Road Rage Incident
A driver aggressively follows you after a minor traffic altercation. They eventually block your car and approach you in a threatening manner.
How to Handle It:
Avoid Confrontation: Try to de-escalate by driving to a public, well-lit area.
Stay in Your Vehicle: Lock your doors and stay inside your car. Use your horn to attract attention.
Call the Police: Inform the authorities of the situation and your location.
Defensive Position: If the aggressor attempts to break into your vehicle, be prepared to defend yourself. Drawing your weapon should be a last resort, only if there is an imminent threat to your life.
Encounter with Law Enforcement
While carrying concealed, you are stopped by a police officer for a traffic violation or other reason.
How to Handle It:
Inform the Officer: As soon as possible, calmly inform the officer that you are carrying a concealed weapon and have a permit.
Follow Instructions: Follow the officer’s instructions without making sudden movements. Keep your hands visible at all times.
Communicate Clearly: Explain any actions you need to take, such as reaching for your license or registration.
Carrying a concealed weapon requires more than just technical proficiency; it demands a high level of judgment, awareness, and responsibility. By understanding and preparing for these real-life scenarios, you can better protect yourself and those around you. Joan Ringelheim, scholar of women during the Holocaust, dies at 82
By Emily Langer
October 29, 2021 at 8:46 p.m. EDT
Joan Ringelheim spent nearly two decades on the staff of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, where for years she oversaw its oral history archive, one of the most significant collections of Holocaust testimonies in the world.
Her study of the Nazi murder of 6 million European Jews, she once remarked, had taught her that “nobody experienced ‘the Holocaust.’ ” Rather, she said, each person present lived one piece of it, and only through the study of those many pieces would the vast whole become visible.
But for years — decades, even, after the liberation of the camps — an entire category of experiences, in Dr. Ringelheim’s observation, went overlooked in the scholarly community.
“It was my position that the lives of women had been obscured or erased from Holocaust history,” she wrote in an essay published last year in the volume “Her Story, My Story?: Writing About Women and the Holocaust.” “Women’s experiences had been neutralized into a so-called ‘human perspective’ so that issues related specifically to women were excluded from Holocaust history.”
Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. Ringelheim led a small but insistent group of scholars who forced historical attention on the female victims of Nazi persecution — the women who muffled their babies’ cries in hiding, comforted their children on overnight trains to Auschwitz and endured sexual violence and exploitation, often to survive.
“Jewish women and men experienced unrelieved suffering during the Holocaust,” Dr. Ringelheim wrote in the volume “Women in the Holocaust,” edited by Dalia Ofer and Lenore J. Weitzman. But “Jewish women carried the burdens of sexual victimization, pregnancy, abortion, childbirth, killing of newborn babies in the camps to save the mothers, care of children, and many decisions about separation from children.”
“If in the gas chambers or before the firing squads all Jews seemed alike to the Nazis,” Dr. Ringelheim continued, “the path to this end was not always the same for women and men. The end — namely, annihilation or death — does not describe or explain the process.”
Dr. Ringelheim, a scholar credited by colleagues with leading historians to a deeper understanding of the Holocaust in all its dimensions, died Oct. 22 at her home in Columbia, Md. She was 82 and had breast cancer, said her spouse, Ellen Carr.
The daughter of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Dr. Ringelheim lost numerous relatives in the Nazi slaughter and entered academia in the 1960s, just as the field of Holocaust studies began to take shape.
She brought to her scholarship a background in philosophy as well as feminist theory and by the mid-1970s found herself asking a seemingly simple but ultimately provocative question: What did it mean to be a woman during the Holocaust?
In 1983, she and Esther Katz, both then affiliated with the Institute for Research in History in New York, organized a conference titled “Women Surviving: The Holocaust.” They invited participants including Cynthia Ozick, the writer best known for her short story “The Shawl,” about a mother who tries to conceal her young daughter in a concentration camp by hiding her in the mantle of the story’s title. A guard ultimately discovers the child and tosses her tiny body against an electrified fence.
Ozick rejected the invitation to the conference and replied, according to Dr. Ringelheim, that by examining the specific concerns of women, the organizers were “asking a morally wrong question, a question that leads us still further down the road of eradicating Jews from history.”
“Your project is, in my view, an ambitious falsehood,” Ozick wrote, according to Dr. Ringelheim’s account. “The Holocaust happened to victims who were not seen as men, women, or children . . . but as Jews.”
