Le 12 mars 2019, un consortium international de chercheurs majoritairement italiens et du controversé Institut Ramazzini [1] – a publié un nouvel article [2] sur les effets du glyphosate et d'un herbicide Roundup® sur le développement et le système endocrinien chez des rats.

En réalité, cette étude a produit des résultats rassurants, lesquels n'infirment pas le consensus des agences d'évaluation telles que l'Autorité Européenne de Sécurité des Aliments (EFSA) [4], l'Agence Américaine de Protection de l'Environnement (EPA) [5] ou Santé Canada [6] selon lequel le poids de la preuve indique que le glyphosate n’a pas de propriétés de perturbation endocrinienne.

L'étude, qualifiée de pilote, a porté sur des effectifs très limités – 8 par groupe et sexe pour les rats sacrifiés à 6 semaines (puberté) et 10 pour les rats sacrifiés à 13 semaines (âge adulte).

On a administré aux rats, dans l'eau de boisson et à compter de la vie in utero, de 1,75 mg/kg poids corporel/jour de glyphosate, soit la dose journalière admissible aux États-Unis (DJA – en Europe, c'est 0,5 mg/kg p.c./jour). Toutefois, cette dose, considérée comme sûre, excède la quantité ingérée par les consommateurs (et même les utilisateurs) d'un facteur mille, sinon plus.

C'est donc un scénario du pire car nullement représentatif de la réalité. Les auteurs ont trouvé au final sept différences statistiquement significatives entre les rats témoins et les rats traités. Certaines sont difficilement interprétables en l'absence de connaissances sur les mécanismes d'action et de données complémentaires sur les plages de normalité, ou encore sans signification sur le plan biologique. L’étude a mesuré des dizaines, voire des centaines de paramètres.Il est donc attendu de trouver un certain nombre de différences statistiquement significatives, mais en réalité dues au hasard, et qui correspondent à des faux positifs.

Dans son rapport d'évaluation par les pairs, M. Robin Mesnage, anciennement membre de l'équipe de M. Gilles-Éric Séralini et peu suspecté de bienveillance envers le glyphosate, a écrit [3] :« La plupart des différences statistiquement significatives sont dispersées et il est difficile de trouver un schéma de toxicité clair. Il est donc très difficile de comprendre si les effets sur la santé détectés dans cette étude dépendent de la dose et s’ils pourraient être reproduits dans d’autres études. »

Les tentatives de certains médias, notamment du Monde [7], et de certaines organisations militantes de susciter une nouvelle controverse – et surtout des inquiétudes dans l'opinion publique – sont donc sans fondement.
