Taylor Lorenz at Substack:
We need to know who is funding the creator economy
Yesterday, a federal indictment revealed that a Tennessee media company working with right-wing influencers including Benny Johnson, Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Lauren Southern, was receiving significant funding from the Russian state-sponsored network RT to push Russian disinformation. The indictment is absolutely wild and WIRED has a great rundown on the details, including how the propaganda efforts worked. The case serves as the latest high profile example of how “independent media” on the right is anything but independent, and underscores the need for more transparency around funding models in the creator economy. It also shows how disinformation efforts have increasingly focused on penetrating U.S. media through content creators, and how lucrative being a pawn in these schemes can be. While right wing content creators position themselves as scrappy upstarts, leaning into anti-establishment and populist brand positioning, they frequently accept money from far right interest groups, extremist billionaires, and even foreign actors. Tenet Media received nearly $10 million, distributed out across a network of YouTubers and podcasters. As part of the disinformation campaign, Tenet Media influencers published hundreds of videos on social media that promoted Kremlin talking points. The videos were shared across platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok, reaching tens of millions of viewers.
[...] The far right recognized the opportunities in personality-driven media decades ago. After boosting talk radio stars in the 80s and 90s, when social media proliferated, they began to invest heavily in news influencers who seamlessly blend entertainment, news commentary, and far right political messaging into YouTube videos, Instagram memes, podcasts and more.
[...]
Ben Shapiro's Daily Wire has been heavily funded by wealthy Republican donors, including the Wilks brothers, Texas-based billionaires known for their oil and fracking fortune. Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, has benefited from significant funding from conservative mega donors including the Koch network. When right wing creators began getting deplatformed more frequently on mainstream social media apps in the second half of the 2010s, an entire ecosystem of alternative platforms aimed at helping extremist influencers monetize and amass audiences, cropped up. Rumble, a video sharing platform similar to YouTube backed by billionaire Peter Thiel, began paying far right influencers and anti vaxx content creators hundreds of thousands of dollars to create content on its platform in 2021. Locals, a newsletter platform owned by Rumble, allows influencers to monetize through newsletters in a similar way to Substack. DLive, a right wing Twitch competitor, allowed influencers storming the Capitol building on January 6th, to make thousands of dollars off their live streams. Kick and Cozy.tv, two other right wing live streaming platforms, permit nearly any far right extremist the ability to create content and start earning money. And X, under Musk, has paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to right wing influencer accounts.
The robust financial backing the right wing content creator ecosystem enjoys, allows extremists the ability to fund professional production teams, social media ad buys, and marketing initiatives that give them a competitive advantage online. In contrast, progressive creators are left to rely on meager donations and crowdfunding efforts to sustain their work. This financial imbalance has made it nearly impossible for left-wing content creators to match the reach or production quality of their right-wing counterparts. Already, several Russia-backed Tenet Media influencers, including Benny Johnson and Tim Pool, have been doing damage control. They've publicly stated that they had no idea about the origins of the money and claimed that they were merely unwitting victims who were misled by the company.
Right-wing media influencers like Nick Sortor (even though he wasn’t named in the indictment), Benny Johnson, and Tim Pool aren’t “independent media” in any way.

Earlier this month, a German court ruled that the country’s nationalist far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), was potentially “extremist” and could warrant surveillance by the country’s intelligence apparatus.
Campaign ads placed by AfD have been allowed to appear on Facebook and Instagram anyway, according to a new report from the nonprofit advocacy organization Ekō, shared exclusively with WIRED. Researchers found 23 ads from the party that accrued 472,000 views on Facebook and Instagram and appear to violate Meta’s own policies around hate speech.
The ads push the narrative that immigrants are dangerous and a burden on the German state, ahead of the European Union’s elections in June.
One ad placed by AfD politician Gereon Bollmann asserts that Germany has seen “an explosion of sexual violence” since 2015, specifically blaming immigrants from Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The ad was seen by between 10,000 and 15,000 people in just four days, between March 16 and 20. Another ad, which had more than 60,000 views, features a man of color lying in a hammock. Overlaid text reads, “AfD reveals: 686,000 illegal foreigners live at our expense!”
Ekō was also able to identify at least three ads that appear to have used generative AI to manipulate images, though only one was run after Meta put its manipulated media policy into place. One shows a white woman with visible injuries, with accompanying text saying “the connection between migration and crime has been denied for years.”
“Meta, and indeed other companies, have very limited ability to detect third-party tools that generate AI imagery,” says Vicky Wyatt, senior campaign director at Ekō. “When extremist parties use those tools with their ads, they can create incredibly emotive imagery that can really move people. So it's incredibly worrying.”
