How do I get my friend to read rad leaning material without scaring her away? I’m 18, a lesbian, and she’s my only lesbian friend. I love her very much and want her to be happy with herself as a lesbian and young woman. Radfem content helped me when I was sexually assaulted and realize that being a woman isn’t a horrible curse. She feels estranged from womanhood and has grown to resent other women because of her experience with being bullied by them. In high school, she would be pushed out of the locker room by the straight girls bc they thought she would “perv out” on them. She’s lost friends when she came out, her mother is also very homophobic and has called her a dyke more than once and makes fun of her for not being as girly. She’s also very hateful towards her body because she thinks having a bigger chest makes her look sloppy, slutty, and saggy and has hinted at “chopping them off”. I remember feeling hateful towards by downstairs area because porn made me feel like my vagina was ugly because my labia wasn’t bleached pink and tiny. So I think rad leaning content would help, but she’s been reading more trans content which I think would harm her if she ever decided to chop her boobs off instead of learning that they don’t make her sloppy and that there’s nothing wrong with having breast that aren’t perky like in porn.
i was putting off answering this because to be honest, i'm still struggling to get my best friend to see the value of being a womon (and breaking up with her shitty bf), and i didn't want to give you bad advice, but i guess something is better than nothing
i'm not going to lie. my work with my friend has been less "here's this book to read" and more "why do you think you're feeling that way?" and "is this something you believe or is it something you feel people want you to believe?" the thing i think helped her the most was me creating a space where she can be away from men and can speak her mind without being afraid of being judged. also incredibly important was helping her start the healing process between her and her mom, but that isn't feasible with every womon obviously
she had absolutely no idea of any feminist history (and she and i are both usamericans), so before i recommended any books to her, i recommended her "Mrs. America," which is a single season show following the fight to ratify the ERA in the 70s. it features fictionalized versions of womyn like Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisolm, Gloria Steinem, and Phyllis Schlafly (renowned anti-feminist, but whoever wrote the show at least understood the gist of Right Wing Women). this helped her (a) realize how important the rights of womyn are and how easily they're taken away and (b) that (second-wave/radical) feminists weren't just a group a man-hating racist white ladies like everyone online claims
it wasn't until after all that that i recommended her the book Dietland by Sarai Walker. it's fictional, but in my opinion, it offers a great beginning into radfem ideology. it follows a fat womon who's waiting to live her life until she's skinny as a sort of coming-into-her-own story, but then it takes a turn into some wild (but very much connected) areas including:
womyn's separatism
exploring same-sex attraction
anti-porn activism
an anti-beauty book called "Fuckability Theory"
and a feminist terrorist group
she actually just borrowed my copy of Anita Diamant's The Red Tent (also fiction), which is a feminist retelling of Dinah, a character from biblical canon. i actually don't remember the book that well (only read it once) but i really enjoyed it, and i actually think that book made me want to go to womyn's land badly enough to actually go
one of the biggest books that helped me personally was Soraya Chemaly's Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger (i read that alongside Brittany Cooper's Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower which is more of a memoir, so i'd recommend Rage Becomes Her first). these were basically the first two rad-leaning (although Eloquent Rage isn't necessarily radical feminist) books i read and they lit a fire under me. they both helped me realize how much negative energy i was directing toward myself and helped me gain back my ability to speak up and be unafraid
Audre Lorde, imo, is essential lesbian reading, so i'd recommend Sister Outsider, as well. it's a collection of essays, so it's a great start into her works and worldview
i think Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie is also a good starting point (if she hasn't been indoctrinated to be afraid of her), but i've only read We Should All Be Feminists and Dear Ijeawele (A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions)
i had a moment of courage and sent my friend a request on goodreads, and now whenever i'm reading a radfem text, she usually asks me about it and will sometimes add it to her reading list
i've definitely been where your friend has been, and i'm sorry to hear she's dealing with so much pressure... i think even more important than the books is for you to continue to support her and be there for her and listen to her, everything she says. help her stop apologizing, help her take up space, help her find her voice. make sure she knows that her unique experience/perspective matters. but also, don't be afraid to disagree with her. it may take being challenged for her to realize what she really believes

Women have to deal with men. Women may not escape men. ALSO women have to be around other women...at times... But my main argument is how does feminism exist? if one ... still has to answer to men... the military... and abuse issued by men? from men? FROM WOMEN TOO? ...um hello yes there's a very big... league... or band of brothers.. MEN... that own money... society... careers... sex...etc. And when is the last time a fellow woman even helped you? ... My point is... I don't believe in any of this... not the english western teachings.. because some of it is pure wishful thinking... There's no such thing..as a woman making money without cooperation from a man... There is no such thing as a truly independent woman. Try to do it yourself... one (a woman in this case).. has to cooperate with men.. There's no way around it. My point is.. no country/gov. exists without men... and having to appease them. End of discussion. Gloria Steinem...Beyonce...lyrics...do not make sense. They are both liars. They head fuck people. It's not good to be on someone's dime... it's also not good to struggle endlessly surviving on one's own..matters now how rich one is... it's the social emergency.. it's the fact.. people do not meet their type usually often enough. The english west has many UNFORGIVABLE faults. My point is .. don't lie to me... next time...don't waste my money and my time..saying feminism is real.-kelley

