If only the story could always keep up with great book covers ...
But who is the greatest femme fatale of them all? Is it Phyllis Dietrichson? Dianne Tremayne Jessup? Or Kathie (Out of the Past)? Or one of the heroines of Charles Williams' "The Hot Spot" or "A Touch of Death"?

London, 29th December 1940, 8 pm. The London Blitz reached its nadir with the bombing of the City of London and the area around its most beloved landmark, St. Paul’s Cathedral. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes meet as the flames blaze and roar all around them. But who is that dark-haired young man and why is he risking his life in such a careless manner? This is what Doctor Watson is wondering, as he eventually becomes enmeshed in a mystery that will take him away from his dreary, hopeless life and plunge him into the secret life of wartime London.
The characters belong to ACD and the BBC. The story is mine, so please do not post anywhere else without express permission.
“But now, since the silence will not rise and surround us, Leaving us wondering about ourselves, looking each to the other, Sketching the gesture that will finish with consummation, We shall not know what meaning was held by that dream.” Memorial for 1940 – John Gould Fletcher

Rec: Another magnificent and intricate story from an author who surely by now is established as a master of historical AU’s. From blackout curtains and Black Cats to Glenn Miller and the Savoy Turkish Baths, it’s astonishing how effortless the immersion happens in the era’s language, technology, social structure, fashions, entertainment, and ethics. The prose itself is a dream to read, each word perfectly chosen and placed and contributing to an overall sense of both luxury and economy in the writing.
The main plot is intrinsically set in the early years of WWII and is an intricate web of political and personal intrigues peppered with double agents, inscrutable motives, blind alleys, and the ominous foreboding of 21st-century hindsight. There are quite a few characters and subplots to keep track of as events unfold in a fast-paced and thrilling manner, but as the momentum builds and the threads start to come together, the payoff arrives in ah-ha moments and admiration at the perfection of the planning.
On the personal side, Sherlock in this is a bratty, cynical ingénu who believes himself invincible, while John is a practical, hard-headed firebrand looking for a cause. Far from the steamy clash one might expect, instead they temper and tame each other, and their immediate and enduring passion for one another is tender and profound.
This is really a top-notch story on all counts, and one that is sure to stick with you for a while.
