The Christmas Tree Cluster & Cone Nebula Last year I had a plan to post an image of this on Christmas day but I was thwarted by having Covid-19 for a month and a hospital stay the week of Christmas. I did eventually capture this target at the beginning of the year, but I wanted a slightly wider perspective over my 480mm. I captured it, along with the Rosette Nebula in March at 180mm, but that was a little too wide to get it how I wanted. Splitting the difference, he it is at 275mm. Posted @withregram • @chrisastrophoto NGC 2264 (Conus Nebula, Christmas Tree Cluster, Fox Fur Nebula) Emission nebulae, dust and molecular clouds in constellation Monoceros. I have rotated the image so that the Christmas tree is shown upright. The brightest star in this image (S Mon) is just in the trunk of the tree and the tree top is the star close to the dark Cone Nebula. The Fox Fur Nebula is located around the blue bubble. This complex structure is about 2300 light years away and is another location of star formation in our Milky Way galaxy. Normally I would acquire this region with broadband RGB filters or without any filter, because it contains reflection nebula which shine in light of the full visible spectrum. Low altitude above the horizon, light pollution and almost 80% moon however required the usage of a double narrowband filter, so that I am for now left with this reddish image. Only a bluish bubble is left around one star, reflected light from one of the young stars in that region. I finally solved my problem with sensor tilt on the RASA, but just now my mount is getting pretty bad in tracking on one axis. I lost therefore more than half of my subs due to bad tracking and guiding. Moonlight and reduced number of usable sub frames left me with quite some noise in the image. This is first light for my RisingCam ATR3CMOS26000KPA, which is effectively very similar (same sensor) to the ASI 2600MC Pro, but with a significantly lower price. Cone Nebula - This photo includes the Cone Nebula, Christmas Tree Cluster and the Fox Fur Nebula. I'm slowly improving the shape and size of my stars. Thanks to the great help I've received from Alex Obrads I've been able to make some small improvements, but also discovered that one of the components of my telescope is not up to standard. When I can afford the $270 price tag, I'll be able to replace the coma corrector and hopefully finally get round stars from corner to corner. I also somehow made a mistake when setting up this shot, and the camera only recorded the images at 1/4 resolution. Christmas Tree Cluster & Cone Nebula This time taken with the Meade 80mm Triplet at 480mm, I was only able to get 1.5 hours of data last month before my laptop died. I am still working on solutions... plus the courage... to use the new laptop out in the really cold weather. The new laptop is not as rugged as my old one.