But for scholars who supported and built on Dr. Ringelheim’s scholarship in the succeeding years, the conference was a revelatory event.
“Until 1983, with the first conference on women and the Holocaust, we did not have a dedicated study into how women specifically navigated aspects of their lives in these moments of crisis,” Jennifer V. Evans, a professor of history at Carleton University in Ottawa, wrote in an email.
“We didn’t study how women navigated adolescence and coming of age in the shadow of mass death, how they fought to keep family together, care for children and elders in ghettos, how they experienced pregnancy, childbirth and menstruation in the camps, how young and old experienced sexual vulnerability, abuse, sexual barter and rape.”
Dr. Ringelheim’s scholarship, she added, “opened the door to future histories.”
Over two days, 400 scholars, survivors, students, children of survivors and others gathered at the Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in Manhattan for a gathering covered by the New York Times.
Some survivors recalled that domestic skills, such as the ability to sew uniforms, allowed them to survive in the camps. Those who had fought in the resistance reported that they often took on the most perilous assignments because they were perceived as less suspect than their male comrades.
“People couldn’t imagine that a nicely dressed young woman could be up to mischief,” recounted Vera Laska, a Czech resistance fighter.
Jolly Zeleny, a survivor of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and several other camps, recalled the contrast she noted between male and female inmates. “Both men and women were skeletons, in identical stripes, yet there was such a difference,” she said. “The men’s bodies reflected so much more pessimism than did ours.”
Aside from its academic value, the conference offered female survivors a sense of community and the assurance that they were not alone.
“It was a way of, first of all, bringing attention to the issue, but also making the women feel comfortable,” said Katz, a scholar of women’s studies who later founded the Margaret Sanger Papers Project at New York University. “The more women who talked about it publicly,” Katz said, “the easier it was for other survivors to come forward.”
Joan Ringelheim was born in Brooklyn on May 29, 1939. For a period of her adult life she used the middle name Miriam, after her paternal grandmother, who was murdered in the Holocaust. In the United States, Dr. Ringelheim’s father owned a restaurant supply business, and her mother worked as a department store clerk.
In her contribution to the book “Her Story, My Story?,” edited by Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz and Ofer, Dr. Ringelheim wrote that she first met Holocaust survivors when she was 11 or 12 years old.
“At first, survivors frightened me,” she wrote. “I felt that they might have done something terrible in order to survive. In retrospect I think that I didn’t want to hear how awful it was for them because it was too much for me.”
Dr. Ringelheim enrolled at Boston University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1961, followed by a master’s degree in 1965 and a PhD in 1968, both in philosophy.
She taught at several colleges, including DePauw University in Indiana, before joining the Holocaust museum in 1989.
Sara J. Bloomfield, the museum’s director, credited Dr. Ringelheim in an interview with playing “a very critical role in the creation” of the permanent exhibit before the museum opened in 1993. Dr. Ringelheim later served as director of education and director of oral history before retiring in 2007. She personally conducted many interviews, sometimes spending entire days with survivors in their homes, recording their unsparing testimonies.
She and Carr, who were partners of 13 years, were married in 2018. Besides Carr, of Columbia, survivors include a brother.
In the early years after the end of World War II and to this day, perhaps the most famous victim of the Holocaust is a woman — a young one, Anne Frank, the German-born diarist whose account of her family’s time in hiding in an Amsterdam annex became an international bestseller, the basis of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play and the subject of a 1959 Hollywood movie.
Anne died of typhus in 1945, at age 15, at Bergen-Belsen. Over the years, millions of readers have drawn inspiration, even hope, from her posthumously published diary, and her declaration that “in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
Speaking to the New Jersey Jewish News, Dr. Ringelheim once said that “there is no redemptive meaning to be found for me in the Holocaust.” The event could be repeated, she feared. “Our obligation,” she added, “even if it does no good, is to remember.”

Ragewalker
Image found in the Wizards of the Coast Monster Manual III art gallery archive here.
Image description: This tall creature looks at once slender and deadly. Its generally humanoid body has thin legs and arms, and its features are concealed by tight-fitting metal armor. The creature’s movements are graceful and sure, yet they are sharp and angry at the same time. Swords, axes, and other bladed weapons spin around the creature in a tight cloud. These weapons look sharp and deadly, but none comes close enough to the creature that it risks striking itself. In its hands it wields a long chain, each link spiked and clawed rings sitting on each end.
