Day 1: Arriving in Rome

Hello everyone! Welcome to Maddy in Italy 2.0! The trip began in grand fashion when a white SUV limo pulled up to take us to JFK. We had an 8 o’clock flight, and landed in Rome at around 10 am with a 6 hour time difference and minimum turbulence. Unfortunately, I barely got 20 minutes of sleep for the whole 7 hour flight. At one point, I was so bored I started to play chess on the interactive screen in front of me and got very frustrated when the computer kept beating me, even on the easy level. Needless to say, We all got off the flight feeling exhausted. After being shuttled to our hotel, we met up with Nanny and Lauren who had been in Ireland for the past couple days. Knowing we would destroy our sleep schedule if we took a nap, we went out for lunch at a nearby restaurant, which was very good (along with the cup of cappuccino that gave me a much needed boost. I’m not a coffee drinker, but when in Rome.....). We got to explore the neighborhood a little bit. I believe we’re staying in a much older part of Rome than we had two years ago. In fact, right down the road is a college for Irish monks, which I think is pretty cool. After getting back to the hotel, everyone decided that they needed a power nap before we had our first official meeting with our tour group that evening. Mom and I are rooming together, and we agreed that we should really try to stay awake so we could get a good night sleep and not mess with our sleep schedule  any more than we already had. So we decided to go out and explore the neighborhood even more. And we just so happened to stumble across one of the most photographed places in Rome, the Spanish steps. I had been there two years ago, but this time we decided to go into the church these famous flights of stairs lead to, the Trinita dei Monti, which I think translates to the Trinity of the Mount. Surprisingly, this was a very modest church, and we didn’t spend much time there because I got a huge blister from one of my shoes. With our expedition cut short, we returned to our room. I had to literally stand up to keep from falling asleep while waiting for dinner with the group. I guess the only thing worse than being tired because you took a nap and didn’t get a good night sleep is... being even more tired? Lunch with the group was a lot of fun. We (the Perrino/Ross’s) were all able to sit together and have a great opening night.

It is hot here, but it is not unbearable. I hear the coast will be a cooler 80′s F. Also, I forgot how cool it was to drive into the city. Rome is literally layers upon layers of structures. You can go from having a modern building to ancient Roman aqua ducts, which is so different from anything you could see in the much younger U.S.

Cruise ship season about to kick into high hear at Maritime ports

With summer winding down, the fall tourism season is ramping up.

That includes the cruise ship industry, which is just now sailing into its high season.

Hundreds of cruise ship visits are scheduled for the Maritimes’ four cruise ports in the next couple of months.

Tuesday was a double cruise ship day for the Port of Saint John and more than 5,000 passengers were visiting the waterfront.

The streets were buzzing with activity as tourists soak in the sights of the city.

“The architecture is just stunning and fascinating,” said tourist Craig Shaffer, who hails from Lynchburg, Va. “From Trinity Church, then the financial district, we really love those buildings.”

For the cruise ship industry, things are just now kicking into high gear.

“We say this week is like the big rollercoaster when you're hearing that final click, click, click before you take off down the big hill and that's where we're at,” said Melanie Colpitts, a partner with Aquila Tours. “Our big season is in the weeks that lie ahead of us now.”

In Saint John alone, the cruise ship industry will bring over 176,000 passengers and almost 70,000 crew members to the city's shores this year.

Many of those visitors will be coming in September and October.

It's a similar story across the Maritimes.

Saint John is expected to see 53 ships in September and October, while Charlottetown will see 55. Sydney will see a total of 63 vessels in the next two months and Halifax will welcome 128 cruise ships in the next eight weeks.

“The ships tend to try to get out of the Caribbean in the fall, get away from the hurricane season, maybe come up to a little cooler temperatures. It's a very busy time of year,” said Betty MacMillan, cruise development manager for the Port of Saint John.

For Halifax, it's a record breaking year.

In 2017, the city welcomed more than 290,000 passengers.

This year, Halifax is anticipating more than 300,000, with 27 more ships arriving this year over last.

Holland America's Veendam brought some 1,300 extra visitors to Sydney Tuesday.