In its submission to the European Commission's consultation on election guidelines, obtained by a freedom of information request made by Ekō, Meta says “it is not yet possible for providers to identify all AI-generated content, particularly when actors take steps to seek to avoid detection, including by removing invisible markers.”
Meta’s own policies prohibit ads that “claim people are threats to the safety, health, or survival of others based on their personal characteristics” and ads that “include generalizations that state inferiority, other statements of inferiority, expressions of contempt, expressions of dismissal, expressions of disgust, or cursing based on immigration status.”
“We do not allow hate speech on our platforms and have Community Standards that apply to all content—including ads,” says Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts. “Our ads review process has several layers of analysis and detection, both before and after an ad goes live, and this system is one of many we have in place to protect European elections.” Roberts told WIRED the company plans to review the ads flagged by Ekō but didn’t respond to questions about whether the German court’s designation of the AfD as potentially extremist would invite further scrutiny from Meta.
Targeted ads, says Wyatt, can be powerful because extremist groups can more effectively target people that might sympathize with their views and “use Meta’s ads library to reach them.” Wyatt also says this allows the group to test which messages are more likely to resonate with voters.
The AfD has a long history of portraying immigrants as a threat to the Germany. In January, German media reported that the AfD had secretly met with members of neo-Nazi groups to discuss expelling immigrants from the country, or what they dubbed “re-migration.” Ekō found that some of the ads placed by the AfD included the hashtag #remigration.
Experts say that social platforms, particularly Facebook, have been integral to the AfD’s growth. “Facebook was their main platform from the beginning,” says Juan Carlos Medina Serrano, a former researcher at the Bavarian School of Public Policy, who studied the rise of the AfD’s presence online. “It's hard to get into German politics. There have been other right-wing parties before the 2010s, and the AfD is the only one that made it to being one of the main parties in recent elections.”
Because they were not platformed by traditional media, the AfD invested heavily in social media, says Serrano. “They have been very adept at designing polarizing content that goes viral.”
In a 2021 interview with DW, the party’s own press officer said that Facebook had been integral to the party’s success: “Without Facebook, I don't believe that the AfD could have become successful so quickly.” The party has also seen recent success on TikTok, where Medina says its message has resonated with younger voters.
In February, Meta published a blog post outlining its plans for the EU elections. But last month, the EU announced that it was investigating Meta for potentially violating the Digital Services Act and not doing enough to combat election-related disinformation.
“Companies cannot be trusted and are completely unreliable in enforcing their own self-governance rules,” says Aurel Eschmann, campaigner at LobbyControl, a German civil society organization that promotes transparency in elections. “Particularly if there's a conflict of interest with the content that generates the most activity, they will be unwilling to ban that sort of content.”
Experts worry that allowing entities like the AfD to push divisive ads and organic content on social media is helping to accelerate the rise of the antidemocratic far right across the EU.
“I definitely think that the platforms have failed to understand their impact on society, on how this content is transforming the whole European electorate,” says Serrano. But, he says, now that the AfD is an established part of the German government, it makes it difficult for any platform to ban it, despite its use of hate speech or anti-immigration rhetoric. “They cannot completely ban a political party, but they should be able to moderate it.”

6. Publish Guest Posts
Write high-quality guest articles for reputable blogs in your niche. Include a link to your website in the author bio or content, which can lead to a quick influx of traffic.
7. Offer Limited-Time Deals or Promotions
Create urgency by offering time-sensitive discounts or freebies. Promote these offers across social media and email to attract visitors quickly.

If anyone reading this ever bought shares in the diversity racket, then I would suggest you start dumping them now. Not that I would blame you for having bought them in the first place. ‘Diversity’ has been the great mantra of our age. Like ‘equality’, it is one of those words set up to be impossible to oppose. What even is the opposite of diversity? Enforced sameness? Monotony? It is hard to say.
Nevertheless, everyone was encouraged to go along with the diversity racket. It didn’t matter who was in charge – Labour or the Conservatives. Diversity was said to be one of the defining virtues of Britain. Almost the aim of the place, in fact.
But as some of us pointed out way back, ‘diversity’ is not an unalloyed good. Not the least problem being the fact that diversity doesn’t even get along with itself. For years it has been the argument of the pro-diversity left that the more diversity you had, the more tolerance you would have – because diversity would somehow by its nature create more tolerance. But in fact not everybody in the diversity tent adores everyone else shoved in with them. The contradictions and tensions thrown up are legion.
Take just one of the tensions thrown up during this ancient and most holy month of ‘Pride’. The mayor of Keighley, Mohammed Nazam, resigned this week after being criticised for attending a Pride event. Photographs show the then mayor grinning with a bunch of other numpties holding the hideous new ‘progress’ Pride flag, with added triangles to encompass trans people.
