My Garden Flowers Part 3
All photos mine. The small buttercup and evening primrose are edited for colour since the camera didn't catch it and washed it out.
In order of appearance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order of appearance:
061. Wild Basil (Clinopodium vulgare) Didn't do so well the last place I had her in, but she seems happy in this spot, so fingers crossed.
062. Crested Iris (Iris cristata) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
063. Smallflower Buttercup (Rancunculus abortivus) Not much to look at compared with other buttercups but one of the only native buttercups with (limited) edible uses.
064. Smooth Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum biflorum) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet. Soon, hopefully!
065. False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosa) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet, but she's growing well so hopefully next year.
066. Blisterwort (Ranunculus recurvatus) I didn't plant that. She just turned up last year. Not pictured as I haven't got any pictures yet.
067. Fairy Spuds (Claytonia virginica) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet. She's a wee little spud in the ground.
068. Flowering Dogwood (Cornus floridus) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet but she is slowly spreading out.
069. Plantain-Leaf Sedge (Carex plantaginea) Not pictured as I haven't got pictures yet. I should. It's a neat plant. Evergreen, too!
070. Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) One of the prettiest plants I've ever seen, from the shape and texture of the leaves to the purplish pink buds to the bright blue bell-shaped flowers. They're spring ephemerals, though, so they're long gone by now. But will emerge next spring!
071. Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) Only lives for two years and reseeds itself. It's a common weed along sidewalks, but its flowers glow yellow in the evening and often remain in bloom at night.
072. Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet. The leaves are really cute, though.
073. Large Toothwort (Cardamine maxima) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
074. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Not pictured as I haven't got any pictures yet.
075. Great Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis) A cultivar, not sure which one. I'll get the wild type if/when I can.
076. American Plum (Prunus americana) I was not expecting her to flower this year! Hopefully she will next year too, and without aphids this time so I can have some plums. :)
077. Smooth Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve) So like I said, I do think New England asters are the prettiest of this genus, but smooth asters are very nice in their own way. Tender bluish leaves, and delicate light purple flowers.
078. Sweet Grass (Hierochloe odorata) Not pictured as I haven't got any pictures yet. She only flowered one year. Hasn't since. I won't miss a photo next time.
079. Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum) What's better than pretty flowers? Tasty pretty flowers!
080-081. Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) Two different cultivars and the red one has died, but I did get my hands on the wild type! That will hopefully bloom this year.
082. Stiff Sunflower (Helianthus pauciflorus subrhomboideus) Holds her own against the much more aggressive Nuttall's sunflower. Sometimes called beautiful sunflower. I don't know how one decides which species of a very showy genus gets that name, but I guess she won out.
083. Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) Another one that was hard to choose a photo of. You just hardly believe they're real!
084. Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris) I planted her where there's a drip from the eavestrough so she can get very wet when it rains. :) She is not a marigold but instead part of the buttercup family.
085. Nuttall's Sunflower (Helianthus nuttallii) Whenever I am expressing frustration about sunflowers, it is almost always this species. lol Very beautiful but very aggressive.
086. Larkspur Violet (Viola pedatifida) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
087. White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
088. Small Sundrops (Oenothera perennis) Not quite as intensely yellow as some of her relatives but still very bright.
089. Bigleaf Aster (Eurybia macrophylla) You generally grow her for foliage rather than her flowers, but flowering she is! Very drought-tolerant, but spreads more readily in less harsh conditions.
090. Bride's Feathers (Aruncus dioicus) Southern Ontario and surrounding area's evolution really went off on the lacy white flowers, and this species' flowers might be the laciest of them all.

------------
In the Tang Dynasty, chrysanthemums had not yet cultivated complex varieties. White, yellow, pink-purple daisies may be common chrysanthemums in the Tang Dynasty.
Worship ancestors and gods, watching chrysanthemums, and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant Cornus officinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.),eat Double Ninth Cake, hold a banquet, climb mountains and pray for luck, these are the customs of the Double Ninth Festival in ancient times.

happy gushiwensday saturday, here's Du Mu with -- some kind of festive mood! we interpreted him quite differently on what that mood is!
Climbing the heights at Qishan on Double Ninth
Du Mu
the fall, captured in the river waters. the geese have started to leave. my guest and I carry our jars up the green depths of the mountain.
wretched world, the lucky few get to reunite -- laughing openmouthed decorate each other with dogwood sprigs -- and don't come home until your hair's full of flowers!
drunk as a lord -- that's what the holiday calls for don't need some famous landscape. the radiance of a sunset can move you even here.
but it's always been thus. why should the mere thought of Ox Mountain dot my robes with tears?
九日齐山登高
杜牧
江涵秋影雁初飞,与客携壶上翠微。 尘世难逢开口笑,菊花须插满头归。 但将酩酊酬佳节,不用登临恨落晖。 古往今来只如此,牛山何必独霑衣。
Notes:
the Double Ninth festival: "It is customary to climb a mountain,[8][9] drink chrysanthemum liquor,[8][9] and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant Cornus officinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.)" (Wikipedia)
green depths: 翠微 (lit. "jade" "profound") is a poetic term for mountains.
dogwood sprigs: 山茱萸 (shanzhuyu, a type of dogwood) is traditionally used as a festive accessory on Double Ninth. Based on my approximate understanding of traditional festivals, you break off little flowering twigs and stick them in your hair, or sometimes clothes.
Ox Mountain: 牛山 Niushan is a real mountain in Shandong, but it's also a literary reference from the Spring and Autumn Annals about the futility of a mortal lifespan (according to gushiwen's annotations).