Cape Breton's autumn attractions like the Celtic Colours Festival are given a boost from the five dozen ships Sydney will see in the coming weeks.

In southern New Brunswick, the economic spinoffs for this year's visitors expected to be in the $50 million range.

Gaming on the go has never been easier with the GS63VR

With notebooks catching up in performance with their desktop counterparts, maybe LAN parties can be a thing again and the MSI GS63VR 6RF is definitely heading in the right direction. Sporting an Intel Core i7 processor and a desktop equivalent GTX 1060, you’ll have enough firepower to play the latest games anywhere you want. At only 1.81kg, it isn’t even a hassle to carry around in your backpack or messenger bag, considering it’s a 15.6-inch notebook. Before we forget, the GS63VR uses a 256GB SSD for quick startup and speedy load times, plus a 1TB HDD for storing your favourite movies or anime’s. We brought the GS63VR around with us to hang out with our friends and even use it as a work notebook, without feeling encumbered by it. We tested the GS63VR on games like Dying Light, Left 4 Dead 2, StarCraft 2, Overwatch and League of Legends, all of which played flawlessly on the GS63VR. The notebook was also relatively silent, only getting loud during games like Battlefield 1, but can still be considered on the quieter side. A small issue we had was the palm rest being warm on the right side, which is probably where the graphics card is installed, people who use the WASD probably won’t even notice, but if you’re a left handed gamer you might feel the heat.

Leaving that aside, the heat dissipation is great on the GS63VR. You can even see the Cooler Boost Trinity fans from the bottom of the notebook. The RGB keyboard is also amazing, the keys have a nice tactile feedback and is quite nice to type on. Build quality of the notebook is great as well, it feels solid even with its light weight should be able to take a bit of a beating.

Gracias a MSI Iberia tenemos una de sus propuestas en portátiles gaming más interesantes. Se trata del nuevo MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro, un portátil de 15,6″ con panel Ultra HD 4K pero de tamaño, líneas y peso (1,8Kg) muy reducidos que no deja de lado las últimas tecnologías como pueda ser un procesadore Intel Core i7 7700HQ, 16GB de RAM, una gráfica NVIDIA GTX 1060 de 6GB, un SSD M.2 NVME de altísimas prestaciones contando además con un HDD tradicional de 2TB y 7200rpm para almacenamiento.

Sin duda estamos ante un equipo que gustará a todos aquellos donde la movilidad sea un punto importante pero que no quieran dejar de lado una máquina lo suficientemente potente para ofrecer un gaming e incluso un desempeño general de altas prestaciones. Además las pequeñas dimensiones con las que cuenta el equipo (380 x 249 x 17.7mm) no le impiden tener una generosa batería de 65Whr, algo que podremos ver al desmontarlo.

Aprovechando la ocasión, por partida doble, que nos ha brindado MSI hemos aprovechado para comparar esta unidad contra el MSI GE62VR CAMO SQUAD aprovechando que cuenta igualmente con un Intel Core i7 7700HQ y la misma Nvidia GeForce GTX1060, pero de 3Gb de VRAM.  Antes de nada veamos las especificaciones oficiales del fabricante.

    Nada más recibir la unidad lo primero que nos encontramos es con su caja de diseño minimalista donde cumple sobradamente con lo de “menos es más” y es que resulta un embalaje simple y muy llamativo donde luce el logo de MSI en todo su esplendor.

      La parte trasera de la misma tenemos una pegatina con la información de las especificaciones del portátil. En este caso nos identifica que estamos ante un MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro, con una pantalla de 15,6″ Ultra HD 4K, una CPU Intel Core i7 7700HQ Kaby Lake acompañado de una Nvidia GeForce GTX1060 de 6GB como GPU junto con 16 GB de RAM DDR4 y una solución de almacenamiento basada en un SSD M.2 de 512GB y 2TB de HDD tradicional.

  Al abrir la caja nos encontramos con 2 niveles independientes. En superior encontraremos el portátil doblemente cubierto por una bolsa protectora y luego por su propia funda con el logotipo de MSI. En la parte inferior de la misma podemos encontrar toda la documentación y el DVD de drivers así como en su parte derecha, completamente indpendiente, encontramos su fuente de alimentación.