This year’s flag is said by campaigners to be ‘the most inclusive ever’. Not for Mr Nazam it wasn’t. You might be able to guess why from Mr Nazam’s first name. Wiser readers may also know that the man after whom Mr Nazam is named was not wildly pro-gay.
There are no Hadith (the sayings of Mohammed) explaining what the original Mohammed thought of ‘non-binary’ people, but one can guess. Mohammed was in many ways a fan of binaries. He would likely not have been a fan of the Pride flag in any of its forms. And while there are interesting scholarly arguments about the exact designs of the flags that Mohammed and his armies carried into battle, scholars are in agreement that Mohammed did not smite his enemies while flying a rainbow flag of any kind.
So the mayor of Keighley came under a certain amount of pressure from the Mohammed-fanbase community, and in a Facebook post said that he should not have taken part in the ceremony. In fact he said he should have ‘respectfully declined’ the invitation to the Pride flag-raising because it ‘contradicts my religious beliefs’. He went on to describe his attendance as a ‘lapse in judgment’.
This in turn led to him being suspended by the Conservative group on Bradford Council. For Mr Nazam is in several senses a conservative. He subsequently quit as mayor, but not before issuing a second apology, this time saying that he ‘did not mean any harm to the LGBTQ community’.
Interestingly enough, similar cases on the other side of the Atlantic aren’t all leading to the same outcome. In Alberta, Muslim and Christian parents have come together to oppose the teaching of LGBTQ ideology in Canadian schools. Last week hundreds of parents gathered outside the city hall in Calgary to chant ‘Leave our kids alone’. So-called Liberal counter-protestors also gathered. One wonders if there was any cognitive dissonance as these ‘diversity’ protestors found themselves standing in a Canadian street screaming at a bunch of Muslims? Reportedly there was in fact a split in the local activist ‘queer’ community on this question. Some believed that opposing the protestors would be a defence of ‘queer’ rights, others felt it would be ‘racist’.
In Los Angeles things got a bit more heated, with parents protesting outside the largely Armenian school. Here parents were also saying that they did not want their children ‘groomed’ by the LGBTQ ideology being pushed in their school. And on this occasion some of the pro-diversity counter-protestors ended up getting into fist-fights with the diverse parents. Once again you have to wonder if the LGBTQ activists who were pummelling immigrant parents to the ground are absolutely sure that their ideas have brought them to the optimal place in life.
In one of the most Muslim-populated area of the US, in Michigan, parents are continuing a fight to withdraw their children from lessons on anything to do with sexuality or family life, while in Maryland hundreds of campaigners came out again this week demanding to remove their children from such lessons. As one Muslim commentator put it, supporting these parents: ‘As Muslims, we refuse to be coerced into believing something our faith categorically condemns. This is not a political stance. It is a moral principle.’
All of which adds up to a very fine old mess, about which there are a number of things to say. The first is that it should by now be abundantly clear that every letter after B in the LGBTQIA+ alphabet has made the argument for gay rights infinitely harder. In the hands of a new generation of activists the ‘live and let live’ argument has turned into ‘believe what I believe’ and ‘say what I say’. Meanwhile, the old argument that gays were just like anyone else has been replaced by the suggestion that LGBTQIA+ people are in fact practically a different species – people who must have their own flag and be celebrated or else.
Second, it should now be abundantly clear where part of this began going really wrong – which is the moment that gender-nonsense activists chose to target the children. To tell children that there was no such thing as biological sex. To pretend that we are made of Lego and can take parts off and put them on again at will. To replace biological reality with gender woo-woo.
One poll in the US this week showed that support for gay relationships is declining. I’m not surprised. When the shoe was put on the LGBTQIA+ foot certain people decided to indulge in a bit of good old kicking, in the name of diversity. Well, they should expect to be kicked back.

The Power of Social Media Marketing in the Digital Age
In today’s digital world, social media has evolved from a mere communication tool to a powerful marketing platform. Brands, businesses, and influencers are leveraging social media marketing (SMM) to connect with their audiences, build their online presence, and drive sales. With billions of active users across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, digital marketing has become an essential strategy for any business looking to grow in the digital age.
What is Social Media Marketing?
Social media marketing is the process of creating and sharing content on social media platforms to achieve marketing and branding goals. It involves publishing engaging content, listening to followers, analyzing results, and running paid advertising campaigns. The aim is to reach potential customers, improve brand awareness, and increase website traffic and conversions.