Horticulturae, Vol. 10, Pages 651: Integrated Metabolomic and Transcriptomic Analyses Reveal the Regulatory Mechanism Underlying the Accumulation of Anthocyanins in Cornus officinalis pericarp
The mature flesh of Cornus officinalis exhibits a vibrant red color, attributed to its rich anthocyanin content, imparting significant edible and medicinal value. Vibrant colors not only enhance the visual allure of medicinal materials but also maintain a close association with their intrinsic quality. However, the intricate process of pigment formation governing the anthocyanin accumulation in the pericarp of Cornus officinalis remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted the comprehensive sampling and analysis of pericarp tissues at three distinct developmental stages, employing morphological-structure observation and metabolomic and transcriptomic techniques. Our findings reveal a substantial increase in the anthocyanin accumulation during the transition to the red stage of Cornus officinalis fruit maturation. Metabolomic profiling identified the highest expression levels of Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and Pelargonidin-3-O-rutinoside during the mature stage, suggesting their association with the red coloration of the fruit. Through #RNA sequencing, we identified 25,740 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 41 DEGs associated with anthocyanin biosynthesis. The correlation between the DEG expression levels and anthocyanin content was explored, further elucidating the regulatory network. Additionally, we validated the pivotal role of the candidate gene BZ1 in the synthesis of Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside through qRT-PCR, confirming its crucial impact on anthocyanin accumulation. This study provides preliminary insights into anthocyanin accumulation in Cornus officinalis, laying the foundation for the future development of new cultivars with enhanced anthocyanin contents. https://www.mdpi.com/2311-7524/10/6/651?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Review of Missha’s CHOGONGJIN GEUMSUL Jin Mask
Missha is a well-known and popular Korean brand, they produce skincare and makeup and are well-known for their high-quality BB creams. Their new CHOGONGJIN line is designed with the intent to embrace timeless natural ingredients and harness their restorative powers to heal and protect your skin. It has three types of masks including this one, Geumsul (royal honey jelly), Sosaeng (red ginseng; review), and Youngan (black ginseng; review). Each mask is made with a Gongjin blend of ingredients which includes thyme, cornelian cherry, and female ginseng. This mask is designed as a highly nutritious mask drenched in the Gongjin complex. It's meant to perfectly hug your face contours to nourish and revitalize skin. Key ingredients include (of course): thyme extract (antifungal, antiseptic, fortifies skin, helps to keep dry skin from feeling tight and itchy), cornelian cherry extract (antioxidant-rich, vitamin-rich, treats skin damage and aging, enhances skin clarity, and radiance), Korean angelica extract (known as female ginseng, fights signs of UV damage and aging, detoxifying), royal jelly extract (nourishing, vitamin-rich, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, skin repairing, healing), niacinamide (whitening, lightening, anti-aging, rejuvenating, anti-wrinkle) and sodium hyaluronate (anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, hydrating, moisturizing, healing). This mask retails for between $4-6 USD, you can get 4 pieces here for $12.99 + shipping.
Ingredients
Water, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydroxyacetophenone, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Arginine, Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Angelica Gigas Extract, Cornus Officinalis Fruit Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, Velvet Extract, Adenosine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Codonopsis Lanceolata Root Extract, Royal Jelly Extract, Myristic Acid, Arachidic Acid, Lauric Acid
Tumblr media
This mask contains 30 grams (1.05 oz) and does have an herbal artificial fragrance. Also, due to it containing velvet extract, this product is not vegan.
Tumblr media
The sheet mask is a 3D air mesh fiber mask designed to fit well and have optimal adherence to the skin. The fit of the mask is really great and I had no real need to adjust it.
Recommended use is after washing your face, use a toner to prep the skin. Align the mask to your eyes, nose, and, mouth. Remove the mask after 10-20 minutes. Gently tap the skin to help the absorption of the remaining essence. This mask is not vegan and contains fragrance. After using, I haven't been this impressed with a Missha mask for quite some time, normally they are a little uncomfortable but this one is very nice quality and very comfortable. There is a very noticeable herbal type of fragrance which I feel is common in products like this. It's very ginseng-y smelling. This could definitely be irritating to the skin but I found it suitable for my sensitive skin and very gentle. There's lots of essence and the quality of the essence is very good and plumps, hydrates, and nourishes the skin. The ingredients are very enriching and apart from the fragrance there are no irritants. I'd recommend this to anyone with dry and aging skin, but it can be used on sensitive skin in my opinion, but always patch test first.
What I like: this mask is really nice quality and the material of the mask is fantastic, extremely soft, and adheres very well to the skin. The ingredients are fantastic and it's a very moisturizing and nourishing mask. What I don't like: I don't mind the scent, but unfortunately, this added artificial fragrance can be an irritant.
Pros:
Nourishing
Moisturizing
Hydrating
Soothing
Plumping
Wonderful mask material
No major irritants apart from the fragrance
Cons:
Fragrance
Not vegan friendly
Would I buy again?
Yes
Rating: 9/10