Ragewalkers are a twist on the natural world, embodying war and combat as brought in by sapient beings. When a war ravages the countryside a ragewalker may be born, walking forth from the destruction and carrying the death it was born within. It is believed that they are a recently birthed kind of fey, and may be the result of the spirits of destroyed fey binding together during a natural rebirth into something influenced by the new state of the world.
The motive of ragewalkers is unclear, as they rarely bother to discuss their intentions or actions with any. They simply seek out the targets they wish destroyed and turn person and beast alike against themselves in a frenzy of blood and death. They can even turn ranged attacks directed at them back against the attacker, making them risky to attack from a distance except in larger numbers. Ragewalkers are good at picking the best attacks to return, and can even cause a giant’s boulder to reverse back at the original target in a devastating strike.
Under their armor, ragewalkers have a light gray skin that almost looks like a continuation of their armor, and their faces are always distorted by bloodlust. Few see under their armor however, as they are always clad head to toe in tightly locked together plates of armor that give them exceptional protection without reducing mobility or hindering the ragewalker in any way. Their most distinct feature however is a cloud of weapons constantly flying around it, collected from its surroundings and constantly replenished as the older ones wear down or break. They typically stand around 15 feet tall, and weigh between 700 and 1,000 pounds.
5th Edition
Ragewalker Large fey, unaligned Armor Class 21 (grafted armor) Hit Points 190 (20d10 + 80) Speed 50 ft. Str 19 (+4) Dex20 (+5) Con 19 (+4) Int 10 (+0) Wis 14 (+2) Cha 19 (+4) Saving Throws Dex +10, Con +9, Wis +7, Cha +9 Skills Athletics +9, Perception +7, Stealth +10 Senses passive Perception 17 Languages Common, Sylvan Challenge 14 (11500 XP) Weapon Cloud. A creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the ragewalker takes 7 (2d6) slashing damage. Innate Spellcasting. The ragewalker's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17). The ragewalker can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: 3/day each: magic weapon (as a 6th level spell) 1/day each: blade barrier Actions Multiattack. The ragewalker makes three spiked chain attacks and can cast one of its innate spells. Spiked Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (4d4+5) piercing damage. Incite Blood Frenzy (Recharge 5-6). Each creature within 10 feet of the ragewalker must succeed on a DC 17 Charisma saving throw or enter a blood frenzy. While in a frenzy, the creature has advantage on melee weapon attacks, but it can't use reactions, attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and it can't cast spells or concentrate on them. In addition, the creature is unable to distinguish friend from foe, and must use its actions each turn to move up to the closest creature and attack it in melee if possible. The frenzy lasts for one minute. A frenzied creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the ragewalker's Incite Frenzy for the next 24 hours. When a creature is no longer frenzied, it suffers one level of exhaustion. Reactions Repel Missile. When the ragewalker is attacked by a ranged weapon attack, before the attack is rolled, it can cause the weapon to instead turn and strike at its wielder. The attacker makes an attack against its own AC, dealing damage as normal.
13th Age
Ragewalkers occasionally appear near the Dragon Empire, spawned by the destruction caused by demons, the Crusader’s armies, the predation of the Red, and the raiding of the Warlord. Some believe they are secret servants of the High Druid, coming to wipe out all civilization to end war forever, but others have been seen aligning themselves with Dragon Empire agents against the Warlord. Whatever their goals, wherever they travel blood flows.
Ragewalker Large 7th-level wrecker [humanoid] Initiative: +14 Spiked Chain +13 vs. AC (2 attacks) - 25 damage Dual Hit: If both attacks hit during the same turn, the ragewalker can make an incite frenzy attack during its next turn as a standard action. [Special Trigger] Incite Blood Frenzy +12 vs. MD (1d3+1 nearby enemies) - The target gains a +2 bonus to attack rolls, a -2 penalty to all defenses, and is confused (save ends all) Natural 16+: The ragewalker can also make a spiked chain attack against the target. C: Blade Barrier +12 vs. PD (all engaged enemies) - 25 damage Natural 14+: The target is also dazed until the end of the ragewalker’s next turn. Limited Use: 1/battle. [Special Trigger] C: Repel Missiles +12 vs. AC (one enemy) - 25 damage, and the triggering attack misses and has no effect on the ragewalker Limited Use: 1/round, as an interrupt action when an enemy attacks the ragewalker with a ranged weapon and rolls a natural odd attack roll. Weapon Cloud: An enemy that engages the ragewalker takes 7 damage. AC 25 PD 21 MD 17 HP 175