The scope of SMM isn’t limited to just posting images or videos. It includes engaging with audiences through comments, direct messages, stories, reels, polls, and even live sessions. Brands use social media to tell their stories, showcase their products, and build communities around their niche.
Why is Social Media Marketing Important?
Wider Reach: With over 4.5 billion active users worldwide, social media platforms offer a vast audience for businesses to tap into. Unlike traditional marketing, social media allows brands to reach both local and global markets effortlessly.
Cost-Effective: Social media marketing is one of the most affordable forms of digital marketing. Creating an account and posting content is free on most platforms, while paid ads can be customized according to budget and target audience.
Builds Brand Loyalty: Consistent interaction with followers helps businesses develop stronger relationships with their audience. Customers are more likely to trust and stay loyal to brands that actively engage with them online.
Boosts Website Traffic: By sharing website links, blog posts, and product pages on social media, businesses can drive significant traffic to their websites. This, in turn, increases the chances of conversions and sales.
Real-Time Feedback and Insights: Social media provides immediate feedback from customers through comments, likes, and shares. It also offers valuable insights into consumer preferences and behavior, allowing brands to refine their strategies accordingly.
Popular Social Media Platforms for Marketing
Facebook: Ideal for businesses targeting a broad demographic. It offers features like business pages, groups, and ad campaigns.
Instagram: A visually driven platform perfect for brands in fashion, lifestyle, fitness, and travel.
Twitter (X): Best for real-time updates, customer support, and trending conversations.
LinkedIn: Suitable for B2B marketing, professional networking, and thought leadership.
YouTube: A video-based platform great for tutorials, product reviews, and brand storytelling.
Tips for an Effective Social Media Marketing Strategy
Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve — whether it's brand awareness, lead generation, or customer engagement.
Know Your Audience: Understand the interests, behaviors, and preferences of your target audience. Create content that resonates with them.
Consistency is Key: Maintain a regular posting schedule. Use tools like Buffer, Hootsuite, or Meta Business Suite to plan your content.
Engage With Followers: Reply to comments, answer queries, and acknowledge feedback. This builds trust and a sense of community.
Track and Analyze Performance: Use analytics tools provided by social media platforms to measure engagement, reach, and conversions. Adjust your strategy based on these insights.
Conclusion
Social media marketing is no longer optional — it’s a necessity for businesses aiming to stay relevant and competitive. With the right strategy, consistent effort, and audience engagement, brands can establish a strong online presence, build every online store with scalability, and drive growth. In an era where digital interaction shapes consumer behavior, mastering social media marketing can open endless opportunities for success.

Driving traffic to your website is the foundation of online success—whether you're running a blog, e-commerce store, or service-based business. But in 2025, the digital landscape is more competitive than ever. So, how do you increase website traffic effectively in today’s fast-paced environment?\

In this blog, we’ll explore proven, actionable strategies to help you attract more visitors, improve engagement, and ultimately grow your online presence.
1. Optimize Your Website for Search Engines (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most sustainable ways to grow website traffic. It ensures that your site ranks well in Google and other search engines when people search for relevant topics.
Key SEO Tips:
Use targeted keywords in titles, meta descriptions, headers, and content.
Improve site speed and mobile responsiveness.
Build backlinks from authoritative sites.
Create high-quality content that answers user questions.
Update old content to maintain relevance.
🔍 Pro Tip: Use tools like Google Search Console, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify opportunities.
2. Start a Business Blog
Blogging is a powerful way to generate organic traffic. A well-maintained blog allows you to:
Target long-tail keywords.
Share industry insights and helpful tips.
Build authority in your niche.
Encourage sharing on social media.
💡 Example: If you run a marketing agency, publish posts like “Top Social Media Trends in 2025” or “How Local SEO Drives Conversions.”
3. Leverage Social Media Marketing
Social media is a traffic goldmine—if used strategically.
Tips to Drive Traffic from Social Media:
Share your blog posts and web pages regularly.
Use visuals and videos to boost engagement.
Run targeted ad campaigns on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
Collaborate with influencers or industry experts.
📱 Don’t just post—engage! Comment, reply, and build relationships.
4. Use Email Marketing to Re-Engage Visitors
Email marketing isn’t dead—it’s thriving when done right.
Email Traffic Boosting Ideas:
Send regular newsletters with links to your latest content.
Offer a lead magnet (like a free guide) to grow your email list.
Use personalized CTAs to drive repeat visits.
✉️ Email subscribers are often your warmest traffic source.
5. Run Paid Ads (PPC)
If you need quick traffic, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising is a smart option. Platforms like Google Ads or Facebook Ads allow you to reach your ideal audience instantly.
Best Practices:
Target specific keywords or demographics.