    Como no podía ser menos por parte de MSI el nuevo MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro cuenta con un transformador de Delta Electronics de 180W por lo que en lo que la alimentación se refiere nos encontramos con una solución de unos de los mejores y más premiados fabricantes.

    Una vez retirada la bolsa protectora y la funda del portátil nos encontramos con el MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro en todo su esplendor. Como podéis ver en la imagen se trata de una unidad extremadamente fina, con un acabado en metal cepillado y el característico diseño en rojos y negros de la serie gaming del fabricante.

En los laterales se puede seguir observando la delgadez del equipo. Además, concretamente en el lateral izquierdo, encontramos la toma RJ45 proveniente de la tarjeta de red Killer, 3x USB 3.0, el lector de tarjetas SD (XD/HC), las conexiones de audio del equipo 1x Mic-in y 1x Headphone-out (HiFi / SPDIF) y una de las salidas de aire con las que cuenta esta unidad. En el lateral derecho podemos encontrar otra salida de aire adicional, sumando 4 disponibles con las 2 traseras que veremos justo después, además de presentar otro USB 2.0, el puerto ThunderBolt 3, 1x HDMI 2.0b, 1x DisplayPort 1.4 y la toma de corriente. Como podéis ver MSI sigue apostando por dejar USB disponibles en todas las caras disponibles para la organización de periféricos externos.

    En la parte trasera pordemos encontrar el logotipo Stealth que identifica a la serie delgada y ligera de altas prestaciones del fabricante y aunque debido a su delgadez se pueden observar poco, también, en la parte inferior, podemos observar las 2 salidas de aire.

    Una vez abierto es cuando este MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro muestra todo el desempeño que MSI tiene en esta gama. Podemos observar su brillante y colorida pantalla de 15,6″, su teclado SteelSeries con iluminación LED RGB, su generoso touchpad de grandes dimensiones además de los leds de notificaciones en el fino marco frontal, en su lado derecho.

        Como hemos mencionado antes el pequeño tamaño de este nuevo MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro no le evita compartir muchos de los valores añadidos que MSI incoporpora en todos sus equipos, y especialmente en los portátiles gaming. Uno de los detalles más destacables es su teclado SteelSeries de corto recorrido que ayudan a una precisión perfecta a la hora de jugar y rapidez a la hora de escribir.

      En la parte inferior del portátil encontramos perforadas las zonas de entrada de aire para los disipadores, teniendo sentido el apoyo de unidades de refrigeración externas dado a que la unidad viene preparadas para ellas. Se dejan asomar 3 ventiladores al darle la vuelta, y es que el fabricante utiliza una sólución de triple blower para dejar la disipación más eficiente posible dentro de este mínimo espacio.

    Una vez levantada la carcasa inferior podemos observar como MSI ha podido incluir todas estas características en un espacio tan limitado. Lo primero que llama la atención a parte de la disipación, de la que hablaremos más adelante, es su generosa batería de 3 celdas y 65WHr que es capaz de aguantar hasta 2:30h bajo carga. La unidad de almacenamiento tradicional la encontramos en la parte inferior izquierda siendo fácilmente intercambiable mientras que la memoria RAM, CPU, GPU las encontramos en la otra cara del PCB para maximizar el espacio.

    La disipación, que se encuentra en la otra cara del PCB, cuenta con el diseño de triple blower Cooler Boost Trinity, que ya habíamos mencionado. Cada ventilador cuenta con 41 aspas en cada uno con un grosor de 0’4mm. Está conformado por 5 heatpipes que transmiten el calor de la CPU y la GPU para ser disipada por los ventiladores que recogen el propio aire limpio del inferior perforado que vimos anteriormente. Como se puede ver MSI es consciente de que un equipo gaming suele estar acompañado de generosas temperaturas así que ha maximizado el esfuerzo para que en tan poco espacio el equipo no presente ningún tipo de problema en máxima carga.

        También se puede observar como la alimentación corre a cuenta de condensadores Hi-C Caps de altas prestaciones y durabilidad en este MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro.