Hazno Horriblis: Car chase farce legal woes money trouble
Hazno Horriblis: Car chase farce, legal woes, money trouble https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXewC-cwsVQThis video was posted by Dan Wootton two weeks ago in reaction to the car chase farce, with some entertaining commentary from Tom Bower. I think it is interesting to look at what Tom predicted would happen in court. Here is the synopsis:Upon cross-examination, "Andrew Green... is going to give [Hazno] a pasting like he's never had before."There is a "crumbling of the magic and mystery of [H], the whole beginning really of the end of his reputation... he is sort of a cliche of a ghost or something quite unpleasant. And that hysterical outburst in New York just showed really how the man has become somewhat unbalanced."The award was "tawdry"; Its only purpose was to "up the glory of" TW and "make Gloria Steinem - an ancient relic - quite self-important as well." Glo is supposedly annoyed that the alleged car chase deflected from Ms. awards.Backgrid are the same agency TW cooperated with for the hiking shot on Coronation Day.The couple didn't go to the Carlyle because the property "not only wouldn't give them a good deal, but was quite keen for them not to come anymore... Wherever they go, they cast a bad shadow."They're not invited to Hollywood parties because "they just bring with them the danger of the whole thing being about them."TW, like with the Spare promotion, "stays silent. She is using [H] to fight her battles... She clearly is building up to something quite big."H. has lost glamour and credibility leading up to cross-examination in the Mirror case. The judge will say the case is "against the Daily Mirror, not against Buckingham Palace." There is no evidence against the Mirror in the past few weeks from H's "smarmy" lawyer.5th year wedding anniversary seems "incredibly unhappy" (Dan), but Tom is skeptical of a rented hotel room. Believes H. goes to the Olive Garden cottage "quite often to smoke his w**d.""The reality is closing in" on Hazno. He was relieved to be in California at first, but there's supposedly no new Netflix contract, Spotify series or book. "Where is the money going to come from?"Perhaps TW is starting to check out. Stories of the alleged car chase started coming out May 17 and were not followed by lovey dovey tripe of the 5th anniversary (May 19) but instead a story of H's rented room (May 20) leaked to TW-friendly outlet. The sentiment of the story is H. allegedly abandoning his family. H. denies the story but the call may be coming from inside the house. Reality closing in, indeed. 15 September 2022: The Kering Foundation hosted its inaugural Caring for Women dinner in New York. The event, which took place at The Pool.
The event was hosted by Anderson Cooper, who took on the role of MC, and co-chairs in addition to the Pinaults included Gisele Bündchen, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson, artist Julie Mehretu, Queen Rania of Jordan and Gloria Steinem.
The evening benefited several organizations partnered with the Foundation, including the Ms. Foundation for Women, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Global Fund for Women and Jordan River Foundation.
“When Salma called me about this event my first thought was, ‘how timely,’” said Jordan River Foundation founder Queen Rania, addressing the dinner crowd. “Crises are not gender-neutral. Today, we live in a world where seismic disruptions have become the norm. From pandemics to climate change, to mass migration, to conflict and shifting geopolitics. And women and girls are always the first to feel the ground shift under their feet. They are the first to suffer and the last to recover, their agony underground and in the shadows.” (Source: WWD)

Emma Watson cut a glamorous figure as she stepped out at the Kering Foundation's Caring for Women dinner in New York on Thursday.
The actress, 32, looked elegant in a sheer white gown embellished with intricate floral lace detailing as she posed for pictures at The Pool on Park Avenue.
She gave a flash of her incredible figure through the dress' cut-out back design, while a lace train billowed out behind her.
Emma added a few extra inches to her frame with a pair of chunky black sandals and kept her essentials in a silver studded clutch bag.
She let her gorgeous outfit do all the talking as she kept her accessories simple with a pair of silver droplet earrings.
The Beauty and the Beast star slicked her brunette tresses back into a tight up-do and let her natural good looks shine through with a light dusting of make-up.
The dinner, hosted by Anderson Cooper, is raising funds for firms that support those affected by gender-based violence.
All proceeds from the event will go to The Kering Foundations partner organisations - the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Ms. Foundation For Women and Global Fund For Women.
Emma led the stars at the event, which was co-chaired by the likes of Salma Hayek, Samuel L Jackson, Gisele Bündchen and Gloria Steinem.
----
An event hosted by Kering that's raising funds for women? I would've been surprised if Emma hadn't attended lol. She looks very pretty. The dress is lovely and looks great on her. I would've loved it more if it hadn't been white.