A/B test your ads and landing pages.
Use retargeting to bring visitors back.
💸 PPC is great for launching new products, services, or content.
6. Post on Online Communities and Forums
Participating in relevant online communities can bring steady referral traffic.
Examples include:
Quora
Reddit
Facebook Groups
Niche forums in your industry
🎯 Answer questions genuinely and include your website link only when relevant.
7. List Your Website in Online Directories
Local and industry-specific directories can help boost both visibility and SEO.
Popular directories include:
Google Business Profile
Yelp
Clutch (for agencies)
TripAdvisor (for travel/hospitality businesses)
🧭 Make sure your business info is consistent across all listings.
8. Collaborate with Others
Guest posting, podcast appearances, or webinars with others in your industry can put you in front of new audiences and drive qualified traffic.
🤝 Collaboration helps build authority, backlinks, and traffic—all at once.
Final Thoughts
Increasing website traffic isn't about chasing the latest trends—it's about consistently applying a mix of smart strategies that align with your audience and goals.
Whether you're focused on SEO, content marketing, social media, or paid advertising, the key is to track your results, test new ideas, and keep refining your approach.

What Is Social Media Marketing? A Beginner’s Guide
In today’s digital-first world, brands must be where their audience is—and that place is social media. Whether it’s Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or TikTok, these platforms aren’t just for entertainment anymore; they’re vital channels for customer engagement, brand visibility, and sales. For businesses of all sizes, understanding the role of social media marketing has become essential to staying competitive.
At its core, what is social media marketing refers to the strategic use of social media platforms to promote a product, service, or brand. It includes a wide range of activities such as publishing content, engaging with followers, running advertisements, analyzing performance metrics, and more. Unlike traditional marketing, which relies heavily on one-way communication, social media marketing thrives on two-way conversations with users.
Why Social Media Marketing Matters
Social media isn’t just a trend—it’s where global attention lives. With over 5 billion active users across platforms as of 2025, businesses can no longer afford to ignore its potential. Social media marketing enables brands to:
Build direct relationships with customers
Increase brand awareness and visibility
Drive website traffic and sales

Key Components of Social Media Marketing
To create an effective social media marketing strategy, it’s important to understand its major components:
1. Strategy Development
Before diving into content creation, businesses must define their goals. Are you aiming to build a community, increase leads, or boost brand recognition? A clear objective shapes your choice of platform, content type, and tone of voice.
2. Content Creation and Scheduling
Content is king, even on social platforms. Brands should mix up formats—images, videos, carousels, infographics, stories, and reels—to keep users engaged. Posting consistently using a content calendar ensures your brand remains top-of-mind.
3. Audience Engagement
Responding to comments, messages, and mentions helps build trust. Community engagement not only fosters loyalty but also increases organic reach through algorithmic favorability.
4. Paid Advertising
Most platforms offer robust ad targeting capabilities. Paid campaigns allow brands to reach specific audiences based on demographics, behaviors, and interests—ensuring your content is seen by the right people at the right time.
5. Analytics and Reporting
What gets measured gets managed. Using analytics tools, marketers can track engagement rates, click-throughs, conversions, and more to understand what’s working and where to improve.
Choosing the Right Social Media Platforms
Not all platforms are created equal. Choosing the best one depends on your target audience and goals.
Facebook: Great for community building and paid campaigns.
Instagram: Ideal for visually rich content and influencer collaborations.
LinkedIn: A must for B2B companies, thought leadership, and professional networking.
TikTok: Excellent for viral, creative, and short-form content.
Twitter (X): Best for real-time updates and trending conversations.
Pinterest: Highly effective for product discovery and e-commerce brands.
Tips for Effective Social Media Marketing
To stand out in a crowded space, here are some best practices:
Be Authentic
People resonate with brands that are relatable. Avoid robotic messaging and show the human side of your business.
Tell Stories
Stories evoke emotions and build connections. Use storytelling formats like behind-the-scenes content, customer testimonials, and brand journeys.
Leverage Influencers
Partnering with micro or macro influencers can significantly expand your reach and build trust within niche audiences.
Stay Consistent
Consistency in voice, visual branding, and posting schedule helps reinforce brand identity and improves algorithmic performance.
Keep Learning
Social media platforms and their algorithms evolve rapidly. Stay updated through industry blogs, webinars, and testing new features regularly.
Common Social Media Marketing Mistakes to Avoid
Neglecting analytics: Without data, you’re flying blind.
Posting without strategy: Random posts dilute your brand message.
Ignoring feedback: Comments and DMs are opportunities, not interruptions.
Overpromoting: Focus more on value-driven content than constant selling.