      Ya como parte final podemos encontrar que esta unidad que hemos recibido cuenta con un disco duro en la bahía de 2,5″ de 2TB y 7200rpmm del premiado recientemente por su durabilidad y bajísima tasa de fallos HGST, sin duda un buen acompañante al SSD de 512GB, y que cuenta con una alta tasa de transferencia en lectura y escritura para ser un HDD tradicional.

    BENCHMARKS – MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro

  La unidad La unidad MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro que hemos recibido cuenta con un Intel Core i7 7700HQ con un frecuencia base/turbo de 2’8/3’8GHz y 6MB de cache l3 junto con 16GB de RAM DDR4 2400MHz en dual-channel. En el almacenamiento cuenta con una unidad Samsung SSD M.2 de 512GB y una unidad mecánica de 2TB de 7200rpmm HDD de HGST cuyo rendimiento podréis ver en CrystalMark más adelante. En cuanto a las temperaturas que hemos podido controlar por parte de la CPU han sido de aproximadamente 40º en IDLE y 88º en carga máxima bajo stress. Os dejamos con los detalles del CPU-Z:

      En la solución gráfica contamos con una NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 con 1280 Shaders, 48 ROPs, 80 TMUs y 6GB GDDR5@8GHz. Las frecuencias de la misma parten desde los 1405MHz de base hasta los 1671MHz in-game aunque a nosotros nos ha ofrecido frecuencias de hasta 1720-1750MHz. En cuanto a temperaturas se han alcanzado en la GPU han sido máximas de alrededor de 78º. Os dejamos con los detalles de GPU-Z:

      En las pruebas de CPU, como comentamos al principio de la review, hemos comparado la unidad MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro contra el MSI GE62VR CAMO SQUAD donde podréis ver que la CPU a pesar de contar con un espacio muy limitado sigue ofreciendo un rendimiento prácticamente calcado.     Software – MSI Dragon Center

  Esta unidad, como todas las presentadas por MSI, cuenta con el Software Dargon Center. Este software es como el corazón de la unidad pues podremos actualizar todos los driver y el software del equipo, configurar el teclado, la pantalla, el sonido y las opciones de nahimic 2 e inclusive realizar overclocks y controlar la velocidad de la ventilación. Sin duda otro gran aporte de valor añadido que muestra la implicación del fabricante con sus portátiles.

Sin lugar a dudas estamos ante una de las unidades más interesantes, ya no sólo del fabricante, sino del sector gaming en portátiles en general. Este MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro no sólo nos ofrece una solución de 15,6″ y resolución 4K altamente transportable debido a sus pequeñas dimensiones y sus ridiculos 1,8Kg de peso, sino que lo hace ofreciendo todas las tecnologías que cabrían esperar dentro de un equipo gaming. La verdad es que impresiona que el fabricante haya sido capaz de incluir un Intel Core i7 de 4 núcleos y 8 hilos junto con una GTX 1060 de 6GB sin olvidar el SSD M.2 NVMe y el HDD de 2TB con 7200rpm.

Como podréis imaginar un equipo con esas prestaciones ofrece un rendimiento de escritorio simplemente perfecto con su SSD de 3300 MB/s de lectura. En el terreno gaming utilizar el panel 4K con una sola GTX 1060, como podéis imaginar, no es suficiente para un resultado óptimo pero en 1080p gracias es realmente bueno y con un escalado simplemente perfecto en el panel. Esto nos brinda la oportunidad de jugar muy fluidamente a 1080p y disfrutar contenido multimedia 4K sin problemao incluso arriesgarnos al gaming 4K jugando con las opciones o en juegos menos exigentes.

Si a todo lo anterior le sumamos un buen diseño, primeras calidades en el material eléctrico y disipación más que digna para el tamaño que estamos hablando, nos nos queda más remedio que galardonar al nuevo MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro con nuestro galardón OCKD Platnio, porque estamos sin lugar a dudas ante una de las mejores soluciones en portátiles que podemos encontrar en todo el mercado en un equilibrio perfecto entre tamaño/rendimiento/prestaciones.

    Review / Análisis – MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro Gracias a MSI Iberia tenemos una de sus propuestas en portátiles gaming más interesantes.
