Séance #11 - L'imprudence des parents sur le partage d'information sur les réseaux sociaux

Depuis l’émergence des réseaux sociaux, de nombreux parents étaient contents de pouvoir partager leurs nouvelles et leur joie d’avoir un enfant avec leur entourage éloigné via les réseaux sociaux. Cependant, les parents ne sont pas toujours au courant de l’ampleur des dangers associés au partage de photos et d’informations de leurs enfants. Aujourd’hui, avec l’augmentation de l’accessibilité de l’intelligence artificielle, il faut être plus prudent avec ce qui est publié sur nos réseaux sociaux puisque c’est permanent et n’importe qui peut y avoir accès.

Une vidéo nommé « Ce film choque doit être vu par TOUS les parents », rediffusée par Creapills, a été créée par Deutshe Telekom par l’agence adam&eveDDB pour montrer les conséquences de partager des informations d’enfants sur les réseaux sociaux. La vidéo montre un couple qui partage fréquemment des photos et vidéos du quotidien de leur fille Ella, qui a 9 ans. Avec une seule photo et l’intelligence artificielle, ils ont pu transformer la fillette en une version plus âgée pour s’adresser à ses parents pour les conscientiser sur les dangers du partage d’informations sur Internet. Après le visionnage de cette vidéo frappante, je trouve cela aberrant à quel point l’intelligence artificielle peut exploiter les informations mises sur les réseaux sociaux. Dans le cas de la vidéo, il suffit d’une photo pour l’exploiter comme la personne le veut. L’enfant n’a pas consenti à ce que ses informations personnelles se retrouvent dans la sphère numérique. Cette facilité, de manipuler les photos et les informations, est très dangereuse puisque, comme mentionné dans la vidéo, ces informations peuvent être utilisés à des fins d’arnaques, à des fins pervers comme la pornographie juvénile, à des fins de moqueries que l’enfant peut subir à cause de ses camarades, etc. De plus, je trouve cela frappant quand l’image digitale d’Ella mentionne pour ses parents : « Ce qu’ils publient sont des souvenirs, mais pour d’autres, ce sont des données à exploiter ». Tout ce qu’on fait sur Internet laisse une trace et permet de formuler une image presque complète de l’individu qui les utilise.

Bref, je trouve cette vidéo très importante à visionner pour tout le monde puisque nous ne sommes pas très bien informés quant à l’utilisation des réseaux sociaux. De plus, il devrait y avoir davantage de démarches pour conscientiser la population contre les dangers du partage d’information sur Internet.

Photo manipulation has been used to change and manipulate images to obtain desired results as photographic technology and practises have evolved. Some individuals consider photo alteration to be unethical to deceive the public. However, it can be viewed as a form of creativity and art. It can enable artists and photographers to express themselves via their work, opening them to a world of possibilities. Beate Gütschow's work is a fantastic example of photo manipulation. Gütschow used black-and-white composition to create apocalyptic metropolitan landscapes that appear real yet artificial. In the Post-photography period, he took his point of view and thought of manipulation to create a series of photos. He stated, "Using a pre-photographic method, reality is not the starting point; the starting point is the blank canvas, or in my case, the empty document, the digital sheet of paper: I am free to do whatever I want with this space; I can place all sorts of things inside it." (Gütschow)

There are various techniques for photo manipulation, primarily through Photoshop, but there is more to it than the technical approach. Manipulation can be performed by changing others' perceptions, vision, and what they think to be the truth. Catlin Langford (2020) demonstrated that tampering with the environment was used to generate a more dramatic impression of an event and enhance photographs within the film-developing dark room using different negatives to control reality in both parts of the Brief History of Photograph and Truth. 

Other artists have employed the manipulation principle to produce photorealistic, fantastical, and surrealist images, among other things. Hansruedi Ramsauer combines two pictures to create upside-down fusions, and he encouraged me to make more surrealism art that adheres to correct geometric construction. I was also a fan of Beate Gütschow's apocalyptic urban scenario images, so when I saw this leading line perspective of the ferry port, I knew it would be a perfect place to start. I then looked at photos that would work well and realised that one I took of a tree out the back of my studio building WM had a similar industrial appearance. I reversed the tree image and positioned the ferry terminal building pilers adjacent to the building behind the tree to create an illusion. I compare photo composition, environment, lighting, and photographic art components in all of the other photographs. I discovered the Albert Park image that allowed the ferry terminal pathway to continue, allowing the image's illusion to pull your eye into the environment, as well as my own world within the image. As a photographer, you are only framing a portion of reality, and I wanted to build on that by creating my own sense of reality through picture modification to seem real and create a new world.