Cornus mas aurea variegata

#Cornus mas aurea variegata trial#
#Cornus mas aurea variegata trial#
Kingdon Ward’s introduction is certainly tender, but worthy of trial in the milder and moister parts of the country. The finest and best known specimen grows in the Temperate House at the Savill Gardens, where it has assumed the aspect of a tree of some tropical rain-forest, with leaves a foot long. However, seed of the Rima dogwood was collected and of the six plants raised, one survived and is the parent of those now in cultivation. A few days later the hillside on which he was camping was thrown into the river by the shock of the earthquake and he barely escaped with his life. Collecting near Rima, where the Tsangpo emerges from the Himalaya, his attention was caught by a dogwood that resembled Cornus mas but was ‘taller, with a smooth, palm-like stem and much larger mops, composed of more numerous flowers, of a luminous sulphur-yellow’. For the late Frank Kingdon Ward, this species always called to memory the great Assam earthquake of 1950. officinalis by the whitish-grey indumentum of the under-surface of the leaves and from both species by its longer, more tapered sepals and the black fruits. It is occasionally 30 ft high in Japan.Ĭ. mas, except that the habit is perhaps coarser. When in flower it is not distinguishable from C. It has also two additional (five to seven) pairs of veins to each leaf. It has the same yellow flowers and red fruits, but it differs in having in addition to the flat hairs attached by their centres, conspicuous patches of dense, rusty-coloured down beneath the leaves, in and near the vein-axils. mas a Japanese and Korean species, it is seldom seen in gardens. There are also forms with yellow, purplish and white fruits, but these are not of much interest in this country, where the tree is shy-fruiting.Ĭ. – Similar to ‘Aurea Elegantissima’, but with creamy-white variegation. nana, Carrière included under it two clones: one, making a small spherical bush, derived from a yellow-fruited form of the species the other, similar in habit, had stouter shoots clad with short hairs and tinged red, especially near the leaf insertions.Ĭv. when shown by Lee of Hammersmith in 1872 and probably originated with them.į. – Leaves prettily variegated, having a wide unequal border of yellow, some entirely yellow others tinged with pink. The following varieties are in cultivation:Ĭv. The fruit also used to be made into a rob (syrup) or preserve. It was formerly, if not now, much used on the continent for small articles in domestic use. The wood, although limited in quantity, has considerable value because of its tough, hard, durable nature. The fruit is handsome, but not, in my experience, freely borne. As it is without foliage when in bloom, it is a great advantage if it can be associated with some evergreen, such as holly. It is still one of the most valuable we have. Before the introduction of the Japanese witch hazels the Cornelian cherry was the most effective of yellow-flowering shrubs in bloom as early as February. Native of Europe, cultivated for centuries in Britain. wide, indented at the apex, of good acid flavour. Fruit a bright red, oblong drupe 5⁄ 8 in. across, enclosed before opening in four downy, boat-shaped bracts. diameter, yellow, produced in February and March on the leafless stems in short-stalked umbels from the joints of the previous year’s wood, each umbel about 3⁄ 4 in. wide (sometimes considerably larger on strong shoots) apex slender-pointed base tapered or rounded dark dull green, both surfaces furnished with centrally attached, flattened hairs veins in three to five pairs stalk 1⁄ 4 in. A deciduous shrub or small tree sometimes 45 ft high, of spreading, rather open habit young branchlets covered with minute, flattened, greyish hairs.

【重阳节・Double Ninth Festival( 2022 date4 October) 】
or call (Chong Yang Festival or Chung Yeung Festival)observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writings since before the Eastern Han period (before AD 25).
According to the I Ching, nine is a yang number; the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar (or double nine) has too much yang (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) and is thus a potentially very auspicious date. Hence, the day is also called "Double Yang Festival" (重陽節). It is customary to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum liquor, and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant, watch chrysanthemum,Cornus officinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.)
The sweet and delicious Double Ninth Cake is an essential food, and the little bunting on the Double Ninth Cake is the children's favorite.

Double Ninth Cake has written records in the Southern Dynasties.Rice flour, some nut materials, etc. are mostly used as raw materials for making Double Ninth Cake. The production method varies from place to place. There are mainly two kinds of baking and steaming. Five-color small colorful flags are inserted on the cake, stuffing and double sheep are printed. )", which is still popular today.