Personalities and narratives projected onto the screen of our imaginations are far more haunting—and far more likely to be the stuff of conspiracies and conjecture—if they have not been allowed to play themselves out to their logical or illogical ends. James Dean’s brief life is the subject of a cult, but the completed lives of such similar “outsiders” as Gary Cooper or Henry Fonda are not. Each day in the brief Camelot of John Kennedy inspires as much speculation as each year in the long New Deal of Franklin Roosevelt. The few years of Charlie “Bird” Parker’s music inspire graffiti (“Bird Lives”), but the many musical years of Duke Ellington do not. When the past dies, there is mourning, but when the future dies our imaginations are compelled to carry it on.
Would Marilyn Monroe have become the serious actress she aspired to be? Could she have survived the transition from sex goddess to mortal woman that aging would impose? Could she have stopped her disastrous marriages to men whose images she wanted to absorb (Beloved American DiMaggio, Serious Intellectual Miller), and found a partner who loved and understood her as she really was? Could she have kicked her life-wasting habits of addiction and procrastination? Would she have had or adopted children? Found support in the growing strength of women or been threatened by it? Entered the world of learning or continued to be ridiculed for trying? Survived and even enjoyed the age of sixty she now would be? Most important, could she finally have escaped her lifetime combination of two parts talent, one part victim, and one part joke? Would she have been “taken seriously,” as she so badly wanted to be? We will never know.
Every question is as haunting as any of its possible answers.

Lela Rochon
Tumblr media
Lela Rochon Staples (born April 17, 1964), known professionally as Lela Rochon, is an American actress, best known for her starring role as Robin Stokes in the 1995 romantic drama film Waiting to Exhale. She also had notable roles in films Harlem Nights (1989), Boomerang (1992), The Chamber (1996), Gang Related (1997), Knock Off (1998), Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998), and Any Given Sunday (1999).
Early life
Rochon was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Zelma, a nurse practitioner, and Samuel Staples, a business owner and graphic artist. She graduated from Cerritos High School in Cerritos, California in 1982. After high school, Rochon attended California State University, Dominguez Hills where she earned a BA in Broadcast Journalism, with minors in Sociology and Theatre. In 2016, Rochon returned to give the commencement speech at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Career
Early works
In 1984, Rochon appeared as an extra in the movie Breakin’, where she met the man who would later become her husband. From 1986 to 1988, while attending college, Rochon was one of the "Spudettes" featured in over 30 national spots for the Spuds MacKenzie Budweiser/Bud Light TV commercials. She also appeared in the 1985 made-for-television film A Bunny's Tale starring Kirstie Alley and Delta Burke, based on Gloria Steinem's experiences as a Playboy Bunny. She appeared as the love interest of Gerald Levert in the video for "My Forever Love" by Levert, and in Luther Vandross' "It's Over Now" video. She also appeared in the music video for Lionel Richie's single "All Night Long (All Night)", in Al B. Sure's video for the song "Natalie", and in Tupac Shakur's video "I Get Around" as one of the female dancers. She had many guest starring roles in a number of sitcoms, include The Cosby Show, Amen, 227, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. Rochon made her film debut in 1985, when she starred opposite Fred Williamson in Fox Trap. In 1987, she played the role of Debby in the film The Wild Pair, starring Beau Bridges and Bubba Smith. In 1996, Rochon starred opposite Timothy Hutton in the Showtime cable network film Mr. and Mrs. Loving, receiving a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Actress. Later that year, she played the female lead in the crime thriller film The Chamber. The following year, she starred alongside Jim Belushi and Tupac Shakur in the crime thriller Gang Related. In 1998, Rochon had the leading role alongside Halle Berry and Vivica A. Fox in the romantic drama Why Do Fools Fall in Love, and well starred in Knock Off with Jean-Claude Van Damme, and The Big Hit, as love interest to Mark Wahlberg's leading character. In 1999, she appeared in Any Given Sunday directed by Oliver Stone. In 2001, Rochon made her return to television with one of leading roles alongside Bonnie Bedelia, Nancy McKeon, Tracey Needham, and Lisa Vidal in the Lifetime crime drama series, The Division. Oscar nominees such as Glenn Close, Viggo Mortensen, Ethan Hawke, and Benedict Cumberbatch will appear alongside newcomers at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, according to the lineup of 118 feature films announced Wednesday.
The Utah-based festival will kick off Jan. 23 with several day-one films, including music documentary “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana,” and run through Sunday, Feb. 2.
Director Julie Taymor’s starry Gloria Steinem biopic, “The Glorias,” alone features Alicia Vikander, Julianne Moore, and Janelle Monáe. Another high-profile premiere, “The Father,” co-stars Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, while Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo topline former Pixar director Brenda Chapman’s live-action debut, “Come Away.”
“We have lots of returning alumni this year, which really says a lot about the community that we create,” said festival director John Cooper, pointing to such examples as Miranda July (“Kajillionaire”), Dee Rees (“The Last Thing He Wanted”), Benh Zeitlin (“Wendy”), and Sean Durkin (“The Nest”). Among the first-timers making their feature debuts at this year’s festival, Cooper explained, “We’re seeing a lot more of how they tell a story, even if it’s an old story, with a lot more creativity.”
Taylor Swift: Miss Americana (Director: Lana Wilson, Producers: Morgan Neville, Caitrin Rogers, Christine O’Malley) — A raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time during a transformational period in her life as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice.