« Galaxy gates » is the pride of our collection. It is the result of a 4 months long job. Due to the very high selection standards, less than 2% of the shots taken were used to create this immersive video. First, paints are mixed, then they are “opened”, a specific process that we have worked out while on a trip in Japan.

"GALAXY GATES" is an experimental dreamlike video rocking us smoothly through circular moves. The visual compositions have been created out of paint, oil and soap liquid.

this short film is a masterpiece of optical illusion and more specifically of pareidolia. For those who don't know, pareidolia is this strange phenomenon, described as psychological, which prompts us to see faces in inanimate objects (trees, clouds, food, ...). This is precisely the subject of the film "A Mind Sang" directed by Portuguese artist Vier Nev. Honestly, this 6 minute short film is quite oppressive to watch; its music and atmosphere will probably not put you in a good mood.

SÉANCE #13 — [Brutalité en ligne : nous sommes tous complices]

Le numérique nous rend invincibles. On peut tout savoir, tout faire, tout dire. En se cachant derrière le bouclier de notre écran, rien ne nous touche et nous ne touchons personne. Du moins, c’est ce que l’on pourrait croire.

Encore de nos jours, une remarque homophobe ou transphobe est publiée sur Internet toutes les 23 secondes (D., 2019, paragr. 7). Publier un commentaire haineux sur les réseaux, c’est un peu comme cracher sur le trottoir ; ça devient le problème des autres qui passeront par là. On l’ignore, le contourne, l’évite, et on se dit tout bas que c’est un manque de savoir-vivre. Il est facile pour un malfaiteur de continuer ses attaques s’il n’est pas témoin du tort qu’elles entraînent (D., 2019, paragr. 2). Tout comme un crachat laissé sur l’asphalte, le coupable n’est pas présent pour juger du dommage qu’il crée. Il n’assume donc aucune responsabilité sur son déchet.

La différence avec le harcèlement en ligne, c’est que les messages publiés heurtent et blessent  véritablement (D., 2019, paragr. 2). Pourtant, on les ignore.

En 2019, la Fondation Émergence a mis sur pied l’expérience « Haine mur-à-mur », conçue par l’agence Rethink Canada, dans le cadre de la 16e édition de la Journée internationale contre l’homophobie et la transphobie (D., 2019, paragr. 3). Cette expérience consistait à afficher des commentaires homophobes provenant d’Internet aux murs des lieux achalandés de la ville de Montréal. Seulement 20 minutes ont été nécessaires pour que la police en soit informée (D., 2019, paragr. 4).

Les résultats de cette expérience génèrent plusieurs interrogations : l’intimidation est-elle devenue un phénomène banal sur Internet ? Tolérons-nous n’importe quel propos haineux sous prétexte qu’on ne le verra plus demain ? Avons-nous oublié que ce qui se retrouve sur Internet ne disparaît jamais ?

Si la réponse est non, alors pourquoi n’agissons-nous pas contre la brutalité qui s’impose sur les réseaux ?

To get me head around photo manipulation i looked at what other artist did with their understanding what manipulation can be.

Hansruedi Ramsauer chooses 2 photographs that he mixes into one to create upside-down fusions and other brilliant effects that sometimes give a headache.

Hansruedi Ramsauer's style is very clean. I appreciate how he combines two photographs so smoothly that you can determine it's a fake but the graphics are Surrealist and trippy/cool.

Overall I think I like the more clean simplistic manipulation and surrealist collages

The way Hansruedi Ramsauer employs photographic elements to their advantage reminds me of a high school assignment. Every year that I took photography as an elective, my teacher permitted us to leave class and attempt to capture all seven photographic elements. Line, shape, form, texture, colour, size, and depth. This helps us look at our surroundings to improve our photographs and think more behind taking our photoshoot. You can see in Ramsauer's how they utilised leading lines successfully and they thought carefully when it came to editing their images.

I can use Ramsauer's technique, and while selecting photographs to edit, I should consider leading lines, shape, form, and texture.
